An example of the diversity of astrology

I really enjoyed this book. The Buddhist philosophy was incorporated into astrology with tack. There is no lecturing, and it is thought provoking. The professional style makes the book highly readable and opens the subject up to people of different philosophical backgrounds without misrepresenting astrology. I am glad that this book is on the market. It reflects well on the system and is an example of what astrology should strive to be--a well thought out philosophy of life. I couldn't recommend the book more and I am not Buddhist.

BUDDHIST ASTROLOGY PIERCES THE VEIL OF MORTALITY

The introduction to Buddhist thought and philosophy is worth the price of this book. The astrological interpretations, given from this Buddhist perspective, offer peace and tranquility in the face of stormy life-situations and inner turmoil. The message which permeates these pages is: you are not mortal; your true being is one with life, not at odds with life. Buddhist Astrology--the book and the approach--pierces through the veil of an illusional mortality. Astrological consultations, whether through a personal astrologer or through a well-written book, ought to bring hope, peace, comfort to the seeker. These things are to be found here.

I have so enjoyed this book! The author gives a clear description of basic Buddhist philosophy in the first 5 chapters, including an inspired interpretation of a natal chart for the Buddha. Then he describes each of the 12 Houses and gives lively descriptions of the meaning associated with the moon, sun and planets. I took out my own chart to learn more about my own natal chart. The only negative criticism I have is that the book nowhere gives the symbols for the planets so I had difficulty reading my chart.
The book ends with a delightful biography of the author who, though born a Canadian, became a Buddhist monk , lived in Dharmsala, was taught by the Dalai Lama, did a 3 year retreat in a mountian cave and after 13 years was given permission by the Dalai Lama to give up his ordination and teach Buddhism in the West. His description of this life is fascinating.
There is a glossary of Buddhist terms,a bibliography.and an index - all things a good book needs!

real Buddhist Psychology integrated with Western Astrology

Review Date: 2003-03-12
The main author, Jhampa Shaneman has extraordinary Buddhist background including the traditional 3 years retreat of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism. From his biographical sketch at the end of this book (and his website) you know how devoted he is about his practice. Actually this what I was impressed the most.

Due to such kind of practices, as well as his knowledge, experiment and practices of Western Astrology, we can see in-depth perspectives applying Western Astrology to our mind, which is the core and source of our daily-life, past, present and future... Thus Astrology is useful to us in a very practical way. Western Astrology has been very close to western Psychology after Jung. However, this book presents Astrological Psychology with the deepest school of eastern Psychology... which is worth reading and thinking about.

One of the most special points in this book is that he tried to trace Buddha's birthchart out of records and we can find very reasonable and helpful information out of his interpretation of the chart, including tracing the time and inner-experience when Siddhartha (Buddha's name before he became enlightened) escaped from his palace and attained Buddhahood.

Jhampa's Buddhist teachers including Lama Yeshe and many greatest gurus of the century. The most famous western Tibetan scholars nowadays like Robert Thurman, Jeffery Hopkins, are about the same time or later as his beginning of studying. And he is also one of the few westerners permited by His Holiness Dalai Lama to teach all levels of Buddhism.

From his website, you will find more of his information:
http://www....-astrology.com/

Sorry that I cannot express well with all the good points of this book. I will try to tell more later.

This interpretation of astrology chart readings from a Buddhist point of view is very interesting and insightful. Buddhist philosophy and application to daily living and understanding how the underlying influences of astrology affect us was most thought provoking. I really enjoyed this book and felt that I learned practical applications from it to use in my own attitude towards self, others and understanding samsara.

A treasure trove of deep-sky observation

Any college-level collection strong in astronomy must have this atlas of double stars: it pairs a lay-flat spiral binding with spine letters for maximum library efficiency and practical use, it offers the first modern star atlas focusing on double and multiple stars, and labels near 2,000 pairs with plot points and observatory designations in a treasure trove of deep-sky observation.

Great for double star nuts!

Here is an effort that deserves a standing ovation! Thirty seconds into opening this book I found myself grinning and purring like a cheshire cat. A very nice star atlas indeed. Maps are large and clear, and double star notation is versatile and up to date (see p3 for key to different naming conventions- worth the price of the book there).
This book is a great complement to Sissy Haas' Double Stars for Small Telescopes (one of my favorites). In fact, I spent an afternoon cross checking Centaurus and Crux and found great correspondence between the two books with no errors.

My only complaint is that the index of double stars is presented with R.A. as the dominant field. That makes the tables not too user friendly for planning observation sessions without extensive flipping around. I mean, don't we all plan double star sessions per constellation instead of by R.A.?! It would be super nice if this info was made available on a CD to the book. That would truly make things easy!

