Stay-alive information that is invaluable for every officer

Review Date: 1998-09-16
After one year on the force, my Sergeant gave me his personal copy of this book to read during the slow times of my graveyard shift. After I started, I literally could not put it down. I ran my Stinger flashlight battery down a countless number of late nights, alone in my beat reading, absorbing, and processing the information within this book. As I read the book I learned about different ways to safely approach vehicles at night, and during the day. The techniques taught in this book add to academy-taught methods, and are intended for officers who have mastered the "basics" and wish to add a tactical edge. This book teaches extensively about narcotics detection techniques, as well. Looking back now I can only wonder how many dope loads I would have busted if I had been equipped with this information earlier in my career. There are illustrations on almost every page of this text, some diagrams, some photos, and many charts. Some of the info and pictures in this book is disturbing, but it made me think. After I completed reading this book, I took it to the department and made numerous photocopies of some charts and diagram inside of the book, and now carry them on-duty with me during every shift. An example: one way that I use to determine if a suspect is lying to me is to ask him his social security number. The first three numbers of a persons social security number ca be easily tracked to only one state within the USA. For example, if he says 526-__-____, I look at one chart within this book. The chart says that 526 is from Arizona, so if he says that he has never been to Arizona, and is from Wisconsin, he is probably lying. The information in this book will really help you on the road, like it has helped me. It already has probably kept numerous officers alive...

The Best Criminal Patrol book Period.

Inspiring and Motivating, not only for smoking...

After reading the Tao of Quitting Smoking, I highly recommend this book, not only to those addicted to nicotine, but to anyone with an addiction. The most important thing about quitting an addiction/habit is preparing yourself not only physically but also mentally and spiritually. This book is excellent because it touches upon each facet necessary to end an addiction. There are assignments which one can do while smoking as well as a step-by-step process to achieving a smoke-free life.

This book is written in a simple, easy-to-read style not only for adults, but also for young teens. I, especially love that the Author has had first-hand experiences struggling with wanting to quit and in his book, we travel with him on his journey to becoming a nonsmoker.

The book inspires one to achieve their highest potential in believing in yourself that you can do anything that you set your mind to do. He reminds me of Dr. Phil with his no nonsense approach.

A note from the Author.

Hi, I was a 2-3 pack a day smoker when I quit cold turkey. I developed this book from my experiences and difficulties with quitting smoking. My book will help you unlike any other, being that my book heals your soul. Give it a try, but remember, the Tao pronounced (Dao) of Quitting Smoking must be followed as written. It is a book that deals with your mind, body and spirit at different levels. This book is not a book that you can skim through pages or skip sections. The T.O. Q. S works on ending you association, craving, habit and addition to tobacco products. The book will help you understand why you began smoking, why you can't stop and the role Nicotine has on your brain. It is designed to facilitate a loathing towards tobacco. It is difficult to quit smoking if you still have positive associations with the product. Nicotine is a drug. It is not your fault that you are addicted to tobacco products. Please visit my site at toqs.com to learn more.

This book is great for all ages: buy it for yourself, a friend or a love one. Smoking is a slow suicide. It is also dangerous as second-hand smoke. End your addiction with the Tao of Quitting Smoking. Buy my book, read the information from my website, go to the links, join a quit smoking support group and stop paying the tobacco companies your hard earn money to cause you harm.

Good luck on your path to quitting smoking forever. You CAN do it this time. The T.O.Q.S also helps your body deal with the cravings as well as help you with not gaining weight when quitting smoking

Thanks

Thanks to the Tao of Quitting Smoking by Joseph Weaver, my ten year, 1 pack a day addiction is over. I am not a spiritual person, so I was skeptical of buying a book which labels itself as the spiritual approach to quitting smoking. However, after reading this book, I realized the book is about much more. The secret of this book is to help the reader rid their misconceptions associated with Nicotine, Addiction, Tobacco and Second-hand Smoke. The book goes deeply into the root of a person's soul to discover WHY they allow themselves to smoke. The Tao of quitting smoking is a reader's own self analysis of actions, thoughts, habits and transformation.

