This index was instrumental in taking the PTO exam. It is extremely useful and is a tremendous resource for patent practitioners. The items are well sorted and cross referenced. I am surprised more people are not aware of this great index!

As with the previous book by these two authors, the language is clear and concise. While written to address legal issues, the language is understandable by anyone in the business community.

Well done.

Great single source for U.S. patent prosecution
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-25
I graduated law school with honors in intellectual property. I have had the opportunity to read a number of textbooks on patents and patent law. These materials by Donner, the two volume set plus the softcover digest and CD, are the best single source of information on prosecuting a patent (trying to get a patent approved) in the U.S. that I've ever come across. I bought it hoping it would help in a particular prosecution I was involved in, and sure enough, Donner delivered. I think this set should be on the bookshelf of any patent agent or patent attorney.

I first read this book 6 months ago at the patent office library. (the older edition)This title is a set of one main book, one case digest and one CD. When you receive the shipment, always check that you receive the full set of one main book, one case digest and one CD. The layout and subjects covered are excellent.

Technology is know how to achieve human purposes by articulating a solid and up-to-date knowledge base with the necessary resources (machines, instruments, hardware and/or software, etc.) Many companies world wide have indeed found out how to achieve particular purposes differently or better than anybody else. In order to benefit from their efforts and appropriate their investements in R&D, they patent their technological innovations.

This book tells you "how-to" know who has achieved a particular purpose and how, by explainig you the necessary tools and techniques to scan the external environment of your company. This is a very important stage in any innovation management process since you can profile and see the whole technological trajectory: its major and more significant players, required knowledge base and resources, and where that paricular trajectory is heading.

If you are involved in the strategic management of technology and innovation you will find this book a very important reading for the success of your company in the future. In order to enhance your competitiveness you need to know what is going on and this book tells you how to do it.

Patently-O Book Review
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-09
Professor Thomas has written an excellent treatise that will be very well regarded for years to come. The book includes 600+ pages of text that is surprisingly readable plus a large appendix in CD form.

This is not primarily a textbook for law students. No, the book provides answers and focused analysis that a practitioner will find extremely useful. The focus of the book is clearly the interplay between patents and the FDA. However, the book also details the pharmaceutical patent prosecution process and particular litigation issues that are important in pharmaceutical patent litigation. The editorial review on Amazon (above) does a good job of describing the contents.

I have found the book useful and would recommend it to you as well.

Top 5 book! Required required for all Undergraduates
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-20
If one were to agree with everything any writer says, particularly in a book of this magnitude and depth, there would be an immediate cloud of suspicion yet, in spite of the fact that I do not agree with all of the points made in Drahos' work, it is one the best books that I have ever read. To give some context to this statement, I happen to think that John Dewey's "How We Think", Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" and Sorensen's "Thought Experiments" are near equals of the book in this review. Any book that can only be read 2-3 pages a night and that stimulates one to ask so many questions about creativity, economics, metaphysics and education at such a fundamental level, necessitates it being put on a "must read" list near the top.

No doubt there are many who will see this review and say "what a wanker" but that's because more than 90% of the world's workforce has no clue as to why they are really there nor what the cornerstone of all economic activity actually is.

Inquiring minds want to know. To maximize the latent potential of this book, I would recommend this critical thinking site which interestingly is also Australian ..

All companies need better thinkers and those that understand why they are there because when you know the "why", the "what" is a whole lot easier.

One caveat: I strongly disagree with the suggestions in the book that IP belongs to everyone or that it "must" be shared and will refute this in a book of my own, hopefully by the end of 2003. Otherwise, the book rates up there in the way, Jose Wales, Amadeus and Good Will Hunting do as movies. Substance counts! Drahos gives you your money's worth. (I have no connection with Australia, Australians nor Dr. Drahos. I found this book in the course of my own research on Amazon.com)