This is an excellent and well produced atlas, covering not only double starts, but also a selection of deep sky objects. My only gripe is that I wish it were hardcover, like Norton's (I rate it as superior on content, at least to the modern Norton's editions).

Since I finished the Herschel 1 list and am already well into the Herschel 2's, I was looking for another observing project to add to my goals. I've never really given double stars much thought since I split Epsilon Lyrae with my 8" reflector back in 1967. However, when I checked the Astronomical League (AL) list of observing challenges (or goals), the double star list just jumped out at me. Why not? The 100 on the list are well within range of my 16" scope, and I can even do many of them on crummy nights. With that in mind, I printed out the list.

My problem with that AL list is that some of them are not easy to find on either the Tirion or Megastar. I'm no wiz with coordinates, so between the obvious star names and hunting and pecking with the declination and right ascension numbers, I located most of them. However, the AL decided to list some of them with the Struve numbers. The Struve numbers? I guess that really brought out my ignorance of double stars!

I was in conversation with my friend, Roger Ivester and he mentioned he knew one of the authors (James Mullaney) of this new double star book. He told me the book would be coming out in a week or two and I should get it if I want to get serious about double stars. I ordered it and when the book arrived, I was not only pleasantly surprised, but in OCD hog heaven.

The book is well organized, has listings for over 2000 double stars, and includes all the Struve numbers. Every double listed is highlighted in green on the specialized Tirion charts that were specially drawn for this project. It didn't take me long to find all those odd doubles I couldn't locate with the regular Tirion or Megastar.

The book is spiral bound but the job is not some thrown together Office Depot project. It is professionally done. The charts are well thought out, though a little awkward if you are used to a regular Tirion.

After receiving this book, I can not only pursue the AL 100 list, but now I have over 2,000 more to find! All of them are in the range of 2.6" up to 14" scopes so my 16" sould work fine for all 2,000+ of them.

The book even smells good! If you are a double star enthusiast, or just want to add to your collection of reference books, this one is "da bomb." Highly recommended.

2,400 pairs(good for 2- to 14-inch telescopes) are labeled, mostly with a green Struve designation.

The atlas,
25,000 stars(plotted in half-magnitude steps, beautiful!) to magnitude 7.5, 900 deep-sky objects. Basically the same stars, same star clusters, same galaxies, few nebulae after a quick look, compared with Sinnott's Pocket Sky Atlas. The idea of the atlas is 30 charts on 30 CROSSING pages, with constellation stick figures, arrows showing adjacent chart numbers. Each page(half of one chart then) is twice the size as in Pocket Sky Atlas. The arrangement of the charts is like Sky Atlas 2000.0-8 charts for constellations on celestial equator, another 6+4+1 charts for each hemisphere. The index chart is two hemispheres.

At the front are the introduction and a 10-page table of 133 showpieces. At the back is a 56-page table of all labeled pairs. Tables(with green shade on every other line) show well under red light.

The cover is tough. A sin:) to print the text, tables on the same kind of paper the charts are on, but such a delight to touch.

If Scripture seems a bit confusing on the subjects of Heaven and Hell, the Messiah and the Cross, Death and Hades, the Times of the Gentiles, the Tribulation and the Great Tribulation, and the Second Coming of Christ, then get this chart.

It's tough trying to "put it all together" when reading the Bible. This chart will help you understand how to put things in their proper context. It's very affordable and there is a companion book available separately (I have not read that book at the time of this review).

It will fit in most Bibles fairly well so you can take it with you. The finish is a high-gloss vinyl to minimize wear and tear. I've bought several for family, friends and pastor.

This chart is the same as the one included in the book by Tim Lahaye: Charting the End Times. It is very helpful but had I known the same chart was included as a pull-out chart in the front of the book, I would NOT have bought it as an additional item.
To make the best use of the chart, a book would also be necessary to explain it. However, in a small group situation, it might be appropriate to have individual copies for members to use.

Steve Omera book "Deep-Sky Companions" is an excellent read and night time companion. I used to look at the night sky. Steve Omera's book has opened my brain to the sights. His descriptions use the same artistic language as a professional wine tester. In addition, his book uses quality paper and I have them while I observe. Dew does not seem to affect the paper, photographs or text in any fashion. All of Steve Omera's books are now on my short list for purchase.

When Sir Patrick Caldwell-Moore had his list of interesting objects , 109 in all , published in the December , 1995 issue of Sky and Telescope magazine , it became an instant "hit" with the amateur astronomical community. The list "mirrors" the list of Messier objects in number , and offers a real challenge to neophyte "deep sky" observers.