What I loved about the book was the chapters, lessons and assignments were extremely short and I was able to smoke while reading the book. There are assignments that the reader must do as a smoker.

The book helps the reader get a grip back on being a conscious being with chapters such as...

Lessons of Simplicity
Non-Judgment
Fear and Courage
Free Will
Our existence on Earth

The book talks about nicotine and smoking in a scientific fashion with the chapters such as...
What is Nicotine
Addiction
Biological Replacement/Emotional Replacement and Constituents of Tobacco
Products and their Smoke
Why we smoke
Research and Statistics

The book also deals with replacing the chemical affects of Nicotine in the brains, such as using Nicotine as a mood enhancer or antidepressant. The bioactive nature of Nicotine cause many pleasure chemicals within the brain to keep the smoker addicted to Nicotine. The book teaches simple meditative-calming techniques to help the nonsmoker balance the effects of lack of Nicotine in the body. The book also teaches the reader to hate everything associated with smoking. It is this passion that helps the nonsmoker never to smoke again.

The book has a short and simple approach to helping one not gain weight when quitting which involves avoiding certain food groups, as well as exercising. I give this book an "A" on inspiring me enough to quit smoking as well as take back the control over my life in all areas. It is a complete self-help book about finding yourself again.

Great Book!

I read this book after trying to quit smoking several times. I have tried hypnosis, other quit smoking books, the patch, the pill and even seminars. I have finished reading the book one week ago. I can truly say that I will never smoke again. Why? Especially because it has been only a week. Well, I just know I will NEVER go back to smoking. The book helped me go inward and build the strenght I needed, so I can say. Smoking is a dead subject for me.

After reading this book, I woke up. The book have me the self control to say NO. The book has a lot of assignment and it takes about 10 days to read this book. You can't read the book in a couple of days. The worse part was when the book instructed the reader to switch brands of cigarettes. The book really helped me go inward and realize that I have the power. It also helped me to HATE tobacco. I highly recommend this book for any smoker, who is still smoking and thinking about quitting.

I thought The Third Season was a remarkable story about a grandfather's devotion to his little granddaughter. It is a story to touch your heart. And it makes us all wish we had a grandfather like that! This novel will wind around your heart just like Poppi is wound around Spice's tiny finger. This is truly a story to stir your emotions.

I don't generally like contemporary novels so this was a complete surprise, genuinely liking the book! I liked that there was a spiritual depth to the book that a reader could miss if just flying through. Cat (the heroine) found her relationship to God shallow when she was tried. I too found "the trauma" not as earth shattering as expected (maybe in the flesh we want something a little more sordid?) but having just gone through one of those faith testing years myself this novel was completely believable. She had God pigeon-holed and found out He wasn't "content" with the little area of her life she allotted Him. Ms John definitely gave her characters depth. I loved how Dominick came to believe I Christ. This is a GOOD book, well worth reading, emotionally satisfying as well for the romantics out there.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. I particularly liked the character of Cat St. Clair. Her relationship with God is genuine, as she learns to trust Him again after a traumatic incident. And her relationship with Dominick is also very intriguing, as they learn to center it around God. The only disappointment to me was the second part of the novel. The revelation of the truth behind the traumatic incident was a big let-down for me. After over 100 pages building up to the revelation, I expected something more interesting. But, overall, I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys Christian romances.

THis is a lovely romance. Traumatized by something that happened earlier in her life, Catherine St. Clair is sure she'll never be happy again. That's before Dominick D'Angelo enters her life. As their relationship progresses, Cat discovers something terrible about the man she's come to love and wonders if she'll ever be happy again. A must read!

For anyone looking to treat infertility disorders, I would highly recommend this book. The quality and sheer volume of information presented is quite impressive, and the same goes for her seminars. I would not suggest this book for anyone other than a TCM practitioner, as it is a professional text. The content is both highly specialized and should not be used by those without extensive training; besides, there are plenty of other introductory books that will give patients a more comprehensive view of TCM theory in an easily digestible format.

