splendid factor that must be taken into consideration: epidemics at war
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-06
"Many of the war stories are depressingly familiar though most of the people think that ``The deads are killed by clashes'', in reality, it is the epidemics. This is an engrossing, unique and authentic book in its area of history and it reserves attention as the most through exploration to the date of the pandemic's significance in Ottoman History.
Ýf you are interested in war history, you surely know the beginning and the end of the wars, who won and who lost, generally accepted taken lessons, and what should have been done etc., etc. Dr. Hikmet Ozdemir's Book is touching on a different subject at World War I. Up to now I did not notice and was not aware of the numbers killed by disasters, epidemics, typhus, spotted fevers, dysentery, influenza at World War I. While I was reading the book engrossingly, i was really depressed by the numbers of dead, due to the epidemics on the battlefield.
I am caught up in a first-rate medical-drama which leads to one of the most gripping issues and overly persuaded that the war is out of humanity, consequently asked to myself `` Why do the human-beings still choose the war in order to solve the problems although there are thousands of evidences of that war was brutal, sweeping and destructive in the pages of dusty history shelves and can the feelings of horror which is come by wars make today's leaders bring at a table in order to tackle the issues of our technological age before the epidemics of this twenty first century break out ?
Dr Ozdemir makes the point that vastly soldiers died of infectious diseases than of combat wounds. 91% in Crimean War; 73% in Ottoman - Greek War (1897); 75%, namely 240000 of 325000 in The Great War of Ottoman casualties were due to diseases. Those are incredible numbers. In the introduction chapter, the author refers to illustrative figures, statistics, and historical facts in order to prove the weight of diseases in combat losses. In subsequent chapters, he mentions fluctuations in balance of power in battles due to pandemics, types of illnesses that cause the deaths of millions of soldiers and civilians, and heroism of medical personnel serving in front lines. Few historians realize that epidemics were so important at wars in the history while assessing a war. It was one of the crucial factors that determine ``who will lose? '', may also be carried allied soldiers in our time. I think this criterion absolutely must not be skipped in the eyes of today's war managers and it should be taken as an eminent factor during planning.
The author deserves plaudits for his eminent and statistical deductions and for a lively style which makes his solid scholarship readable. His combination of medical, political and social history is an effective one and should appeal both to professional historians and to general leaders. This is a fine, galloping account of the typhoid, spotted fever, dysentery pandemic that killed millions of people in 4-year war. In some ways it was a page of the middle ages bound into the twentieth century. No plague ever killed so many people in a short time."

Do you want to know the real enemy of Turkey in WWI?

Review Date: 2008-10-10
Have you heard that more victims of war died of disease than of battle wounds? Although this is the fact, disease is rarely treated in depth in histories of war. Some scholars go further and suggest that epidemic diseases played an important role not only in wars but in the world history, architecture of cities and castles as well. You can find a good literature review on this subject, especially through the introduction chapter of this book.
Other than Introduction, the book has eight more chapters and two appendices. In second chapter, the Crimean War, the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878, the Ottoman-Greek War of 1897, and the Balkan War are reviewed briefly from the casualties of diseases perspective.
The author, a research professor at the Turkish History Council in Ankara, Turkey, provides an extensive documentation of disease and death across the Ottoman Empire during World War I in the subsequent chapters. The author examines the effects that disease and epidemic had on the outcome of the war, using the hospital records and the information on regional disease prevalence.
Being a scientific study, the volume has numerous tables of statistics, a rich reference list and a bibliography at the end for the following researchers. In conclusion, not only for the researchers, but for the ones who want to know the real enemy of Turkey in World War I, the book has in depth and satisfactory information.

Murphey should get an astounding applause for his work. There is an incredible appeal that 'drains' you right into the pages of endless original arguments. The Ottoman Devlet (not Empire if you read the book carefully, I borrowed Maksudoglu terms for the Ottoman) finally received a fair judgement for their history. The research was acurately done with rare details, those which never surfaced before, which cleared out any pontless subjectivity mostly found on previous studies of the Ottomans. 'The sick man' was made 'sick' in the first place.

The rationalization of the Ottoman military might was the best part in the book. I am not surprised if this work becomes a classic.

Rhoads Murphey clears up a lot of mystification brought into the subject by authors who previously relied solely upon Western sources for understanding the Ottoman state. Some, for example, would talk about the Ottoman Empire as the perfect military state, designed around conquest, and others, thinking more of Ottoman decline, of the corruption, inefficiency, and lack of technical skill of their forces. Yet, a study of Ottoman history reveals, naturally, that neither of these extremes were true, and that the Ottomans had to contend with many of the same difficulties, military and administrative, that all of the western European states were attempting to overcome. For someone who really wants to learn how the Ottomans achieved what the did, and failed to achieve some of their more ambitious goals, this book is refreshing in that it teaches rather than obscures.

Pan Michael, like any Sienkiewicz work, is a wonderful read due to its prose, his wonderful characterization and due to his ability to bring color to his works.

Reading Pan Michael, like reading Teutonic Knights or Fire and Sword, is like opening a doorway into another time......this particular time....medieval Poland. Stepping through this doorway, you encounter all of the sights, the sounds and the lives of the characters within.

I highly recommend Pan Michael, and any other book you may find by Sienkiewicz.

