Written by Samuel Gerald Collins (Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of Cultural Studies, Towson University) All Tomorrow's Cultures: Anthropological Engagements with the Future explores how anthropological knowledge of past and present human culture has been applied to speculate on its future, from the predictions generated by 19th-century anthropological thought to insights garnered in the modern day. Though All Tomorrow's Cultures is at its heart a scholarly text, its revelations are sure to fascinate not only diligent students of human culture but also anyone with a keen interest in creating or reading literature that imagines the future of humanity. Highly recommended especially for college library and anthropology shelves. "We have difficulty in thinking that an event - where a work of art or a work of nature - could have taken place unless it were not already capable of happening... the kinds of trajectories of globalization (Malthusian disaster, ecological ruin, rapid modernization) are construed as the inevitable realizations of an ineluctably evolving capitalist system. The idea of true difference is left behind. Culture construed as virtuality, on the other hand, foregrounds culture as pure difference."

I am the author of this book.

It's basically a how-to guide about finding what you want on the internet, using search engines and other internet tools.

Naturally, since it was published in 1995 it is now way out of date. At the time it was written, Google was not even a twinkle in the eye of two enterprising students, e-commerce was something that took pace in nightclubs, and the cutting edge of technology meant your modem transferred 3 kilobytes a second.

About 1/3 of the book is a super-basic explanation of how to use (then) new tools like Archie, Gopher, Veronica, and - if your computer could handle it - a new-fangled thing called a 'web browser'. The middle was a discussion of how to think like a journalist or researcher and track down documents on the internet with a combination of computer savvy and guesswork. The final third of the book consists of screenshots and brief reviews of various websites.

After hearing my wife's gynecologist mention more Lupron shots, Gonadotrophins and a second Laroscopy, I was desperately seeking more information on Endometriosis. That's when I bought this book. And our lives have changed for good, forever. This book lead us to a doctor practising Homeopathy. After starting treatment, my wife's cyst is gone, her periods are totally painless, and guess what - she got pregnant too! Can't thank the authors enough.

Alternative Medicine Guide to Women's Health 2 is "about alternative approaches to women's health--approaches not generally understood and, at this time, not endorsed by the medical establishment." The authors, Burton Goldberg and the editors of Alternative Medicine, recommend that readers discuss all alternative treatments with their physicians. They say that many women "have found their physicians to be open to new ideas."

Seven conditions are fully discussed: fibrocystic breast disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, environmental illness, and depression. The causes of each are detailed, along with major symptoms and testing procedures.

Alternative medicine therapies are provided for each condition. The authors also include explanations of why the alternatives may be better than conventional medicine. Addresses and phone numbers are provided for doctors, clinics, and laboratories that offer testing and other assistance. Twenty-two patient success stories attest to the effectiveness of alternative treatments.

The writing is easy to understand, with "quick definitions" sprinkled throughout the text. Drawings and photographs clarify technical descriptions. The endnotes include the sources of information on which the book is based, and can be used by those wishing to do their own research.

Goldberg says his book "is here to tell you that you don't have to live with your health problems" and "that alternative medicine has practical solutions for identifying and treating the underlying causes and thus can reverse the illness itself."

Alternative Medicine Guide to Women's Health 2 emphasizes prevention of disease, and is a must-have for women of all ages.

America at War

Review Date: 2007-08-23
As Amerca culture falls ever more rapidly into moral decay, all too many of the people of God have withdrawn from the fight for our freedom and our future. In this book, Johnny Esposito reminds us that America is at war, and this war is the battle for our future as a "Christian" nation. The Bible, once our conscience and moral compass. has been eliminated from the public school and the public square. We have allowed the "enemies of the cross." who hold nothing sacred or sure, to revise our history books and remove our heritage as a Christian nation founded upon Bible principles. The Scripture says, "Blessed s the nation whose God is the Lord." (Psalm 33:12).

America has forgotted the godly foundation on which she was built. We have exchanged the truth of God's Word for the lies of a godless world. We have traded our spiritual birthright as a God-fearing nation for the socialist, humanist and atheistic pottage of the day. While our enemies work tirelessly to advance their cause, we have very few who will stand up for what is right, regardless of the consequences, and who will champion the great causes of the Bible. We are battling for the future of our nation!

In this book, Johnny Esposito reminds us of our need for a great army of committed soldiers of the cross to "rise up and be doing" the work of the kingdom. He also admonishes us to not only hold our ground, but to go forward and "take the land" back from the demonic and deceptive activists who have literally transformed this nation into a secular state that has forgotten and forsaken God.

Daniel & Terry Seymour have a great collection of stories and ideas from teacher's of the year. As a first year teacher I enjoy reading it to find some interesting things to try in my own classroom. The opinions that are voiced in this book are those of teachers in the "real world." Parents that are concerned about classroom management and how their kids should be taught should read this book to get an idea of what is a "good" classroom. The book is very easy to read with little extras in each chapter. I recommend it to anyone interested in education and kids of all ages.

Best Book on Electric Utilitys in the market

I read the 5th version of the book several years ago working for a large multinational electric utility and since then have ordered every update of the book. It is one of the best books on the industry written, easy to read, easy to understand the drivers behind this complex industry. It allows the reader to grasp the technical concepts involved, and provides good insights into the business case of an electric utility by clearly defining the industries value drivers and how they are reflected in a utilities P&L, B/S and cashflow statement. Furthermore it provides good insight into the regulatory framework and its interdependencies with the industry. The new edition (7th) is just as supperb as I am used to from the author. Great job.

Scholarly conclusions
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-10
In _America's Forgotten Wars_, Sarkesian draws some basic conclusions that are not entirely original. But his approach was scholarly and well organized in making those conclusions.

1. American culture breeds a belief in "just" wars where we do not fight unless provoked. At times, such as in Vietnam where the
provocation was questionable, the American people and the citizen
soldiers found it difficult to fully support the fight.

2. In many of America's low-intensity conflicts (Seminole wars, the Phillipine uprising, the Punitive expedition into Mexico, Vietnam),other political concerns took center stage. This has been one factorin the tendency of US forces to not learn from those experiences - seeing them as side-wars that were not "real" wars in the conventionally-focused organization of the US military.

3. The US military (primarily the author focuses on the Army) has a culture fed by the American culture of Euro-centrist thinking that fails to take into account the rest of the world with much
significance. This feeds the tendency toward conventional warfare
thinking in political leadership as well as military organization. The conventional mindset is further strengthened by a growing dependence on technology in waging wars since technology most readily supports conventional conflict but is often less effective in counter-insurgency.

Sarkesian organized this book into 3 or 4 views of the subject:
1. State of the Nation (the political and cultural background of the US military)

2. Military Posture (the military organization at the time of the
conflict and how it is postured whether peacetime or wartime footing at the hostilities begin)

3. Nature of the Conflict (the political-military effectiveness of the enemy and how it is perceived by our military and political leadership)

He appears to have followed that same organization in a subsequent book, _Unconventional Conflicts in a New Security Era_.

I am a college student at Temple University and I had to read this book for my political science class. I thought this book was very well thought out and persuasive. In the book, Hudson explains eight reasons why America falls short of being a true democracy.

I learned very much from this book and I suggest it to somebody who wants to learn about the United States' democratic system and how it could work better!
