A Book to Return To

This profoundly learned and balanced book draws on the geatest minds (Tocqueville being only one, also Nietzsche, Augustine, Rousseau, etc.) to identify and weigh issues with which America now ought to be concerned. One may return again and again to "ruminate" over any part from cover to cover, even a paragraph, always coming away with insight into today's world. One of its many strengths lies in revealing how conventionally-accepted formations of social and political problems only mask deeper issues that require real attention. With the the "problem" of racism, for example, the deeper, thornier issue is the memory of slavery. Mitchell holds great thinkers to great scrutiny, but with great respect. The insights in the footnotes alone are worth the price of the book.

If you are reading Democracy in America and attempting to come to terms with Alexis de Tocqueville as he pertains to 21st century America, there is no better book I could suggest to you than Joshua Mitchell's The Fragility of Freedom.

Professor Joshua Mitchell, of Georgetown University, is indeed gifted at breathing life into what many students too often and mistakenly view as "dry" political theory. It was through Mitchell's guidance that I began to see Tocqueville's ideas - the need to fill the void within ourselves; America's ever expanding boundaries; self definition by action and acquistion - not only existing but thriving in America today. Political theory and philosophy came alive! It was exciting and that had never happened to me before.

For a student of Political Science, Philosophy or American History, this book is a must read. It's been over five years since I purchased this book and I still refer to it on a weekly basis.

I have to agree with the other reviewer: this is a great book for understanding how to present the Gospel to others. But it is also a great book for understanding what the doctrine of salvation is. Mr. Moyer uses the Scriptures to present the foundation of the Gospel (especially repentance), and explains the original Greek clearly and effectively. And I can't stress too much: read the Notes! Those notes for each chapter, presented in the back of the book, contain a wealth of information! I highly recommend this book.

This is the most awesome book iv'e ever read on communicating the Good News to the lost,or even to new believers who need a clearer understanding of who they are in christ.
I f you apply yourself to these principals even the most inexperienced person will have sucess,I myself only have an 8 th grade education but was able to lead someone to christ as they were in the hospital at the time, and another one right there at the ... snack bar!. Hallelljuiah! useing this method, and of course using my own words to make this simple for me.
I highly recommend this book if you want to overcome the fear of sharing our faith with others.

I was first assigned this book as required reading by one of the authors, Dr. Alfonso Montuori (who also happens to be my academic advisor). Now that you know my relation to the author and my possible bias, let me tell you how wonderful this book is.

From Power to Partnership offers an inspiring glimpse at how people across disciplines are enacting the Partnership way of being as espoused by Riane Eisler in the Chalice and Blade. The authors describe Eisler's basic principles of Partnership Social Systems and then proceed to offer examples of Partnership ways of being and doing in relationships, culture, education, and in connection with the environment. This book brings to life the Dominator-Partnership paradox and continuum.

Interviews with real people are eloquently weaved with factual information and the author's own voices to keep the reader interested in- and reflective upon- the world situation today and the impending paradigm shift in how we relate to one another. My husband, a musician, found the book extremely interesting and motivating. He passed the book along to other musicians, several educators, and a few home school families. All of those folks have found the information both eye opening and reinforcing of their own values.

Though the book was written some ten years ago, the information remains extremely relevant. As we continue to live in a world plagued by war and disease we are more in need of Partnership values and ways of being then ever before.

A must read if you are creating any partnership

This book is an inspiring read if you are juggling professional and personal demands. The anecdotes beautifully morph into a step-by-step guide to success. Specifically, Rebecca's four-step "Get RIDD of Stress" process coupled with recommended exercises make this book one you'll want to keep handy. I was instantly motivated to make changes so I can live my life in "Full Bloom".

A shot of inspiration straight to my heart.

Rebecca's ability to partner two very different yet similar processes through growth, cultivation, and nurturing of life to the plant world was captivating. The read was simple and engaging and the exercises really provoke a great amount of thought in every aspect of the life cycle. The simple process could be adapted to business, education, and most all areas of life.

This book is a great tool and should be a must read for students. It really helped me. I even made a spread sheet of many of the exercises and when feeling overwhelmed go to them as a source of comfort and balance.

I highly recommend the book to women and men from middle school to mid life. A must read....

Brilliant woman!!

Future @ Work is something every manager needs. It helps you to relate every key business principle to your staff in a way they will understand. I really like the way the book is put together, so that each chapter stands alone and can be applied as the need arises. There is no other book like it, and in language everyone can understand. This is something you can apply immediately in your workplace--you will get results!

My message to the future is the same message that I received when I was a Boy Scout... Be Prepared. As I watch my children pass into the world of work I find myself asking the question are they really ready for what's instore for them out there. What they will find is that school may be close to ending but "learning is just beginning". I have come across a great book may help someone you know get that little bit of an edge in the jobmarket. The book is called Future@Work. The book touches on personal success factors for the individual and company, communication and process thinking everything that employers are looking for. I thought that I would share this information with the next generation. All the Best! All the Time!

I remember this from my childhood! It's full of great predictions about the future, about how we're all going to be living in bubbles on the moon by the year 2000, etc. Some of it was quite prescient, e.g. there's stuff about pollution, environmentalism, camcorders and satellite TV. Other stuff, like cylindrical space cities, was perhaps a bit overoptimistic. Today, it's a great retro read!

