Ok I love this text. I used this and its sister text on Romans for my ancient history classes. I find that the only down fall of this particular text is that Pomeroy tends to push her agenda in the beginning. However as far as texts on Greek History go, this is the best.

THE AUTHOR HAS DONE A WONDERFUL JOB IN RESEARCHING THE SUBJECT MATTER. FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN THIS AREA, I STRONGLEY RECOMMEND THE BOOK

The Greek civil war (1946-1950) completed the destruction of the German invasion. The civil war ended in 1950 and left behind a totaly destroyed (socialy and economically) country . The book covers the period between the Varkiza peace agreement of February 1945 and the outbreak of the Civil War in the summer of 1946. With the Spanish civil war Europe enters in the second world war. With the Greek civil war Europe enters in the cold war period. This is a very good book for students of modern Greek history.

A wonderful first hand account of life in Symi before the arrival of tourism. For those of us who experienced it first hand will smile at the authors' stories of the people, the island and it's history.
It was such a fun read, it was a shame it wasn't twice as long!

This is a wonderful book. It includes about 1200 color photos of 250 species of butterflies that occur in Greece. The butterflies are live specimen captured at the original scenery or in the front of the colorful flowers. There is a lot of information from biology and taxonomy for all the species.

Don't see how anyone will outdo MacCarthy on Byron anytime soon: this is THE book on Byron--that is, on his biography: MacCarthy's nearly 700 page tome is all about the man, and very little about the literature. Which is curious, because usually we're accustomed to seeing "critical biographies"--meaning the story of the person's life dovetailed with a literary critical explication of the person's art. (By the way, although some have urged that Ellmann's tome on Joyce is the ne plus ultra of critical-bio [James Joyce (Oxford Lives)] I will yet insist that his exquisite work on Wilde is his truly greatest work [Oscar Wilde].)

In any case, while there's probably much critical literature on Byron's art, this is THE BOOK on his life.

This is an outdated but exceptionally useful guide to Byzantine Greece. Although the driving directions sometimes veer toward ekphrastic compositions in both complexity and ambiguity, the descriptions of sights provide astute assessments of the history remaining to be seen. The layout and indexes are quite good. In addition to providing insightful coverage of churches and monasteries, it provides a fulsome view of Byzantine fortifications and their significance. An alternate title might well be "The Byzantinist's Guide to Greek Castles and Churches"!

I checked out this book to gain background info for my homeschool history curriculum. I learned much about the Byzantine Empire & the Eastern Orthdox Church.

If you're an adult wanting to learn more about these things, this book will give you a quick, digestable overview. Nice illustrations and special info boxes add to the value.

I'm not one to normally shy away from a tough read, so when I ordered "A Byzantine Encyclopaedia of Horse Medicine, I prepared for a tough read. Much to my delight, Anne McCabe's book is very readable for a scholarly work. It is well footnoted and unlike some works in which the original foreign language is given, Ms. McCabe does not assume that the reader understands it and thus provides both the original text and the translation.

She tracks the history of the Hippitatrica and takes us from Antiquity to the Middle Ages.

It is a must have for anyone interested in the history of veterinary medicine.

I picked up this book solely for the fact that it was a Byzantine book. I was not disappointed with the content, however. The book covers the following:

The book also explains what sources were used and why when describing how these people lived. It does a good job contrasting these groups to their western and Islamic eastern counterparts. It offers a broad view of each group while also focusing in on particular time periods. The Book also has several authors so getting bogged down in a certain authors style is unlikely to happen and it give a chance to compare styles. I were to teach an introduction in Byzantine Studies, or an Overview course this book would be on my list.
