I loved it when I read it years ago. I have continued to re-read it. And I love it now.

My public had to dig it up from the hidden stacks, but a few years back I checked out and read The Revenger's Tragedy, which Stewart quotes as epigrams before chapters. I fell in love with Shakespeare's "The Tempest" after reading "This Rough Magic," and other novels assume a knowledge of Greek drama. It's great to see this new edition, but I wonder if a Gothic romance of this erudition could be published today.06880218595002008-03-27Wonderful bookThis is an absolutely fantastic mystery/romance. I own it and have read it multiple times, along with most of the rest of Mary Stewarts books. It's one of the books I never get tired of. No matter how many times I read it, I still can't put it down when I'm in the middle of it. I highly, highly recommend it.06880218593112008-02-15Not as good as I hopedThis is the first Mary Stewart novel I've read and while I enjoyed the book's atmosphere and lead characters, I was a bit let down by the plot on the whole.
From reviews I had read, I was hoping for a dark and intricately plotted mystery. While there were several very suspenseful passages, the story was a bit too predictable and the ending seemed to drag on a little too long.

I did enjoy the fact that 'Nine Coaches Waiting' is mainly a mystery with just a sprinkling of romance. However, I felt that even with the main focus not on the romance, that part of the story could have been handled a lot better. The romantic entanglements between the two main protagonists seem much too rushed and unrealistic.

All that being said, I still enjoyed reading 'Nine Coaches Waiting' (even though it did not live up to expectations)and will give the author's other books a try.06880218594462007-07-01A good dark mysteryI enjoyed this book. It's the story of a young girl 23 who becomes a governess in a French mansion with a dark side to a little boy and she falls in love with a handsome but dark and mysterious man named Raoul. It was a good gothic mystery when strange things start happening to her.06880218595672007-05-05Stands up to the test of time. This book was my introduction to Mary Stewart. I found it in a box of books in the attic when I was about twelve or thirteen. I read it and most if not all of her other novels throughout my teenage and young adult years. I reread this recently (30 years later) and find it is still enjoyable. It seems all the romances on the market these days are nothing but bodice rippers and they get boring real fast. I much prefer books with a plot and character development. I highly recommend Mary Stewart's novels to every one.

Has any one else noticed that her characters smoke so many cigarettes in her novels? Maybe I do because I'm an ex smoker. Some of the dark passions of Jane Eyre here combine with the Cinderella theme to make a stirring suspense story. Wonderful photos, and "patterns" from the clothing. the only problem is Kirke never bothers to tell you what the scale is, so making these patterns is almost impossible. Her directions for making the patterns are laughable. The patterns are white lines on black. Why include patterns if you aren't going to put them in a usable form? There are people out there who can and have made clothing from this book. You will have to be very smart and well trained to do so. that said it is still one of the best books on a fashion designer I have seen.

