I have this book right on the table where I drink coffee in the morning. While I'm sitting down drinking coffee, I open up this book to look at the beautiful illustrations and consise, but to the point descriptions of various mammals and their habits. This booklet is both informative and easy to understand. It is appropriate both for kids and for adults. If you are into animals, like I am, this is a great companion at the coffee table.

.

If your kids enjoy the nature programs on cable TV, they'll love this book.

Beautifully and accurately illustrated, the accompanying text is authoritative and educational. Just as importantly (if books are to compete with TV) it is also very entertaining.

The layout of "Mammals" follows the zoological classifications of the various "Orders" such as carnivores and marsupials. It even includes a section on the monotremes, those egg laying exotic mammals from Australia, namely, the platypus and echidna.

This book is a refreshing change from the typical TV nature show where animals and their behaviour are often anthropomorphised. You know the thing ...... " Bwana the baboon beats his chest boastfully after his latest conquest".

The highlight of the book is a four page panoramic fold out depicting the scene of the annual mass migration of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles across the African plains.

This book provides an ideal launching pad for those children who are keen to learn about the animal kingdom.

A beautiful and informative book.

This is indeed an appealing and easy to read book. The illustrations are beautiful and the text interesting and very educational. The layout is good. I would have loved having this book to use when I was a teacher. Particularly informative for adults and students alike are the "Fast Facts" which give a description in a nutshell, including conservation status; "Would You Believe?" with interesting trivia; and "Where in the World?", giving maps to show habitat. Along with correct information, the book dispels misinformation. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the warm blooded creatures who share our planet.

I am completely delighted with "The Little Guides" series. The format is extremely user friendly, and each guide is packed with useful and interesting information. I enjoy reading them, but my 6 year old daughter gives them the most use. While the guides are written at an adult level, there is plenty that she can read and understand. I currently own "Sharks," "Birds," "Mammals," "Space," "Whales," and "Flowers."

"Mammals" contains two parts; the first part gives an overview of the world of mammals, comparing the different characteristics (eyes, ears, feet, etc.) of mammals. Part two is packed with illustrations (over 500) and information about the rich variety of mammals that live on the earth. Each entry contains information about the animal characteristics, food, young, habitat, as well as close relatives.

This guide is packed with useful information, and is a great resource of adults as well as children!

Excellent source of information about your 12-volt system. Explains things in plain English, you don't have to be an electrician to understand the contents. If you have a trailer, toy hauler, or motorhome with a 12-volt system, get it and keep it in the RV. You'll be glad you did!

for a long time now, i was looking for a "start from scratch" book in understanding auto electronics. a book with illustrations that actually explains how it works. this book is a great introduction, a must buy if you really want to know the fundamentals. even though it's about RV's too, it tells you all you need to know about autos.
the more you read, the better you understand what you read.
i now know how the battery really works, know what it really does, what the altenator does. i know about switches, sensor, actuators and solenoids now. at first you you need time to grasp the concept, but it gets easy to understand very quickly. 5 stars.

It's already paid for itself.

Dr Tho's book contains compelling propositions that address many anxieties in managing risks in the ITO exercise. The risk management methods proposed for the supplier as well as the buyer of outsourcing services is new (and I am a practitioner is this area for over a decade). We have used the method he proposes in our current outsourcing project with tremendous success and response. Highly recommended reading and a must before starting a IT outsourcing endeavour!

Dr Ian Tho has expounded both the basics of ITO as well as risk management very well in this book. The concept of the risk dimension signature he refers to has certainly added significant value to our ITO endeavour with our suppliers. The fundamental concepts he refers to are invaluable. Some of the theory he mentions are controversial but have also served to extend our ideas. This has been a real help!!

I want to recommend this book to anyone who is attempting to work an on IT Outsouricng exercise. The examples given are a little complex but it is worth every minute spent to understand. The Risk Dimension Signature the author proposes is exactly what we needed. The writing style could, however, be clearer.

I do research in machining at the University of New Hampshire. This book is the essential resource that all of my graduate students refer to on a regular basis. I recommend it for anyone doing research in the machining field. I would also recommend Tlusty's book, "Manufacturing Processes and Equipment" as a second essential resource.

