A writer of outstanding repute in all his endeavors (translator, novelist, critic), Keeley has temporarily left aside all that academic stuff to write one of the five most beautiful books I have read in the past twenty years. Greek and Anglo literati like Seferis, Durrell and Miller come alive for us in these pages and special features of their work are examined with new depth. There are also some minor writers who serve as attractive backround to, and greatly enrich, the larger story. In his final paragraphs, Keeley hints that he might have a first person narrative in store for us covering a subsequent generation of philhellene writers. Let's hope he makes good on this almost-promise.

An enlightening book about the Generation of the Thirties

An interesting book about Henry Miller/Lawrence Durrill and the "Generation of the Thirties"-Greek poets that include Seferis, and painters such as Ghikas.

The book is exactly what the NY Times calls it--a combination of literary history/critique, and cultural history. It tries to provide a deep understanding of the poetry from the decade before World War 2. It dispells the notion that Greece only has offered the world Homer & Pericles. Seferis, for example, won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

A great new biography of Caesar

Review Date: 2006-09-30
This is a great book, clear, concise, fast-paced.

Antony Kamm, who a few years ago authored another biography of Caesar, intended as, and titled, "Julius Caesar - A Beginner's Guide", has not only expanded and revamped his previous text, but has carefully re-read the classical sources, studied new scholarship, and come up with new perspectives and insights. He does an amazing job of telling us what we need to know about Caesar in 155 pages, supplemented with maps and illustrations, and goes into detailed although succint discussions about issues such as the paternity of Caesarion or Caesar's philosophic beliefs. The military campaigns are not forgotten, and the descriptions and maps of some of the major battles are among the best and clearest.

Caesar is presented in context and surrounded by his contemporaries. We are told about the cultural, political, religious and military background of the late Roman Republic, and are acquainted with substantial, believable characters like Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Cicero or Piso; the women - Calpurnia, Servilia, Cleopatra - are given new proportions. As for Caesar himself, far from pretending to analyze him, Kamm simply states the facts and anecdotes in his usual elegant, subtly ironical, style, and lets his hero stand for himself. Caesar then comes up as "an idealist, a workaholic", with an "autocratic attitude and (..) preoccupation with quick results", who like no other "head of state in ancient or modern times applied himself so assiduously to such a range of physical and intellectual activities, and excelled at them all".

The lack of footnotes is regrettable, but Kamm makes up for it by quoting his sources in the text, which he manages to do without breaking the flow of narrative.

A Thoughtful and Comprehensive Study

Antony Kamm's previous works of history have shown him to be a tremendous synthesizer of information, who has the ability to clearly explicate the complex histories of ancient worlds - in this case, the remarkable and remarkably complex history of Julius Caesar.

Caesar is currently "in", just as fine scholars are also publishing new studies of important men and events throughout the classical worlds. Kamm's study of Julius Caesar makes a consistent but educated use of sources (many of which are conflicting on fine points about Caesar's remarkable life). Building on his earlier study for students, Julius Caesar: A Beginner's Guide, he is able in this volume to expand into some of the controversies of Caesar's career and those facts that impact our understanding of his character and personality, all focused on the unfortunately-standard view of 20th century scholars that any great leader who is a militarist must, of necessity, be bad. The result is clarity and a fine understanding of the stresses of the Roman Republic into which Caesar was born, and which, only in part through his actions, died with his own death. The Republic, centuries old at Caesar's birth, was unable to accept new solutions to the problems of its increasing empire, and the increasing "one-man rule" of its great military leaders, Marius, Sulla, Pompey and Caesar.

Kamm has the enviable talent of packing a great deal of important information into prose that is lucid and flexible. This is an excellent basic study that deals with all significant aspects of Caesar's life and the world of the late Republic. As the author says, one may not like Caesar, but that is unimportant in evaluating the effect of one extraordinary Roman on the history of his times.

Highly recommended for the beginner or the expert.

We were only going to one island (Maui), but this is a great, quick overview of all the islands. I was surprised at the hidden "gems" the guide found (for example, it mentioned Sam Sato's for lunch). It doesn't go into great detail, or offer "suggested itineraries" like other guides, but it's a good starting point.

More than just travel guide filled with lots of text.

