A Prophetic Look at the Current State of the ChurchReview Date: 2001-03-18
Tommy Tenney has more than bested his earlier blockbuster--The God Chasers. Chasers was a must read book. Catchers is an absolute necessity.
From finding the "key" to the back stairs leading to God's heart, to the revelation that the purpose of worship in church should be to bless God not be a bless-me club for the worshippers, the principles found in the God Chasers position us to catch and retain the next wave of God's blessing.
I've been a Christian for twenty-seven years and hold an earned doctorate in Theology. Yet, upon completing this book, I feel like I am starting afresh on a new level. The truth of the Father in this book has changed me. Don't read this book unless you are willing to be changed.

Super Follow-up Book!Review Date: 2002-05-11
This church should be read by everyone who wants to see their church get back on track. In addition, every single pastor in America should read this book. This will certainly tell you what to do to get your church where God wants it to be and where your focus needs to be. I must warn you though, if you're used to man's ways and a regular organized system and style for having church, this book may rock the boat a bit for you. This book is only for those that are serious about getting their church out of man's will and into God's will. After all, isn't that where we should be anyway?

Help on the Spiritual PathReview Date: 2001-11-06
If you are looking for a book that demonstrates that the prayer services, rituals, study and observance of the mitzvot really can lead you to a more spiritual life, then you have come to the right place. Rabbi Gordis is eloquent in his belief that traditional Jewish practice can provide spiritual sustenance. If that thought is a sufficient reason for you to "be Jewish," then you will find that Rabbi Gordis has also answered the first question posed above. The problem for me, however, is that Rabbi Gordis does not really address why it should be *Jewish* study, prayer, ritual and discipline that leads one to spirituality. Most of the arguments Rabbi Gordis provides apply equally, at least in general terms, to other religions I have studied. Prayer, ritual, discipline and ethics, in one form or another, are shared by Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Why one should adopt *Jewish* forms of spirituality -- and what sets Jewish forms apart from other religions -- are questions not addressed in this book.
Rabbi Gordis includes a *very* helpful section of "Suggestions for Further Reading," which is arranged by the themes covered in each chapter and provides a brief comment on each of the books, instead of just the usual unadorned list.
Serious modern Jewish thought for the beginner.Review Date: 2000-10-01
My only complaint is that R'Gordis opens with a number of theological questions which he implies will be resolved in the course of his book - Not surprisingly, they are not. However, this is a minor quibble as he has plenty of great company in this stretching back over 3000 years.

Getting Back to God's Purpose for Your LifeReview Date: 2008-09-27
Monroe's writing is strong and articulate, appealing to the intellect and to the practical. His clear powerful gospel message does not espouse religion but emphasizes the plan and purpose of God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
The book is filled with scriptural content which guides the reader into an understanding of the precepts of God's Kingdom. Munroe then opens the way for the individual to "Reclaim God's Original Purpose for their life."
This is a book for everyone desirous of fulfilling their destiny while impacting today's culture for God's Kingdom purposes.

It explains each book of the bible in accordance with the time and the events taking place; as well as the people and the parts they played.
Back to Myles Munroe, tho..reading what he has to say, shines the light of illumination, on "the word" as I've never had it explained before. I believe, as another poster said, that he was destined for these times; and, those who take the time, will certainly be blessed, by reading his Kingdom series. Reading God's BIG Idea, is a Great Idea!

The Law is good BUT it is powerless to change us into its demandsReview Date: 2007-03-09
Zahl's section on anthropology, setting up his soteriology, is insightful. His argument for the "unfree will" is compelling as he makes us look hard at the realities of addictions, anger, depression, losing weight, etc. To tell someone to have a positive attitude when they are struggling with depression is inhumane. The Gospel is not about us pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. It is about Someone loving us when we are stuck, powerless and without hope.
Summary: Grace is One Way Love. Law is Two Way Love. The Law is good because it reveals God's standard. BUT the law is powerless to change us into those demands. Only Grace can do this. Christ loved us while we were yet sinners. May we learn to treat others the same way.

