Australia's CSIRO is one of the world's largest governmental scientific and engineering organisations. Sadly, few people fully appreciate its achievements in several fields of scientific endeavour. While this might be understood for non-Australians, it is also true for Australians. Collis tries to remedy this with a narrative of CSIRO's history.

Pre-eminent amongst these is radio astronomy. By dint of sheer geography, Australia's competition for observing the southern sky are some observatories in South America and South Africa. In this branch of astronomy, decades of investment in telescopes at Mt Stromlo and Siding Spring and in training astronomers has made Australia world-class. Reflecting this, a radio telescope graces the cover.

Other fields include agriculture and botany. Keying off the large agricultural sector and its needs. Related to this has been CSIRO's sponsorship of extensive water management research. Needed for a dry continent.

good but not great

I haven't taken my trip yet so I can't judge the recommendations or the accuracy of the details. I also bought "Rick Steves' Germany and Austria 2008" (which I think is near-great), so I will highlight Fodor's strengths. This book is well-organized. It's easy to quickly find what you want: Use the thumb tabs to get in the right region, then thumb through looking at the orange page and section headings. The font styles and symbols are easy to read. The maps are excellent. The sightseeing map location numbers are repeated by the sight descriptions. The "Where to Stay & Eat" maps are similar but the location numbers are not carried over to the description section. There are more recommendations for hotels and eating places than in RS. For Munich, they are subdivided by neighborhood. The menu guide translates ingredients such as meats and vegetables. Also this book probably covers every town that a tourist might want to see in Bavaria (more than you see in the Table of Contents) while RS covers only the "best". RS is much better for describing the sights, history, and practical details such as the transportation systems, but I think Fodor's will be a good supplement.

Explaining the Devil's Mother
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-05
An introductory portrait of this talented author sets the tone of this lovely book on page x of its introduction. His slightly raffish pose overlooking the southernmost point of mainland Ireland prefaces a splendid and colourful vista of the country's best of the west. Of course as everyone knows this is a wild and beautiful area, where farmers still carry their peat in wheelbarrows (Connemara), and stone walls are uniquely crazy (the Burren). Ireland's entire population is still less than Puerto Rico, though it is almost eight times its size. Its fiordlike coastline, and imposing mountains are wonderfully described with a storyteller's flair, a gentle touch, and often a winking eye. He lets you feel the flowers underfoot in County Clare, but doesnt talk about the ticks lurking in the bracken at the foot of Slieve Elva. He tells you of the music in the pubs, but doesnt say that a foreign fiddler can walk in to some such a pub, and be offered a fiddle hanging on the wall, so warm is the welcome. His love of the tunes is on the page... the text is interspersed with lines of musical notation (like Walter Starkie's Raggle Taggle) from Macgillycuddy's Polka to Old Nag You Have Killed Me. He speaks personally of almost losing it on the forbidding high ridges of Mweelrea, a truly imposing mountain, and he is poetic in chronicling the godawful tale of the starving, ragged band that was turned back not that many years ago by the heartless Poor Law guardians at Delphi Lodge.

I just came back from following in some of his footsteps. The book was a true and constant pleasure, and got me a pint or two of Guinness into the bargain from trying on a few of his tales. Among his best stories, not well known apparently (so there is still possibly more guiness awaiting the telling) is the one about the true naming in Gaelic of the Devil's Mother, but you'll have to get the book for that.

Fascinating revelation on how medicine is developed.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-10
(if this is the book by Robert Steele) This book was most enlightening. I am not a student of medicine or psychology but I have to say that I found this book most enlightening. I had no idea how psychology was founded as a science(I'm sorry I really think it is a pseudoscience) and I did not know that it was based mostly on lies perpetrated to aggrandize a career or ego. Shame, shame. No wonder the Doctors who hold so tightly to their much paid for licenses and degrees get upset to discuss in detail their knowlegdge. The common layman knows better. That's what they are afraid of. Does anybody out there actually practice according to the Hippocratic oath. Steele does a great job presenting it the way it was. If you like to know the absolute unbiased truth about academia and its supposed great minds - read this book. It will give you great insight. My bet, Ayn Rand had this book in mind when writing portions of Atlas Shrugged.

"Hammering at the Doors of Heaven" by Christine Schneider

Review Date: 2000-06-20
In this second novel in the "The Fires of Faith Series", Christine Schneider takes the reader 25 years further into the 11th century. Through an outstanding development of the personal and religious lives of her characters, the author weaves a captivating tale of love and the search for personal peace. Christine's excellent command of the history of this time period enables the reader to walk alongside the characters as they toil under the shadow of the church and the ruling classes. Characters of both low and lofty social status struggle in their efforts to obtain healing and atonement from the church. As their guilt prods them to undertake religious works and discipline, they are confronted with choices that will not only dictate their lot in life, but also the eternal destiny of their souls. The author's ingenuity in developing an unpredictable plot makes this novel a captivating and inspiring read.

Zee one and only German business book you will ever need
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1997-10-10
Very concise summary of business and management topics from the German perspective. If your attention span is as short as a Sunday comic strip, you will like it.

Each topic is built like Arnold Schwarzenegger: powerful, yet compact and scientifically engineered with a distinct German accent. The bad side; the subjects are told with the same amount of humor as Arnold displayed in "Conan the Barbarian".
The Germans have a knack for maintaining the discipline of getting to the academic bottomline without starting to ramble. But this did not come easy: The beginning editor, Professor Grochla either died or retired or both during the process and it took more than 10 years to complete the books, sort of a biblical comparison.

Amazing breadth of related topics.

Not for how-to fans, browsing the mall bookstore for get-rich-quick recipes, but an excellent reference, especially for students of the subject who don't want to look through tons of books, but prefer one-stop-knowledge shopping. Sort of the business book version of the Kelloggs variety pack. $250 seems kind of pricey, but think of all the other business administration and management books you don't have to buy anymore...

Although this book is biographical based on documentation, it reads like a novel. I always thought the seeds for WW II were sown after WW I but you can find them in this book at the end of the 19th century. Herzl is a very interesting character and Amos Elon brings him to life.
