Mrs. Motes continues her efforts to stratify by ethnic groups the population of South Carolina at the taking of the 1850 federal census. This volume, her third based upon the 1850 census, specifies about 2,600 persons of New England or Mid-Atlantic birth who were living in South Carolina in that census year. The census enumerators found approximately 2,600 of these Yankees living in South Carolina in 1850, two-thirds of them from the Mid-Atlantic region.

Mrs. Motes transcribed her information from thirteen reels of microfilm covering the 29 South Carolina counties in 1850. She has arranged those findings in alphabetical order by surname. Each individual is identified by age, sex, occupation, country of birth, county of residence, and household enumeration number. Individuals living in another family's household are further identified according to the name of the household head, even if a native Carolinian. The front matter to the book includes a helpful author's preface and a list of South Carolina county codes. The volume concludes with indexes to names, places, and occupation.

Steiner's Views on Spiritual Science Explored!

The Master taught Steiner his spiritual mission in life; to develop knowledge that synthesized science and religion. To this objective he devoted the rest of his life, guided by what he called "the occult power behind me." This is a lively lecture that emboldens and embraces the tenets of Anthroposophy and will illuminate any questions one might be having on the subject! Excellent reading.

Exellent first rate book

Review Date: 2007-05-04
First rate book on a little known corner of history. While the Muslim conquest of Spain is fairly well known little is known of the Muslim colonies that existed in Northern Italy, Southern France and Switzerland. Partly due to the initial conquests of Spain, partly due to Muslims being shipwrecked and washed up in southern France for a sort period of time they resided in this part of Europe, settled, established Mosques and intermarried.

Sites have been discovered according to the author of a Mosque in southern France and grave with bodies facing Mecca in the traditional Islamic manner.

The book also covers the relations between the small colonies and al-Andalus (Islamic Spain) and the relations between al-Andalus and its Christian neighbours.

An excellent well written book. Just a pity about the publisher (my copy is in awful condition, pages starting to fall out etc)

Excellent Idea For the Seeing Impaired and the Bond You Never Knew!

Review Date: 2006-06-24
This Thorndike Press version of this novel is a real treat for the seeing impaired. The large print is a joy and easy to read and the hardcover binding and design is very good too.

As for the novel itself, no one will ever mistake Fleming's works for Hemingway or even Agatha Christie although at some points, Fleming's writing comes close to imitating their styles but when it comes to fast moving and great plots, this novel is probably the best Bond adventure ever written.

The writing is rather juvenile and reminded me of one of the Hardy Boy's adventures that I used to read as a child but if you take this as extremely light reading to pass the time (I read this while recovering at hospital and completed it in less than two days although I spent most of the time sleeping)you will not be disappointed.

This quick page-turner has a number of plot twists and colourful characters such as Bond's father-in-law, the crime syndicate head and his wife, Tracy, his arch nemesis, Blofeld and Ms. Bunt among others.

What's really good about this novel though is that we get to see a soft, vulnerable side of James Bond here. Bond seems to be tired and a little fed up of spying and even considers resigning. He starts to reminisce about Vesper, his love interest from his first adventure in Casino Royale and decides to make a pit stop there, ironically finding the real love of his life there as well!

Overall, we get a much more believable character who is a lot more human than in his earlier portrayals in what would be Fleming's 3rd last Bond novel. If you are a fan of James Bond but not necessarily great writing, this is probably the best Bond adventure that you can get which truly gives you an insight into every aspect of the character. You actually feel his sorrow at the end as Bond becomes more human here.

This novel may actually be a response to Fleming's many critics at the time which even included John Le Carre who complained that Bond was simply a thug who apathetically commits crimes against humanity as a normal course of life. The Bond you see here does not fit this description anymore.

Recommended reading.

Any college-level arts library collection including classes or studies in stained glass will want to include this specialty history, which examines the collaboration between draftsmen and glass painters in southern Germany and Switzerland from 1480 to 1530. While Albrecht Durer is the focus here, others are examined for their contributions to the stained glass field and Painting on Light is packed with drawings and color examples of their works in a unique, appealing presentation.

Von Arnim's witty portrayal of fin-de-siecle married life.
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-26
This is one of Von Arnim's very best novels, full of surprising wit and sometimes caustic criticism of the lonely existence of an intelligent British woman in a turn-of-the-century aristocratic German household. In particular, the childbirth scenes are chilling, and reminiscent of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper, though Von Arnim typically treats the topic with more humor. The ending is as brilliant as those of her contemporary Edith Wharton.

This gripping and disturbing book is quite simply a study in perversity - not to be missed, and truly unforgettable!

Description from the book dust jacket:

Imagine that you are listening to someone tell you everything. Imagine that this person, a woman of a certain station - wellborn, monied, traveled, wearied with her labors to discover the aptest habitation for her troublesome health - may have killed someone, may have murdered someone, a schoolmate, long ago. Imagine that this woman is the kind of woman who would attach no particular importance to the business of killing someone. Imagine that she is the kind of woman who would attach no particular importance to whatever her commerce might have been with the life and death of another person. Imagine that the woman you are listening to would attach immensely more importance to the character of the light that reveals you to her than she would to the fact that it is a human being - you! - whom the light reveals to her. Imagine a person like this and you will have imagined the chillingly familiar central figure in Sheila Kohler's uniquely disturbing literary debut, a psychosexual striptease that accomplishes its exquisitely macabre theater sentence by icy sentence.