Maybe Kirke will redesign the book with the pattern section properly done. Then the book would be worth more then $100. 08118199735222007-11-11A Must-Have for Fashion DesignersThis book is even better than I hoped. The photographs are stellar and for some designs - a bird's eye view of the pattern peices are included. Try to wrap your head around those non-conventional cutting techniques! I bought this for myself but this would be an excellent gift for someone interested in Fashion History, Fashion Design, Fine / Decorative Arts, etc. Super-Gorgeous book!08118199735222007-10-06This is an excellent book and a must for costumer's libraryA great book on Vionnet's work and life. It has a lot of sewing patterns with instuctions from the WWI era to late 1930's; the patterns include day and evening dresses and frocks, capes and coats, slips and pajamas. Plus there a lot more pictures of Vionnet's clothing. The perfect gift for a fashion student. It is a pity that you do not hear so much about her.08118199735222007-08-18Madeleine VionnetThis book is an absolute dream right through from the beautiful hard cover to the wonderful photographs, history and patterns. I am a Designer/Patternmaker and is the most beautiful book I have ever bought on fashion. Betty Kirke has put a lot of love and care into this treasure and any student of fashion, especially patternmaking and draping has to purchase this and learn a whole lot about bias cutting.Back in print at last, with a ravishing new cover, Madeleine Vionnet is "not only the best book on Vionnet, but perhaps the best book ever on a fashion designer" (Out). Madeleine Vionnet (1876–1975) was the greatest dressmaker in the world. Considered a genius for her innovations with the bias cut—the most difficult and desirable cut in clothing design—she has a fanatical following. Vionnet was a maverick, her results spectacular. She dressed the stars of the '30s, invented new pattern-making techniques, and eschewed corsets for her models. Vionnet's dresses are virtually un-copiable and highly coveted by vintage clothing collectors. Madeleine Vionnet is the definitive study of this venerated artist. Illustrated with more than 400 photographs, line drawings, and watercolors, it also includes 38 original patterns for Vionnet dresses. As the Art Deco Society of L.A.'s newsletter has said, anyone "interested in Art Deco or fashion must have this book."Madeleine Vionnet's greatest distinction as a designer was her discovery of the bias cut. Cutting patterns along the bias forces the fabric to cling to the body and move with it, which created her trademark look of draped, form-conscious clothing. When designer Issey Miyake first saw a Vionnet dress, it was like the first time he saw Winged Victory at the Louvre: "I thought then that the statue of Nike had been reincarnated in the dresses by Vionnet. She had captured the most beautiful aspect of classical Greek aesthetics: the body and movement." Vionnet's long career as a dressmaker and designer began with the 20th century. Always conscious of women's bodies and inspired in part by modern dancer Isadora Duncan, she soon dispensed with corsets and other constricting garments, and used barefoot models to present her first solo collection. Though simple, her dresses were never plain; the use of a Cartier necklace as a halter strap is a classic Vionnet innovation. This inimitable combination of comfort and glamour made Vionnet's clothes a favorite among European nobility, Hollywood royalty--notably Marlene Dietrich, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Katharine Hepburn--as well as socialites and other trendsetters. Close to a century after its introduction, the bias cut remains an important element in clothing design.
Madeleine Vionnet is a tall book that echoes many of the designs inside. It is filled with contemporary photographs of the clothing, period pictures shot by Man Ray and Steichen, design sketches, and, perhaps most interestingly, patterns for the clothes. The accompanying text traces Vionnet's evolution from an 11-year-old seamstress, through her days apprenticing at the famed Callot Soeurs couture house in Paris, and on into the design empire that secured her an enduring spot in fashion history.030012029XPoiret (Metropolitan Museum of Art Publications)0847829537Lanvin2843234166Gres1561584975Couture Sewing Techniques0300121539Balenciaga and His Legacy: Haute Couture from the Texas Fashion Collection1844Fashion Design1841Commercial1829Graphic Design336832011Design & Decorative Arts1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books2031General2020Photography1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books292642General1862Fashion1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books518506Commercial1862Fashion1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books518508Designers1862Fashion1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books518510History1862Fashion1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books779552General1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books2375General2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2445Women2437Specific Groups2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books5144General5126Crafts & Hobbies48Home & Garden1000Subjects283155Books5184Textile Arts5126Crafts & Hobbies48Home & Garden1000Subjects283155Books713334011General AAS5126Crafts & Hobbies48Home & Garden1000Subjects283155Books69893General4952France4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books491378Design468206Humanities465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712982011General AAS465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books3A1L9CUJ87TQLEcclectica - A mixture of some of my favourite topicsWEGKRSA1RPPBFavorite Fashion Tomes3ESK7ETVB7DL2Women's historic costuming diagrams0966692837http://www.amazon.com/ABCs-Credit-Information-Not-Enough-Small/dp/0966692837%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D09666928372447328http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517Z8PDX95L._SL75_.jpg7548http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517Z8PDX95L._SL160_.jpg160103http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517Z8PDX95L.jpg475307Frances Anne HernanFaye SchliepPaperback332.7439780966692839400966692837EnglishEnglishEnglish8101295USD$12.95McGavick Field Publishing1130Book2003-07McGavick Field PublishingMcGavick Field