The list compiled by Sir Patrick covers a wide variety of objects , as well as a range of difficulty that makes observation of all items on the list a problematic. Many of the objects are found in the skies of the Southern Hemisphere , adding some spice to the already great challenge. Included are some very attractive star clusters , really awesome bright nebulae , distant galaxies , and many "planetary" nebulae.

Author O'Meara has done an excellent job with this second volume of Deep Sky Companions , better that the first ; many of the objects will probably never be seen by many amateur astronomers unwilling or unable to travel to Australia or South America to see the South Circimpolar Caldwell objects , hence my title to this review!

As in the previous volume on the Messier objects , each entry includes a photograph , a sky chart (too small a scale!) , a sketch made by the author at the eyepiece, and an excellent textual description and astrophysical analysis.

This book is definitely a "must own" for every serious backyard observer. It is not without a few flaws : i.e. the scale of the charts being next to useless , and the somewhat over optimistic description of what the average observer might be able to see.
Still worthy of a strong 4 stars. Recommended!

Stephan James O'Meara has done it again! In the fashion of his book on Mesier Objects, he has again produced a book that will guide and inform the lover of the night sky armed with a telescope. In chapter one he begins with a story involving an old man and Arcturus which deeply moved me, and later my wife when I read it to her, and which lead naturally into why we observe the nght sky so passionately. The bulk of the text, however, is in the second chapter where the author describes each of the 109 Caldwell objects in detail. Each object has a astrophotograph, his eyepeice impression drawing, a finder chart and visual description done in such elegance that everytime I read it I am awed all the more by what I am observing. In addition, Stephan has included interesting historical and astrophysical information about each of the objects. As I observe firsthand these objects with his book on my lap I am amazed at what I can see that I would not have seen without Stephan's guidance. This is a masterpeice for the avid observer! Thanks, Stephan.

The nuts and bolts of contrarian investing

Review Date: 2004-06-13
Richar Evans book provides very detailed guidelines for defining and buying depressed stocks. I rate it 5 stars because it provides actual strategies and methods that can be easily employed by the average investor. However, I want to clearly state at the beginning of this review that I do not recommend anyone actually use this book as an investment guide. Most people will lose money if they try to implement this book.

The first of three sections is an explanation of why this style of investing is profitable. The middle section is devoted to technical charting to identify the bottom of a falling stock. The third section is devoted to case studies.

I would not recommend this book to anybody I know personally, since there is a very real danger that a person will actually try to invest using this system, and will lose a great deal of money.

However, an investor with the desire to get above average returns, who has a proven ability to deal with stress of risky investments, can use the information in this book very profitably.

Who do I think can profit from this book? Anyone who has actually experienced losing over 30% of their portfolio, and were able to profit from the experience (either by buying more at the bottom when everybody else was trying to get out, or simply having the patience and character hold onto your stocks). So unless you have been invested during at least one major stock market crash, and profited (either financially, or learned a lesson about fear/greed/panic) I would definately not recommend this book. Ignore this warning at your own risk.

Very helpful in determining what, where, and when to buy stocks that have experience significant correction. Since the latest 2000 correction in the market, one would think that people will pay more attention to this type of thinking rather than simple momentum investing.

Excellent details, charts, graphs and explanations of how to chart the beginning of a turnaround for stocks that have been corrected or depressed.

I was not sure what to expect when I picked up the book, but for [the price] why not check it out. It was much better than anything I expected or have read in similar titles. The author gives the reader a solid foundation for entering and exiting low priced stocks. The book is filled with lots of good examples of the right time to buy beaten up stocks. The primary focus of his selection technique is technical analysis, although there is a fundamental bent thrown in. If you are thinking that there are bargins to be had after the past 2 years in the market, this is a title well worth checking out.

If you are interested in buying stocks in the low price range, $20 all the way down to penny stock range, this is the book for you. Evan's methods add a bit safety to this volatile price range by sticking with larger companies or depressed and distressed blue chips.

You will appreciate all his research, some from noted financial journals, as well as his numerous charts and examples. The first chapter goes through his rational and many studies on why low price stocks outperform. Chapter 1 alone is well worth the price of this book. Very well written, a definite classic.

A book that should be getting more attention.

Review Date: 2000-10-10
This is a very informative book. Evans' thesis is that low-priced and depressed stocks account for the major stock gains. In the first chapter he outlines the risks in buying these stocks and some precautions to take. The second chapter covers technical analysis, and the third chapter covers using the technicals to evaluate the charts of companies that have gone through major pullbacks, built bases, and seem ready to go up again. Chapters two and three are excellent, and really seem to be the book's center of gravity. However, later chapters go into numerous case studies which are very good teaching stories. The writing is accessible and clear, and should appeal to beginners as well as more advanced investors and traders.