I am very pleased with this book for a number of reasons. Many other books are just too big to carry around with you and take up too much space in your luggage. This book is very compact, which makes it highly portable. in addition it is more than just another travel guide, as it is jammed packed with map after map after map. These maps fold out and cover almost every part of the Hawaiian Islands. Also this guide has listings for such things, as restaurants, museums, and shopping. Out of the three travel guides that I have boughten or received on Hawaii this is one that most likely will accompany me on my upcoming trip to Hawaii.

Detailed account in entertaining story-telling style
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-05
Only a handful of historians have the gift for story-telling that Dr. Nicol demonstrates in this great work. It is an academic work in popular style comparable only to the works of Steven Runciman (see especially, The Fall of Constantinople 1453 (Canto)).

In this work, Nicol organizes the post-Latin kingdom into 4 periods, the post-Latin empire restoration (1261-1282), the era of decline (1282-1321), the civil wars (1321-1354), and the final century of Ottoman incursion (1354-1453). Each section could be studied on its own though each builds on the previous sections as a coherent whole. The final chapter concerning the last holdouts after the fall of Constantinople seemed a bit rushed compared with the rest and this reviewer was hoping for more detail there. There was one map for the entire book and that makes understanding the 200 year span of changes more difficult to follow. Inside the back cover is a family tree for the last emperor, Constantine XI. Despite the minor disappointments this important work is a fine overview of the last centuries of Byzantium and a useful and enjoyable read. The book's overall value far exceeds any of its shortcomings.

The Long Journey of Byzantium's Tragic but Noble End

Donald Nicol's account of the last 250 years of Byzantine history is accurate, well written and neatly organized. Unlike studies of earlier ages for the Empire where the Empire and the Arabs ruled the East, Eastern Mediterranean history after the Fourth Crusade can get rather complex and confusing, as not only the Empire, but the "crusading" Latins, the Islamic nomads, and the Slavic Christian Kingdoms must all be considered. A tale that could easily become entangled and confusing for the reader, Nicol superbly narrates the events and provides detailed accounts of the players. He cleverly demonstrates how entrenched the beleagured Byzantines were, with the greedy Italians to the west, the encroaching Turks to the east, the growing Serbian Empire to the north, and the festering internal decay of Imperial decentralization from within. Yet, the Empire still produced great leaders like Theodore Laskaris I, John Vatazes, Michael VIII, John Cantacuzene, and perhaps the most tragic of all medieval heroes, Constantine XI Palaeologos, who all, in better times and without so many encoaching powers from the outside, may have saved the Empire from such tragedies. But in addition to this sad tale of Byzantium's fall, Nicol also narrates the flourishing of Orthodoxy in the Imperial and Slavic world, as well as the flowering of learning and thought at Mistra, in the lower Peoloponese. This alone, was the spark that triggered the resurgance of knowledge and arts in the Italian Peninsula, less than 100 years after the Fall of Constantinople. What many, scholars and readers alike, tend to forget is that Byzantium's lasting legacy lay in its cultural achievements in the Orthodox Church, as well as providing the materials and teachers that would reawaken Western Europe into that period of rebirth so commonly referred to as the Renaissance.

Theourgia= Divine Work

As far as I am concerned this book is one of the most significant that Llewellyn ever published. It demonstrates the debt that western occult philosophy and practice owes to Greek thought. As the author points out you can hardly open any book on this subject without finding Plato and Plotinus on every page.

The history of Greek mystical and magical thought is traced progressively from Archaic and Classical Greece, to the growth of the Mysteries, to the wider Hellenistic period, to Gnosticism, to Middle Platonism, to the Greek New Testament, to Neoplatonism, to the Renaissance, to 19th and 20th century occult societies (Golden Dawn, Theosophical Society, Rosicrucian, Fraternitas Saturni, Aurum Solis, etc.) An especially good case is made for cabalistic thought being as much, or more, Greek as Hebrew in nature.

Yet, in spite of the main purpose of showing Greek influence, the author doesn't hesitate to point out the roots of Orphism and Pythagorianism may very well have been influenced by Siberian Shamanism.

I have only two comments about the content. First, the author does an excellent job of condensing all that is know about the nature of the various mysteries. He also makes some perceptive speculations of his own. However, he misses what has long been obvious to me- namely, that at least at Eleusis, the Greater mysteries involved an induced near death experience in the subterranean chambers. Also, while a comprehensive appendix concerning Isopsephos (numerical values of Greek words and names), I couldn't help but notice that there is no interpretation of 999....

