Thinking of OthersReview Date: 2007-09-28
Will help you plan the care that you wantReview Date: 2007-08-23
happy and healthy . . . it is a step-by-step handbook, in which
you get to provide your future caregivers with information about
your needs and wishes.
Whether you like it or not, most of us will need assistance
some time in our life . . . this book gives you the opportunity
to decide what you want, as opposed to having somebody
else make these decisions for you.
It should be completed by those living alone in cities away
from family, adults with children, older adults before serious
illness, and anyone in the early stages of Alzheimer's
or other serious and other potentially fatal diseases.
WHO CARES will show you how to actually write a letter
to your future caregivers and what to include in it . . . I liked
the many suggestions it gave, including the one to give
providers information on what you both like (including ice
cream!) and dislike . . . instructions are even given on how
to share what you have learned in life.
There were many useful tidbits of information I gained from
reading this book; among them:
* When you come to visit, please don't tell me you can't stay
very long. That tells me that you are there because of obligation.
Truthfully, in that case, I would rather you stay away and get
whatever is rushing you out of the way. Just come and see me when
you can spend quality time holding my hand, talking to me seeing
that I am okay. I say all of the above with love and understanding--not
with anger.
* In large decisions in life, decide what is in your heart. Do not just
think with your head.
* Do not do anything you would not be proud to have your children
do in the future. They are watching
* Never measure what you do for each other. Give with your whole
heart when a family member is in need.
Lastly, there's this idea that I wished I had thought of when my
mother-in-law was alive:
* Leave a few dollars to that a pizza can be ordered or some
other special treat. (Some patients met as a group and did this
weekly in the nursing home.)

Ideal polityReview Date: 2007-02-15
2. The terrorist had beliefs that gave their lives meaning though what those beliefs were remain contested, theoretically, psychologically, and politically.
3. Some security measures should be taken, for many terrorist are beyond both appeasement and deterrence, but if terrorism is simply matched by escalating violence, then fear will be sovereign in world affairs, and the terrorist will have won some sort of victory.
4. In traditional war, victory is assured by the occupying of ground; in a global war against terrorism not only has territory to be occupied in some sense globally, but also hearts and minds have to be won over.
5. Terror networks need more than weapons: they also need bases, and this is why the US used force against the Taliban government that maintained a close alliance with al-Qaeda.
6. The Caspian sea has become a new vision of a new Saudi Arabia.
7. 9/11 and the global war on terror has not fundamentally altered the dynamic interplay and territoriality and transnationalism.
8. The worlds of force and law collide in ways that are comparable to terror and dialogue. One difference is that the terrorist are always unlawful and there are times when force may be used to disarm and defeat the terrorist. The great danger is that fighting terrorism might provoke ruthless behaviors that represent some sort of victory for the terrorist. The prevent a slide into unlawful violence, a number of condition must be met: 1. all pacific forms must be address to find resolution 2. there must be no doubt about the justice of the cause 3. those responsible for the conduct of the war must act within the restraints established by the laws of war.
9. Terrorism is a method of political action that uses violence against civilians and civilian infrastructure in order to influence behaviour, to inflict punishment or to exact revenge. The goal is to make the target group afraid of tomorrow and each other. Terrorism is an act, not an ideology.
10. One of the tragic paradoxes of the twentieth century is that those states which have most closely self-identified with the path of enlightenment have committed acts of barbarism that no modern terrorist group has yet been able to match.
11. Poverty is the state that causes terrorist to act. In and ideal polity, political action is based on dialogue, one which participants rationally seek to persuade other of the universal validity of their moral beliefs.
12. Terrorism is an abberation without long term disruption.
A Very Distinguished Collection.Review Date: 2003-01-01
This book goes some way towards redressing the balance. It is essentially a series of essays by various academics on various aspects of the "War on Terrorism". There is something for everyone here. You will almost certainly find something you agree with, but equally you will doubtless find something that will infuriate you! The book purposely draws on academics with unashamedly differing world views (many of whom are EXTREMELY distinguished - a real A list bunch). A chapter by the Marxists' favourite Noam Chomsky shares space with a chapter by the British uber-realist Colin Gray and another by that master of fair and balanced analysis, Lawrence Freedman (why has John Keegan got a knighthood when Freedman hasn't?). Kenneth Waltz and Robert O'Keohane both feature, as do half the International Politics department of Aberystwith University. You really would be hard pressed to find work by so many quality people in one place elsewhere.
There's somebody for everybody here - corny but true. These are the people who have been setting the standards for the debate - not the left wing editorials of the European press and the right wing columnists in the American print media that both sides seem to get so worked up about these days.
If you're interested in the debate on the "War on Terror" post September 11th, this book deserves to be on your shelves.

"Don't all killers secretly crave the designation serial?"Review Date: 2008-08-23
Having developed somewhat of a fetish for this author's prose after having read her first cult novel, I (HEART) LORD BUDDHA, which is now probably as near and dear to my heart as Ami Sakurai's INNOCENT WORLD, I could not help but feel the slightest bit afraid that I would compare this latest book to the other, like two lovers, and somehow find something wanting. To my relief, my expectations were vastly exceeded. I was even surprised by some of the twists and turns this plot takes. This is NOT your average revenge tale. It is refreshingly modern, original, thoughtful, and ultra-cool. Edgy and addictive, it stays in the system long after the pages stop.
This author is a talent to be reckoned with. My only complaint is that I am impatient for her next manifestation.