The Michelin Atlas is the comprehensive way to get around France. The scale is such that every road in France is included. They have reduced the page size in this edition to make it easier to use and compete with GPS. This beats GPS becvause although it doesn't tell you when to turn you can use it to plan your travels by leafing through it in your hotel in the evenings. If you are going to drive in France you NEED this book. The pages exactly match the Michelin online maps which is an additional bonus.

Earle and Glover aptly bring to the reader the wonder of the sea, the advances in science made over the centuries, and the threats that now put the ocean and the great diversity of life within it at risk. The maps and graphics are truly stunning and I only wish that I could get copies to use in talks and to show others! I highly recommend this edition for anyone interested in the ocean!

"The Reader's Digest Children's Atlas of the Universe"
(Reader's Digest, 2000)
------------------------------------------------------------
This is a very nice mid-level children's book introducing the basics of the universe, its formation and structure, and our relationship to the worlds and galaxies around us. It is visually appealing, with a large, oversize format that lends itself to a sense of wonder and a strong graphic design that, while it could be better still doesn't have the rigidity and sterility of, say, stuff by DK Press. Once we found this at the library, I knew we would have to get a copy to have at home as well. Recommended! (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

The Atlas arrived in good condition and in a timely fashion. I was especially pleased because I was unable to find it in our two local bookstores. This is the second time I have ordered and received a book from a "secondary" source listed under Amazon.

This is a great book for studying (and teaching) about the solar system and the stars. My 9 year old read this every night until the day we had to return it to the library. I bought it right away after that. Amazing photographs - very attention getting. Great for all ages.

This book is beautifully illustrated and presented. Intended for my 4-yr-old, even my 2-yr-old now knows the names of most of the planets and understands their orientation. I would recommend this book to any and every parent.

This is a great buy for the pre-teen with a brimming curiosity. Comphrehensive and straightforward it made me want to do some traveling of my own! I especially liked how the information is presented in an easy to read-easy to grasp style for kids, yet doesn't condescend. I plan on giving this to my nephew in the hopes that some of his neverending questions about the universe will be answered!

I think it is remarkable that a rather small part of California could produce such a fascinating (and visually stunning) book but the Salton Sea is a quite remarkable place, especially considering it's only a few decades old. One bit of information that grabbed me is on page forty where a graphic profile of the Sea reveals that it is, on average, only fifty-one feet deep compared with Lake Tahoe which is 1645 feet at its deepest.

The Atlas is sectioned into five chapters: Physical geography, Cultural history, Limnology, Ecology, and Maps. The first four take up about half the pages and assorted maps, index and bibliography the rest. The main strength of the book, I think, are the non-map pages because they present a lot of complex information in a beautifully designed graphic format. Old maps and photographs, charts, illustrations of marine and bird life, cut-away graphics of land and more are all laid out with very clean typography on the large page size. Add quality paper and printing (with a 175 screen) and anyone looking through these pages will be easily drawn into this on-going story of the Salton.

The map pages are equally interesting and there really is a lot of technical data here but still presented in an accessible format. The range of information is quite comprehensive, for example: public land ownership, recreation areas, commercial facilities, energy usage, property values and median incomes, early exploration, earthquakes, soil types, surface hydrology right down to four maps showing the Sea's sediment grain size distribution. The nice thing about the maps is that they not only detail the Sea area also large parts of southern California.

This Atlas is a credit to all those who worked on it (and should really be template for any similar publications) for making the Salton come alive in such a stimulating way.

This book is wonderful! I highly recommend it.

The Salton Sea Atlas covers the complex issues facing this very special body of water in a clear, yet comprehensive, fashion (use of graphics and illustrations over exhaustive use of text). It's a beautiful book, and the most wide-ranging piece about the Salton Sea that I've been able to find. You will not be disappointed with it.

--Just wanted to second the comments of the other reviewers regarding the quality and presentation of this book. It's a scientific work undertaken by the Salton Sea Database Program of the Redlands Institute of the University of Redlands, but it's enclosed within a lovely and large glossy coffee table book. It also includes much information about the cultural history of the Salton Sea and its region in a remote part of the southern California desert. I especially enjoyed the beautiful wildlife illustrations and biological information, though most of the book covers the physical science of the Salton Sea. I gave a copy to someone at a Christmas party held many miles away at the Orange County coast, and people literally were waiting and nagging for their turn to look through this beautiful book about this mysterious and controversial inland subtropical sea.

An important guide about an invaluable resource

The Salton Sea Atlas explores issues and information regarding California's largest lake and most valuable environmental resource -- the Salton Sea.

This book is a must for those interested in the Salton Sea, environmental change, water issues in the American Southwest, history, or geography. Its graphical synthesis of complex social, scientific, and geographic information is superb and can be appreciated by all audiences. This is a wonderful publication.

I recommend it wholeheartedly