That said, this book is one of my favorites in the subject, and fully worth several times the purchase price!

I was referred to this book by a fellow friend who like me, is trying to conceive a baby over 40. This book talks with detail about how chinese medicine works and in particularly to help "strengthen" our reproduction systems. The information is very clear and detailed and can help anyone starting to explore the benefits of TCM. It enlightens the reader because it never dismisses the Western medical community, but talks about how the Eastern methods of TCM can enhance our already traditionally accepted practice of conventional medicine. It also talks about how TCM works well alone. However, it takes diligence and specialized practitioners to fully incorporate all of this info to practice. Finding a excellent Acupuncturist or Chinese doctor seems integral and the information is amass. I felt I learned quite a bit about Chinese medicine in just one night of reading, and I was already educated in many areas.

I couldn't put "Turnabout" down. Dr. Kirpatrick shares the details of her struggle with alcohol, and how she overcame her addiction. It's written with honesty and truth - no soft-peddling what alcohol can do to a person who is alcohol-intolerant.

She also wrote "Good-bye Hangovers, Hello Life", which was another page-turner. This companion book to "Turnabout" is a little less personal, and more of a self-help book for women who are struggling.

Both books changed my life, and I am grateful to Dr. Kirkpatrick for writing them. Her books are easy to read and her concepts are easy to grasp. She understands the alcohol-related issues that are unique to women.

She is offering a new way of recovery, based on 13 statements of Women for Sobriety that she developed to help her stay sober and now she is sending this message out to other women who want to stay sober and don't like to attend AA meetings. WFS is similar to AA but it is based on self-esteem statements that make a woman more competant in themselves. Definitly a new way of life to see things in a new light and move on with your life with out alcohol and drugs.

Edward Hobbs was an attorney, who was about to be disbarred for
transporting illegal drugs from across the border into America.
He pays a price of one-million dollars for freedom, but never realized
that wasn't enough. He was the boss of Jen Song, a legal secretary,
who was accused of killing him, and leaving his body on top of an
Albuquerque volcano. The fireworks were about to begin in Albuquerque
at the same time Jen falls, and cuts her hand on a sharp edge of
volcanic rock. The blood from her hand drips on the dead body of
Edward Hobbs, as she stares at the strangle marks on his neck, while
anticipating to make her first phone call. Jen becomes hysterical,
realizing that her dyslexia and Attention Deficit hyperactivity
Disorder were minor problems as compared to facing the gruesome
murder of her boss. During the impending investigation of Edward Hobbs,
former prosecutor Luna Cruz defends her only client, and friend,
Jen Song. The nightmare begins for Luna, while she uncovers a
conspiracy, involving lawyers and their connection to transporting
illegal drugs from across the border. The author creates a legal
thriller that becomes a masterpiece from his expertise in criminal
law through experience, combined with knowledge of the Southwest
detention centers. Jonathan Miller pulls no punches, while describing
the horror of a career in which he lives, and speaks pure truth as he
tells the story through reality. His unique background, keen sense of
humor, and detailed description of crime through the eyes of an insider,
makes quite an interesting read. There's never a dull moment, from the
beginning of an investigation of a brutal murder to the verdict. The
journey for Luna Cruz from Texas to Mexico adds more drama with a
twist and surprises, while she desperately attempts to put the
mysterious puzzle together, but the pieces don't fit. The dialogue
in this story is rich in color. The strange characters draw a picture of the Southwest detention centers, and
what goes on behind closed doors. A home for prisoners where there is
no mercy, whether your guilty, or possibly innocent. I would recommend
this book to all mystery lovers, who enjoy chilling stories that are
packed with drama. "Volcano Verdict" is as witty as "My Cousin Vinny."
Suspense blossoms like a flower throughout this thriller, as good as
it was in "Presumed Innocent." Jonathan Miller manages to light-up
the story, like fireworks on the fourth of July, and the volcano does
erupt!

