Future @ Work is something every manager needs. It helps you to relate every key business principle to your staff in a way they will understand. I really like the way the book is put together, so that each chapter stands alone and can be applied as the need arises. There is no other book like it, and in language everyone can understand. This is something you can apply immediately in your workplace--you will get results!

My message to the future is the same message that I received when I was a Boy Scout... Be Prepared. As I watch my children pass into the world of work I find myself asking the question are they really ready for what's instore for them out there. What they will find is that school may be close to ending but "learning is just beginning". I have come across a great book may help someone you know get that little bit of an edge in the jobmarket. The book is called Future@Work. The book touches on personal success factors for the individual and company, communication and process thinking everything that employers are looking for. I thought that I would share this information with the next generation. All the Best! All the Time!

I remember this from my childhood! It's full of great predictions about the future, about how we're all going to be living in bubbles on the moon by the year 2000, etc. Some of it was quite prescient, e.g. there's stuff about pollution, environmentalism, camcorders and satellite TV. Other stuff, like cylindrical space cities, was perhaps a bit overoptimistic. Today, it's a great retro read!

Interesting and great illustrations

I read the Chinese version of this book when I was a kid. For a children's book, it's surprisingly insightful. It's also interesting to see how some of the preditions in the book have come true. The illustrations are great too. I find this book pretty inspiring even for an adult and I highly recommend it especially if you like sci-fi.

This book is very useful for practitioners interested in using economy wide models for planning or in particular for the energy sector. Explanations are clear, there are many practical data and analysis and the application is elaborate. There are many scientific and economic details which will be useful for most readers. The survey of literature is still very useful.

I had been looking for a book like this for quite a while...
This book is not for everyone.
It is a well written work that helps to understand the concept of High-Technology...
(if you think you have a good understanding... read it, you may be surprised)
An extensive analysis on the concepts, people and companies that make it happen.
Essential if you need to PROPERLY understand the concept of a High-technology company.
A must if you're into the High-Tech market, and are dead serious about it.

It's a big book... worth every page.

A Pathway for Professional Growth

Review Date: 2003-01-06
This is a great book for the millions of Americans and international professionals whose jobs and professional growth rely on the survival and growth of technology-intensive firms.

Eric Boland and Charles Hofer have made a significant contribution by addressing many paradoxes related to "high technology" firms. Unfortunately, the popular media has done a disservice by using the term `technology' and `information technology' interchangeably. Particularly noteworthy, therefore, is that these authors, bringing complimentary skills, give many lucid examples of technology-intensive firms that are not directly related to the computer or information technology.

Eric Boland helps us with his insight into the inner workings of high-tech firms, and Charles Hofer has added his life-long pioneering of strategic and techno-entrepreneurial perspectives. The two have also successfully bridged the chasm between the academic researchers in technology and innovation management, and the practitioner managers facing the day-to-day fire-fighting in their fast changing and increasingly globalizing high-tech firms.

Pioneer of mama-zine genre makes for an amazing book!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-05
In this zine-book, China Martens, pioneer of the mama-zine genre, collects "the best" of her zine, The Future Generation, from its first issue in 1990 (when her daughter had just turned two years old) to the present - representing 16 years spanning China's parenting life. The chosen selections in this anthology focus on China's personal writings, not the contributions, and do an exemplary job of capturing not only China's changing interests over the years, but also her journey as a woman, mother, writer and activist.
Becoming a mother just shy of her 22nd birthday in 1988 when "most punks weren't parents and most parents weren't punks," China started The Future Generation as a way to find and connect with other subcultural parents. In the subculture where she'd lived actively for years, China felt disconnected and easily recognized a void in her peer's consciousness in terms of child-related issues. She didn't know then that her cutting edge drive to put those new mama feelings and observations into zine form would years later inspire an entire new generation of subcultural parents and mama zinesters, even if her "squat daycare revolution" wasn't ever realized.
A full decade after the first issue of The Future Generation came out in April 1990, I was a new mama myself when I discovered China's The Future Generation writings in her regular Slug & Lettuce column. Because her writing is warm, accessible, and the kind of raw that's full of emotion and honesty, I felt an immediate need to get in touch with her to thank her for helping me feel less alone in my new mama life.
When the next issue of The Future Generation zine came out (issue #11), I ordered one right away. When it came in the mail, I knew I was going to love it from the cover alone. No Baby Gap modeling here, the toddler on the cover looked real - adorably tousled from outdoor fun. In the background, the parents hanging out at an outdoor punk show racked up immediate points too. The same kind of real life, rough around the edges parent and kid imagery is captured again here in the zine-book - pregnant synchronized swimmers in bikinis, naked baby buns running down an empty road, mama bands, mom and daughter photo booth strips, tattooed parents, demonstrations, collages, and breastfeeding babies.
When I started reading that issue #11, I loved it even more. From the introduction where I felt like my new mama life had been captured (I read I wasn't the only mama who had trouble getting out of the house and managing baby fussiness in public) to the excellent first-hand experience-based advice I'd need years down the road ("The Angst of Being The Parent of a Young Teen"), I became a loyal fan. No mainstream parenting magazine tripe here - nothing insinuating how inadequate a mama I'd be for not doing things the status quo way - no generic checklists for juggling baby and housework. I never missed an issue after that.
Now having this zine-book, where I can read the best of the issues I'd missed, is like finally understanding a complete conversation after only having come in at the tale end. Because parenting is a journey full of change and self-exploration, just like or kid's childhoods, the zine-book captures China's journey - and then some.
There are numerous pieces on the desire to network with other anarchist/punk/subcultural parents as well as essays on being on welfare, tuning into kid's physical and emotional needs, fostering freedom and responsibility in children, going after hopes and dreams, nurturing children with respect, anarchist child raising, struggling, when motherhood sucks, single dads, violence, sexuality, schooling, non-punitive discipline, class-conscience children's liberation, breastfeeding, politics, resistance, and family history - all of it written through China's single mama lens while she focuses on raising her daughter, the both of them surviving, living and growing together and in their communities.
Without a doubt, this book will go down as a parenting classic for the future generations.