An essential aid for the serious production engineer

Due to my job I am forced to read a lot of technical literature. I never got as much technical up-to-date information explained in such an intelligible way. Compared to other books dealing with manufacturing processes (which are mostly written by scientists in a very, very scientific way), in this book you've got the impression that the author virtually tells you the modern fundamentals of manufacturing. This makes this book easily understandable. Nowadays, High Speed Machining is well established in manufacturing. The future will bring High Performance Machining which means that the metal removal rates are significantly higher at high cutting speeds. As far as High Performance Cutting is concerned, this book covers also the theories of the dynamic behaviour of the cutting process. Therefore, chatter is of great importance. The author explains the two present "Chatter Theories" in detail and enables the reader to perform his own calculations on process stability. I strongly recommend this book to all engineers and students of mechanical engineering who want to know the latest scientific results explained in a comprehensible way. This book is a must in the bookcase.

I had the great fortune of taking a course with Dr. Altintas at the University of British Columbia and I have to say that he is very thorough in his teaching methodology.

This was the textbook for the course and we covered most of it... I have to say that the book is very thorough and really teaches you in a practical way. The contents are very up-to-date and full with his own research results (which are cutting-edge). Also, the book's price has been kept very reasonable so that it is "student friendly".

Kids finally will get what a "birds eye view" means! The book flows nicely from creating a map of Penny's owner's bedroom...to a larger and larger scale. Leads itself to children being able to create their own maps of their bedroom or classroom...then once they have that down your true cartographers will emerge and challenge themselves on a greater scale.

"...a map is a picture of someplace from above. It's like flying over that spot in an airplane."

This book uses clear language and illustrations to introduce maps to young children. Starting from her bedroom, Lisa maps her and Penny's (her dog) world starting with the most familiar and moving out.

Concepts include using a key, mapping to scale and using a map to give directions.

Your children may be inspired to map their own world.

This book is a wonderful, colorful book that is very well written and is a great plot line.
Lisa's class at school is learning all about maps and how to use them. As a project Penny has to make a map of her own. Lisa maps out her world and the world of her dog Penny. Children are introduced to terms such as map title, key, symbols, compass rose and scale.

What did you like or not like about the book?

The pictures featuring the main character Lisa and her dog Penny are colorful and entertaining.

I would recommend this book to parents and teacher to share with children in grade 2-4. It's very useful tool in teaching basic geography.

The legends help to show why they are so important in map-making. This is a wonderful guide to introduce children to maps and also to use as an "template" for creating your own maps.

It has the best information I've seen yet that indicates, through scientific research that THC helps stop or reduce pain...something the herb consumers have known for a long time. Interested in medicine such as Marinol for pain? Get this book, then give it to your doctor. THC Delta-9, is now schedule III, prescribable by doctors for "other than approved label use"....

A useful reference about the facts on marijuana

Review Date: 2000-09-23
This book is the result of a $900,000 two year study of the known facts on marijuana, including a review of recent literature and interviews with patients. It was requested by "Drug Czar" McCaffrey after medical marijuana had become legal in California. No doubt McCaffrey was hoping the Institute of Medicine would come out against it. However, when finally released in March 1999, the Institute of Medicine report not only confirmed that marijuana has legitimate medical uses and is remarkably safe, it also demolished the myths that marijuana leads to harder drugs or that it causes "amotivational syndrome".

Did you know that 32% of all nicotine users develop a psychological dependency on their drug, as do 15% of all alcohol users versus only 9% of marijuana users? The book is full of useful facts like these.

If you want to get involved in the debate about what drug policy will serve us best you should read this book. Thank you, Mr McCaffrey :-)

Excellent collection of NASA documents for serious enthusias
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-04
World Spaceflight News has done serious spaceflight enthusiasts a big favor with this compiliation of over 10,000 pages of NASA documents related to Mars flights. Unlike most space-related CD that are heavy on multimedia and fancy interfaces but lacking in information, this CD is pure meat......a virtual library of documents, many dificult to impossible to obtain outside of large university libraries, jammed into a single disk. The CD consists of a score of NASA documents, some quite technical, on recent Mars probes in Adobe PDF format. Additionally, there are image galleries (also unfortunately in PDF format rather than JPEGs, which prevent transfer to photo editing programs for cropping and printing)of about 250 photos from Viking and Mars Pathfinder and a few Hubble and Global Surveyor photos as well.

The bulk of the CD consists of lots of NASA documents related to the Viking, Mars Pathfinder/Global Surveyor, and the ill-fated Mars Polar Lander/Climate orbiter programs (the CD was produced prior to the loss of both spacecraft). Documents related to the now-cancelled Mars 2001 programs are also included. Especially valuable are the Viking, Mars Pathfinder/Global Surveyor and Mars 98 press kits, the out-of print NASA history of the Viking project, "On Mars", the Mariner 4 final project report, and the complete abstracts (many one or two page mini-articles with photos)of the 1999 Mars conference which details current scientific thinking on Martian geology, climatology, and potential for life.