One of the best introductions to Greek Magick ever written

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone. Godwin shows how Greek philosophy and mysticism has influenced thought, religion, and metaphysics throughout history. This book is essential for anyone studying the Qabbalah, Gnosticism, the Golden Dawn, Wicca, or any other magickal religion or system. It helps show the foundations on which all of these systems are built and shows how the ideas of Plato and Plotinus have grown, developed, and shaped modern thought.

There is no need for a lengthy review in this instance. This book is, to put it quite simply, an outstanding resource for anyone who wants to see into the heart of Orthodoxy. The Orthodox ( Athonite ) tradition, largely unknown or at best, poorly understood by Western Christianity, offers a distinctly, loving and mystical vision on the nature of faith. Father Golitzin has assembled a wonderful collection of articles and stories that are both greatly enjoyable and highly informative. Whether you are Orthodox or just interested in learning about the world's first Christian church, you will find this book to be a very rewarding read.

Very good understanding of the Holy Mountain

Hieromonk Alexander (Golitzin) provides an excellent history of Mount Athos, concentrating on more recent history.

By presenting translations of contemporary Athonite spirituality, he permits the reader to directly the spirituality directly rather than through a filter. Particularly striking to this reader was how similar in tone and 'feel' these texts are to those of the Desert Fathers of many centuries ago. Thus, it demonstrates how Christian Orthodoxy has maintained the faith that was once for all given to the saints.

Highly recommended!

The Lonely Planet guides are excellent for any locale..but this edition (covering Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Portugal and even Morocco) is a must-read for the quintessential backpacker jumping on a plane for Europa. These guides excel at recommending lodging of many price ranges (from youth hostels to 5-star hotels) and meal choices of the same range (excellent recommendation for outdoor markets.."buy a loaf of bread, a block of cheese and a bottle of wine here"..which is a plus as many guides catering to this area focus on only older travels with large budgets..or persons seeking to spend only a dollar a day or some insanity..it's always good to have the most information possible..and it's included here. Entertainments ideas from free plaza and park visiting to museums, discotechqes, architecture, boat rides etc. etc. are included..good for young and old. It even lists culture-sensitve information such as appropriate dress for visiting churches and monasteries as well as travel-safe tips for women. Book your Eurorail pass and get going.

This is truly a masterly piece of work. At last the speeches of Lysias have been given the attention they have been long over due. The author has successfully produced a modern translation of the extant works of this great Greek logographer. Lucid and insightful this work is easily accessible for those with a general interest in Ancient History, as well as both A-Level Ancient Historians and undergraduate level students who possess no or limited knowledge of the ancient Greek language.

The author's most notable achievement is that of the quality of the translation. Textual emendations and inferred passages are clearly provided, as are the alternate readings and meanings of the Greek text. However, the erudition of both author and book are clearly evident. Each speech is preceded by a detailed introduction outlining important events referred to within the text as well as political ties and historical events that often form the background to the case in question. This often-invaluable introduction is used to highlight effectively the subtleties of the cases but it can be undisputed to state that the true appeal of the book is in its majestic grasp of language. The obvious skill of the author lies in his ability to capture the true atmosphere of the speeches whilst at the same time providing a clear and lucid translation.

Whether you possess a general interest in the ancient world or are a student in Classics or Ancient History is irrelevant - academic works simply do not come any better than this! A must for all bookcases!

Lysistrata is playwright Edward Einhorn's new off-Broadway adaptation of the 2500-year-old classical Greek play by Aristophanes. In addition to the text of the play itself, Lysistrata features essays by Einhorn, sample musical scores, and also a version of the play with the characters and stage directions removed, for directors who wish to make the decisions of who speaks what line for themselves. Retaining the bawdy humor of the original, Lysistrata is undeniably a laugh-out-loud comedy of war, sex, and wicked fun. Lysistrata is an excellent contribution to theater shelves, though the raunchy subject matter is decidedly for adults only.

In Aristophanes' comic fantasy, the women of Athens, led by the fearless Lysistrata, initiate the ultimate antiwar protest to coerce their husbands into signing a peace treaty with Sparta. Edward Einhorn brings a clever contemporary spin to this favorite ancient Greek comedy with his witty adaptation, mixing modern day slang with Grecian poetry. Overall, this adaptation is an enjoyable erotically hilarious take on the Greek classic.
