Despite little previous knowledge of this subject, I came away with profound respect for both these coins and the men who struck them. This book was extremely well written and done in a way that it appeals to all levels: rank amateur such as myself or professional coin dealer like my friend John who read the book at the same time I did.

"Grassroots Garveyism" is one of the best books I've read on the organizing traditions of the Garveyites!!!! Many young itinerate preachers, like Malcolm X's mother and father, were organizers. It provides a class analysis of the membership, supported by the census--workers, peasants and tenant farmers and farm workers--also many in port cities involved & exploited in maritime industry--as well as many labor organizers. In contrast to Judith Stein's class analysis, this is a powerful revision of the UNIA story--less speculation, more analysis. Above all, Mary Rolinson does a powerful analysis of the symbolic politics of self-emancipation, self-respect and self-defense at the grassroots.

In reading about Southern history, I kept coming across the name of Moses Waddel and his Willington Academy. A narrow-minded fire and brimstone preacher, Waddel launched a galaxy of brilliant antebellum Southern leaders using educational methods shrewdly calculated to foster self reliance and intense self motivation. I wonder if our kids today have the same opportunity that backwoods South Carolinians did in 1804. Very readable book with plenty of well researched detail, that fairly deals with both the successes and faults of this influential if not great man.

Despite being from Georgia-Pacific, this little book of 206 pages does give great ideas for improving your home, both inside and out.
It is worth the read, if only for the disclaimer: "Georgia-Pacific will not be responsible forany illness, injury, damages, claims, suites, actions or loss of any kind whatsoever or however caused arising from the use or misue of the information and/or drawings contained herein."

This book provides fascinating insight into how a diverse group of individualists including speculators, slaveholding farmers, Jewish merchants, physicians, college students, workmen, European immigrants, and others united for common causes and in turn created a community. Also it does yeoman service in dispelling many of the cherished preconceptions and myths of both lovers of the South and her detractors. By focusing on a small town the author has created a metaphor for hundreds if not thousands of other American communities that arose in the Nineteenth Century.
I recommend this book for everyone. It is a satisfying read for the academic as well as the casual student of history and the War Between the States.

Ever wished, as you walked along a deserted stretch of beach or stared at the ruins of a stately old home, you had a naturalist/historian along with you? Buy A GUIDE TO A GEORGIA BARRIER ISLAND and you'll be in the company of both. His name is Taylor Schoettle. His informative, easy-going style and eager descriptions of what you're walking on, looking at, and interested in make this book a tremendous bargain.
One of the coincidences that makes life fun and carrying a guidebook worthwhile occurred while I was in a small freshwater marsh looking for a painted bunting (coastal, semi-tropical bird)on Jekyll Island. Schoettle had written, "This marshy habitat is excellent for viewing the colorful male painted bunting." I put his book in my pocket, glanced at some color that flew into a short cabbage palm, lifted my binocuars and there he was--a "...colorful male painted bunting." Now, how do you suppose the author arranged that?
