I hope the author of this book reads this review, because he's probably just some regular guy who doesn't write a bunch of books and as such has no particular reason to believe he's some great writer. So I would like to tell that guy he has done a really nice job with this book.

I happened on this in a bookstore (not exactly the kind of place that carries NY Times bestsellers prominently displayed) and was interested in it as a political scientist, wanting an in depth treatment of the American policy process with more verisimilitude than Schoolhouse Rock's "I'm Just a Bill." The book nicely shows the sometimes surprising relationships between administrative agencies, the White House, Congress, and lobbyists in what was supposedly the apex of "iron triangle" government. The great depth provides fertile ground to spin lots of stories about the key moving parts in the policy process, which to me is one of the most valuable aspects of case studies in the research process. Agenda setting, expertise and information, legislative attention to issues, etc.: a lot of stuff familiar to contemporary political scientists is well illustrated in this book. I was secondarily very interested in the book's demonstration -- as a bonus, I think, rather than something the author set out to do -- of the effects of non-selfish preferences of individual actors in the policy process, for things resembling equity and fairness on the policy agenda and ultimate policy outcomes.

While (aside from the content of this book) I know next to nothing about pension policy except what one might learn by paying sporadic attention to statements from a (fully vested, I might add) TIAA-CREF account, I will confidently aver that the book will also be valuable to the most sophisticated audiences interested in public policy related to retirement, the aged, and pensions.

The book could not unjustly be accused of being ever so slightly repetitive, especially in the first couple chapters, but it's not so bad and the review is actually helpful in spite of the feeling of deja vu. It could probably come in about 25 pages shorter than it is, and that's not terribly inefficient in the end.

I as terminated without warning 5 months after my employer learned I suffered from MS, I had been employed for 6 years without a single disciplinary issue.
After reading this book I felt confident I had a discrimination case, The book is easy to understand, written in "plain English",
I contacted Rich Busse, and he now is representing me in my suit.
This book is a must read if you have questions concerning your employee rights.

For small business owners or people new to managing a smallstaff who need a fast, easy to read, and very clear guideline tohiring, paying, managing and firing employees this book is ideal. Employement law is a scary business, and ignorance can be painfully expensive. The book is well organized, comes with tabbed dividers, and spells out what to do, what NOT TO SAY OR DO, and gives a few cases to clarify meaning. No wasted words or opinions are presented, so you can find out what you need to know quickly.

Prof. Liebman and Rothstein write a very thorough casebook on employment law, beginning w/ the hiring and application process and continuing through to the retirement process. They have included the newest cases, pictures from certain cases (potentially to allow you to relate to the people, or at least see who you're reading about), and good questions to stimulate thought on the subject.

As my one word description of the casebook makes clear, it is a very thorough book. Each step of the employment process is covered. The book does not bore you, as they have searched for the most up to date and/or interesting cases.

As a casebook for employment law class, I feel that it is excellent. The key is that one could read the book without even having a professor to facilitate and still learn a great deal.

Employment law is a fast changing, hot subject in current American law today, and this book reflects the newest trends and cases.

A real legal textbook

A great book. If you've read Not in Our backyards and are interested to learn how environmental issues are solved in UK, read this book. It takes you all the way thorough the legal process, tells you where the problems are (usually scientific evidence - proving the cause-consequence relationship) and what the costs are. Is the way thorugh the legal process really worth it? In this book most of the cases have been successful and that can give you a good impression, but the author is cautios and warns you that not always everything works out ok. A book that will surprise you and teach you a lot of new, interesting points, but also make you see the real difficult side of taking your case to court.

This book shows that ERISA can be fun. I like the green cover, and all the inside jokes about the government (pay attention or you might miss 'em.) All in all, this is the kind of legal information book we've all been clamoring for. Hats off to Lewis!

This is great. It hits all the highlights of the various laws governing employment relationships. Of all the books I have on ADA and FMLA this is the best explanation I've seen. If you need or want to learn about employment law this is excellent. It's one volume packed with accurate information that can replace volumes of other books.