A wonderful read, "Pan Michael" rounds out the Trilogy that has bridged stylistic centuries and proven there is an ageless recipe for plot, drama, character and objective. NO reader, regardless of ethnic background can fail to feel for the incredibly detailed main characters in this novel, such as Pan Michael or the daring woman, Basha. Action is not stinted and combines with the other elements in this colorful and sweeping epic to demonstrate history in one of the least well-documented areas of 17th century Europe. In Poland and Lithuania, where the edges of three great religions, and dozens of ethnic groups ebbed and flowed over the multicolored plains in endless kaleidescopes of struggle, Sinkiewicz paints a vast landscape of dramatic and epic action. He does this without losing the artist's eye for color or the political opportunist's artful demonstration of back-room dealings and rationales used by the shakers and movers of the novel's time-period (for it IS an historical novel). Not only is this clearly done with analogies for the time in which the novel was written (pointed examples clearly exist to parallel conditions in 19th century occupied Poland), but it resonantes with us in our hearts across the intervening century-plus, and in this, or any great republic. There is no doubt the reader will be more curious about the history of the period, and will want to read the other two novels in The Trilogy (With Fire and Sword, and The Deluge), but this is a stand-alone novel as well. The other books do not need to be read, but if I could impose upon the reader only one bit of advice: all of these books are precious, and they are in chronological order. All three will cause sleepless nights where you will be unable to put down the books, so it might be best to schedule them for a vacation! Written by the novelist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1905 for Quo Vadis, these earlier books (The Trilogy, of which Pan Michael is the third book) for which he received grief from the critics but kudos from the reading public, were probably greater works, and are certainly recommended by this writer for all who would have the common reader love their creations.

Pardon Me, It's Ham, Not Turkey is a children's picturebook about the American tradition of Thanksgiving. Written in singsong rhyme by award-winning author Lisa Suhay and cheerily illustrated by Society of Illustrators honoree Pamela Barcita, Pardon Me, It's Ham, Not Turkey tells of the unusual presidential tradition of pardoning a turkey, the real first Thanksgiving that took place nearly two years before the arrival of the Pilgrims (and probably included a meal of ham rather than turkey!), and much more. A final page of historical notes rounds out this lighthearted reflection upon the origin of a cherished holiday.

I came across this book in a course on Byzantium, and was very impressed with Safi's analysis of the Saljuk influence on Islam, and most particularly in the realm of the mystics bartering baraka for orthodoxy and political influence. Safi's argument is convincing, even if it is a movement away from more traditional scholarship. This book is very well written and engaging definitely one of my favorite books in the realm of Islamic scholarship.

I was very intrigued by this book. It is an in depth look at medieval Islamic society, and I found it fascinating that there is not just one view on issues, but always a range of perspectives. It was particularly good on the relationship between religion and politics, and also the social role of scholars and mystics. beautifully written!

The Wandering Jew and Constantinople in the Byzantine Empire

In many ways, this mature work resembles his "BEN-HUR": it covers
a period of many years, and its plot is built by putting together
historical and geographical facts, and by weaving in a thread of
romance. The "boat race" introduced in this story suggests the
famous "chariot race" in "BEN-HUR". This property has value in
awakening interest in a fascinating period of history, and fixing
in the mind of the audience many historic events and customs,
while its treatment of the religious questions involved is both
broad and comprehensive. (Helen Rex Keller)

A fascinating history based on the wandering jew legend

This novel recounts events leading to the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453. The legendary "wandering jew", in guise of a "Prince of India" aids in bringing about the downfall of the city and its empire by aiding and advising the Turkish Sultan Mehmed II.

The viewpoints of both the Greek and Turkish sides are shown in detail, with sympathy for both. Added to this are many vivid descriptions of the city and the important characters of the day. All in all, an interesting read.

The central character of the Jew/Prince is a fascinating portrait. I found it much more effective than the other 19th century treatment of the legend by Eugene Sue, "Le Juif Errant."

Each poem selected and translated is a love story come alive. Soul dancing, heart opening, Divine breathing, alive. Deep, vibrant, contemplative. I don't know which I enjoyed more - this book or Jennifer Ferraro's original mystical poetry offered in "Divine Nostalgia". Her attunement to the sweetness of the sacred in life is unmatched.

I am a helpless renderer, but paraphrasing seems to work best here.
From the opening poem in this book, to give one a sample of the fine, fine, flavor (my rendering/expounding of part of that poem):

"I was asked how the Beloved and me were getting along these days?"
I responded, "Don't be nosey, because -- what of it? For any events that come my way Infinite Knowledge and Compassion sent. All that has entered my ken has become precious, sacred ... and is treated as such. Thus every war -- every internal or external war -- for me has ended."

Sorry to any scholars about that rendering, also who would know who Nesimi is, whose name is mentioned in the original verse. He was new to me. And as said, I just can't help but to frolic with good music, jam and tamper with it. Why not - "what of it", Nesimi might say!

Whatever cracks in your walls and cages Rumi & Hafiz & Kabir may not have broken more open for you so that God -- the Sun -- can seep in ... this book can help rend that veil. "Quarreling with God" is an excellent work, an important contribution to intelligent, spiritual poetry.

This book is an introduction to small-scale turkey farming. It is geared to the backyard farmer or older 4H student who has never raised turkeys before. It begins with a description of housing needs for turkeys, which includes building plans for a poultry house and sun porch. It describes poults, brooding, and flock management. The book includes plans for a variety of equipment, such as homemade feeders, waterers, and incubators. There are chapters on breeding, health, killing and processing, and preserving and cooking, as well as a small collection of recipes. At the back of the book is a glossary, a list of references, a list of state extension departments, a list of suppliers, and a list of diagnostic laboratories.

The text is written for readers who have some animal sense and some basic experience with building things by hand. Technical terms and processes are explained both in the text and with diagrams. All in all, it is a clear introduction and should prove useful to the beginning turkey farmer.
