Fun Toolkit (Sort of like party with a purpose)

Review Date: 2002-07-09
Are you having enough fun in your life? Enough play? Do you feel a lack of self expression welling up inside you? (It may not even be said, only felt). Remember when you used to dance, and frolic, and sing, and make up ditties, and hang out more often? This book reconnects you to that place, and to heart and soul, without being sentimental or infantile like a lot of creativity workshops or New Age pablum. This is a book that integrates the rarest of combinations - meaning and play (and soul). You know, like party with a purpose. It's hard to describe what goes on here, but it's sure to bring sparks and fun into every day of your life. And it's WAY cheaper than a workshop or therapy!
I've taken many workshops with Nina over the last six or seven years, and this book distills ALL of what she teaches and more. It's a gold mine for your self - and your friends. A perfect book to give for any occasion - birthday, graduation, wedding, Christmas. Who couldn't use a book like this?

Find your own creativity
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-24
As a teenager, I once took out a couple of library books that purportedly tested your creativity. According to them, I failed miserably because I didn't come up with the "right" answers, and it was years before I realized that I'd actually been TOO creative for the tests! But their approach is typical of how narrowly our educational system defines creativity: if you have a gift for (say) drawing or singing, you can become a professional in the arts, but otherwise creativity is irrelevant to most people's daily lives. And, anyway, even if you feel that you'd enjoy taking a pottery class or an acting workshop, you have more important things to do with your time and money. Nina Wise shows us how to circumvent both of these obstacles and bring creative expression into our lives. The crucial factor is awareness, both of ourselves and of the world around us. Her exercises give us the opportunity to know ourselves as complex beings, with bodies as well as minds and spirits, and to appreciate the beauty and complexity of even the most mundane aspects of our surroundings. Becoming more aware isn't necessarily easy, or fun, or reassuring, but it can enrich anyone's life immensely. I heartily recommend this book to everyone -- especially those who think "I'm not creative" or "I have nothing to say": you are, and you do, and this is how you find out.

Flawed but VERY meaningful

I was very skeptical of this book (how can you not be with a name like that), but it ended up proving to be a meaningful read. It's not profound in it's concept: the author simply gives you inner "permission" to act on your impulses and emotions. These suggestions are constuctive and sneak into your thinking throughout your day. It's the kind of book that is not jaw dropping when your done, it's meaning trickles slowly and frees you a little.
The author did make you feel great but my only concern is that it made her feel greater. Some passages bordered on bragging but still made you feel as though you also had something to contribute. This book proved me wrong, all in all, and is worth giving a shot.

Brilliant and funny

Nina Wise subtitles her wonderful book, "Self-expression and spritual practice
for those who have time for neither." And she could have added, for those who
don't habitually shop at the Self-Improvement section of the store. I had my
qualms but I had first heard the author's name from an impeccable source so I
carried on and bought it. I quickly realised this wasn't Buddhism Lite or
Self-Realization in Five Minutes a Day. Nina Wise has spent thirty years
performing and leading workshops in improvisation. She brings decades of
experience in an art whose principal act is a requirement, as she describes it
elsewhere, to "(find) words for the story the body wants to tell" and where
"nothing in the psyche feels prepared, ready, secure-the stroll from backstage
to centerstage is an act of faith." It is a scary description and her courage
and commitment are everywhere evident. In this brilliant book we get the
benefits of that commitment as she offers dozens of ten-minute "practices"
drawn from every area of the arts -- singing, drawing, writing, role-playing,
dancing --- wonderful hints that invite us to play: to play with the senses;
play with our sense of self, with our life-history; play with friends, with
lovers, with strangers; play with pain and sickness and bereavement, with loss
and disappointment, anger and frustration, play with happiness. They remind
us to take ten minutes NOW to play, but to play with attention, as adults, to
wake up. She shows that unlocking creativity and self-expression has the
widest consequences: "We are not who we think we are --- we are not what we
do, we are not our age ... our gender or sexual preference ... where we live
... or what religion we were born into or went on to practice ... not our skin
color .. not our bodies ... not our thoughts." Many people have said this but
not many have offered such creative, witty, down-to-earth help to discovering
it for ourselves. And in between we are treated to illustrations from her own
life as daughter, lover, teacher, performer: at home by her dying mother or
wrapped in a "Tantric embrace" round her suitcase on an overnight train trip
in India, the range is enormous. She is deadly serious, serious but never
solemn. "All the great sages I have had the fortune to meet have had a
twinkle in their eyes ... their lightness of being is contagious. In their
presence I too break into a smile that would glow in the dark." Well, that
smile glows all over the page here. This is anything but a ponderous tome and
the opposite of some self-indulgent, feel-good exercise. It is sad, funny,
tough, moving, uproarious, witty, lyrical, passionately articulate and, yes
(I'm not the first to say it) wise. Go ahead, do yourself a favour: sing to
the cat, make art in the yard, throw a hat party, read this book.

