Michigan Flora, Vol. 2: Dicots

Excellent addition to a naturalist's set of tools

Voss's three-volume set of Michigan Flora is perhaps not the easiest thing to lug around a field site, but it is invaluable for its detailed information about each species. If you can identify a plant's family, the family keys are good and the book gives maps showing the distribution of each species in Michigan. Descriptions of the plants' preferred habitat help you narrow the possibilities when working on an identification. If you live in Michigan, these books are perfect, but if you live in neighboring areas--Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ontario, and probably elsewhere, you will find considerable overlap with your local flora. The only disadvantage is having to shuffle among the three volumes (get all three), but they are all priced so reasonably, and they are so thorough, it is worth it.

Good book - at least for the beginning gardener
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.

I borrowed this book from the library, and did not get to look through it extensively, but I am a beginning gardener and would definitely like to add this book to my home library to have on hand as a reference. I liked the fact that the book is broken into sections by annuals, perrenials, shrubs, etc. Also, I think every plant mentioned includes a full color picture. That was a high point for me as I am just becoming familiar with many of these specimens. I wish I could give a more thorough review, but at first glance I was very happy with the content of this book.

This thick guide book itself gave me insight into what I had found already, with it's explanations of laws of inheritance. With relevant web addresses and even support on the author's website, this was well worth the money.

This Directory was published by the Michigan Holistic Health Association at a time when alternative health care was little known and difficult to locate. There were three editions, 1982,1984, and 1986. The phenomeNEWS has produced subsequent editions.

Directory editor Dan Butts has recently published "How Corporations Hurt Us All: Saving our Rights, Democracy, Institutions and Our Future", Trafford Publications, 2003. It includes a chapter on the conditions of both general and alternative health care.

While doing research for our local VFW, my husband found the following books quite helpful in getting information regarding prisoners of war, Michigan's involvement in the war, and the Michigan Sharpshooters (Indian). There were many more books involved, but this could turn into a very long review. The Civil War: Strange & Fascinating FactsGreat Maps of the Civil War: Pivotal Battles and Campaigns Featuring 32 Removable Maps (Museum in a Book, 2)Sharpshooters of the American Civil War 1861-65 (Warrior)Mary Chesnut's Civil WarLife and Death in Civil War Prisons: The Parallel Torments of Corporal John Wesly Minnich, C.S.A. and Sergeant Warren Lee Goss, U.S.A.Life and Death in Civil War Prisons: The Parallel [[ASIN:1426461704 The American Indian as Participant in the Civil WarPortals to Hell: The Military Prisons of the Civil WarTorments of Corporal John Wesly Minnich, C.S.A. and Sergeant Warren Lee Goss, U.S.A.]]He was very pleased with the information gleaned from these books.

It's a good book to look at. There are quite a few paragraphs of information also. This book is not for finding lights.
John Penrod has done photos for postcards, calendars, books, and
even placemats. I own several of these items.

Excellent primer on Michigan media law for journalists
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-30
With the constant change in media law this is an excellent book for both students and working journalists. The book offers an excellent overview of current law and helps the non-lawyer understand what can be a complicated topic. With more legal decisions and legislation affecting the work of media, this is an excellent book to have in the newsroom, as well for use in the classroom. The authors are some of the best in business and known throughout Michigan and the country in news media circles.

The author is obviously a lover of the movie theatre of days past. Will we see their like again? Like him, I grew up in Michigan when these theatres (like him, I'll use the spelling used in their heyday) were still around. Fortunately, some few still are.
