Essentials on Korean Americans
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-16
This volume is a publication commemorating the first 100 years of Korean immigration. From its account of the rich history of Korean immigration to the United States, to providing current sociological research on such issues as the interplay of family dynamics and gender roles in Korean-owned businesses or the role and function of religious communities in the discovery of the Korean identity, this work presents a panoramic tour of a people desiring to belong within the American milieu while retaining the heritage and values of a homeland they left. In the end, a compelling vision is made for an active engagement of all Koreans and Korean-Americans into the social, political, cultural, and economic life of the United States that does not negotiate one's tradition and self-identity, but one which enriches them and inspires others to join in the enterprise. By charting the history and lessons of Korean immigration, the contributors uncover the values and spirit of Korean immigrants and how the struggle to survive and thrive, then and now, is reinterpreted by each succeeding generation. Included in this book is a section of prize-winning essays submitted by Korean-American college students concerning topics including acculturation and the role of Korean-Americans in politics.

As a fellow researcher in the area of Southern to Northern migration, Grossman's book has been invaluable to me. It is well written, well researched, and immensely interesting. It is the best book on the first great black Southern migration to Chicago, "The Land of Hope."

A true depiction of Latino violent crime
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-19
In this book, Ramiro Martinez challenges traditional media accounts of immigration and violent crime. Latino Homicide is informative, captivating and reader-friendly because the writer presents an unbiased view of the realities immigrants face in urban America.

Immigration has long been thought of as a precursor to violent crime. However, in this text Martinez presents a very different perspective-one supported by rigorous studies and serious research. His findings suggest that Latino immigration does not necessarily create violent crime, but instead helps create a strong social network that allows Latinos to deal with increasing pressures to conform to a culture where discrimination is prominent in both legislation and public policy. Importantly, Martinez engages the reader where previous writings have failed to forge -- recognizing the distinguishing characteristics of the Latino community, particularly their ability to adapt to poverty and inadequate resources for growth, socioeconomic conditions that have a detrimental effect on the crime rates of other races.

In comparing homicide rates between five major cities with a significant Latino presence -- Chicago, El Paso, Houston, Miami, and San Diego -- Martinez is able to draw conclusions that conflict with popular beliefs and enlighten the reader to a truer depiction of the correlation between violent crime and immigration.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in finding out the truth about Latino homicide and how current research statistics in this book invalidate the stereotype of Latinos being violent-prone criminals.

Latvians in Michigan is a wonderful book full of factual and personal glimpses of the Latvian families who came to America in the late 1940s when the Communists took over their homeland. The history is facinating and the personal journeys many of our Latvian neighbors and friends made were captivating reading. I have a new understanding and reverence for their customs, intelligence, the many gifts they bring to our communities and their commitment to preserving their country's traditions. There are many recipes for Latvian food and I loved the personal accounts told by those who attended and sent their children to the Latvian camp at Long Lake, Three Rivers, Michigan. I highly recommend this book for its readability, history and humanity. Bravo, Dr. Meija! Janet Howell-Obert

A comprehensive, easy-to-read breakdown of an important longitudinal study on immigrant youth
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-23
Suarez-Orozco et. al set out with a distinct goal for the Longitudinal Immigration Student Adaptation study, and they met this goal through a robust, mixed-methodologies study of recently arrived immigrant students in the United States. The mix of ethnographic, psychological, and educational metrics used are artfully described in the introduction, contextualizing the resultant data in meaningful ways. The outward purpose of Longitudinal Immigrant Student Adaptation Study, and by extension Learning in a New Land, is to "gain a more complete understanding of the experience of immigration," (p.6). More specifically, the book seeks to illuminate the academic progress of recently arrived immigrant children over five years. The authors successfully achieve this, reporting the statistically significant and case study-based findings for how elements of immigrant children's lives interact to affect academic achievement.
Overall, the book does an excellent job in presenting the results of a large-scale study in a relevant, nuanced form that is easily read by educational professionals of varying orientations. The policy implications are clearly advocated. However, the book's treatment of micro-issues, such as how educators can mitigate the effects gender has on educational achievement, lacks concrete suggestions. The field can pick up where the authors left off by discussing such issues that were raised in the research. I expect discussion of theory and possible interventions to follow this work. Carola and Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, Irina Todorova, and the myriad field researchers deserve congratulations for a comprehensive, well-defined, rigorous study that is expertly summarized and discussed in Learning in a New Land.