Wise is neither pedantic nor obtuse. She offers a great deal of tools for those who would like more out of life, more joy, more excitement.

Hi, I love this book and desire for all of the family of Christ to move to a new level of blessings. Many have give up believing their life could be filled with God's wonderful touch and have been confused as to why. This book will give you one of the main reasons we experience limited blessings in all areas of our lives. By making small changes in our lives we could be on our way to happiness and joy. This book can change your life, just as it changed mine!!!

Provided a ray of hope for divorced daughter
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-01
My daugther has been strugling for the past four years since her divorce with four children, one with emotional problems, anger problems and learning problems. She cried a lot and said she didn't know where to turn to. Someone told me about this book and I let her read mine. She said she finally read a story sort of like hers and it gave her a lot of encouragement. Also, she is having a lot of problems with not enough money. The second part of the book provides a lot of money saving ideas that you can see in your budget when you follow the guidelines. The most important thing is that is written so she could understand it. She said the things she learn in the part called Let's Be Practical are things that are ordinary but she never would have thought of doing it. It really works, she said. Her voice sounded lighter than I had heard in a long time. I am sorry for parents cause I am one myself but I am so glad that this lady was willing to tell of her sorrow and heartbreak as well as the very positive and happy times so my daughter could be helped by it. I recommend this book to ALL PARENTS!

I found this book to be an example of how your everyday life can fall apart but with the guidance and help of God one can over come any obsticles that has been put in one's way. Throught reading this book I found myself seeing life throught the eyes of the author and experiencing what it was like for her. I found this book to be inspiring and influential in it's recommendations for living a christian life as a single parent with all the odds against you. I recommend this book to not only single parents but also to those thinking of becoming parents, thinking of getting married, or those who are married as a guide to help them understand what curve balls life can throw at you and how one can lean on God to help them through.

As I read this book the message that I recieved from it was one of courage and determination to go on with everyday life even though where the means to go on where unknown however with God's help in providing the author always had everything that she needed for herself and her kids. They didn't always have the best of everything but they had each other and God and could do anything because of God. It is a great encouragement for single parents who have either divorced or been abandoned or widowed. It tells how one can survive and bring up a christian family with God's help.

This book is very valuable to anyone who reads it. I paused to consider my own lifestyle and how I needed to make some changes for the better. The powerful and emotional love this mother has for her sons, especially the special needs child, would make any mother's heart melt. As a social worker, I found it extremely effective to pass on to parents who were thinking about divorce. It has the ability to save marriages, make you realize just how good your own life really is as well as encourage single parents who think they just can't make it. I feel every minister or counselor needs this book added to their library. The information contained about increasing your buying power without another job is wonderful. I recommend every homemake that has the opportunity should purchase this book.

This book was great for helping us plan our Bat Simcha. We purchased it even before our baby was born - before we knew the baby would be a girl. It provided many great ideas for creating either a Bat Simcha or a more personalized bris. We could not have planned such a meaningful ceremony without the help of this book.

I initially bought this book for friends with a newborn daughter. However, on the long flight home I began to read it for myself and was instantly taken in by the well-constructed and detailed case the author brings forth. The celebration of birth is a magnificent and unique experiece and should be shared by all in a special way regrdless of the child's gender. This book goes a long way to giving the reader many ideas that are delightful and inspiring without being 'new-agey'or 'preachy'. I highly recommend this read to anyone who has a baby daughter, baby boy, or no baby at all. This is an essential read for exploring modern ideas in traditional ceremony.

This is the best possible resource for parents of new baby girls who want to welcome them in a Jewish way. I found it extremely helpful. My wife and I felt somewhat confused, unsure of how to put a welcoming ceremony together for our new daughter, and this book took us through the process, step-by-step. It has an incredibly wide selection of readings, poems, blessings, prayers and songs from which to choose. Now we also give it as a baby gift to every new parent of baby girls we know.

