Sam Fuller's Best WorkReview Date: 2005-02-03
A monumental acheivementReview Date: 2004-09-29
Fuller's style is profane, anecdotal, street wise and hugely engaging. It's no wonder, since he was the young protege and buddy of hard-boiled writers like Gene Fowler and Damon Runyon.
Fuller's account of his "dogface" years as a G.I. in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany is one of the best descriptions of WWII Army life I've read.
Later, Hollywood studios offered him big money to make their blockbusters ("The Longest Day," "Patton"), but he turned them down so he could make little movies his own way. ("I make A movies on B budgets," he liked to say.)
Out of curiosity,I recently rented a couple of his movies. "Pickup on South Street," with Richard Widmark and Jean Peters, just crackled. "Shock Corridor," with Peter Breck, was ambitious but flawed.
Though I can't wait to see some of his other films, my hunch is "A Third Face" will stand as Fuller's single greatest artistic achievement.
In later years, Fuller became mentor to many young directors: Jonathan Demme; Tim Robbins; Jim Jarmusch, Martin Scorsese. It's clear from Scorsese's introduction that they idolized him.
As a writer, Sam Fuller teaches this lesson: Write fast; never give up; to hell with the naysayers. His final two or three paragraphs offers a capstone philosophy that all should embrace.
I loved this book. It saddens me to finish it.

A Third FaceReview Date: 2005-09-19
As does his autobiography `A Third Face,' written with wife Christa at the end of a long and event filled life, even those who find Fuller's film a little too energetic will find this book interesting. Starting out in New York City, where he found working as a copy boy and reporter on Park Row more interesting than the high school he'd abandon without graduation, to his service in the 1st U.S. Infantry Division (the Big Red One) in World War Two, through to his post-war career as a screen writer and film director, Fuller is never boring.
With the possible exception of `The Big Red One' (1980), a film that he'd nursed for years, Fuller's career peaked in the mid-60s with independent productions like `Shock Corridor' and `The Naked Kiss.' Although Fuller claims he was offered both `The Longest Day' ("My own vision of war and the world made me say no") and `Patton' ("After my war experiences, I didn't have the necessary detachment to do a picture celebrating the man"), it's as intriguing to contemplate how he might have directed these films as it is to wonder how serious were the offers. After all, as he admits, he `was prone to excess' and loved to grab the audience and shake them. Not necessarily what you look for in a big picture director. The third face, to Fuller, is the inner person that nobody else sees. "My third face was my own holy sanctuary... It was a storage room that nobody but me could enter... It wasn't just a concept for me but a very real locale, captivating and whimsical, cozy and seductive, the geisha girl of my brain." A Third Face is captivating and whimsical, cozy and seductive, too. A strong recommendation for this one.

Randy Vogel, READ THIS BOOK!!!!!Review Date: 2006-10-27
Each climb is photographed in color with a graphic overlay clearly showing the route. Most of these routes are short, single pitch climbs that encompass a wide variety of problems with the emphasis on classic crack climbs. Approach info and the maximum protection requirement is noted along with a very abreviated strategy for the climb. Information on lodging and camping along with dining options are covered pretty well, though the surrounding areas offer a lot more variety than the book indicates.
If you're a beginner/intermediate climber and aspire to climb in JT, this is the guide to get.
Hands down the best 'Select' climbing book I've ever seenReview Date: 2006-04-25
- Full color photos of the routes
- Both approach photos as well as close up route photos, making it easy to find the rock and specific route
- Full park map with relative camping and route locations listed
- Very good beta on each and every route (includes sun/shade, rack suggestions, etc), usually about a page per route not including another page for photos.
So basically if you're interested in the 5.5 to 5.9 trad routes in Joshua Tree you'll love this book, simple as that.

