Great follow up to Verta Cooks in the America's KitchenReview Date: 2007-04-07
In the series and these books she highlights South Carolina low country cooking from her childhood and dishes she discovered on her travels. I would label it African Diaspora cooking; she has recopies from many cultural backgrounds including Caribbean, Portuguese, Spanish; all the cuisines that influenced the New World. She is a food historian and great at painting a picture of the history, culture and folklore of food.
I have made several recopies from both books and never had one turn out badly; she knows how to write a recipe and give you a sense of flavor and a context for the dish you are preparing. There are several dishes in both books that my children love to eat, my mother-in-law is always impressed when I make one of her dishes.
This is a great cookbook and I hope the food network calls her up now.
CALLING ALL COOKS!Review Date: 2001-06-26
Vertamae Cooks Again is full of recipes from all over the Americas, with an emphasis on Mexican cuisine. No tacos or enchiladas here folks -- try my favorite - tres leches cake. Or give the ribs called "table cloth stainers" a try.
Besides being a great cook, Vertamae is a food anthropologist. Most of the recipes in both books are accompanied by historical information that gives you a feel for the culture. Her recipes are always clearly written and unique. And her books include listings of stores that carry some of the hard-to-find ingredients.
Check out the PBS series Vertamae Cooks in the Americas Family Kitchen, then buy both books and try the recipes. You'll hope that Vertamae cooks again and again and again...

Women in Latin American LiteratureReview Date: 2002-04-09
I was very pleased with this book, because it gave a variety of works - poems, short stories, and theatrical pieces. These varied widely in style and content. Further, the authors are not all from the same time period. Perhaps the only common thread is that they are Latin American women authors.
The editor provides historical backgrounds which give some insight into the time frame and life history of the authors, and although these do vary in detail and objectivity, they were useful.
I highly reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in Latin American literature, feminist literature, or both.

ClassicReview Date: 2006-01-12
This is the best book that I've read in the last 10 years.
Politics , social commentary , religion , it's all in here.
Set in Trinidad , Wine... follows a church leader , his family
and their surrounding community , as they grapple with a wide
array of social ills. Beyond a good book. This one's a classic.

Great guideReview Date: 2003-07-26
These books are just about the same as having local knowledge. You can stare at a chart forever, but you won't get the detail that you find in these hand drawn maps and local nav knowledge that you can use.
As with all of these guides, they only show you the anchorages that MOST people go to. There are many others that you have to be a chart wiz to figure out (and I'm not going to tell....).

Zombie Curse inspirational to those who want to make a difference...Review Date: 2008-05-02
I'm grateful for this true story of a courageous man who shows us all how one person can make a difference, if we only will wake up to our opportunities. Initially I checked out The Zombie Curse: A Doctor's 25-year Journey into the Heart of the AIDS Epidemic in Haiti from our local library as I was preparing to go on a five-day humanitarian trip to Haiti with some students and a professor to install a water purification system at an orphanage. I liked this true story of Dr. Arthur M. Fournier's work with Haitians so much that I bought six copies, one for each of us who went to Haiti, to inspire us to perhaps one day return to our Haitian friends and do more that we have already done to help them improve their quality of life.
Yes, there is much need in places like Haiti. As we choose to start someplace as Americans who care about helping others, especially children, to get their basic life needs met, we will find that we are awakened from the Zombie Curse that has afflicted too many of us up to now. I've been asleep for the most part, too. By small things are great things brought to pass. If we can but throw back into the nourishing sea but one star fish ... it will matter to at least that one, and to those who come after that one!
Part one of the book, The Curse Descends, covers Dr. Fournier's work in Florida with Haitians back when AIDS was just being recognized. Part two, Secrets Revealed, goes into depth about the work Dr. Fournier has done in Haiti itself over the past 25¬+ years. His compassionate willingness to get involved and to open doors for hard-working Haitians who have vision for their country, and his ongoing mentoring of medical students who want to learn and help, makes this book a must-read if you, too, feel you want to understand how you can make a difference in one corner of this vineyard we call planet earth.