an organic classic in the making, a must for your shelf

Review Date: 2001-04-27
The introduction opens with, "Mazal Tov, You've Had a Baby Girl!" Everybody is familiar with a bris, or brit milah circumcision ceremony -- and in current practice, a festive celebration, for healthy baby boys on their eighth day after birth. But what do you do when you have a daughter? What are they, chopped liver? Since the early 1970's, some Jewish parents have been celebrating their daughters in original ways (Ezrat Nashim published the first ceremonies in 1977, and the havurah and renewal movements wrote about theirs starting around 1973). Debra Nussbaum Cohen, a resident of Park Slope Brooklyn, and mother who has known the joy of birth and the pain of loss, has created this essential guide to new and traditional ceremonies with which to welcome your new daughter to the world, the covenant, and the Jewish people. It will be a welcome addition to your Jewish bookshelf and your life. Consider this: what you create today will be a "tradition" for your descendants! Cohen started collecting organic Simchat Bat ceremonies when she was pregnant with her first child. For your Simchat Bat ceremony and celebration, she includes readings, poems, specialized readings for adoptions, blessings, prayers (in Hebrew, English transliterations and translations), history, songs, and rituals. It is an inclusive book that has sample ceremonies also crafted for adherents to traditional Orthodoxy, traditional Sephardic rite, contemporary rites, contemporary Orthodox, humanism, and modren mikveh rites. Part One consists of about two dozen pages that introduce you to welcoming ceremonies and Jewish tradition, including the idea of covenant, brit milah, the custom of gomel, and that of a new father being called to the Torah to recite blessings, announce the birth, and pray for his wife's recovery. Part Two consists of about four dozen pages on seriously practical considerations for your ceremony. It includes chapters on how to involve your non-Jewish loved ones or spouse, if necessary (through acknowledgement and readings); what to do in cases of adoption and cross-cultural adoption (remember, Moses was an adopted child, and Mordechai was probably an adoptive parent); and gay and lesbian parenthood. Part Three focuses on planning the event, creating programs, sanctifying the space, and deciding when to have the Simchat Bat (eighth day, 30th day, etc.). Part Four contains over 150 pages of sample ceremonies, and hundreds of readings and elements from which you can pick and choose. It includes selections for welcoming, naming, prayers of thanksgiving, parental blessings, acrostics, psalms, readings for relatives and friends, blessings for wine and bread, and rituals for brit nerot (light), brit mikvah (immersion), brit rechitzah (footwashing/handwashing), brit tallit (enfolding her into the covenant), brit kehillah (community), brit melach, and brit havdalah (transitions). The book succeeds so well, one wishes all the babies were girls (or maybe some things can be borrowed for future boys).

"Change the Way You Think" is certainly a book that is much needed for this season and timeframe the Body of Christ is embarking upon. The underlying and main message throughout this book remained the same. If the reader can grasp hold to the contents within the pages of this book their lives will forever be changed. Author Tillery makes it very clear that if we become free in our minds, we can become free in every area and aspect of our life. ~That is powerful.~ I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience all that God has in store for them!

I would sum up Pastor's book with one verse that he highlights in Chapter Five from the Apostle Paul. In Ephesians we are prayed for that God would give us a Spirit of wisdom and understanding so that we may know Him more. It is through this understanding and knowing of Christ that we are able to enter into a new dimension, says Mr. Tilery. His mention of the Seven-fold annointing on page 13 of his book, which rested upon Jesus and which should rest upon us as we grow in Christ, encouraged my soul with a mind-altering flame. He remindes me to change my thinking in that "[Iam]seated in heavenly places with Christ" as Ephesians reveals. I have been most encouraged to recall and to not forget my identity in Christ. You have refreshed my soul with "noble thoughts" and I recommend this book to any new or old believer still unsure as to who you are in Christ.

Sincerely,

We've all heard about forgiveness but what power is there in it without "the blood"? This is an exceptional book that addresses the subject probably few people of today have even heard about. It is written in an easy to understand manner that will help any person whether Christan or not to understand the difference between the blood of Christ and just anyone's blood. This is a must read for anyone interested in eternal life through the blood of Christ. You will read it more than once in your lifetime and still glean new insight each time you refer to.

There are many chapters that he expands on what GOD has done to bring us closer to HIM and why these things occurred. I found one statement very profound in the chapter Chemistry of Tears. Dr. De Haan state that "tears are the distillation of our soul" the book is full of such gold nuggets.

If you have found it hard to reconcile Gandhi's deepest connections to his Hindu nonviolence being Christ's Sermon on the Mount and yet Christians saying Gandhi isn't "saved" this book will help. Andrews is a real practitioner and the lives of hundreds of people here in India's slums and in the boarding homes of Brisbane tell of this humble man's greatness. This book is for all those who are as turned on by Christianity as they are by the idea of their grandparents doing the bump and grind.