Reproduction quality is generally comparable to the original documents (although many original NASA reports, especially early ones, were printed rather poorly to begin with, while more recent ones are of high quality)and the photos in the image gallery are excellent.

Although many of the documents are available on the Internet, many are not, and the sheer sizes of these documents could take a long time to download over ordinary phone lines; here they can load in seconds.

While I would not recommend this collection for those who are only casually interested in Mars exploration, for serious enthusiasts of space, historians and potential authors, this collection is invaluable if not essential. WSN deserves high praise for bringing us this collection, and one hopes they continue archiving and preserving official NASA history at an affordable price.

For me, the CD contains required Mars research information as a sci-fi writer, which previously took weeks to months to gather. It is in a somewhat awkward PDF format, but it works! The format has it's conveniences, like having needed references available right on your PC. Some of the data I had never seen before, and some is a bit technical, which means just something new to learn. If you're new to reading some of this sort of data, it will be rough going in certain parts. Would have given anything to have had this in the days of my research instead of using using 28k / 56k modem, and NASA public information packages, required to get me through my first sci-fi novel. For whatever reason you feel you need a great collection of essential Mars research facts, this is it! It seems to be required reading these days for writing sci-fi about Mars. Ronald Reed Jackson

Excellent collection of NASA documents

Review Date: 2000-06-04
World Spaceflight News has done a great service for serious hardcore space enthusiasts as well as for historians in releasing this CD-ROM collection of NASA documents. Unlike most space-related CDs, this is not heavy on multimedia and sparse on information, instead it is a virtual library of NASA reports and documents, loaded with information, some quite technical. The bulk of the CD is several thousand pages of official NASA documents related to recent Mars exploration reproduced in Adobe PDF format. Especially useful are the press kits for the Viking, Pathfinder, Mars Global Surveyor and the ill-fated Mars 98 projects. Also included are the official NASA history of the Viking Project, "On Mars", and the complete abstracts of a 1999 Mars conference. There are many additional documents, including quite technical documents related to the Mars 98 projects. Topping it off is a series of PDF image galleries of about 250 images from Viking, Pathfinder, and Global Surveyor.

Reproduction quality is fairly comparable to the original NASA documents (some of which were poorly printed to begin with while others are of excellent quality) and quite suitable for printing if you are willing to burn through many printer cartridges. Many if not most of the documents are out of print and very hard to obtain, although some can be downloaded from the Web. However, the enormous file sizes of some of these documents would take hours to download unless you have access to T-1 lines, while this CD allows you to access the documents in seconds.

While I would not recommend this CD to those with only a casual interest in Mars exploration, after all, NASA documents are rather dry, this is an invaluable resource for serious space enthusiasts, as well as for authors and historians studying the history of Mars exploration.

World Spaceflight News has done an invaluable service in making these documents available and one hopes that they continue with additional CDs.

Outstanding. This one word sums up how this book impresses me. I served with the 8th TBS at Phan Rang, Vietnam and, sadly, took part in stripping the birds of weapons for their last journey home. This airplane and the wonderful people I served with have a special place in my memory and my heart. Mr. Mikesh has done a wonderful job of capturing the full life of the Canberra with terrific pictures and insightful facts and details of this airplane. Since he flew the bird for quite some time he was able to flesh out the aircraft's story instead of simply compiling a book based on facts and figures. His book brought back some wonderful memories for me and I am grateful Mr. Mikesh took the time to write it. If you have any interest in military aircraft, get this book. You won't be disappointed.

To those who flew and maintained it, the B-57 was a way of life. Through its nearly fifty year lifespan, the B-57 Canberra was unarguably one of the most used - workhorse formats for the Air Force . Level bomber, nuclear weapons delivery, dive bomber in Vietnam, reconnaisance, spy plane, tow target, show piece, electronic counter-measures, even a try at transportation and inflight refueling. This book is the complete guide to the B-57 Canberra from inception to disposal of the aircraft. Here are the stories of its development, how the Air Force used it and the men who flew it and how some of them died.

I found this book to be very exciting. I grew up as a child of an Air Force officer and enjoyed the life of being around aircraft, uniforms and all that goes with this life. I found the book to be very knowledgeable and informative. It is accurate and has many subjects that at the time were not allowed to be discussed openly (EX:The Patricia Lynn). I discovered this book by chance (I was looking for a birthday gift for my father)and was very pleased and surprised that it had a photograph of my father, who also was not aware of this book or of him being in the book. My father talks about alot of the history in this book and shares alot of the stories of the people he knows and of certain events. To the author, thank you for writing and taking the time to reware these men and publish what alot of people did and still do. I also find this book to be a good example of what the Air Force offered and offer today.