PublishingThe ABC's of Credit: Too Much Information--Not Enough Time to Read the Small Print455400000005.028609666928375012004-07-14Excellent resource.Excellent information for people of all ages. Very easy to read and understand with helpful examples in a variety of credit situations. Gives you an edge so you can limit financial hardships now as you prepare for the future.09666928375012004-04-21This book is not about what you are doing wrong..Instead it is about getting the most out of what you have by managing your expenditures. Taking the time to understand your financial potential. Every penny counts. If you start paying attention to the pennies and to the interest you are paying on credit cards for the extras in life like movies and pizza. One of the best tips in the book is on a big item don't charge the sales tax, pay cash. Paying interest on sales tax, tips and entertainment costs are the reasons we never get out from under the interest burden.09666928375012004-04-21Great information about every day issuesEspecially for anyone trying to navigate the tricky waters of both insurance and employment benefits. including pensions and 401 k's. Knowing what you have now is the key to being able to manage in an emergency. None of us want to think about losing the job we have had for years, but stuff happens. The health insurance that you have may not seem like the best deal but if you lose it completely it could become a major financial burden. Hernan and Schliep are big on having a safety cushion in the event of job loss.09666928375012004-04-21The back cover reviews lead me to the purchase of this book:Because they were from people that recognized good writing and people a lot more like you and me than the wall street gurus that constantly advise us and encourage us to cross over from main street to wall street when our interests may not be as well served as the big spenders who make money when we the consumer buys their wares and especially when the employers can cut expenses by cutting jobs and benefits. The ABC's of Credit is essential reading for people interested in ideas and information regarding the many aspects of credit. This is not a book written by financial experts telling you how to invest for the future. Long term planning begins with taking care of today. This book is about how you can save more of what you earn by using some of the tips and learning the language and understanding the market place.2720Credit Ratings & Repair2717Personal Finance3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books2722General2717Personal Finance3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books266120General266119Finance173509Accounting & Finance173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0894806238http://www.amazon.com/Bistro-Cooking-Patricia-Wells/dp/0894806238%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D089480623831764http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51T4X4BYAHL._SL75_.jpg7559http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51T4X4BYAHL._SL160_.jpg160126http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51T4X4BYAHL.jpg500393Patricia WellsPaperback641.59449780894806230800894806238EnglishEnglishEnglish9201595USD$15.95Workman Publishing Company1320Book1989-01-11Workman Publishing CompanyWorkman Publishing CompanyBistro Cooking019628016232120720674USD$6.74485USD$4.8533420011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewWGUlcZzkLTXScMJYkp8HRmmhAjkq2hBWKFGB68mtmzupHeaNOQBSPOAhYPqK0JEiaTrlHdjj8bh%2FXYlWPwQyTQ%3D%3D1085USD$10.85Usually ships in 24 hours5.028608948062385002008-04-02Great!I love the recipes in this book. The first one I tried (Cheese puffs) have been in demand in my house ever since. This book is a nice introduction into French cooking without being overwhelming. It's comfortable and down to earth... plus, the food has been delicious.08948062382132008-02-25Basic bistro eatsVery basic advice: a roast beef and tomato sandwich with creme fraiche for example. Simple recipes with thrifty cuts of meats for stews, soups (just add liquid!) along with many potato recipes (with more creme fraiche) from well-known and obscure bistros throughout France. Note: quiche is called 'tarte' here with no cross reference. Salads with anything you'd put into a sandwich, oil and vinegar dressing. Good new-cook gift or a quick read for the armchair traveler but I expected more from this famous food writer. 08948062385332007-08-29How can one do so much with such basic ingredients and simple recipes? This cookbook contains a collection of recipes inspired by and taken from a wide array of French bistros. Patricia Wells has assembled a terrific array of cookbooks, but this may be her best. With a few exceptions, these recipes take what I consider to be basic ingredients and turn them into a wide array of delicious, easy to prepare dishes. There are a few recipes that call for things that are uncommon to the American palate (e.g. rabbit), but overall this cookbook contains a huge number of easy to make, accessable recipes that will be enjoyed by Americans. The book is divided into 12 sections covering salads, desserts, pasta, soups, etc. It is also a regional tour through France with a diverse selection of recipes from big city bistros and small town or rural restaurants. Each recipe has a paragraph or two describing the bistro from which it was taken and some discussion of regional cuisine. One thing that I REALLY liked about this cookbook is that it will give you ideas for other concoctions. That is, as I was trying some of the recipes, I was constantly thinking `using A with B' is a great idea. For example, there is a great recipe for poached eggs in a wine sauce. A great idea! Another (minor but important) thing that I liked about this book was that it was bound so that it could be propped open on the kitchen counter. There are also flaps on the front and back cover that can block the page open so that you don't have to go fishing through the book if it does flip closed. This is a cookbook that we return to again and again, definitely worth the money.08948062385122007-07-23A french bistro classicThis book is great! I've lived in France and I believe this book really does deliver classic bistro fare without all the grease you can find in so many sub par Paris bistros! I agree with another reviewer that the recipes are hit and miss. For instance, the potato gratin just doesn't do it for me.

