A revolutionary precedent in human rights

Collaboratively written by Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell, Just Married: Gay Marriage And The Expansion Of Human Rights is an informed and informative analysis of a ground breaking event in culture and society -- the expansion of the concept of matrimony to include same sex couples. When the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto issued marriage licenses to and married two same-sex couples in January of 2001, it offered a revolutionary precedent in human rights and the power of the state to dictate who may and may not marry. Challenges to the same-sex marriage are expected to proceed to the Supreme Court of Canada, and the result could well change human history. An amazing study of political struggles, featuring an inset section of color photographs and a witty eye for detail, Just Married is a solid and eminently readable addition to Gay and Lesbian Studies supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

Although now nearly three decades old, Professor Constance Head's book still strikes an important note. Head professionally lays out an argument seeking the truth behind Justinian II's cruel reputation. I highly recommend her book to anybody who has ever read Turteltaub's (Turtledove's) "Justinian."
Head gives an excellent description of the problem with the primary sources modern historians have on Justinian II's lifetime. Her book goes a long way toward showing Justinian II's constructive side, whereas most other recent authors have concentrated exclusively on branding the emperor as a bloodthirsty pyschopath. Although she tries to portray Justinian more constructively, Head is clear that she is not exonerating Justinian of his mistakes. She simply seeks to point out the historical Justinian II and to explain his life.

Pure poetry and not a word of rhyme. There are sentences in this collection of brief essays that will stop you in your tracks with their beauty and profundity. Mel's writing style is as natural as the natural world of which he writes so fondly. This book is divided into 12 chapters, each one titled for a month of the year. Travel with this great and wise man as he journeys from recollection to remembrance, often personal, always insightful. This is a treasure of a book, and, like love, meant to be shared. Treat yourself, then share with a friend. You all will be glad you did.

Earlier this year I picked up a copy of a book entitled "The Lost Scout" by John R. Riggs on a remainder table in a book store. I had never heard of Mr. Riggs until then, and I found out that 13 of these novels were written between 1984 and 1998. I think the prime reason I hadn't heard of him is the fact that all his novels were published by minor publishing companies. Since "The Lost Scout" is the last of the Ryland novels, I decided to start at the beginning of the series with "The Last Laugh". Garth Ryland is a fortyish newspaper editor for the Oakalla (Wisconsin) Reporter. Si Buckles, Oakalla's practical joker, is dead. Garth goes to the funeral, but later finds a note at his house that says "Si Buckles lives." Phil Chesterson, a friend of Si's kills himself for reasons no one knows. Then Dr. Fran Baldwin commits suicide. Several people, including the lovely Diana, Fran's wife and Garth's dear friend, see Si Buckles walking around. Is Si really dead? Could it be that he was buried alive as a joke? Has a murder occurred? This is not a typical mystery novel. In fact it is not only a "who-done-it?" but a "what has been done to whom?" as well. I really enjoyed reading this novel. It is set in small town America, and is quite a bit of fun. I look forward to reading the rest of these novels!

A great wealth of knowledge is packed into this volume. It includes extensive info about Spain as well, including the Reconquista and Age of Exploration. This is the only place I have been able to find detailed maps of both Bolivar and San Martin's campaigns in English. I would have liked to see a bit more about British & American imperialism in the 19th century, but overall it is a great book. I would puchase a newer, up-to-date version in a heartbeat.

Any book with three photos of my grandpa Gonzalez and one of my mom has got to receive 5 stars!
Latinos in Waukesha is a fantastic chronicle of the Hispanic influence in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the city where yours truly grew up and inherited 25% Mexican blood from my mother, she was half, I'm a quarter.
The book consists primarily of old-school pics that shed a lot of information on Waukesha and the historical role Latinos played in it, enlightening me on some things I never knew about Waukesha and its large industrious Mexican population. If you're in any way connected to the area you might want to check out this excellent work for a fabulous and enthralling crash course in local history.
The city of Waukesha is a 15 minute drive west of Milwaukee. It's a city of about 75,000 which for all intents and purposes has held its own relative identity and hasn't become a bland suburb. The rest of surrounding Waukesha County is a different matter.

We're performing this play at my high school for our 1 act and I have to say It's quite amazing. Even though we have to cut the play down to a short 40 minutes for competition. I always get emotional seeing the journey up to the devastating end. If your in to intense dramas then this is perfect for you.
