I was looking for a book that would teach me how to do things. I can find lots of information on the internet, but I wanted techniques collaborated in one book by a professional. What I found was a lot of legal background, and historical background. I am not starting a computer forensics firm, but I do want to be able to track down, if some sort of mishap occurs. This book provides low level information, like dissecting Netscape, and going through and showing you how to track someone's steps through Netscape Navigator. I wanted some more practical knowledge that I could use to fight spammers, or to show me how to deal with intrusions on my system. I was disappointed with this book, but I hope that you won't be.

Thorough and suitable for the experienced professional

This book is an excellent follow-on book to Computer Forensics: Incident Response Essentials by Kruse and Heiser, which introduces the fundamentals. This book goes much deeper and is more technical than the Kruse and Heise, therefore the ideal audience is practicing professionals who have prior experience in forensics and a wide range of hardware, software and network knowledge.

Tools and techniques are presented in painstaking detail. I was unable to find a single gap or omission, which speaks highly of the editorial and review process behind this book's 464 pages. While most technical disciplines can dispense with finer details, the nature of forensics is to overlook nothing. If you find the step-by-step thoroughness boring that is an indication that forensics may not be your forte; if you're an experienced professional you'll appreciate the coverage of every technique or use of tools.

While the discussion of tools and techniques will satisfy even the most experienced practitioner, I found the detailed discussion of legal aspects, HR considerations and overall security and incident response processes to be the book's strongest points. This area is what sets forensics experts apart from technicians, and it is here that the book (in my opinion) adds the most value. Procedures ranging from how to properly gather, preserve and control evidence, to legal considerations for designing processes are covered in clear language, as are US and international legal guidelines.

Parts that I especially like include: intrusion management and profiling, up-to-date information on electronic commerce legal issues, the numerous checklists and cited resources, and the clearly delineated process for dealing with incidents.

If you're new to forensics you will probably get more from this book by first reading Computer Forensics: Incident Response Essentials by Kruse and Heiser. If, however, you have previous computer forensics experience or are currently serving in that role this book is probably one of the best investments you can make.

For those interested in pricing and underwriting of group insurance this reference is a must. The previous editions have been used as the basis for seminars for years. I am using it myself as a tool for my underwriters. The techniques can be applied for Life and Disability Insurance and I am recommending it for my company reference library.

Being a long time Alan Kaminsky groupie and self-described landlord, crime buff and NASCAR fan, I found Mr. Kaminsky's book to be both a fantastic and informative journey into the minds of property owners, victims, perverts, freaks, cat burglers and crime scene investigators. I have used the book as a practical and spiritual road map to assist me in the management and securement of my vast holdings. However, as much as the book gives, I feel that its glaring need has become even more apparent in the wake of the new age of terrorism. The book makes no mention of it and it is high time that the third edition, as anticipataed as the latest Harry Potter book, be written. Please Mr. Kaminsky, put pen to paper and give us more!

Timely legislative analysis of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-05
This book contains scholarly articles on genetic antidiscrimination legislation, in particular, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, which prohibits employers and health insurers from discriminating against individuals on the basis of their genetic profiles. Published just before the passage of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (President George W. Bush signed the Act on May 21, 2008), the articles analyze the legislative efforts underlying the Act and present a good, but selective, compilation of the Act's legislative history. Because the book was published before the Act passed the Senate and before it was signed into law, the book omits the final stage of the legislation's history. Otherwise, this is an excellent and timely research tool for law students, legal scholars and attorneys who are trying to discern the legislative intent of this recent (and long-awaited) federal law.

This is not a book for the average Grandpa Joe appealing his medicare claim. It's written for experts, consultants, doctors, and attorneys working with the medicare system. That said, the authors are national experts and record a great deal of information and insight about how Medicare works. Also useful are references to a lot of parts of the statute and regulations and where some of the reg's and laws came from. Some aspects of appeals have changed in the couple years since this book, but most of it is still very useful. it has alot of information on the coverage system and policy development in general, not just appeals per se.

The empirical research that tort law needs
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-18
For me as a European law professor this - admittedly somewhat outdated book - was very helpful in many respects: it showed me how thorough research on the tort process and its shortcomings is performed and it also convinced me that medical malpractice is quite different from say automobile accidents as far as the role of tort law is concerned. I think that this is a good book to read for anyone studying the tort process and evaluating the arguments for and against alternative patient insurance arrangements. I was a bit disappointed by the final chapter ('Ruminations for the future'), because the policy statements and suggestions for reform in that chapter are in my opinion not really firmly backed by the empirical evidence of the previous chapters.

A good book on a contentious topic. Written by an experienced health care economist and an attorney, the authors attempt to provide a broad perspective on medical malpractice. Sloan and Chepke agree that there are serious problems with medical malpractice, but not the problems generally discussed in most public forums. The intermittant public attention paid to this issue is driven often by intermittant malpractice 'crises' in which insurers withdraw from markets, premiums escalate sharply, and there is fear of consequent physician withdrawal from states with sharply rising premiums. A common popular perception of these crises is that they are driven by excessive tort litigation and awards. In fact, there is little evidence for this explanation and recurrent malpractice insurance crises apparently have their roots in other phenomena, notably cyclical features of the insurance industry. Another common public point of discussion is that malpractice litigation is a significant contributor to rising health care costs. The available evidence, however, suggests that malpractice torts have at best a modest effect on health care costs.
Where Sloan and Chepke see major problems with malpractice torts is their apparent failure to have an impact on the high rate of serious medical errors in the USA. In addition, the data cited by Sloan and Chepke indicates that the tort system does a poor and inefficient job of compensating individuals injured through negligence. Sloan and Chepke discuss the first generation of tort reforms which are mainly caps on awards. The major effects of these reforms has been indeed to reduce awards, claims, and insurance premiums with the primary beneficiaries being physicians and insurers. It appears that first generation reforms are a stereotypical example of successful interest group lobbying of state legislatures with modest general public benefits.
Much of the book is a systematic discussion of proposed reforms including such topics as alternative dispute resolution, specialized health courts, no-fault procedures, and a number of others. These discussions are generally thorough, contain nice summaries of the usually limited evidence, and discouraging in the sense that Sloan and Chepke demonstrate the uncertainties that any proposed reforms will work and point out the pragmatic political obstacles to most of these proposed reforms.
Sloan and Chepke conclude with a chapter proposing a series of modest reforms, particularly focused on making hospitals or hospital systems the focus on malpractice litigation in the hope that this will produce incentives to improve patient safety. This is reasonable and approaches like the one proposed are used by some academic hospital systems where physicians are employees.
Sloan and Chepke may make a couple of errors. As they point out, the tort system does a poor job of identifying and compensating meritorious claims. At the same time, a lot of claims pursued do lack merit. But this irrational element is one of the things that physicians most dislike about the present system. While the tort system may not be the 'lottery' claimed by many critics, its irrational enough to be worrisome to health care providers. There is also some recent evidence that some forms of torts do reduce medical errors. Nonetheless, Sloan and Chepke's analysis is convincing and their modest suggestions for reform quite reasonable.
