The Ionian Islands in the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age 3000-800 BC is a fascinating, informative, exceptionally well written presentation of the archaeological record regarding the Ionian Islands at the northwestern fringes of the Aegean world, and the factors that shaped the unique cultural identity, of their inhabitants in the Bronze and Early Iron Ages. The archaeological evidence drawn from tombs, cemeteries, settlement sites, and artifacts are treated chronologically and thematically, reconstructing a profile of each of the islands and the island region as a whole. A pattern emerges which points to alternating periods provincialism and isolation with those of vitality and openness to long distance connections. A seminal work of impeccable archaeological scholarship, The Ionian Islands is highly recommended for academic and professional reference collections regarding the prehistoric cultures of the Aegean region.

A excellent commentary on a true classic of history

Now in it's second edition featuring a new Introduction and additional Bibliography, Josephus: The Historian And His Society is a excellent commentary on a true classic of history by Tessa Rajak (Reader in Classics at the University of Reading). A Jerusalem upperclass priest and Pharisee, and a controversial Jewish general in the great and doomed revolt against their Roman occupiers by the Jewish populace in 66-73 CE, Josephus was the author of two ancient history texts: "Jewish Wars" and "Jewish Antiquities" which became seminal works of importance to both Jewish and Greco-Roman history. These works were combined under one cover and became known to academia as an indispensable reference resource for scholars and non-specialist general readers with an interest in ancient history. Well versed in both Greek and Hebrew, Tessa Rajak is particularly positioned to assess diverse source materials and provide contemporary readers with a sociological account of the Jewish revolt and its cultural context, as well as the role of Josephus himself in the events in which he participated and/or personally observed, as well as his chronicled accounts of Jewish and Roman personalities and politics.

This book should be on the shelf of many scholars as well as those who are just begining to learn about Ancient Greece. Schoellkopf manages to take a most complex, rich civilization and explain it all to his teenage granddaughter in a most simple and eloquent manner. Very interesting read, informative, and refreshingly easy to follow. A valuable roadmap for anyone travelling to Greece. Schoellkopf's 25 year plus study of Ancient and Modern Greece may very well become my 3 week itinerary for my future trip to Greece.

Justin's Epitome is one of our five major classical sources on Alexander the Great, but he never made it into an English translation until the publication of this book by Yardley and Heckel. That alone makes it unique.
Justin's account itself is brief (about 30 pages in print) but Heckel's excellent commentary makes up the remaining 200 pages of this publication. For everyone seriously interested in Alexander Heckel's superb commentary is a 'must have'.
This shouldn't be the first book you should buy about Alexander. But once you have read Bosworth, Green or Hammond, once you have tasted the original accounts of Arrian or Curtius - this is your next step on the ladder of true in dept analysis.

This is absolutely a wonderful book. It does an excellent job in depicting the life, culture, and history of rural Corfu. The food recipes are wonderful. However, I have to emphasize that this is not just another recipe book. It is more of an inside look into the life of rural Corfu.

This is an amazing work of map publishing. The fold out format is absolutely perfect for accessing the map quickly during a day of tourism. The map divides Bangkok into six different neighborhoods and for each one provides a highly detailed map complete with street names and outlines of major buildings and landmarks. In addition, the mapguide includes many good descriptions of the cities sites, and includes some tips on restaurants and entertainment. Some of these listings were quite good and off the beaten path. I used another guidebook to help plan my trip, but during the day, this mapguide was my primary reference.
As with any travel guide, there are some errors with opening times, but I can't hold that against them. Overall, this new mapguide series is an exciting new development in travel publishing. Also, it should be mentioned that this was originally published in France by Gallimard Loisirs. If you know French, therefore, you can probably get this in its original language.

Farnoux's 'archaeology of a dream' - the French title of this splendid little book - is the primary source for the general reader interested in the historiography of excavations at Knossos and in Crete. But the real value lies, I believe, in the reconstructions he has comissioned of the palace, and in his choice of current discoveries in Crete. Strongly recommended for students and travellers alike.

This book is quite amazing. The ground it covers is extensive and the secrets it relays are life changing. The book came out in the 1920's, predating L.R. Hubbard, The Secret, The Power of Now and many others. Teaching the vibrational force of thoughts, etc. While it takes from some other sources (Eastern Thought), it has a LOT of material taken from Hermes .
If you're still on the fence, you can find free versions online.
The Kindle version is well done, although I'd expect it to have a linkable Table of Contents - but it doesn't. Since this is a FREE book in PDF form online, I'd expect Amazon to add some functionality like chapter search, TOC, etc., since they are charging a download fee.