Most of the dishes require ingredients you find at the regular grocery store, are quick to make, and delicious to eat. I appreciate her complement/menu ideas. I feel that I've slightly improved on a couple of her lamb recipes and now include them in my list of recipes for entertaining.

I wish I had the same quality of book for southern French style of cooking.
08948062385442007-04-12can't be beatThis is a cookbook as a cookbook should be. The recipes are direct, succinct and just what one needs to prepare the dish without elaborate fuss. And most of the dishes are great. If I had to settle for one cookbook only, this would be it.Bistro is warm. Bistro is family. Bistro is simple, hearty, generous cuisine-robust soups and country omelets, wine-scented stews and bubbling gratins, and desserts from a grandmother's kitchen. Researched and written by Patricia Wells, author of The Food Lover's Guide to Paris and The Food Lover's Guide to France, together with over 220,000 copies in print, here is a celebration of the no-nonsense, inexpensive, soul-satisfying cuisine of the neighborhood restaurants of France.
BISTRO COOKING contains over 200 scrumptious bistro recipes made lighter and quicker for the way we cook today. Warm Poached Sausage with Potato Salad. Benoit's Mussel Soup. Guy Savoy's Fall Leg of Lamb. Beef Stew with Wild Mushrooms and Orange, Chicken Basquaise, Pasta with Lemon, Ham, and Black Olives, L'Ami Louis' Potato Cake, Provencal Roast Tomatoes, Pears in Red Wine, and Golden Cream and Apple Tart.
Throughout, lively notes and sidebars capture the world of bistro owners in the kitchen, les grands chefs, and more. Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club. Winner of the 1989 IACP Seagram Food and Beverage Award. Over 166,000 copies in print.
In this warm look into the world of French bistro food, eminent food writer Patricia Wells reveals her love for this simple, robust cuisine in a collection of recipes garnered from France's best bistros. From Warm Potato Salad with Herbed Vinaigrette to Lamb Stew in White Wine to Pear Clafoutis, Wells admits her preference for hearty, homey bistro dishes. Through clearly written recipes, Wells encourages cooks to buy the best ingredients and turn them into fragrant, warming dishes. Each recipe has a note telling where it came from and alluding to its flavor. Pithy quotes throughout the book relate to bistro style--in cooking, serving, and eating--and historical quotations give a cultural connotation. Wine choices reach deep into the heart of France, from a crisp white from Provence such as a Chateau Simone with lamb, to a good Côtes du Rhone (Cru du Coudelet) with guinea hen. From the introduction to the last dessert recipe (for Prunes in Red Wine), Bistro Cooking is sure to please not just the novice in the kitchen, but the experienced cook as well. --Susan Loomis, Amazon.co.uk0060936525Patricia Wells' Trattoria: Simple and Robust Fare Inspired by the Small Family Restaurants of Italy0060752440Vegetable Harvest: Vegetables at the Center of the Plate0688143563Simply French0471292753Sauces: Classical and Contemporary Sauce Making (2nd Edition)0880015047Auberge Of The Flowering Hearth21Reference11444Almanacs & Yearbooks11448Atlases & Maps385096011Audiobooks11461Business Skills2572Careers11626Catalogs & Directories11472Consumer Guides11475Dictionaries & Thesauruses11628Education11713Encyclopedias11761Etiquette11773Foreign Languages11871Fun Facts11880Genealogy408268General2576Job Hunting300955Large Print10975Law11891Publishing & Books11902Quotations301751Spanish-Language Reference1099190Study Guides11904Test Prep Central11970Words & Language12015Writing1000Subjects283155Books4233General6Cooking, Food & Wine1000Subjects283155Books4280French4275European4262Regional & International6Cooking, Food & Wine1000Subjects283155Books67600General16940France16917Europe27Travel1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR2LABP0BS0RR7XMy current cookbook wish listRWDEWEMT7ICV8Cookbooks I use again and againR2170JPJOGFBI2The Insta-Expert Cookbook Library2L25IA0WSITNZMy Essential Cookbook Favorites1UY36U6AKI76Dream Bookshelf of Food BooksKU6T93SV0OFDCookbooks Which Inspire Me To Cook -- Cookbooks I Use Lots2K5V6R13KVBSOMy Favorites - simple International Cuisine and Entertaining3RBKWIBGT9EY1Encore Entre Nous: More Advice on Becoming a "French Femme"3KXQXGV3INY70Essential Cooking Titles2F27MIT2YCZ4RAny Chef Who Claims to Not Use Cookbooks is LYING!0785245413http://www.amazon.com/Experiencing-Depths-Christ-Nelsons-Classics/dp/0785245413%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D07852454131101872http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51XX88BSKPL._SL75_.jpg7548http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51XX88BSKPL._SL160_.jpg160103http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51XX88BSKPL.jpg500322Madame GuyonHardcover282.09297807852454141190785245413EnglishEnglishEnglish9541899USD$18.99Thomas Nelson1320Book2000-11-15Thomas NelsonThomas NelsonExperiencing The Depths Of Jesus Christ Nelson's Royal Classics1336351991USD$19.910600005.028607852454135002008-08-19Must read !I was struggling to find how to live a deep christian life.
Though there are many books to talk about this issue, I'm pretty sure that this book is the right one.
the only one book i would recommend is this.
So far, as a layman christian, I read more than 200 books about many different area. discipline, church, theology, ministry, ...
However, i was shocked at this book just after reading several pages.

This is MUST READ !!!07852454135222008-04-26Practical Christian SpiritualityGuyon has given the church a spiritual gem. And this gem has been mostly hidden... hidden by years of religious junk that is void of life-changing power! She writes of what many call "the deeper Christian life" when it is truthfully... the normal Christian life. Unfortunately, it is this Christian life that most believers never mature and grow up into.

Guyon calls believers to learn a new way of prayer and a new way to read Scripture. This new way will ultimately lead us to experience the depths of Jesus Christ.

Guyon recognizes that man is tripartite or trichotomous in nature. Meaning... man is composed of spirit, soul(psyche), and body. It is in the spirit of man that we meet Christ. It is through the denial of our soul-life (i.e. will, emotions, intellect) that we learn to meet with God in the spirit. The spirit then governs the soul and body as Christ intended in divine order.

It is through abandonment and pressing through the "spiritual dryness" that we shall take hold of a deeper experience with Christ. Discerning the activity of your spirit vs. your soul... will allow you to come to Christ in the way he has placed before us. It is by turning inward to Christ that we discover his life in us.

"When your soul is once turned toward God---the God who dwells within your spirit---you will find it easy to keep turning within. The longer you continue to turn within, the closer you will come to God and the more firmly you will cling to him." p.54

Many believers are led astray by external activities of the soul for years before they ever take seriously the spiritual things spoken of in this book. This is a common occurrence... but it is not normal and it never should be accepted as an inevitable delay of Christian maturity.

Guyon writes, "If a new convert were introduced to real prayer and to a true inward experience of Christ as soon as he became converted, you would see countless numbers of converts go on to become true disciples."