Breathing Fresh Air Again!Review Date: 2007-05-14
Paul Zahl's book, "Grace in Practice," breathes fresh air into the lungs of any burned-out (or soon to be burned out) Christian. Tossing out the tired, moralistic approaches to Christianity that are popular but which bury the true message of the faith (the Vox Ipsissimi Christianismi), Zahl goes back to the basics of the Christian Gospel--namely, Christ's unmeritted, one-way love to sinners (including Christian sinners).
Zahl stresses the early Reformational insights of distinguishing Law and Gospel, Low Anthropology and High Christology, Judgment and Love. His understanding (which is not his alone, but is a largely-forgotten treasure shared by Augustine, Luther, Calvin, and Cranmer) that Grace actually produces what the Law commands is life-changing.
Anyone, especially any clergy person who is in need of the refreshing truth of God's Grace, which trumps all other messages, needs to look no further than "Grace in Practice." This book, which concretizes God's grace in all aspects of life (and is chuck-full of great movie quotes!) will hopefully shake-up and shake-off the toxic and widespread moralism of current American Christianity.
Grace, Grace, Infinite GraceReview Date: 2007-04-21
This book is about all about grace. How does grace relate to Law and to other fundamental Christian doctrines? Zahl argues for an expansive view of grace in all areas of life - family, society, and the church. He writes in a lively conversational tone, and sprinkles in a lot of references to popular culture. This book is not dull, and the author was not afraid to hit hard, challenging me on several fronts.
However, there are points of disagreement. For example, in speaking about "Grace in the pulpit", he says, "Sermons should be brief... a minimum of ten minutes and a maximum of twenty. This has everything to do with the humility and the grace-full deference of the preacher." Ligon Duncan, one of my favorite preachers, will speak for an hour on biblical doctrines (like grace) out of the conviction that the hearing of the Word of God preached is a fundamental mark of a biblical church. And when he does so, people leave wishing that he could have preached longer.
So, this book sits as an anomaly. I would suggest it to some who are up for the challenge, but for most people I would recommend other books if they are looking to go deep in their study of grace.
A Tour De Force on Living Gracefully Review Date: 2007-06-16
Zahl begins the book by writing extensively about the reality of grace and its conflict with law and judgment. This explanation of grace lays a firm foundation upon which Zahl builds the remaining two-thirds of the book. In Zahl's theology, there is a war between grace and law, and grace is man's only hope through which all blessings flow.
This is NOT a book only for theologians and "professional" Christians. As Zahl explains, the "focus is on everyday life..on how Christianity works...an attempt to bring the gospel of law and grace into direct encounter with the real and tangible stress of living a life within the swooning, human world."
Zahl reveals his uncanny gift of knowing the pulse of the church and the culture. In that gift, he stands alone among writers I have read as someone who relates the mysteries of Christ to matters of everyday life.
His chapter on "Grace in Families" has the insights to improve all of your relationships more than any "relationship" or "marriage" book I have yet read. "Grace in Church" shows the level of learning from experience that Zahl has garnered from over 30 years in ministry. These sections will open the eyes of ministers from all areas and ages.
"Grace in Society" and "Grace in Everything" round out the above sections. If there is any weakness in this profound exhortation to grace it is in the "Grace in Society" section, as I think Zahl leaves some important matters unaddressed in relation to dealing with criminals and terrorist states. In all others areas, his writings of grace are fully applicable and practical; however, in dealing with criminals and aggressive states, the practical application is lacking.
There are few writers or theologians who can effectively balance such writing with quotes from famed theologians along side quotes of vignettes from South Park, Hollywood or the like of The Beatles and Stephen King. Zahl pulls it off masterfully. All sorts of readers will be able to find answers to life's biggest questions and challenges in this book and will find it enjoyable and a pleasure to read.

A book worthy of an in-depth readReview Date: 2008-07-14
As implied by the jacket --- a shepherd's staff superimposed and looming over a bucolic scene --- the loose overarching framework of the book is Psalm 23. If the Lord is our shepherd, as both the Old and New Testaments affirm, he is leading us --- guarding us, guiding us --- in a trustworthy manner.
Much of the book discusses living the daily Christian walk, by biblical counsel and command, and discerning what is good and right. But one chapter delves specifically into vocational issues or "decisions that we expect to be life-shaping hinge-points on which we think our future will turn." They continue, "We hope that what we have to say will go some way to relieving the tension and anxiety that the making of such decisions can bring."
This is not a light read. Personal, historical and biblical anecdotes supplement the authors' points, which are clearly introduced and well outlined. But the sentences themselves require one's full attention. For example, early in the book the authors summarize "the shape" (as opposed to the "scope" or the "specifics") of guidance: "The regular shape of guidance is that God teaches us to apply revealed principles of action, both positive and negative; to observe parameters and limits of behavior that the Bible lays down; and thus to follow the path of faithful obedience and true wisdom, in fellowship with the Lord our shepherd who by his Spirit leads us to do so."
The last chapter of the book focuses on the role of the Holy Spirit and discusses the pitfalls of both undervaluing and overvaluing "God's gift of reason." This chapter is worth waiting for and takes the reader beyond a biblical wisdom and reason and godly counsel model.
Speaking of godly counsel, book lovers will be happy to note that Packer and Nystrom espouse not only having Christian role models to imitate; they also claim that "the habit of reading Christian biography, as well as Scripture, is as much to be encouraged as is the habit of associating with the liveliest and ripest Christians that we know."
Some 10 study questions (for each of 11 chapters) supplement the text, making the book a great candidate for serious topical Bible study.

