The Colorado Trail - A Comprehensive Guide
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-29
If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to the Colorado's beautiful 470 mile trail, Randy Jacob's book is an excellent choice. This concisely written yet thorough guidebook includes information for day-hikers and through-hikers and takes you on a scenic journey from Denver to Durango.

The introductory chapter gives a complete history of the Trail and how it was developed. Jacobs also gives backcountry guidelines and precautions for novice hikers, a suggested packing list and a geological description of the trail.

For those mainly interested in the "technical" aspect of the Colorado Trail, Jacobs has all the bases covered. The book is broken down into sections of the Colorado Trail that are manageable and accessible for day-hikers and provide comfortable stopping and restocking points for through-hikers. Each section of the Trail is labeled with a starting point, an ending point, mileage for the section and total elevation gain. Jacobs also includes elevation gain and loss charts.

Following are detailed descriptions of the trail, access points, and supply and service accomodations. At the end of each section Jacobs has included a blank section for trail notes the Official Colorado Trail Topographic Maps with mileage and measurements.

In addition to all these features, the book includes the spectacular photos of John Fielder to enhance the text. Jacobs also added complete information for mountain biking the Trail, showing bike detours and alternate routes.

One of the extra details that sets this book apart from other guidebooks is the inclusion of Gudy Gaskill's Colorado Trail highlights and pitfalls. As the driving force behind the development of the Trail, Gaskill's insights are invaluable for any hiker on the Trail.

Overall this book is well-designed and makes planning a trek on the Colorado Trail, whether a day trip or a through hike, simple.

COLORADO JEWEL is a sparkling read!

Beautiful and lively Magheen Fitzgerald never dreamed she'd someday leave her native Ireland for the shores of America and to the mountain splendors of Leadville, Colorado. She was in search of her brother, Father Patrick Fitzgerald with hopes of making a fortune in mining to help her other brothers purchase freedom from Australian penal colonies. But when the stagecoach she was traveling in overturned near Leadville, her fate was sealed in losing her heart to her rescuer, handsome and wealthy lawyer-turned-mine owner, Daniel Calcord. As he nursed Magheen back to health in a remote cabin, Daniel lost his heart and head to the wild Irish beauty. It was only a matter of time before they found themselves wed and trying to make it work.

Very Enjoyable!

The high country of Colorado offers a wealth of outdoor recreational experiences for hikers. Part of 'The Colorado Mountain Club Guidebook' series, and now in an newly updated and expanded second edition, "Colorado Lake Hikes" by hiking and cross-country skiing enthusiast and 'The Denver Post' columnist Dave Muller offers a fully illustrated collection of one hundred hikes to 145 different high-country Colorado lakes. Aspiring hikers and outdoors enthusiasts are provided with four levels of hikes ranging from easy to difficult. Each particular hike is accurately described in practical detail including round-trip distances, estimated hiking times, starting elevation, highest elevation, elevation gain, difficulty rating, and a list of relevant maps. Of special note is the 'user friendly' locator map in the front of "Colorado Lake Hikes". Enhanced with color photographs and maps throughout, "Colorado Lake Hikes" is a superb on-site guide and highly recommended for anyone planning a walking trip through Colorado's beautiful lake country. Also very highly recommended and a part of 'The Colorado Mountain Club Guidebook' series is "The Colorado Trail: 7th Edition" (9780976052524, $24.95) which is the official guidebook of The Colorado Trail Foundation and includes integrated GPS waypoints, expert planning advice, full color maps for each of the 28 trail segments, elevation profiles, descriptions of the trail segments, and even information for resupply at nearby towns.

I had the previous edition of this book and it was just OK. But this one is really pretty... the book even has one of those rugged, matte coated covers. This book is easy to figure out and has a lot of photos! I think it would make a great gift too.

Turn off the television and kick back with Colorado Motet. You'll feel like you've gotten to know some folks, and learned a little bit about life along the way. Think Bukowski, Annie Proulx, and Richard Brautigan. Motet has the same bittersweet flavor and a sense of humanity that's rare these days. It's a sweet deal to find a book that's got some meat to it, that's not a formula driven thriller, that's got a collection of characters you can sink your teeth into. If I were Hollis I'd give it an 868.

As per usual the Narrow Gauge Calender from the Colorado Railroad Museum is loaded with excellent pictures of Colorado narrow gauge lines. Although practically all of the D&RGW or its successors, the pictures give a lot of detail in the background for those interested in Colorado.