She goes on to say, "the present way of deaing only with external matters in the life of the new convert brings little fruit. Burdening the new Christian with countless rules and all sorts of standards does not help him grow in Christ. Here is what should be done: The new Christian should be led to God. How? By learning to turn within to Jesus Christ and by giving the Lord his whole heart." p.117

This book is about how this happens. I have not read a more practical book about Christian living. I highly recommend this book to those who have exhausted themselves by attempting to live like Christ in the soul-life.

For more of a thorough teaching on the tripartite nature of man... please read, "The Release of the Spirit" and "The Spiritual Man, vol.1" by Watchman Nee.

I recommend the following books:
The Release of the Spirit
The Spiritual Man (3 volume set)
The Centrality of Jesus Christ (Works of T. Austin-Sparks) Volume One
The Pursuit of God: The Human Thirst for the Divine07852454135112008-01-07Guyon on prayer"Experiencing the Depths..." is one of the best books on prayer ever written. But, you need to follow her instructions to actually do chapters 1,2, & 3 before you read on. The temptation to continue reading and not doing is enormous but the result will just be confusion. Also reading her Autobiography will increase your understanding and connection with this book.

Pastor pablo alegre07852454135112007-08-13AwesomeThis book changed my life by helping me understand just how close Christ is to us who believe and seek Him. I don't ever have to be alone again and can practice the Greatest Commandment in all my life, and have complete joy in Christ. Daily Bible reading is also a must for me to help keep me turned away from the "world" and at the same time turned inward towards Christ Jesus who abides in me and in all. Praise God and Christ for new life!!!07852454134222007-06-24A bit "wordy", but true at heartThis book seemed very interesting, however I found that even when its contents were explained simply, it's almost too vague or confusing for me to comprehend what the author is suggesting. In its shortest form, this book teaches Christians that meditation is the key to remaining focused on God and staying in His holy presence. However, it uses vauge suggestions like, "Now bring your self into the Lord's presence and just hold yourself there in silence." Now, I take it as if I could already bring myself into the Lord's presence, then I probably wouldn't need this book! However, late on the book does offer a little more explanation. But the true value of this book is when it goes in to describing the difficulties one can expect to face when trying to draw closer to the Father. This section of the book (luckily a large portion of the entire text) is by far the most useful and practical and on it's merits alone I would recommend this book to all but the newest followers of Christ. (Newer followers might not understand the issues discussed without a little "practical experience" under their belt.)

Nelson's Royal Classics feature classic literature by famous Christian authors. Brother Joseph says, "Theresa is our comtemporary" and so she is. By her image of God as living and merciful she pre-dated Vatican II. After reading Brother Schmidt's, "Everything is Grace," I re-read Theresa's "Story of a Soul. Thanks to Brother Schmidt, I got much more out of the second reading of Theresa's autobiography 15932509594002008-08-01An Ordinary SaintThis book really draws the reader into the mystery of sainthood. But, it does it in such a real and simple way. Therese was real and simple. It's actually possible to see oneself in her. This was an amazing experience for me.15932509595002008-07-29Everything is GraceIn Everything Is Grace, Joe Schmidt elegantly helped me to fall in love
with Therese. Therese showed me how to walk in the heart of love. The
gifts of surrender and gratitude have become for me a daily offering.
Bearing serenely those behaviors that are displeasing to me has become
a daily challenge. Joe Schmidt helped convince me that Therese's "Little
Way" is the only way. Joe Schmidt's clarity, precision, and ease of reading were highlights for me in Everything is Grace. I continue to
highly recommend this book to others.

