Marie Morris...I'd love to meet you. My husband and I LOVED this book. I found it to be better than most of the travelogue books because it was written with a personal, been-there-done-that attitude.

A slice of what the Draft Resistance movement was about

A very informative book on a era in which either you weren't alive at the time, too young, or couldn't believe that you went through all of what happened during the 1960's to early 1970's.

Wonderful Overview Of Vietnam War Draft Resistance Movement
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-04
Nothing inspires so much enduring controversy and strongly held opinions as the subject of active draft resistance during the Vietnam War. The draft resisters were composed of a relatively small segment of the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of young American men of draft age who avoided serving in the Army in one fashion or another. While most avoided active service in one or another fashion by enrolling in colleges or graduate schools, getting married and quickly having children, or by crossing the border into Canada, the draft resisters stood their ground and actively (and often quite dramatically) confronted the system by openly opposing the draft, burning their draft cards publicly, and serving themselves up for the legal and social consequences of refusing to serve in the military.

The author's approach is both appealing and effective; he uses a plethora of anecdotes and then places them in context by providing an overall history of the movement as well as an effective analysis of the effect of the movement both for the individuals choosing to participate in it as well as for the society at large. Author Michael Foley is a history professor at the City University of New York College of Staten Island, and he obviously has some personal experience informing his awareness of the phenomenon, which was in his estimation one of the most important and most progressively attempted efforts at defanging the war machine, a technique which comprising the cutting edge of young Americans opposition to the war in Southeast Asia. It found its inspiration in the Gandhi-like examples of the civil rights movement, and found widespread philosophical and legal support for a method that eventually forced the formal apparatus of government to sit up and take notice.

What I found especially fascinating about Foley's approach is his concentration on events transpiring in the greater Boston area, where I had many personal experiences, both with the active resistance against the war as well as the other related anti-war activities. So the author's cogent analysis and colorful anecdotes often churn up memories of people and the times from my own reservoir of such experiences some thirty-five years ago. What was so intriguing about the movement was the way it transformed what was initially a massive loathing for what was considered an unmanly and suspect strategy into one that was much more widely supported and endorsed by mainstream Americans. Thus, by placing themselves and their futures on the line (many resisters eventually served time in prison rather than serve in the military), the resisters did change public opinion and popular perception of the war itself and on the ways in which honorable young men could behave in response to it.

Eventually, such efforts actually helped to end the draft, as President Nixon foisted a lottery system as an interim approach to the patently unfair policies of the draft, and soon thereafter created an all-volunteer service in response to the public outcry over 'selective service'. The actions of the war resisters sparked a wide-spread recognition among their peers of the obviously unfair nature of the draft itself, and helped to legitimize the mass-protests against the war involving millions of Americans outraged by the racist and social class distinctions made in draft policies. Finally, Foley shows how greater civic awareness is required to ensure a more enlightened and informed understanding of one's patriotic duties to the country during time of war. Enjoy!

This is the story of a domestic violence victim who was murdered by her husband directly in front of the police station after leaving the court house after obtaining an order of protection. It is based on her husband's own writtings. It is a must read for any domestic violence investigator or advocate as it provides insight into the mind set of a dangerous domestic violence stalker who showed few outward signs of his dangerousness.

I have been an nurse in a critical care area for over 5 years, this book tells you what you need to know in a concise way, and leaves all the non-essential information out. If you want to know th quick answer without reading a bunch of fluff, this is the book for you.

The best Crit Care Handbook

Review Date: 2003-06-05
This is easily the best crit care handbook around. Well written chapters - the one on mechanical ventilation is the best I've read in a handbook - and hits most topics you need to know.
Downsides - it can use some updating, and I think most chapters can be a little more detailed. (better to have more detail than less)

Another good option would be Joseph Varon's Handbook of Practical Critical Care Medicine.

If you're going to buy a crit care handbook it should be one of these.

Newlyweds J.W. and Zee are off to Boston, and lo and behold, J.W. breaks up an attempted murder on the street outside the opera house. Luciano Marcus, the intended target, is greatful, and hires J.W. to track down who was after him. Could it be from his past mob ties, or somebody who will inherit his fortune if he dies? Or maybe angry Wampanoags who want the old man's cranberry bog (sacred Indian ground)?

This book has interesting side stories, and fascinating characters. And the ending scene is a thriller. A delish mystery!

The architecture of modern MIT
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-29
continue to be seen as a lackluster urban university scattered among classrooms, office buildings, and dormitories in Boston's Back Bay section. The architect chosen for this unprecedented, highly-visible, and risky large-scale architectural undertaking was William Welles Bosworth, a MIT graduate in architecture recommended by John D. Rockefeller. Yet, Bosworth continually had to reckon with the influence of other prominent architects who had put forth their own visionary plans. Among these were Ralph Adams Cram, who had designed West Point's campus; Steven Child, a student of Frederick Law Olmstead; and the chairman of MIT's Dept. of Architecture, Desire Despradelle. Jarzombek tells the story of how Bosworth managed to remain true to his own plans rooted in his neoclassicism while accommodating the ideas of other architects and the preferences of the powerful patrons. This complex, historic project is followed with plentiful old photographs and architectural drawings from MIT's archives. The author, a professor in MIT's Dept. of Architecture, gives equal treatment to the diverse individuals who had a role in the shaping of the project, the architectural concepts of the time, and Bosworth's work and resolutions of issues along the way. Needless to say, the architectural project succeeded in putting MIT into the forefront of U. S. science and engineering universities. And Bosworth's cluster of impressive buildings continues to play a central role in MIT's staying in this position.

This book was so informative. It detail what the effects of diabetes are and how to adapt your life so that this very treatable disease will not overtake you. The writer of this book are the leading expert for Harvard Medical school and a hsuband of a diabetic.

They discuss diet, what to expect from doctor, monitors, medication, diet, complications and what to expect if you do and don't take care of yourself.

I suggest this book for anyone who deals with diabetes on a regular basis or wants to find out more. This book si great for both type I and Type II diabetics.

Ignorance of diabetes is not bliss, this book can scare you at first if you are just dignosed, but the information in this book will help you find the courage to find a good doctor ! and control this disease.

Great reference for new diabetics on all major topics

This is the first book on diabetes I have read since I was diginosed with diabetes. It is a great reference book with a philosphy that diabetes is to be controled by you and not you by it. It covers all types of diabetes, treatment, insulin, diet, exercise, complication, pregnecy, and how to deal with your new cronic disease so that one can live a full life.

I recomend this book for all diabetics because of the source, the ease of understanding, and the professionalism of its approach as well as it has tons of useful information. E. J. Boehm
