"Erastus Hodges" and early development of Torrington

This work was both fact-filled and very enjoyable. As an early history of Torrington it explains how and why the "Torrington Green" area became the dominant economic and social center of town, a fact which most residents, including many who now live in the area, should become more familiar with. The people in this book, gone now for more than a century and a half, come to life in a way that makes them seem like your neighbors. This book ties together a lot of information from the days of the first settlers of town to the days when the industrial revolution transformed Torrington from an agricultural hill town to a booming river town. I have studied a lot of the people mentioned in this book, and while I like all the local histories, this is the best one written on Torrington and deserves to be on your book-shelf.

Even if you're not a Twain fan you'll probably like this book. It's hilarious-- laugh out loud funny-- and feels very modern. If you're expecting a quaint, outdated book you'll be immensely and pleasurably surprised.
And this specific edition is great too, with one side of the book for Adam's diary and the other for Eve's. (In other words, there's no front or back-- it's two covers, one for each diary.)

This book is excerpted from Dr. Stiles two-volume history of one of Connecticut's original three river towns. Many of the hundreds of genealogies found in Clearfield's reprint carry the pioneering families of Wethersfield forward over many generations from the time of the town's founding in the seventeenth century and are replete with biographical details on numerous descendants. This book is the most comprehensive and scholarly book available on the history of Farmington, CT. It contains a wealth of information about the families that settled the Farmington valley, including Bird, Stanley, Porter, Steele, North, Gridley, Scott, Cole, Cowles, Woodford, Hawley, and many others. It is massively footnoted, and must be considered a starting point and resource book for any serious genealogist studying the 17th century settlement of the Farmington Valley in Connecticut. Most highly recommended.

Fouche like Talleyrand are secondary historical figures. The amazing thing about both of them is their ability to survive numerous regime changes in France. This book details Fouche's life and his survival skills and how he used the power he had to his best advantage.
Fouche a nd talleyrand could be described as political sociopaths, read this book and you will se why.

Very well written, but why not, it was written by John T. Fitch who has spent so much time researching the Fitch family. He knows our family inside and out. This book traces the early Fitch family back to England. There are numerous pictures in it from documents in old England. If you don't understand some of the words from old England have no fear, he gives a wonderful Glossary with definitions. He explains how the Fitch name and it's different spellings came about and has an extensive index. There are explanations on the different coats of arms and where they originated from. It reads like a novel though. You can sit down and just run through it quite fast and then go back and get the details on the different names for research. What a wonderful book for your Fitch research and best of all he's done the work for you.

This book is chock full of great information for any foodie living in Connecticut. Not only are there great tips on restaurants, but also tips on artisan food producers, farms, farmers markets, gourmet shops, recipes, etc, etc. I have been a fan of Patricia Brooks restaurant reviews but this volume exceeded my expectations. It's also written in a chatty personal style that's fun to read. A real treasure!

This publication is a treasure trove of information on the people who lived in Simsbury, Connecticut in 1930. As a genealogist from this area I realize how wonderful this book is for researchers. If you have relatives or ancestors who resided in Simsbury at that time, this publication is a must. I wish all the towns could have a resource like this one. Great job Jean!!