Review by Rita Schmitz, CSJ15932509595002008-07-26Everything Is Grace - This book is grace.I have read several books on the life of St. Therese and enjoyed them all. This one, however, is much more than the story of a sweet, young girl. This one makes real the grit and determination of a woman bent on knowing and loving Jesus within her world. She awakens my spirit to do the same. The author has shared not only the facts of Therese's life but has also shared deep insights into the life of this woman of faith.15932509595122008-07-08Everything Is GraceJoseph Schmidt, FSC has written a new and refreshingly insightful book on Therese of Lisieux, using her original and unedited documents. She becomes more accessible to us little ones and that was the intention of her Little Way.
Steven Vesely, S.T.
Secretary General
Missionary Servants of the Most Holy TrinityThérèse of Lisieux has been called the greatest saint of modern times, but some view her spirituality as sentimental and syrupy. Joseph F. Schmidt, FSC, dispels that notion by contending that Thérèse's "little way" is really the gospel message--a message that can best be understood in the context of her life. Schmidt does a masterful job of weaving together biographical details with Thérèse's profound insights on God's love and mercy. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants an introduction to Thérèse's spirituality as well as for those who desire a deeper appreciation of her "little way"--a way that continues to speak to Catholics today. Includes photographs of Thérèse as a young girl and throughout her life.0385520379Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light - The Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta0385523416Jesus of NazarethB000OYNVOYInto Great Silence (Two-Disc Set)0195307216Therese of Lisieux: God's Gentle Warrior093208589XPraying With Therese of Lisieux (Companions for the Journey)12295General12292Catholicism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12297Inspirational12292Catholicism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12304Saints12292Catholicism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12504General22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12817Inspirational12809Spirituality22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books491438Christianity468234Religious Studies468206Humanities465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712994011General AAS468234Religious Studies468206Humanities465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712982011General AAS465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR2LPKSMLR1VVZRGuide my Catholic SoulR25UMSAZJZOWLOCarmel0944993966http://www.amazon.com/Route-66-Mother-Michael-Wallis/dp/0944993966%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D09449939661900387http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KXBTTQY2L._SL75_.jpg7546http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KXBTTQY2L._SL160_.jpg16098http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KXBTTQY2L.jpg475291Audio CassetteMichael WallisMichael Martin Murphey9739780944993965Abridged740944993966EnglishEnglishEnglish7171795USD$17.95Audio Literature2Book1998-04Audio LiteratureAudio LiteratureRoute 66: The Mother Road374464700USD$47.004450USD$44.501500005.027609449939665002008-04-29Route 66: The Mother Road 75th Anniversary EditionI travelled the Mother Road in September 1960 in a 1956 Ford from Chicago to LA. We also bought The Lincoln Highway: Coast to Coast for our guide book east. Both books are a must for the adventure we are planning; a cross country trip in our 1941 Oldsmobile street rod. Here is the definitive story of the most famous road in American history. Her "Little Way" is so simple and based on love. I have personally found Story of a Soul very useful in my spiritual life. Even though she is a saint, she is very easy to relate to where ever you are in life's journey. It is a book that I certainly will be reading again as it has made such an impact on my life. Saint Therese may be called The Little Flower but after reading this you realise that she is a stirdy little flower made of steel! A lot of people can be put off her by how she is portrayed, as was I before I read about her life in her words. Also a good little book on St. Therese is 'Heart of a Soul'. This book Iam reviewing is A MUST Read.B0006W4KV2117202007-05-26The book issued by Echo Library in 2006, edited by T. Taylor, is an obsolete translation of an inauthentic version of a classicRev. Thomas Taylor's early 20th century translation of the memoir of St. Therese of Lisieux, unfortunately republished in 2006 by Echo Library, was made from the only manuscript then available outside her monastery, one substantially rewritten by Therese's sister Pauline, who made seven thousand changes. Scholars interested in the documents which gave rise to the cult of St. Therese may wish to consult early versions of Taylor. I urge those who want to read what Therese wrote to read the third edition of "Story of a Soul" translated by Fr. John Clarke, OCD, and published by ICS Publications in 1976. The Clarke translation, made from the unretouched manuscript written by Therese (an authentic manuscript published in French only in 1956), is recognized as the standard throughout the English-speaking world. No other translation compares to it. The book is enriched by an introduction, afterword, and easy-to-read notes that set Therese's manuscripts in the context of her life, and the index makes it even more useful. Whether you have not read "Story of a Soul" or have read only earlier English translations (Taylor, Knox, Beevers), the Clarke translation will open the world of Therese to you. Don't miss it. John Clarke's acclaimed translation, first published in 1975, is now accepted as the standard throughout the English-speaking world.0895553449Thoughts of St. Therese: The Little Flower of Jesus Carmelite of the Monastery of Lisieux, 1873-18970385523416Jesus of Nazareth0385520379Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light - The Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta0809143747The Little Way for Every Day: Thoughts from Therese of Lisieux0375725628Introduction to the Devout Life12304Saints12292Catholicism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books16009741Specific Congregations & Orders16009721Congregations & Orders12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books173165Therese of Lisieux297891( T )297871Authors, A-Z22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books0385029039http://www.amazon.com/Autobiography-Saint-Therese-Lisieux-Story/dp/0385029039%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D038502903915623http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4162DF21AAL._SL75_.jpg7549http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4162DF21AAL._SL160_.jpg160105http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4162DF21AAL.jpg475313PaperbackJohn Beevers282.0929780385029032530385029039EnglishEnglishEnglish8221095USD$10.95Image1192Book1987-12-17Image1987-11-17ImageThe Autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux: The Story of a Soul49554400USD$4.00405USD$4.0527380011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewqQdOpuwsf7wPFVWEsMOOlRpzUo4riOGmC2NZRwrf0raowKomVkl34Dx3maa1%2FmT6UKjkZ4VxLrMGHTV6oVQymw%3D%3D876USD$8.76Usually ships in 24 hours5.026603850290395222007-08-09Great BookReally enjoyed reading this book. As we begin the book she actually seems to be spoiled by her family. Her parents were financially secure and devoutly religious. Therese knew she wanted to be a nun from the age of three. She had bouts of poor health and she suffered the loss of her mother early in her life. And then the sisters she relied on left one by one to join the convent. But she also had security and love from her family. She also had an incredible sense of self-direction.

In her book Saint Therese describes souls as similar to different types of flowers. Some are roses, others lilies, and some like orchids, for example. And all can be equally pleasing to God in their own way, when seeking his role for them. People have different talents and different struggles, but these characteristics do not mean that any type is more valued than the other.

