"Suez to Singapore" by Cecil Brown, ©1942(?)
Gentlemen, start the war!
What a story. Mr. Brown gives you the feeling that you are there. In the first few pages, he is running from the Nazis, captured by them and sees the horror of war up close and personal. He communicates all the saddness and feeling of injustice for the Yugoslavs, etc.
He travels to Cairo, through Turkey, Syria and Palestine, and that is another tale of wonder and exasperation at the bungling of the British. He is a radio reporter, newly accredited to report the war in 1941 for CBS, and he is in the thick of it. But there are the British censors to work through. His battles with trying to get the true story out is the basis for this book, as well as the general story of the war from where he is.
My enjoyment of this book is based on the value of personal experience and perception that he tells about. When the 'Repulse ' is sinking, he lets you know that he was scared and at a loss for what to do. He also tells about the deaths from miscalculation that he witnessed (He jumped from the smokstack and hit the side of the ship, not the water, and broke every bone in his body.) He talks about the places he goes, and the people he meets so well, you feel awed or happy or sad as the occasion presents itself.
The title of the book is a bit deceptive. It takes only about twenty pages to go from Cairo to Singapore, the rest of the book is about the war fought in the Western Desert, the development of the war in Singapore and his travel to Australia and on home to America. His last sentence, "Have you ever wanted to fall on your knees and kiss this American earth?" sums up the passion of his writing.

I feel that she did very well in portraying the lives ofSingaporeans, as a caucasion married to a Chinese Singaporean. She isable to understand about the lifestyle of Singporeans and thus wrote this book. The short stories are able to tell the reader what she wants to tell them. "Short & Sweet" E-mail to me too, anytime. I'm from The Chinese High School in S'pore, and Mrs. Jenny Gay visited our school when I was in Secondary One, now I'm Sec 2.

I purchased this excellent book when I visited Singapore this past summer, and I was most impressed with Joe's superb art work. This full-color heavily illustrated graphic novel presents the history of Singapore in a most unique style. The caricatures of the various political leaders were also very well captured by Joe Yeoh. This is probably one of the best graphic novels about Singapore that I have read. Keep up the great work, Joe! I look forward to reading your next book.

Quoting from the back cover:
"November 1944: Germany is losing World War II. In a last, desperate attempt to turn the tide, German High Command sends a U-boat loaded with the latest in weapons technology and uranium to meet with the Japanese in the Philippine Sea. U-1706 also carries highly sensitive documents.
"November 2004: High in the mountains of the Black Forest at the Freiberg Institute, two young scientists make a revolutionary breakthrough during a routine experiment. Instead of a test cube, they transport an entire submarine from the past to the future.
"Stranded in the 21st century, U-1706 with all its crew is soon sighted in Southeast Asia, drawing the attention of American Intelligence. The two German scientists must race U.S. operatives to find the boat and make contact, to prevent the worst."
If you like Sci-Fi and suspenseful submarine stories, you will most certainly enjoy this novel. Rene Egle is a consummate writer who uses his smooth flowing, delightful style to weave this multi-faceted adventure to a satisfactory conclusion. U-1706 is well written and well edited and considering the depth, complexity and intrigue, it is definitely worth the price.

A Mesmerizing Resource for Exploring Asian-American Cultural Influences

Review Date: 2008-02-07
I discovered this fascinating book in a Singapore museum bookstore and immediately bought a copy, after flipping through its pages. As a journalist, for decades, I've carefully observed the shifting winds of global culture -- sometimes toward the U.S. and sometimes toward other lands.
"Vintage Singapore" is vividly illustrated with 20th-century images and artifacts from the National Museum of Singapore, mainly exploring cultural influences from the 1950s to the 1970s. In the 1950s, Singapore still was struggling to recover from Japanese occupation in World War II. By the 1970s, Singapore was an independent island-nation, trying to define its own identity in the world.
Teachers and students of media, cross-cultural issues, anthropology, popular culture -- and international relations -- will find the book intriguing. Even if you're not directly engaged in research or education, the book is simply cool to explore -- filled with vintage images of toys, fashions, movie memorabilia and a host of other consumer products.
Thanks to the Singapore museum for sharing such a colorful slice of their 20th-century collections with the larger world!
