Being a frequent flyer, I like to read books relating to the airline industry. This book was a real page-turner. From the
opening scene of an FBI agent being used as chum to the blending of the story of the loss of the Panama Canal, fanatical drug
dealers, government officials trying to cover their butts and creative, frighteningly easy airline sabotage. I don't want
to give away the action scenes, but I have say, there is a really incredible commercial airline scene. Rudy will repulse you,
Nestor will frighten you, you will be certain of Chris and Zac's demise and you will despise George Drany. While reading,
I couldn't help but picture Benjamin Bratt as Zac and Charlize Theron as Chris, John Travolta as the egocentric George Draney,
Dennis Franz as Rudy and without a doubt, Johnny Depp as Nestor Avila. Now that you have the visual imagery background for
the characters, go read the book!

*China Chic* is a gorgeous yet scholarly study of the interchange between China and the West in terms of fashion. Among the
many intriguing points is how women of Chinese ancestry in the West are now influencing fashion design in new, very sophisticated
ways. The combined efforts of Valerie Steele, John Major, and others make this book a must-read, just as the exhibit at
the Fashion Institute in spring 1999 that this book used as a basis was a must-see for anyone who cares about fashion, culture
and dress, or Chinese history.

Larry Weirather's excellent book about the cultural impact of the China Clipper is a great read. If you're a Clipper enthusiast
or interested in popular culture you will enjoy this thoroughly researched book. I was amazed that Weirather could trace
back many of what we think of as cultural norms to the era of the Great Flying Boats. The Clipper pilots were analogous to
the astronauts of today. Their exploits helped lift American out of the malaise of the Great Depression. A must have book
for the serious Clipper buff.

I've ready a lot of mediocre books on the subject over the years, but this is a keeper. Well-organized, nicely woven themes.

When my husband and I began the process of adopting a baby from China, my mother gave us this book. We loved the story of
Bronson and Georgine and their search for God, love, and a child. Barbara Jean Hicks has thoroughly researched the Chinese
adoption process, and her facts are accurate. Her honesty about the situation of many women and baby girls in China is very
touching. The story is more than an inspirational romance; it is a realistic look at Chinese culture, infertility issues,
relationship with God, and what it means to be a family. ---Meredith

Since I was a teenager, I have wanted to adopt. Then, when I went to China as a missionary. Many of my friends worked in the
#1 orphanage of the city - a discouraging and sad place. My friends told me stories of children, usually girls, disappearing
from the orphanages - the rumour was that they had been thrown over a cliff. I avoided the place like a plague until I was
"forced" to go, leading a group of visiting students. My heart was broken by two little ones - a toddling girl, and a premature
boy. The little girl, about 2, was all smiles & cuddles. The boy, actually a year old, was the size of a newborn. I held him
the entire time I was there. Barbara Jean Hicks has expressed an enormous need through a creatively wonderful tale of seeking
God's will in our lives. I hope you will all join me in thanking her and praying that God might use our lives to save just
one little one.

I was originally attracted by the title of the book, but when I browsed through the first chapter a couple of years ago, I
became skeptical of its structure, which seemed to be a Procrustes' bed. How could one fit such a broad subject in such a
nice way? Recently I started to read it more carefully, because I planned to write on the same subject. I cannot put this
book down. I have not been impressed by an author's erudition, originality, insights, and wisdom for a long time. Among numerous
experts, I count Adshead among a mere handful of masters. This book has a huge impact on me. On the one hand, it will make
it difficult for me to come up with better things to say; on the other, it will guide my research and inspire my interests.
No doubt, I will quote him in the future. I had never written a review on the Amazon, but when I realized that he is an emeritus
professor, I thought that I would be remiss if I did not express my appreciation for his work. Thank you, Prof. Adshead!

in one of the most succinctly argued books I've ever read. You'll find one or two jaw-dropping insights on every page.

This book provides an fairly indepth account of dynastic expansion. The Qing retained the instincts of steppe cavalry for
almost 150 years and their expansion into Central Asia showed their determination to prevent a rival steppe empire rising
on their flanks. Their efforts were opposite to the Ming who spent relatively little time on the steppes, which allowed Manchu
rivalry.I enjoy this book very much and impressed with the illustrations.

E. B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed" is by common consent one of the finest -- if not the finest -- account of the life of
a combat infantryman in World War II. At Pelieu and Okinawa, Sledge was one of only 10 men in his Marine company of 240 to
escape being wounded or killed. "China Marine" is the follow-up to "With the Old Breed," a lesser work but one that tells
of what happened to Sledge after the war.
With Sledge's experience, one would have thought that he would have been among the first among the military to be demobilized after the end of the war with Japan -- but no, he and his colleagues were sent to China to disarm the Japanese soldiers there and to maintain order in several northern Chinese cities. This is Sledge's account of the six months he spent in China. His view is that of a Private First Class -- but an educated and sophisticated PFC, the son of a medical doctor from Mobile, Alabama, and an outstanding writer. He delighted in Peking, fresh food, a clean bunk, light duties, and friendship with the sophisticated Soong family -- but the danger from attack by communist armies was always there.
Sledge goes on to tell of the trauma of his discharge from the Marines and homecoming to Mobile and, very briefly, his long years of struggle with what we call today Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's a brief book, only 160 pages, and am interesting, beautifully written, account of the decompression of a combat soldier and his return home.
Sledge died in 2001 but he was often quoted in Ken Burn's recent PBS series on World War II. Sledge is a true American hero.

This book is at the cutting-edge of today's modern Chinese interior design. The selection of the featured projects covers
a wide range of style. Generally speaking, the majority of these projects are great works (except for one HK house). I have
personally been to several of the places featured in this book. The text and the pictures captured the beauty of these places
and provided rich information about the cultural values behind decoration and designing. Simply put, this is a high quality
book. I can feel that the authors are really serious about the content and have done a lot of research. If you like Chinese
style and modern decoration, this is definitely an excellent source.
