New Hampshire Books

I found this book to be an excellent account of travel and history in 18th and 19th century New Hampshire and a great record of travel and life during that period. Well written and informative. A must read for anyone studying that era. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a sense of American life during this time period.

Let me tell you something, Fender might be the closest thing to a literary sea writer since Patrick O'Brian died. He has an uncanny ear for period dialogue and a way of plopping you right down in the middle of a historical story in a way that makes you feel as if you were actually there and could touch it. Ignore some of the snooty reviews about his earlier books. The guy is a treasure!

This timely anthology is about war viewed through the eyes of 127 poets. The poems cover wars from the Peloponnesian War to 9/11 and the current events in Iraq. It is not, as I originally thought, a polemic against war but rather "...a view of the world in conflict through the eyes of poets." Contributors include Pulitzer Prize winner Maxine Kumin; numerous state Poet Laureates; war veterans including World War II, Vietnam and Iraq; a 16 year old girl killed by a suicide bomber; Palestinians; and a host of other writers including a newly translated poem by Chaucer. This is a thoughtful, bittersweet effort by writers of all stripes trying to make sense out of actions that often defy logic or sense. A fine example of the quality available through small presses.

When exploring a new area or even our hometown, this book helps me find the site and activity I'm looking for. Whether we want a baseball field to toss a few pitches around, a playground to swing and play at or a new spot to hike or fish we easily find it by county, town or site name. What a great guide to the outdoor community!

THIS BOOK IS VERY WELL WRITTEN AND A TRULY GOOD READ.THIS BOOK COMPILES POETRY THAT ALLOWS US THE READER TO TO QUESTION, THINK, AND THINK BACK TO WHAT WAS AND WHAT IS THROUGH PARTS OF HIS LIFE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR A RELAXING, YET ENLIGHTNING PIECE OF REALITY.

This book was a delight to read...engaging and whimsical. Mr. Hart does a very good job providing the reader with an enjoyable autobiography. His political and religious views are conservative, and this book is a chronicle of how those views clashed with the Liberal Establishment of Dartmouth College.

For conservatives, Mr. Hart is like an undiscovered friend. In all honesty, though, even Liberals should find that this book is worth reading...even if you find yourself on the wrong side of Mr. Hart's philosophical fence.

Ponds and lakes are some of the gems of back-country hiking. In this book Steven Smith has done an excellent job describing how to get to these aquatic treasures in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Detailed descriptions are given for access and trails. Interesting and useful information is also provided on the lakes and ponds themselves. This includes the elevation, depth, and activities available at the lakes such as fishing, swimming, and birding. Notes on the natural history are intermingled with the text in a way that lets one visualize the tranquility of these aquatic habitats even from afar. Simple trail maps with key geographic features are also provided in many cases. If you hike the White Mountains, and if you enjoy lakes and ponds, this book is a must.

If you want to see America at it's idealistic and patriotic best, you will find it in these pages. It would be hard to imagine a young person reading this book and not rushing off to volunteer in the political process. Levin's photo's and Kanteres' text document the courage, commitment, exhileration, and heartbreak of presidential politics. If you've never been on the ground in New Hampshire to live and breathe the New Hampshire presidential primary, you will feel like you have once you've held this book in your hands.

This book has been one of my favorites in the Hardy BoysCasefiles series. I have the about 150 Hardy's books and this is thebest. The action is amazing and you never know who is behind all the horrible things when Frank and Joe go on a vacation to Callie's grumpy great uncle's maple syrup farm. Amazing action, and truly a great book. A must have for any and ALL Hardy Boys fans.