11:59:59 Rememberances of Deliverance at The Very Last Moment Has DeliveredReview Date: 2006-03-05
5 Star Review of 11:59:59 Miraculous Deliverances At The Very Last Moment by Vida M. Gaynor
One of the most captivating and thought provoking autobiographical memoirs of all time, 11:59:59, Miraculous Deliverances at the Very Last Moment by Vida M. Gaynor, powerfully keeps the disciplined reader engaged as her poignant, and heartfelt messages of real-life experiences are captured all in one book. It is a 429 page book that even the busiest soul will stop to read for the sake of slowing down to find true meaning and purpose in one's life. In fact, 11:59:59 may be the only book on the market with this ability to make the world stop and listen indeed, before the very last moment.
Vida has created a masterful memoir of overcoming past struggles many readers will be able to relate to. Vida holds nothing back. She's honest, compassionate and thorough about accounting for all phases of her life.
Her words strengthen the reader's soul as she expresses her reasoning and decisions upon facing humility, loss of her home, racism, relationship troubles, and the kind of obstacles that can destroy the average soul. Life is not perfect, and no one ever knows what hand they will be dealt. Vida is not only able to boldly defy negativity despite her fears, but captures and documents a historical era as she overcomes many of life's trials and tribulations one-by-one, a true rarity.
However, one obstacle knocks on her door that she did not ask for, the biggest of all, as her son becomes inflicted with A.I.D.S. and almost turns her world upside down for good making all of her past situations irrelevant and small. It is something that it hitting closer and closer to home, and only stories such as 11:59:59 can shed light on due to society's inability to take responsibility to document its wrath.
It is something that one out of every 10th mother in the United States will face by 2020, and although no one wants their child to be stricken with.
Vida's story will force every parent to take responsibility to educate all youth, ask questions, get involved to stop a massive silent killer, and most of all keep the faith.
Vida Gaynor is a remarkable and gifted writer at 72 years of age who has entered the literary world with unconditional love. Her message is more powerful than Dianetics. Her story is not scientific, measured with quantities and statistics, but a true-to-life account that is so powerfully moving, it will uplift the reader to re-examine one's life, and never take it for granted.
Vida Gaynor's memoir is more than miraculous. It delivers with 5 star appeal, and is one of the TOP BOOKS of the year, well written, and a must read. You simply have not read a memoir until you've read Vida M. Gaynor's work. POWERFUL, MOVING, & UPLIFTING!
One Second BeforeReview Date: 2004-06-27
From abandonment by her father to the emotional shut down of her marriage, Ms. Gaynor learned at a young age that life was not always fair, and the ones closest often disappoint us the most. She overcame every obstacle thrown in her path, and when a door shut in her face with seemingly no where else to turn, God would always open a window. She called these constant occurences in her life miracles. Gaynor's connection with the spirit realm was evident even at a young age, and her curiosity and thirst for knowledge of the unknown only strengthened this bond. She believed in numerology, astrology, reincarnation or past lives, and the "knowing and seeing" beyond the physical world. Ms. Gaynor's unwavering belief in the power of God within us that sustains and protects, bringing an inner sense of joy and peace no matter the outside circumstances, took precedence over any metaphysics.
Her personal memoirs also gives us a glimpse behind the scenes of the turbulent Civil Rights Movement. Furthermore, Ms. Gaynor shares with us some of her personal relationships with the movement's most prominent icons, such as Malcolm X, Betty Shabazz, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She also was an active member of the Congress of Racial Equality's (CORE) and Black Women Enraged (BWE), which protested the Vietnam War. Ms. Gaynor's destiny also took her half way across the world to East Africa, where she became the country's first female accountant. When she had nothing left to do there, she returned home to the United States. At the age of 50, she entered graduate school. When most people her age are retiring and settling down, she was just getting started! Amazing!
11:59:59 is not just another autobiography, but a look into one woman's life who made a difference. After reading this book, I came away with a renewed understanding that everything we need-in spite of our circumstances, fears, or obstacles-is within us and with us every step we take in life. Just hold on to even the very last second, and your deliverance will come.

I wouldn't live here, but this visit is worth it!Review Date: 2006-07-06
This is still not quite as good as the similar volume for Chicago ore even less good than the volume on London, or even as good as a competitor's work on Boston, but it is good, nonetheless, if only because it confirms my notion that LA is a sprawl with no center. The 'downtown' pic looks like a non-descript snap of outer Queens and not similar to Manhatten's financial district or midtown, to which it is comparable in function. Even the shorelines look more interesting than the similar scenes from the SF book.
An excellent souvenoir!

Mental pictures.
Yes, there are those who state Los Angeles County is an area with few landmarks. First you've got have a good disposition to this place, and second you've got to get close. Cameron's shots provide plenty of pockets of beauty and character, and plenty of quintessential "LA" landmarks. One must close enough to observe and experience them. "Above Los Angeles" lets us. Photos that highlight the interesting and beautiful icons of this city's architecture and natural character.
Another book for LA-philes and those interested in its' history and growth is: "LA Lost & Found: An Architectural History of Los Angeles (California Architecture and Architects, No 21)." by Sam Hall Kaplan, and Julius Shulman (Photographer).

A guide to what business-to-business customers want from salespeople Review Date: 2007-09-24
Mandatory Reading for Sales ProfessionalsReview Date: 2007-04-25
Not since Neil Rackham wrote SPIN Selling (in 1987) and Major Account Sales Strategy (in 1988), has anyone used sophisticated research methodology to explain what makes some salespeople much more successful than others (in this case, Chally used 210,000 salespeople and 80,000 customers). Most important, Stevens and the Chally Group actually correlated what a customer said on a survey with their actual buying decisions, therefore, making the information much, much more valid and useful in determining what customer want and expect from salespeople.
The seven rules are:
1. You Must Be Personally Accountable for Our Desired Results
2. You Must Understand Our Business
3. You Must Be on Our Side
4. You Must Bring Us Applications
5. You Must be Easily Accessible
6. You Must Solve Our Problems
7. You Must Be Innovative in Responding to Our Needs
This is a book I wish I had written. It is--bar none--the most important work published in the field of sales in the last 20 years. If you choose not to buy and read this book, I promise you will quickly fall behind those of your competitors who do--it is that important! This book will reshape how you think of yourself as a salesperson, and, if Steven's advice is followed, to greatly improve how we are viewed by our customers.

I generally like the previous edition more because it was what I learned with. There is less color and it goes straight to the point. I have only skimmed through this book. Other than that, its a good book to learn about automotive technology.
If you really want to learn, go through each chapter throughly and do the review and questions. (and of course, do hands on)

A THIRD FACE is his greatest work.
This is an absolutely wonderful autobiography. Following his early days as a newspaper writer, his time in WWII, and his years as a writer and director. This is honestly more fun to read than any of his films are to watch.
The most amazing thing about the book is that it is written in his voice. If you ever saw him interviewed, or act in a film, he had a very distinctive voice. The book sounds just like he spoke. With short phrases, lots of exclamation points, just like he sounded!! It is the closest you are going to get to him reading it to you.
Even if you aren't familiar with his films, this is a great read.