Knocked my socks off - a super story, packed with surprises and twists - and, because the legal angle ran surreptitiously in the background, it didn't labour or get bogged down.

I experienced such a dichotomy reading this book I scarcely know where to begin. As I wrestled with whether to give this review three or four stars I considered the pros and the cons of Jonathan Miller's well-written legal thriller, VOLCANO VERDICT.

Pros: Miller's writing flows fluidly and easily; even better, his writing style reflects a great deal of wit and a keen sense of humor. This makes for a very fun read. Miller is a criminal attorney, and his expertise comes through time after time, whether his characters attend hearings or file motions or issue subpoenas. And it's readily apparent Miller very much enjoys and appreciates Albuquerque and the Land of Enchantment.

Cons: There are numerous typos and other errors; this book is in dire need of a competent editor (not so cool, Cool Publishing). Some of the scenes are confusing, whether it be character placement or point of view. The book's protagonists, attorney Luna Cruz and her sidekick, Jen Song, sometimes say and do very masculine things (which points out the obvious; the author is a male). In the book's climactic scene, Luna doesn't resolve her own conflict--extenuating circumstances resolve it for her. And finally, there were a couple of other issues as the story concluded that really bugged me.

Miller has terrific talent; I look forward to reading his next book. VOLCANO VERDICT is a fun ride, warts or no warts.

It's good to see an alcoholic turn their life around, and even better to read how they did it. D.A. Dickens has seen the worst addiction has to offer, and I am sure many addicts/alcoholics can relate to his manifold troubles. They would definitely be interested in reading how Mr. Dickens picked up the broken pieces of his life before going on to begin true recovery. Three books later, his progress is duly noted. I recommend this book for anyone caught in the cage of addiction.

I've been sober for 15 years and read things in this book that I SHOULD have heard in the rooms, but haven't. For one, the concept that sobriety and recovery are NOT the same. Quoting from the book: "Sobriety is a means to an end. That end is ongoing recovery. Abstinence is indeed the first step toward recovery, and it's the only way to prevent new fires from sparking to life. But alone, sobriety carries little weight" and "As recovery takes root we begin to feel more firmly planted in our sobriety, and a calming sense begins to settle over us. The desire to drink or drug diminishes and we begin to realize that we're going to be okay, that our growth is well underway, and that we need not be afraid. "

This begins a journey with the author through his own early recovery time in which he shares invaluable experience in just how to find this wonderful world of recovery. He touches on all aspects from the chemical imbalances that bring about alcoholism to the miraculous part that spirituality plays - and this from a self-admitted "questioner" of religion. Surely the old AA adage that, "Religion is for people who don't want to go to hell. Spirituality is for those who are there and want to get out." is relevant here. David Dickens brings us right along the pathway with him out of hell and into a productive life.

Voyage Into Recovery has also already been adopted as one of the suggested readings by the American Council on Alcoholism. I have no affiliation with that group, but do value their opinions.

I can't say enough good things about this book. The menus alone make the book worth the purchase price!!! If you can find it, buy it. The author knows what a pregnant woman needs to eat, and why, and what proper nutrition can prevent - eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, toxemia, underweight babies, poor breast milk production etc. This is a fabulous book. I read it first when my sister was pregnant in 1991. I've kept a copy ever since and given copies to several pregnant friends and relatives. Bravo!!!

When I was pregnant with my first child (25 years ago!) I read a gazillion books about all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. This book would be at the top of the list. The information about diet and nutrition for pregnant women (particularly in the prevention of toxemia) was easy to understand and backed by solid research/clinical observations. Assuming this edition is similar to the one I read, it also included a thorough list of the nutritional content of common foods.

Highly recommended!

Learn how to avoid toxemia (pre-eclampsia) in pregnancy. The main point is to eat salt and eat enough protein. The author's doctor husband did research for decades and cured toxemia by simply supplying the salt shaker and adding meat to the diet. Read the details. Get some recipes at the end of the book. Read example stories.