Saint Therese describes the Christian Church as one body, and how she wants to be the heart that loves. She writes frequently of the many ways that God is love. She believed that heaven for her would be to be able to help people on earth after she died. She writes that any sacrifice in daily life can be offered to God, for the conversion of souls, or help of others, whether it is the suffering of an illness or loss, or the performance of a mundane daily chore. Therese also writes much she preferred to speak directly to God as a child when she prayed instead of using formal liturgy.
0385029039510102005-09-25"Story of a Soul" has Many Lessons to Offer"Story of a Soul" is a collection of three manuscripts written by Therese of Lisieux near the end of her very brief life. Therese lived in France at the end of the 19th century and spent nine of her twenty-four years in a Carmelite cloister, yet this simple woman and her "little way" have touched millions of lives in the years since her death.

Therese lived and preached a spirituality based on the scripture passages that urge becoming like a little child, living a life of trust in God. While she never did anything the world might consider "great", she made the most of the opportunities presented to her. She took advantage of offering to God little sacrifices such as sitting straight in a chair without resting her back and going out of her way to be kind to a fellow sister she did not particularly care for.

From her earliest years, she had an intimate relationship with Jesus. Although she was very close to her family, She writes, "I knew how to speak only to [Jesus]; conversations with creatures, even pious conversations, fatigued my soul." In her final year, as she was dying from tuberculosis, she welcomed her suffering even as she experienced a crisis of faith which plunged her into a dark night of the soul.

The three manuscripts that comprise "Story of a Soul" each have a different tone due to the fact that they were addressed to three different people in response to three distinct requests. Manuscript "A" is addressed to Therese's sister Pauline, also known as Mother Agnes. She was a Carmelite nun as well and at the time was the Prioress of the convent. Mother Agnes had asked her to put down on paper her recollections from her childhood. It was intended as a "family souvenir" and as a result has a very familiar, sentimental tone. In it, Therese tells the story of her life from her earliest remembrances through her profession as a Carmelite.

Manuscript "B" was directed to another of Therese's elder sisters, Marie, who also resided at the Carmel cloister. Sister Marie of the Sacred Heart later recalled that "I asked her myself during her last retreat (September, 1896) to put in writing her little doctrine as I called it." The shortest of the three manuscripts, it contains the heart of Therese's insights. It consists of a letter to her sister in which she explains that "Jesus does not demand great actions from us but simply surrender and gratitude," and a love letter to Jesus in which she confides her desire to be "the warrior, the priest, the apostle, the doctor, the martyr." Using the metaphor that St. Paul established in 1 Corinthians 12 of the body of Christ with its many parts, Therese comes to the conclusion that in order to fulfill her desire to be all things she must be love. "I shall be love. Thus I shall be everything, and thus my dream will be realized."

In Manuscript "C", Therese returns to the story of her life, this time at the request of Mother Marie de Gonzague who had taken over as Prioress. It tells of her remaining years at Carmel up to three months before her death in 1897 when she no longer had the energy to write. In her final words she exclaims "I go to Him with confidence and love . . ."

Therese never intended any of these words for publication, yet in the last months of her life she seemed to have had a premonition that her words would eventually do much good in the world. "Story of a Soul" provides a blueprint for a life lived in relationship with Christ. Therese comes across as extremely human, struggling with life as all of us do, yet she had such trust and faith. We are wise to learn from her example.
[...]A spiritual guide for millions the world over, this is the autobiography of a holy woman who "attained to the knowledge of supernatural things in such abundant measure that she was able to point out the sure way of salvation to others." --Pope Pius XI0486426939Dark Night of the Soul0385523416Jesus of Nazareth0385520379Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light - The Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta0156010860The Seven Storey Mountain0375725628Introduction to the Devout Life2375General2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books4978Spain4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books69893General4952France4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books12304Saints12292Catholicism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12339Faith12333Christian Living12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12352Catholic12350Church History12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12504General22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books173165Therese of Lisieux297891( T )297871Authors, A-Z22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR2MY13JURZUC7CA Few of My Favorite Catholic ThingsRRB30T8EDWEQ1Great Stories of Catholic Priests & Religious of Our TimeR2UI3LG0EZ1QQHBooks That Never Grow StaleBFO2K32U8F0AThe 33 "Doctors of the Church" in Alphabetical Order3SJUT4OLGAGYVAbout the Saints2Y4ORFD9KLE2MEssential Library for Catholics & Converts1X64HM9ECLEXJGood catholic books17KSMAFIF64MUBooks that changed my mind2Z6YLCCPHFC59Good Catholic Reading37C3HK6JFG01CHeroes of LoveB000FC0QTIhttp://www.amazon.com/Last-Great-Dance-Earth/dp/B000FC0QTI%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000FC0QTI6425http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YJyXC986L._SL75_.jpg7549http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YJyXC986L._SL160_.jpg160105http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YJyXC986L.jpg304200Sandra GullandKindle Edition813.54Kindle BookEnglish1199USD$11.99Scribner1384eBooks2004-01-07Scribner2004-01-07ScribnerThe Last Great Dance on Earth959USD$9.59100011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnew%2BFk6HfFfwDICfdVhtuPxKHu09HX1nRcWW7vaCaIV%2BpZqP1d%2FBp1NykzhLOEqQb3WYCeE8SzogeQJ%2BCUQYTLq4w%3D%3D959USD$9.59Usually ships in 24 hours5.0266B000FC0QTI5002008-07-01the josephine b trilogy by sandra gullandi found all three books in this trilogy fascinating. it was a painless way to learn about the french revolution, napolean and josephine's lives, and a multitude of other historical facts. the books moved very quickly and from the time i picked up the first one i was hooked!B000FC0QTI5002007-02-11Superb FinaleI don't need to repeat what eveyone else seems to be stating in their reviews of this book and the entire Josephine trilogy; the story flows from start to finish.