Pretty Freekin FunnyReview Date: 2007-10-04
This book is not at all what I expected, but I liked it as well.
Our Humble Yet Rather Desperate Narrator takes us on a journey with Pretty, Freekin, and Scary back to Franklin/Freekin's hometown, where no questions can be asked (a fact that led to Franklin's premature, mysterious death).
This is a story that has to be read to be believed.
We would also like to petition the International Order of Narrators to apologize to and welcome back Chris P. Flesh to their order -- and while they're at it, give Chris a nice plaque AND a shiny medal.

This isn't pro-porn, and it's not anti-porn, and it itself is not porn. What, in point of fact, is it? It's nothing I've ever seen before - honest. It's funny and horrifying, sexual and sterile, smart and blunt... if this could please become a new genre, I'll add a bookshelf to my wall for it.
Definitely the most interesting read this year. I read it for the insane sex, but I loved it for the insane humor.

An explorative guide to the preservation of a parents cherished baby itemsReview Date: 2006-03-10
Practical and Inspiring....a loving tribute to your Little One!Review Date: 2006-04-13
And I love my old baby stuff, don't you? Even in old photographs, I see the old patterns of blankets and flooring, old toys, old books, etc., and part of me is comforted. I love to look at these simple things, and remember being a baby. ;-) It's amazing how visceral and instinctive the memories can be, too. Later on down the line, not only will your grown-up child be thrilled and tickled, but your child's family and friends will recall their own childhood memories, too, as the capsule is opened and enjoyed.
Anyway, it's really interesting to read in this VERY READABLE BOOK about different materials and how long they last. I think my favorite section is "Choosing Baby's Items." I love the ideas...they are so creative!
I think the "Letters for the Future" ideas are so very sweet....and really really precious, especially if the parent might not be alive when the adult child opens the capsule. I think any parent would be giving their child a very beautiful gift to do this.
The Geneology section is also very interesting and gives me some ideas to trace my own and my husband's family tree.
All-in-all, a practical, easy-to-read, inspiring, and spunky little book that will guarantee the memories you save will be cherished and passed down to future generations.
Informative AND EnjoyableReview Date: 2005-12-16
I was hooked into reading the rest of the book when it began by explaining why I might want to make a time capsule in the first place. Then, without the use of confusing technical jargon, it clearly covers every aspect of time capsule creation from the memory selection process to the proper paper, ink, and preservation materials to use. There is a wonderful chapter on genealogy that provides just enough information to cover that important aspect of baby's life for inclusion in the time capsule.
This project could be undertaken by the parents OR grandparents of the baby. At the agreed-upon time of opening (twenty years is suggested), the "baby," who is now all grown up, is ceremonially presented with a wonderful gift of exquisitely preserved artifacts from the first year of his/her life. It is a gift of memory for the parents, but for the grown-up child, it is a gift of actually feeling, for the first time, what his/her first year of life must have been like--right down to world events that were occurring at the time. There can be no experience to compare with the unique chance to travel back in time and this book is the only ticket you need. It's well worth the price!

An Excellent Book!Review Date: 2007-11-27
Your Future in a Coffee Cup is a true gem - small, brilliant, and evocative of history, storytelling and romance - everything you could ask for in a book. The author, Sahar Huneidi, is a gifted psychic and intuitive who has helped numerous people over the years with her readings and teachings. Her talents include divining in a variety of ways, among them, through the medium of coffee grounds.
The history of coffee, where it came from and how it entered the Western world is entertaining enough, but when you include the many generations of soothsayers (mostly women) and the oral traditions for scrying that they passed on, you begin to get a feel for the romance of this tradition. The author is a decendant of one of the four great Sufi Masters, Abdul Kader Al Gilani. With Your Future in a Coffee Cup, Ms. Huneidi invites us to join this tradition and gives us the tools and instruction to do it.
The illustrations and the lay-out of the book are excellent. The author shares actual readings she has done with her clients, along with photographs of the cups of coffee grounds she is scanning for the divination. The readings are fascinating, as is Ms. Huneidi's talent and creativity for intuiting the story behind them - what has happened, what is really on the mind of the enquirer, and what the future holds for that person.
Along the way the author offers exercises for the reader to expand his or her own talents for fortune-telling. The combination of instruction and following actual readings really works - this book really delivers! What looks like just a cup of mud in the beginning unfolds to reveal a wealth of symbol and meaning by the end. Sometimes the symbols jump out at you, other times some imagination and creativity is required, but that's the fun and intuitive part of it. The author mentions that this is a popular tradition in many countries - Greece, Turkey, India, the Middle East and Russia among them--and she will often give a different culture's interpretation of the same symbol. Interestingly enough, she notes that women of different cultures who read the same cup will note and interpret completely different symbols, and yet come up with similar fortunes.
For a slim book, there is a wealth of information and inspiration packed in Your Future in a Coffee Cup. The average reader will finish it and want to run out and start grinding their own coffee right away! And if, as the author says, there is power in the ability to foresee the future - to know what is coming or how to make different choices - then there is a great amount of power in this book that will get you there.
Highly, highly recommended!Review Date: 2007-10-16