If you've ever been enchanted with the figure of Jesus and yet wouldn't touch Christianity with a bargepole because of the amount of BS, this book will resonate with your experiences and encourage and challenge you in living a life of radical justice and compassion.

This isn't just another undressing religiosity from the idea of following Jesus but Dave Andrews states Christianity must be thrown out!! (The Chapter "Christianity is Dead - Long Live Christi-anarchy" is amazing!) His brilliant uncovering of the brutality and violence of Christianity's histories is concise and easy to read and his deconstruction of ideological underpinning of Christianity is challenging.

This book will be hated by the religious and the status quo and written off, if not burned. But for those who earnestly seek a holistic spirituality of peace; it will become a close friend.

It returns the figure of Jesus to the marginalised and to the oppressed from the clutches of those who would use the symbols for control and oppression.

Read it... I dare you.

If I didn't respect the person so much that gave me this book I would never had read it. Until recently I've considered religion `the opium of the masses' and wanted nothing to do with this "Christ". Marx's critic is an excellent one; religion is a drug that stops the people from questioning the tyranny of the system. But after reading Dave Andrews I no longer associate the Jewish Messiah Jesus with Christianity. I now see that Christianity is a religion that has been irreversibly distorted by its neglect of the actual figure and teachings of Christ.

The most appealing thing about the book is that Andrews commitment to what he sees as the non-violence of Jesus is even carried into the way the book is written. He doesn't appeal to the reader to come over to where he stands and see it the way he does rather he (with the integrity of a true anarchist) is not a reformer but proposes a new open(!) construct that people can engage with total disregard for the drug that has met it's used by date: Christianity.

I have not yet finished but I would also recommend "Not Religion, but Love" which Andrew's also wrote. Both books are excellent.

Freakin' awesome!!

Read it... I dare you.

A clear, concise explanation of best practices and pitfalls for those
who would offer caregiving in a compassionate and Christ-like way.
This is no sappy, do-gooder book... and it's no "fix-it" message
either.

This is an excellent book that we have used to teach Christian Care Giving in three churches. It also serves as a text book for the Stephens Ministry basic course. The book is good on its own, but works best when its contents are discussed in a class seting.

The world needs people who care. This book is a practical manual for anyone who has ever felt uncomfortable comforting a friend or acquaintance.

Kenneth Haugk has written this book to address the real-life issues people confront when caring for others. Many find it easier to discuss sex than to discuss issues of their faith and religion. Even if we are comfortable sharing these matters, those with whom we deal may not be.

This practical, well-written book takes the reader beyond theories about the integration of psychology and theology. It strengthens and re-enforces your call to care for those about who you care.

The real Holy Grail

How many of us have walked past this book whilst browsing in a book shop without even spotting it much less buying it, reading it and appreciating it for what it is? I have had a taste of the clearlight and I have had a taste of bliss. I know on a deep experiential level that the instructions are true and precious beyond words. Imagine as a christian walking over a the holy grail and the body of christ buried below the floor and not knowing they were there, not that the finding would ever do you much good. Clearlight of Bliss is the real holy grail becasue it tells how enlightenment works and how to get there in precise detail without any of the usual new age mumbo-jumbo or contradictions or loose ill-defined language prevalent elsewhere. It is exact, crystal clear and written with complete authority. I do not believe any other author comes close. However, It can not be readily understood if the reader has not read other books nor can it be readily understood by anyone who has not practised highest yoga tantra - the search for the holy grail is long but the way is mapped out, illuminated and the guide has gone before you and come back for you and will be your friend and companion on the way. This book is more than a spiritual travalogue of the path it is a precise set of instructions set out for all to see.
Many people have read books like the 'Da Vinci code' or 'the holy blood, holy grail' and are riveted with tales of knights and secret organisations, some have made the grail their life long study and yet none of them has the slightest idea that the real grail can be found on a shelf in a bookstore just around the corner?

Detailed explanation of Tibetan Buddhist "Raja Yoga"

This is my favorite of the 5 Kelsang Gyatso books I've read. Many other Vajrayana (Tibetan Buddhist) books refer to or even provide some explanation of the Vajrayana psychic system (which seems to me to parallel the Hindu Raja Yoga approach). But, in his usual thorough manner, the author provides a very organized and detailed description herein. I attended one of his weekend gatherings and was impressed with him, though I've heard he's had some falling out with other Vajrayana lamas. His New Kadampa school is, I believe, a follow-up to the now defunct Kadampa school of Tibet which, I believe, the present Gelugpas (headed by the Dalai Lama) evolved from. It seems to me that the Gelugpa "Mahamudra" is VERY different from the Kagyu Mahamudra. The latter is quite similar in many respects to the Nyingmapa Dzogchen. The four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism are: Nyingmapa (the oldest based on 9th century translations), the Kagyu and Sakya (evolved about the same time), and the Gelugpa (the newest, I believe). Though the relatively recent Rime ecumenical movement attempted (pretty successfully) to provide cross-over teachings across the four schools. In any case, this book, while certainly not easy reading, provides a great source of information on esoteric, hard-to-find Vajrayana principles.