Interesting and great illustrations

I read the Chinese version of this book when I was a kid. For a children's book, it's surprisingly insightful. It's also interesting to see how some of the preditions in the book have come true. The illustrations are great too. I find this book pretty inspiring even for an adult and I highly recommend it especially if you like sci-fi.

This book is very useful for practitioners interested in using economy wide models for planning or in particular for the energy sector. Explanations are clear, there are many practical data and analysis and the application is elaborate. There are many scientific and economic details which will be useful for most readers. The survey of literature is still very useful.

I had been looking for a book like this for quite a while...
This book is not for everyone.
It is a well written work that helps to understand the concept of High-Technology...
(if you think you have a good understanding... read it, you may be surprised)
An extensive analysis on the concepts, people and companies that make it happen.
Essential if you need to PROPERLY understand the concept of a High-technology company.
A must if you're into the High-Tech market, and are dead serious about it.

It's a big book... worth every page.

A Pathway for Professional Growth

Review Date: 2003-01-06
This is a great book for the millions of Americans and international professionals whose jobs and professional growth rely on the survival and growth of technology-intensive firms.

Eric Boland and Charles Hofer have made a significant contribution by addressing many paradoxes related to "high technology" firms. Unfortunately, the popular media has done a disservice by using the term `technology' and `information technology' interchangeably. Particularly noteworthy, therefore, is that these authors, bringing complimentary skills, give many lucid examples of technology-intensive firms that are not directly related to the computer or information technology.

Eric Boland helps us with his insight into the inner workings of high-tech firms, and Charles Hofer has added his life-long pioneering of strategic and techno-entrepreneurial perspectives. The two have also successfully bridged the chasm between the academic researchers in technology and innovation management, and the practitioner managers facing the day-to-day fire-fighting in their fast changing and increasingly globalizing high-tech firms.

Pioneer of mama-zine genre makes for an amazing book!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-05
In this zine-book, China Martens, pioneer of the mama-zine genre, collects "the best" of her zine, The Future Generation, from its first issue in 1990 (when her daughter had just turned two years old) to the present - representing 16 years spanning China's parenting life. The chosen selections in this anthology focus on China's personal writings, not the contributions, and do an exemplary job of capturing not only China's changing interests over the years, but also her journey as a woman, mother, writer and activist.
Becoming a mother just shy of her 22nd birthday in 1988 when "most punks weren't parents and most parents weren't punks," China started The Future Generation as a way to find and connect with other subcultural parents. In the subculture where she'd lived actively for years, China felt disconnected and easily recognized a void in her peer's consciousness in terms of child-related issues. She didn't know then that her cutting edge drive to put those new mama feelings and observations into zine form would years later inspire an entire new generation of subcultural parents and mama zinesters, even if her "squat daycare revolution" wasn't ever realized.
A full decade after the first issue of The Future Generation came out in April 1990, I was a new mama myself when I discovered China's The Future Generation writings in her regular Slug & Lettuce column. Because her writing is warm, accessible, and the kind of raw that's full of emotion and honesty, I felt an immediate need to get in touch with her to thank her for helping me feel less alone in my new mama life.
When the next issue of The Future Generation zine came out (issue #11), I ordered one right away. When it came in the mail, I knew I was going to love it from the cover alone. No Baby Gap modeling here, the toddler on the cover looked real - adorably tousled from outdoor fun. In the background, the parents hanging out at an outdoor punk show racked up immediate points too. The same kind of real life, rough around the edges parent and kid imagery is captured again here in the zine-book - pregnant synchronized swimmers in bikinis, naked baby buns running down an empty road, mama bands, mom and daughter photo booth strips, tattooed parents, demonstrations, collages, and breastfeeding babies.
When I started reading that issue #11, I loved it even more. From the introduction where I felt like my new mama life had been captured (I read I wasn't the only mama who had trouble getting out of the house and managing baby fussiness in public) to the excellent first-hand experience-based advice I'd need years down the road ("The Angst of Being The Parent of a Young Teen"), I became a loyal fan. No mainstream parenting magazine tripe here - nothing insinuating how inadequate a mama I'd be for not doing things the status quo way - no generic checklists for juggling baby and housework. I never missed an issue after that.
Now having this zine-book, where I can read the best of the issues I'd missed, is like finally understanding a complete conversation after only having come in at the tale end. Because parenting is a journey full of change and self-exploration, just like or kid's childhoods, the zine-book captures China's journey - and then some.
There are numerous pieces on the desire to network with other anarchist/punk/subcultural parents as well as essays on being on welfare, tuning into kid's physical and emotional needs, fostering freedom and responsibility in children, going after hopes and dreams, nurturing children with respect, anarchist child raising, struggling, when motherhood sucks, single dads, violence, sexuality, schooling, non-punitive discipline, class-conscience children's liberation, breastfeeding, politics, resistance, and family history - all of it written through China's single mama lens while she focuses on raising her daughter, the both of them surviving, living and growing together and in their communities.
Without a doubt, this book will go down as a parenting classic for the future generations.

this is the antidote to alterna-parenting schlock

China is an incredible writer: unpretentious, witty, smart & incisive. I wish I had read her zine when I was starting to parent 9 years ago, but I'm glad I can read it now. Unlike authors of so called "alternative" or "punk" (ex: Alternadad or Mamarama) parenting books, China has walked the walk.
