Wyoming Books

Wright largely planned and built by Atlantic Richfield Company to provide housing for miners, is a social experiment in which sponsors have tried to give residents a sense of continuity, independence and pride in their community.

John D. Nesbitt is one amazing writer! His protagonist Owen Felver is an honest man, kind and thoughtful.The story unfolds with grace and ease. I haven't read to many books like this, where I would forget I was reading at times. Very vivid, with a clarity that is hard to believe. If you only read one western this year, this is it. Outstanding!

Dane Coolidge's writing was masterful in it's depiction of the Old West. This is no stale cliche riddled story about gunslingers or a land war that takes place in the literary equivelent of one of those generic false-fronts and soundstage towns in bad B-Western films. Coolidge's writing brings the Wyoming of this period to life in all of it's detail, big and small, the beauty and the grit and grime.

The Medicine Bow Mountain Range is in southeastern Wyoming, and this book gives a very good chronological history of this area. The authors begin with the earliest known evidence of man inhabiting this area, then move on to talk about how the Indians,fur trappers and mountain men influenced this part of the west. William Ashley paved the way for the Overland Trail, Jim Bridger helped to explore this region and John Fremont mapped this part of the west. Chapters on the logging, mining and grazing industries are also very interesting. The railroad had a major fundamental part in the development of this area. The authors also talk about the Medicine Bow National Forest and how till this day, it is still trying to be a land for multiple use. I really enjoyed this book, there is a lot of history here.

Picked it up from a library display and couldn't put it down until I finished. Twenty-seven chapters about 27 different folks, some of them husband and wife. Individuals who, in reality, spent the latter part of the 19th century and most of the 20th century making a difference and affecting how Wyoming was, but more importantly, how Wyoming IS! Their love of the mountains and their way of life made and are making Wyoming history. Without some of these folks, there might not be hunting seasons; in fact, their might not be game to hunt. And those contributions range to cover many other states; all states neighboring Wyoming and more than likely, the whole North American Continent. A tribute to hardy folks living in a harsh environment and making the best of it in many, many ways. You feel you get to know some of them, even in a short chapter. A good read for young and old.

This book is one of a handful that is perfect for young readers between the ages of 8 and 15 or so, though people of any age can read and enjoy this book. The book has a good moral, but is also a good adventure and just an all around wonderful book. Pick up a copy, you won't be disapointed.

Well written and researched book. Reading this book not only helps one understand the history of Monacan Indian nation but provides another window into understanding American history - especially from another perspective. Seeing references to some of my ancestors only heightened the joy of the read. This book is a great read for anyone desiring to broaden their own understanding of the period, the era and the people of colonial America.

Wyoming is a magical state - wild, wide open, lonely, and full of wonders - and this book provides the most thorough treatment of all the many things available for adventurers in this unique state. From Yellowtone and Grand Teton National Parks to the wild Wind River and Medicine Bow Mountains, the lonely Red Desert, the Cowboy Country, the lovely Star Valley, and the Native American sites of the North-East, it covers the state with the sort of familiarity and appreciation that is rare in most commercially-oriented guidebooks. As a guidebook author myself, I'd rate it among the finest I've ever used.

After getting the books in this series for my father (who'd read them when he was younger as was thrilled to get them), I decided to get it and read it for myself. What a good book!!

This is the essential topographical map for hiking in Grand Teton National Park. Like other Trails Illustrated maps, this one comes with all sorts of practical information on the back side of the map. None of this will be new to you if you've read the guide books above, but it's moderately useful having it repeated here.

This map lists some trails but the information isn't full enough to be really useful. Be sure to have a trail guide.