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso makes very difficult Buddhist concepts and practices crystal clear. To me, his books are indespensible. All of his books are like textbooks to be referred to time and again for reference. This and Clear Light of Bliss are great tantric Manuals.
Dakini Land is another Tantric work by this author and is highly rated. I will be purhasing this one shortly.

Topics covered in the reviewed book- Isolated speech, Isolated Mind,
Isolated Body. Description of lower tantras and Highest Yoga Tantra.
How to advance from Generation stage to completion stage. In short, another great book by this author.

Extremely clear explanation on Mahamudra

Based on oral teachings received by the author, as well as authentic works from great masters like Je Tsonkhapa and the first Panchen Lama, this book provides a detailed and precise explanation of the completion stage practices of Tantric Mahamudra. It takes the reader from the initial Meditation on the Subtle Body, through Inner Fire Meditation, to the final attainment of Full Enlightenment. Some of the topics include: Channels, Winds, and Drops, Clear Light and the Four Joys, Nine Mixings and the Two Mudras, the Nature of Mind, instructions to achieve Tranquil Abiding, Meditation on Emptiness, the Illusory Body, Clear Light and Union, and Resultant Mahamudra. Although the main purpose of this book is to explain the advanced practices of Mahamudra, students of different levels will benefit from the clear and practical explanations and instructions on many aspects of Vajrayana Buddhism. These include foundational issues, like how to develop meditative concentration, and how to meditate on emptiness. It also answers question like "what causes the dream body to enter the gross body when we wake from the dream state?" And on to instruction on how to mix with the Truth Body, Enjoyment Body, and Emanation Body during death. One gets as much out of this book as one is capable of, and cannot help but being inspired by it. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche has been residing and teaching in the West for more than twenty years, transmitting ancient wisdom to the modern world. A fully accomplished Tantric Master, he wants this book to especially benefit the Western Dharma practitioners. First published in 1982, this book is already a classic. The writing is simple and direct. The explanations and instructions are extremely clear, leaving nothing to guesswork. Especially valuable for the practitioners, are the superb and unparalleled descriptions of the inner states. Making this book more than just a philosophical discourse or a reference, but a veritable guide.

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's Clear Light of Bliss, gives extensive instructions on the generation stage and completion stage of Secret Mantra, the most profound and powerful teachings Buddha ever gave. Geshe Kelsang explains in great detail how we can generate a deeply peaceful mind and achieve powerful concentration by harnessing the subtle energy system within our own body. Utilizing this energy source, we can meditate powerfully and effectively on the true nature of reality, destroying the ignorance that prevents us from experiencing the supreme joy of permanent happiness and freedom from suffering.

I recommend this book to anyone that is searching for a deeper explanation of the inner-workings of our energy and how it can be used to improve our meditation practice and our minds so that we can be of greater benefit to others. These are advanced instructions so I would not recommend this book to someone who has no familiarity with Tantra at all. For a great introduction to Tantra I would recommend one of Geshe Kelsang's other books on the subject, Tantric Grounds and Paths.

This book is comprehensive, easy to read, and based on a sound theoretical and evidentiary base. It is hard to find a text that assists clinicians to bridge the gap between meeting the client and implementing a suitable intervention. This book not only does this, but does so in a way that is respectful of the client, the clinician, and the diversity of excellent clincial formulation frameworks available.

Dr. Ingram's book is an essential part of each therapist's library. It is the complete guide to case formulations and conceptualizations. Dr. Ingram has an amazing way of presenting her clinical hypotheses and how they are incorporated in therapy, and in turn the role they play in creating therautic goals and interventions. It is a must-read!!

Without question this is the essential "psychological encyclopedia from A - Z" to have on your bookshelf. Dr. Ingram provides useful and effective tools for any therapist; no matter the orientation, client population or years in the field. As a recently graduated MFT Intern, I continuously refer to Dr. Ingram's Problem Oriented Method. Each and every chapter is full of helpful and expansive information and the Core Clinical Hypotheses target all relevant issues with which clients present. This makes a great gift for your therapist friend. I have and will continue to highly recommend Clinical Case Formulations to all of my colleagues.