J. I. Packer and Carolyn Nystrom answer these fears with Guard Us, Guide Us. They provide essential understanding to what "God's guidance" represents to Christians. Those seeking a deeper and more meaningful understanding as to how God does indeed guard and guide us will enjoy this inspiring and somewhat devotional book.
Packer, an evangelical theologian, and Nystrom, a freelance writer, collaborate to reveal traditional misconceptions of God's guidance, ideas that promote fear and discouragement among many Christians.
Packer and Nystrom proceed with a "where you are now" snapshot of spiritual health-without this analysis, it is difficult to get a feel of what spiritual guidance could provide in a Christian's life. They discuss God's teachings and commandments in scripture and apply spiritual wisdom to real-life scenarios. Guard Us, Guide Us is a thought account of how to deepen our knowledge of spiritual reflection and build our efforts at effective decision making for life's small (and not so small) challenges.

I usually find J.I. Packer a bit hard to read as he's usually very intense, but his collaboration with Caroyln Nystrom was a wonderful idea as she helps to get his point across in a very readable manner.
As an added bonus, the questions included make this book easy to use in a group setting.
If you are seeking God's direction in your life, this is a good book to read.
This will become a classic book on guidance.Review Date: 2008-03-25
This book is the clearest, most scripturally-based and complete treatment of this topic I have read. Starting with the need to deal with fear, the author(s) (the book was co-written with Carolyn Nystrom) use Psalm 23 as a template for divine guidance and its special treatment of our need to discard fear as a driver for our actions.
The suthors then go through the respective roles of God's Word, God's wisdom (in that regard), the counsel of friends, the problems presented by a situational ethics view for guidance, the role of the Holy Spirit and an excellent summation.
If you have read Packer, you know he likes to "pack the ideas tight", so it isn't a fast read, but it isn't like C.S. Lewis's "Miracles" either. I believe Carolyn Nystrom was instrumental in spacing the ideas out a bit so it was easier to assimilate. There are also some great questions at the end of the book so you can use the book in a group setting.
Strongly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking God's guidance as they make decisions in their lives.
Great teaching on how Christians receive God's guidanceReview Date: 2008-03-25
Here is a new book written by two authors who construct beautiful sentences and well-crafted chapters in order to teach Christians how it is that God communicates His will to us.
This book is not short, skimpy, or sparing. It is more than just simple principles, and yet in many ways it arises from a simple (and Scriptural) formulaic understanding of divine guidance. In fact, I often felt I was reading an expanded and prosaic version of John MacArthur's straightforward "Found: God's Will" booklet (with 5 principles I can still remember twenty years later).
The basic thrust of the book is to put "an end to fear"- the fear found in the heart of a believer over what God's will is for their life. The authors combat false understandings, "some tangled tales" that hamper freedom and joy in the life of a believer who doubts whether they really can know God's will. Furthermore, the authors seek to combat the notion that one bad mistake along the journey will inevitably thwart any future attempt to be found in God's will.
They begin and end with Psalm 23 theology, establishing the "guard" and "guide" verbs of love flowing from the good shepherd to his sheep. They also show how the Word of God provides light and understanding, and how we are to obey the divine text as being the very will of God, for that it is what it is.
The vital foundation for hearing and following God's will is to be walking in overall spiritual health and vitality. This means holiness and purity and a heart desire to glorify God and obey Him. Without this commitment, a professing Christian has no reason to expect their sickly spiritual life will have ears and mind and heart to properly hear from God.
Packer and Nystrom present the church with a fresh formulation of divine spiritual direction. I am sure that additional reading and meditation will yield even more spiritual profit from their words. I can see this book being very useful for late high school and college students.

Geshe Kelsang gives detailed instructions on the eleven yogas of generation stage, which provide us with a special method for transforming all our daily activities into the spiritual path. In Guide to Dakini Land he also clearly explains the completion stage practices of Vajrayogini practice, which lead us to full enlightenment.
There is no other book out there that describes the visualizations, practices, and methods with such clarity and depth. This book contains everything a Vajrayogini practioner needs to embark upon and complete the path to enlightenment. I feel so fortunate to have this book as a resource. I recommend it to all Vajrayogini practitioners who have the wish to deepen their experience of generation stage and completion stage. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso also provides a wealth of information on how to do a qualified Tantric retreat and how to build a strong foundation based upon Buddha's Sutra teachings, so our minds are well-prepared for Tantric initiations and subsequent practice.