China is an incredible writer: unpretentious, witty, smart & incisive. I wish I had read her zine when I was starting to parent 9 years ago, but I'm glad I can read it now. Unlike authors of so called "alternative" or "punk" (ex: Alternadad or Mamarama) parenting books, China has walked the walk.

An excellent way to reinforce concepts

These cards are for any law student interested in reinforcing the basic concepts of future interests. Unfortunately, most textbooks on future interests do not provide a way for students to test their knowledge. These cards are a perfect way to do so by providing excellent examples of issues common to the study of future interests. The cards cover all the subjects (e.g., formation of estates, doctrines, and even the dreaded Rule Against Perpetuities). The concepts are made clear and the answers are concise. I highly recommend these cards.

We had two quizzes on future interests in my Property class. The first one was a "practice" quiz, and was held 3 weeks before the actual quiz. My score on the practice quiz was a pathetic 41% (7 out of 17). Needless to say, I was none too pleased with this score, so I sought out study aids to help me improve. I had some of the "Law in a Flash" sets for other classes, and had been happy with them, so I was excited to see they offered flashcards for the topic of future interests.

By the time I ordered them, and they arrived at my house, there was less than 1 week until the "real" quiz. I worked with the cards each day up until quiz day, and not surprisingly, I was very confident during the quiz. There were 35 questions total, and I only missed ONE for a score of 97%!

Each individual type of future interest, conceptually, is not very difficult to understand. However, it is very easy to get them mixed up in the more complicated, detailed scenarios/fact patterns. This product was invaluable in my mastery of future interests. To me, future interest "problems" are similar to mathematical problems. The more practice you have with a particular type of problem, the more automatic that type of calculation becomes.

My Property book has a few problems listed in the "Notes" section; however, they are few in number, and there are (of course) no answers! This product, however, contains numerous cards (organized by type) for each of future interest. The cards contain varying levels of difficulty, ranging from simple to complicated. The explanation on the back of each card is very detailed, and easy to understand. Many of them not only contain the answer, but also have what the answer(s) would be if various facts in the question were altered.

If you are struggling with future interests, or if you just want to further your grasp on the various concepts, you definitely need to order these cards. They made all the difference for me, and I highly recommend them!

I you like sci-fi/humor then read this one!
The story is superbly weaved together. Twists and humor keep the action relevant. The characters play off each other's faults and keep outwitting one another. The situations that Andy gets herself in (and out of) just escalate with every chapter. This would make a great sitcom. I hope to see it as a movie soon! Can't wait to read the next book of the trilogy.

Hilarious tale of a situation out of control

This action packed book has a good balance of adventure, sci-fi and humor. It will keep you laughing and guessing what trouble Andy Wilson will get into next. It starts off innocently enough, but when she decides to dump her couch. The universe definately conspires against her from that point on. You'll follow as both sides brace for all out war, neither side sure of Andy's true intentions. Is she a hero, a master spy, or just a girl looking to throw away a black leather couch. You decide... If you like science-fiction with a laugh, DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

Superb exploration of Air Traffic automation and risk.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-23
This important follow-on to "Flight to the Future" covers the automation initiatives in ATC modernization. The various programs in development are detailed from the human-centered automation viewpoint, including assessments of the potential risk involved in implementing them. (Refinements in the various programs since the report was published make some of this detail dated, but the underlying automation approach has remained consistent.)

This report is critical because it leads one to ask human factors questions beyond color scheme and font size and display lay-out: namely, what is the purpose of this function in the system, and what does the system gain *and lose* if that function is automated? That is, is automating this function going to provide enough benefit to system safety and performance to off-set the risks thereof?

Not content to merely ask the questions, the NRC panel also presents over a dozen pages of solid recommendations for mitigating the risk of automating air traffic control functions, emphasizing the human-centered automation approach.

Great resource, as are they all from the NRC

This is a well written book that focuses on the changing times in America. Our founding fathers expected us to "grow" our democracy as the country grew. Now after two centuries of our country, we have a true melting pot of cultures and ability to communicate from coast to coast in seconds. Our historical identity is changing. Isn't it time to settle down for a second at see what we have acheived and then look forward and see where we can go?
Mr. Browder introduces the idea that Americans need to stop for a minute and look around. Once we have, maybe we can decide where America is going in the future.

Review Date: 1999-06-22
Unger and West carefully, methodically characterize current American socio-economic circumstances to build their case for a new era of American progressivism which is based on the "religion of possibility." It is an inspired attempt to encourage all Americans to begin thinking differently, imaginatively, about the situations that keep the nation from being truly democratic. Extremely thorough, this book is a challenge to us all to seek out alternatives to the status quo. It is a challenge to leaders to serve the best interests of the nation as opposed to the special interest groups who line their pockets. I only wish Cornel West would run for president. I don't know who else would stand up for what is morally, politically, and socially correct. I'd drop everything to campaign for him....

Conflicts and Recommendations for Creating a Progressive Soc
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-02
Unger and West are two dynamic intellectuals whose passion and commitment to democracy are manifest in the broad strokes with which they paint their vision of the future. They discuss the enduring power of hierarchies of race, class, and gender which keep us locked into our current patterns in society. Then provide seven recommendations for creating a progressive society. This book is an excellent supplement for nearly any ethics or poly sci course.
