Excellent History of South Mississippi
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-03
Charles Sullivan and Murella Hebert Powell did a wonderful job in writing the history of one of America's fastest growing regions. From the days of Bienville and d'Iberville all the way up to the 1990's, Sullivan and Powell vividly describe the history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The book becomes especially interesting when the authors explore how the region reacted to America's wars. Besides military history, the book also contains information on domestic history, such as the growth of industry in the region. The excellent writing is complemented by the beautiful pictures of the people and landscape of south Mississippi. Whether you are a resident of Mississippi or just someone who is interested in the history of this growing area, you should definately consider this book.

This One Stirs The Soul!

Review Date: 2008-07-14
The seeds of racism planted by adults impact children in ways that in time confront us, unnerve us, and ultimately challenge us to embrace the human family. This focus is candidly portrayed in Ruth Vander Zee's historical fiction work, MISSISSIPPI MORNING. Masterfully illustrated by Floyd Cooper, this children's book takes a glimpse at life in a Mississippi town as seen through the eyes of James William, a white youngster. The story takes place during 1933, a time when Jim Crow laws and "that's-just-the-way-it-is between-blacks-and whites" attitudes prevailed. James William is friends with Leroy, a black child. While fishing together on a comfy-cozy summer afternoon, James William is unnerved by his fishing buddy's unwillingness to sit next to what seems to be an ordinary tree. "That's the hanging tree," Leroy confides, telling James William about the Ku Klux Klan and harsh, often untold realities faced by blacks. Convinced that race hatred does not exist in his hometown, James William's life takes a turn when he comes face to face with a Klan member in a place least expected. This engaging work accompanied by Cooper's thought-provoking illustrations can be used to spark healthy discussion regarding race relations. A springboard for understanding and healing, MISSISSIPPI MORNING is a must-have item for home, school, and families across cultures!

A "Must Have" for genealogists searching in Mississippi
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1997-11-02
If you are searching for Great Grandpa's land anywhere in Mississippi, "Mississippi Road Atlas" is worth obtaining. All 82 counties are clearly marked with Township, Range and Sections. Cemeteries are also marked on many counties. Some maps are several years old but that adds to the usefulness as land changes over time.
I have already dog-eared my copy and plan to use it until it falls apart.

This book is an encyclopedia of 1,200 United Methodist Churches in Mississippi with brief historical sketches for almost all of the active congregations. Over 150 line drawings of church buildings from every region of Mississippi add a special dimension to this book, written as a project of Mississippi Methodists' 200th anniversary in 1999. The appendix lists churches by county and year of organization.

MISSISSIPPI WILDFLOWERS by Ms. Lucille Parker, 1981.

This is an exquiste book.I would give it ten stars if I could. Ms. Parker has beautifully reproduced in her book the watercolors she painted of Mississippi wildflowers, a wonderful biodiversity of wildflowers in the state I call home. Although localized to Mississippi this mystical, poetic, yet technically accurate depiction of the wildflowers is far superior to photographic field guides, all right for the field but of no interest in terms of floral art. THIS IS NOT A FIELD GUIDE. A book to savor.Akin to Audubon, THE TEMPLE OF FLORA.

Rare look at Mississippi history

Apparently the author is a kind of white supremicist, who actively resisted the Civil Rights Movement. Yet he saw their point of view, and admired their integrity. He tries to play fair, as it says on the back of the book. Title says Defiant years are 1953- 1973. He was Director of the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission. 39 photos. I think this book is privately printed, too. Hefty. Great deal, recommended.

Pride of Mississippi
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-20
No other fair in the nation is really a family gathering like the Neshoba County Fair. This fair was founded in the late 19th century to show produce and good cows and horses. It slowly grew so that families built houses to eat, laugh, and forget the everyday life. As time passed, horse racing and special days were set aside, one of the most notable is when politicians speak. Ronald Reagen was so happy to come to the fair and anyone running for state office in Mississippi finds a way to the fair. For the geneologist, the book is filled with facts and pictures and for a son or grandson of Mississippi it is wonderful.
