lovely pictures and charming, southern smelling annotations. what a fun book to read! The Okra and Shrimp are killer!! Please buy this book, make the food and change some poor ol' yankee's way of thinking about okra!

This is my favorite cookbook ever--I think everyone should have one. Ms. Dupree packs this full of recipes that real people can and would want to make--I like to think of her as comman man's Martha Stewart. What makes this extra special are the wonderful stories and beautiful photographs that accompany the recipes. Even if you never lifted a pan, you'll have a great time looking through the book, although I dare anyone to read through it without wanting to immediately try at least something from it!

My mom has this cookbook and I pull it from the shelf every time I go home. The recipes are excellent and the anecdotes from Dupree & Co's lives regarding Southern food are delightful. It really does capture a certain warm and generous spirit in Southern cuisine, combining old favorites with new and interesting ideas in a way that still fits in with the whole milieu. (It might sound silly to say that the pictures are gorgeous, but they are, and add not just visual information to the book but a lot of, well, heart.) I'd recommend this to anyone.

This is an excellent gift for someone who wants the art but also a little bit of background. Nicely done.

Georgia O'Keeffe died in 1986 owning more than half the approximately two thousand works she had produced during the eighty years she was active as an artist. Four hundred of those works were oils, charcoals, pastels, pencils, and watercolors. Additionally there were more than seven hundred sketches in her personal collection. O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes: The Artist's Collection explores and showcases the significance of Georgia O'Keeffe's collection of her own work and comprises seventy-five seminal works reproduced in full color and dating from around 1910 down through the 1960s. Unique, impressive, O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes is an essential volume for students of American art history in general, and the life and work of Georgia O'Keeffe in particular.

This is a great overview of OKeeffe's work. I love her desert work and recommend this coffee table book which is full of her work.

This book is the result of Sills' consuming photographic affair with a rural family in Georgia. After thousands of photographs we see this basic American Southern family grow and develop before our eyes. Sills' eyes and camera allow us to discover beauty where others may see ... trash and dirt. Tina Toole develops into a Frida Kahloesque sort of chameleon-like woman, often pretty, sometimes tough, but always mesmerizing. This is one of those books that every photographic aficionado should buy.

This book won the 2000 Southern Books Competition Award of Excellence in Book Design from the Southeastern Library Association. This award is given in recognition of the book's aesthetic appeal and design and for fine craftsmanship in its printing and binding. Congratulations to author Vaughn Sills, designer Kyong Choe, printer C & C Offset, and the University of Georgia Press.

Vaughn Sills' One Family has done something, but done it very sublty; by focusing for twenty years on photographing the Toole family from Georgia, Sills has managed to photograph many families, represented by this proud and tenacious family whose corner of world happens to be the American South. You could easily call this a book "a photgraphy book looking at the rural south"; and it is, the dialogue and writings in the book sometimes show that Southern vernacular; the scenery sometimes seems typically "Southern"; but to stop there at "Southern" as a despricition is missing the larger picture. To stop there would be to miss the wonderful, wide, world of people in every day life, engaged in just simply living. The writing included in the book is revealing, personal and touching, Some of it is dialogue with family members and some is poetry by Tina Toole Truelove. These words and feelings are what help tie the book to the world at large because we see that, even in the South, people feel a certain way, have certain experiences. Yes, this book would be a great source for a vew on a part of the American South,but don't stop there on your journey with this beautifully photographed book. I treasure mine and treasure the truths I see in their faces.

The month-by-month guide to gardening is a joy to look at and read, even for those of us with a brown thumb. A wonderful hostess gift (lasts longer than a bottle of wine). The recipes are simple and attractive, the book is about lifestyle.

I always look for gardening books as gifts for my husband, an seasoned avid gardener. I knew this one would give him hours of pleasure, but I was surprised to learn that I can also benefit from all the treasurers in this beautiful book. Reading the book is a peaceful pleasure that has awakened in me a strong desire to find in my own life what this author and my husband already know: that gardening is satisfying spiritual work connecting souls to nature and beauty. I can now think of five of six friends that would love the book as well.

From amateur to expert, anyone interested in gardening and the fruits of the earth will be drawn into this delightful book. For each month, the reader is given detailed instructions for simple yet elegant recipes, decorating projects, and herbal concoctions. Everyone I tried has worked perfectly. (And they make great gifts!) This book is a must have for anyone who enjoys beauty and nature both outside and inside the home.

"Pinhook" talks about the wilderness being preserved by the creation of the Pogo wilderness area (Okeefenokee, Pinhook, Osceola). Light, easy, and long-lasting in its impact. I wish we could get more people committed to the subjects of Ms. Ray's efforts.

Janisse Ray continues in her appealing and warm style to bring us to environmental concerns in the northern Florida-southern Georgia swamp lands. What a great book! After taking the quiz I was relieved to find out that I had indeed picked the right "breed" this time around ;-) A recommended read for anyone already in a relationship... or even those simply out there looking for pick of the litter :-)

Porch Dogs is a great read, a very unusual and fun reference book and a DIY guide for assuming some control over a search for a satisfying relationship. Though the book may have been written with women in mind as a primary audience, don't discount the value to all readers regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. The underlying concept in the book, comparing men to dog breed characteristics, is designed to help the reader define and categorize some common male attributes. With the resulting improvement in understanding men, it is hoped that the reader will be able to better manage their relationship(s).

For the guys, the book can be very revealing, much like looking into a mirror. What I saw was right on the mark and funny as hell! Now I don't feel so bad about some of those allegedly annoying habits I've been told I have.

The Porch Dogs Quiz is very interesting and has sections for men and women. The resulting personality characterization is matched to one or more dog breeds.

Quite insightful and useful, the book is a terrific value and copies make excellent and unusual gifts for your friends and family members that need a little encouragement or guidance in their love lives.

The Pizza Popover on p. 111 is one of my faves!

Of all of my cookbooks that I have collected over the years, this is one that I turn to time after time... it is one of my all-time favorites! The recipes are super and I can always find inspiration when I need something yummy and special. Try the "Flawless Hollandaise" and you will be assured that this recipe alone is worth the price of the book! (I'll be making Eggs Benedict for New Years Day brunch using that recipe and will, once again, get raves from my guests!)

This biography is a must have for all Ellison fans. I could barely put it down to sleep!

I loved this bio of Ellison, the first to be published, and its focus on the early years. The writing is top-notch and Jackson has clearly done exhaustive research to uncover an amazing amount of fascinating detail. Belongs in any reader's collection devoted to American and African American literature and history.

This is the most detailed look at Ellison's life that I've seen. This biography covers his path from poverty in Oklahoma to becoming part of the literary elite in the early 1950's. The author examines Ellison's involvement in the black rights movement and his relationships with Langston Hughes and Richard Wright. From start to finish, this is a fascinating read.

An excellent reminder of the values that shaped our parents and grandparents. The stories are told in such a positive light, such that I long to live in those times that seem less harried, more focused on the importance of family and relationships.

I came away wanting to know more about this unique blend of personalities and their charm, and at the same time resolving to incorporate these ideals into my personal living.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this charming book. The author's style of writing paints such a vivid picture that I felt transported right into the story. Every chapter made me smile as I read about each new childhood adventure and about living in the warm embrace of a big,loving family. The author's light hearted and humorous words delighted me as I read her wonderful portrait of idyllic small town life in the south.

What a delightful book! Reading about her adventures and the family members that helped shape her life, I couldn't help but reflect on my own childhood. Her story brought back memories that I thought were long lost.

Highly recommended!