I very highly recommend this book!B000FC0QTI5112006-07-11ExcellentA perfect ending to a wonderful trilogy. Gulland has clearly done her research and France comes alive through the eyes of Josephine Bonaparte. Compassionate, kind and well-loved in France, Josephine also gives us a very intimate and sympathetic insight to Napoleon Bonaparte. I enjoyed this whole series and would heartily recommend it to anyone interested in the French Revolution, the French Republic and the rise of Napoleon. It is engrossing, humorous and heart-rending. Highly recommended.B000FC0QTI5772006-06-22Well Done Sandra Gulland--An Outstanding Conclusion!!!I can't express how much I loved this wonderful novel. The most accurate adjective I can think of would be 'interesting'. This book was soooo interesting. Gulland's attention to detail is absolutely meticulous. She used over 400 sources in the writing of this trilogy. I learned so much--not only about Napoleon and Josephine, but also of other historical figures of that time. I also found the daily life of the aristocracy not only fascinating but also exhausting.

Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine Beauharnais are some of the most intriguing characters in history. Their story is so compelling and Gulland does a wonderful job of presenting it. Her 'Josephine' trilogy tells the story of Marie-Josephe-Rose Tascher (Beauharnais Bonaparte) who was born on the French Caribbean island of Martinique in 1763. She died, as she was still known, as the Empress Josephine at her beloved Malmaison in Paris in 1814. THE LAST GREAT DANCE ON EARTH begins in March 1800 at the Tuileries Palace in Paris and ends at her death. But, Gulland has a special treat for her readers. She ties up all the loose ends by telling us what happens to all the characters in her novel. I loved that! In fact, I was taking a tour a couple of weeks ago in St. Augustine, Florida and the guide told us that this is where Napoleon Bonaparte's brother came to....I now know that it was Jerome. The author also has a chronology with detailed accounts and dates of events in the last fourteen years of Josephine's life. Gulland also used actual letters of the pair in this book. And again, the pages are peppered with footnotes that add credence to this story.

In book three we're treated to more of the deep and abiding friendship of Josephine and Napoleon. The love they had for each other is legendary. Napoleon was a wonderful father to Hortense and Eugene and they also adored him. But Josephine had to put up with her horrid in-laws, their jealousy and constant designs of destroying her marriage, their lies and the constant undermining--geesh, she was more patient than I could have been. They eventually succeeded. Despite going through horrible and archaic treatments for infertility, Josephine could not conceive. As we all know, Napoleon divorced her in order to gain an heir. Even then, they continued their friendship and love.

I have been mesmerized with Napoleon and Josephine since visiting the Lourve for the first time as a college freshman and falling in love with David's "The Coronation of Napoleon." Then, after visiting the famous, albeit headless statue of the former Empress at her birthplace in Martinique, my curiosity became insatiable. We learned that Josephine's head was cut off because she influenced her husband to reinstate slavery. I was hoping to read an explanation in these novels but it was never mentioned (although Martinico is mentioned quite often). Which comes to another point: Gulland mentions that researching the lives of Napoleon and Josephine is addictive; I've already bought two more books, maybe I'll find the answer to my question! B000FC0QTI5332003-06-15Don't forget the rest of the trilogyWhile this book stands out on it's own merits, you would be doing yourself a huge disservice if you didn't read the first two books in the trilogy first ('The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B.' and 'Tales of Passion, Tales of Woe'). This is probably my favorite group of books and everyone I have let borrow them feels the same. All are well-written and easy reading (as well as interesting history). I am only sorry that Sandra Gulland hasn't written any other books...yet. I keep hoping. The Last Great Dance on Earth is the triumphant final volume of Sandra Gulland's beloved trilogy based on the life of Josephine Bonaparte. When the novel opens, Josephine and Napoleon have been married for four tumultuous years. Napoleon is Josephine's great love, and she his. But their passionate union is troubled from within, as Josephine is unable to produce an heir, and from without, as England makes war against France and Napoleon's Corsican clan makes war against his wife. Through Josephine's heartfelt diary entries, we witness the personal betrayals and political intrigues that will finally drive them apart, culminating in Josephine's greatest tragedy: her divorce from Napoleon and his exile to Elba.
