Captures Jewish "philosophy of life" if there is one.Review Date: 1997-12-21
I have given copies of this book to my (Jewish) father who is as easily impressed as all Jewish parents -- and he loved it and reads the stories to friends he visits in a Jewish nursing home. They love them. I have also shared the stories with the non-Jews of a library literary discussion group to which I belong, and they have loved them. So, nu, what are you waiting for? Buy the book already. It's not like it costs so much money; the pleasure will be worth the few pennies you spend.

And all this while, Elizabeth and Todd are trying to track down who attacked Todd. And Winston cheats on his pyhsics exam because he is failing pyhsics and if he does not pass, then his parents will send him to a different school and he won't be able to see Denise, his girlfriend, anymore. Tom goes off to Las Vages for a reporting job.
Great, well-written novel! I congradaulate Laurie John for an excellent novel and a terrific addition to the SWEET VALLEY UNIVERSITY series. If you're an SVU fan, this is definitely for you! The romance and affection between Jessica and Professor Louis Miles will have you engrossed 'til the end and be begging for more! I totally recommend this book.

Don't let the garish cover art distract you. This is a solidly good book, which I regularly recommend to my clients. Of course, I can't vouch for the Price Waterhouse consulting group's ability to get clients to change successfully or whether they even follow their own advice. I just know that I do apply the best ideas in this book (plus some of my own) in my consulting practice.

Invigorating.Review Date: 2005-12-21
When we see a title that puts the Bible alongside the "New York Times" we say, "Oh yes, that reminds me of Karl Barth, whose advice was: "The Christian must always read with the Bible in one hand and the morning paper in the other."
Dr. Rutledge does just that in this elegant collection of sermons, most of which she first preached at the Grace Episcopal Church in Manhattan, or congregations in some of New York's bedroom communities. Now, Dr. Rutledge has turned her attention to conducting a national evangelistic ministry, but at the time these sermons were first presented, she was a preaching pastor in a busy city congregation, of bright and thoughtful Christians and other seekers. Her messages were well received by that group of worshipers and they have the potential to inspire the reader.
Dr. Rutledge's prose is both eloquent and forthright. Her sermon "Believing without Seeing" is a good example, taking as its text the "Doubting Thomas" passage from the Gospel of John, Chapter 21. In one paragraph she opens up the Biblical narative to anyone who may have quesitons, by asking some very pointed questions, "Is there anyone here today who is wondering if the Resurrection could possibly be true? Do you have conditions that must be met before you will believe? Or, perhaps, do you believe vaguely in something called `life after death' without ever having considered putting your trust in the only One who has ever come back victoriously from the grave?" (Page 143)
This kind of preaching is invigorating. It puts me in mind of people like the late Dr. Fred Speakman and Dr. Frank Harrington. Suffice it to say that Dr. Rutledge's sermons are all edifying. One can understand why this book and others that she has published are so well received. To have the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other, and the ear and heart of those who are hungry to hear and receive-what could be better!

A rare gem from a fantastic preacherReview Date: 2005-06-03
The Bible and the New York Times is just that: an exploration of popular culture and the Christian faith that is neither sugary nor ignorant of the realities of suffering and pain. Rev. Rutledge is able to bring sound biblical exegesis and a vibrant style to her writing that is only surpassed by actually hearing her in person. Following the main days of the church year, this book helps the reader to pause and think of how the various days of the church calendar are relevant to modern people with faith. She brings out the rhythm of the people of God as they try to live out their faith in a secularized world, but she does so without resorting to easy or pat answers.
Read and Enjoy!

All that is goodReview Date: 2005-08-26
The book is laced with metaphorical encouragement that just prompts the reader to be enlightened and renewed. One passage that stuck with me was "Feed your heart with the goodness of God." Here, Ms. Copeland is urging readers to not only trust God for eternal salvation but challenges us to see the daily goodness of God in the land of the living. He is a redeemer, a conqueror, and all in all, He is love! BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE reminds us that God will fulfill our desires, and by having faith, God will bless us and provide deliverance just like he did for Israel.
This book is filled with positivity and has an upbeat vibe that is undeniable! If during your Christian walk, you're looking for some solid reinforcement and reassuring direction, look no further. BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE is written in a flowing manner that is easy to understand yet filled with wonderful insight.

God IS a Good GodReview Date: 2004-11-27
All of the Goodness of God described in the Holy Scriptures of the Bible is for You and me today. Healing, freedom, protection, and prospertiy is for you. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Gloria Copeland gently leads her readers from the very basic truth that understanding God's Goodness is the foundation of our faith. As you progress through each chapter Gloria takes the reader through the scriptures where the goodness of God is declared.
It is hard not to get excited when you discover that God has blessings stored up for you, that God has a good place and a good plan for your life. And, it is not too late to get started.
As I read through Gloria's book, I kept asking myself, how do I experience ALL of God's goodness? I was not disappointed to find there is a chapter called "The Key to Heaven's Storehouse."
My friend, God is looking for a "Receiver."
"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him." 2 Chronicles 16:9
Don't let the word "perfect" throw you off the track. The word that is translated "perfect" in this passage actually means "devoted, faithful, dedicated, loyal and consecrated."
Baby steps. Begin with receiving the gift of salvation. As you learn to trust his goodness, the more he will show his goodness and strength on your behalf.
Get the full picture. Read this book. Let Gloria Copeland minister to you as she leads you through scripture and be challenged to receive the Goodness of God in Your life.

This is what converts are looking for!Review Date: 1999-07-24
Of course this isn't a perfect book: some of the "traditions" seem to be rather strage and unfamiliar to everyone. But many of them are really nice ideas - at least I will have use of them even though I'm not a convert.
Actually there were only two faults: a wider range of customs could have been presented. It would have given the reader a choice. If the reader is really creating a catholic family, a wider range of choices would be needed. The authors have also neglected the real everyday life with no festivities, devotional nook suggestions alone I find too little.
But yes, well worth buying!

I am, however, a writer - and Karyn Kedar shares her call to write this book when she says, "Write. About forgiveness. Write. A subtle echo of new life. Write." and I think every writer who has experienced a spiritual call will know, will understand, will nod alongside these words.
YES! Write, we say, enthusiatically.
This impressive book is about forgiveness without forgetting. It is about healing and wholeness. It shares its message through a combination of instructive prose, poetry (almost like songs or psalms) and a memoir style of writing.
I couldn't help but write quotes as I read along - for example.... "Acceptance is the compassionate embrace of yourself and your place in the world: without judment, without fear, without regret. You are who you are. You are not who you are not."
Simple, yes. Strong? Indeed!
This universal message will (I hope and pray) find its way into the hands and hearts of readers of all faiths. Read it, embrace it, live it.
A gem of a book!Review Date: 2007-05-25

However the stories also point up the difference between stories which are stories in the street, anecdotal stories, and stories which are more complex literary creations. In this I think stories of the folk kind cannot possibly have the kind of aesthetic value that for instance a written story of Bashevis Singer might have.