This book is uniquely geared to the sales engineer role, not to general sales reps. Yet anyone selling technology products will learn from the detailed info on techniques and step-by-step processes for the technical sales cycle. Case studies and exercises supplement the book's discussion with real-world perspective. However, the book gives only a brief, passing reference to the role of marketing to support sales activity--an understanding that is valuable to every SE.

As a professional technical sales consultant I enjoyed this book. I particularly like the real world examples and case studies for "tricky" sales situations. Even though I think of myself as a seasoned professional I learnt some new techniques and approaches from the book; especially in how to give a technical demonstration of a piece of software.

PS. I met one of the authors who was presenting at a product launch a few weeks ago in New York and got my book autographed.

Essential tool that any SE be they new, experienced, or a manager should read cover to cover.

I was challenged a few months ago to explain in detail what makes up a Sales Engineer/Solutions Consultant? What does the role entail and what do you need to know to be successful? Well, if I'd read this book before that exercise then I'd have simply asked the technical trainer I was briefing to read this book!

Mastering Technical Sales, not to be mistaken with the similar sounding Making The Technical Sale by Greenwald & Milberry, is an excellent practical book that covers the needs of not just new SE's but also provides advice and knowledge for the more experienced SE, SE manager or even executive tasked with creating and maintaining an SE organisation. What I found particularly useful were the real world examples of both successful and unsuccessful practice - these lend a level of credibility and relevance to the material that perhaps the Greenwald & Milberry book lacks. (Btw, this is also a fine & very relevant book for any SE). I also particularly liked the chapter organization of summarizing the chapter goals, presenting the material, summary and then presentation of a skill-building summary for both the new SE and the experienced SE.

The book tackles pretty much every aspect of a typical SE's life from what type of person does it take and why do we do this? What do I need to do to be successful? What resources should I call upon? When? How? When & how to use executives. How to leverage corporate resources be they product management, engineering, technical support, marketing, or external resources such as partners. I thought the section on 'crossing over to the dark side' was particularly relevant and accurate as it covers the risks, the rewards and the reality of whether this is something that an SE should consider or not and more importantly, why or why not?

The book covers all the standard stuff very comprehensively from the sales process itself, presentation skills & techniques, objection and competition handling plus the realities of how to manage the sale to avoid the pitfalls of demos, succumbing to technical trials & evaluations or being driven by your competitor's agenda. All excellent material and covered well with real war stories.

Whilst this isn't the cheapest book on the subject, I'd definitely consider it worth every cent. Highly recommended.

Mastering Technical Sales provides a terrific foundation for the newly-minted Sales Engineer, a growth vehicle for the developing journeyman, and rich source-book for the seasoned professional.

While there are numerous "sales methodology" books available today, nearly all focus on the sales people and provide little or no information for the Sales Engineer and others who address the technical sale portion of the overall sales process. Mastering Technical Sales focuses on this critical area and shares how to manage and execute technical sales tasks to enjoy the highest success rates, both in the sales process and in one's professional growth.

Advice to SE's: Buy it and read it.

Excellent book--be sure to get both volumes. Only wish I would have known about these a long time ago! The different chapters (one per person) make fabulous, quick read alouds that hold my almost-eight-year-old's attention beautifully, but keep me interested as well! Great mix of people from all over the world, both men and women.

Very interesting stories, well-written

I got this for my 8-yr-old son, but ended up reading it myself. I think I will read them with him, as some of the concepts may be over his head. It is still interesting for the stories alone, I'd just like him to really get some math education out of it. Not difficult to grasp for older children who are already introduced to algebra, geometry, etc.

This isn't the type of book you'll want to read all at once. Each story about an individual has different lessons, different concepts, that you'll want to discuss after reading. Great for home-schoolers or parents wanting to enrich their child's education.

Very happy with the book, now I've got to get Volume 1.

Great for adults and children

This is a great book for adults and children. My seven year old has me reading a chapter each night to her. The book illustrates the qualities required to be a great mathematician and has many interesting stories about them. My only wish is there were more chapters and mathematicians.

FANTASTIC!

A wonderful collection of short stories about mathematicians from many different time periods, including Pythagoras, Hypatia, Isaac Newton and 12 others. Makes great family reading, as the book is aimed probably for 9-12 year olds, but is definitely interesting on an adult level, too. Great for stimulating interest in mathematics, history and philosophy.
