Makes genetic questions seem easy

We had several family members who were trying to decide whether to undergo genetic testing. We were intimidated by the complexity of the subject. This book was a life-saver! It explained things in clear, simple language and raised questions that we hadn't even thought of. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's not just for people who are religious, but for anyone who is trying to figure out what to do about genetic testing.

Patient-friendly and not just for Christians

This is a really useful book for those who are considering genetic testing or those just interested in it and wanting to learn more about our genes and our choices. It looks at the real choices that people face, using a question-and-answer format. It also provides actual cases to help readers figure out what could be the best thing to do in difficult situations in which decisions about genetics cannot be avoided. I can see why noted reviewers call it the best comprehensive book in print on ethics, genetics, and the Christian faith.

Fun book/series for young readers!

I LOVE this series! I was looking for some chapter books to read aloud to my 7 year old son, who isn't quite as motivated to read as I would like him to be (do all moms say this??), and I stumbled across this series. Funny, funny stuff. He loves the plots, is really intrigued, and can't wait to read every night. Only issue is that he gets so excited for these books right before bedtime that it's hard to get him to settle back down. Well-written and just plain fun to read. Suddenly my son realizes that books can be lots-o-fun!

I was a little hesitant that my daughter wouldn't go for a book like this, but she took to it like white on rice. The book does a deft job balancing spookiness and humor - the end result is a fun read.

My daughter liked the first two books in this series so much, I read them too.
This book is not at all what I expected, but I liked it as well.
Our Humble Yet Rather Desperate Narrator takes us on a journey with Pretty, Freekin, and Scary back to Franklin/Freekin's hometown, where no questions can be asked (a fact that led to Franklin's premature, mysterious death).
This is a story that has to be read to be believed.
We would also like to petition the International Order of Narrators to apologize to and welcome back Chris P. Flesh to their order -- and while they're at it, give Chris a nice plaque AND a shiny medal.

When I got to the story entitled "F is for Fornophilia" I had to put the book down for a moment and just wait until I could go on. In this story, the fetish subculture that likes to make furniture out of human beings is illustrated by a woman who claims "I am a lamp" as she is standing, sweating, with a lampshade on her head.

This isn't pro-porn, and it's not anti-porn, and it itself is not porn. What, in point of fact, is it? It's nothing I've ever seen before - honest. It's funny and horrifying, sexual and sterile, smart and blunt... if this could please become a new genre, I'll add a bookshelf to my wall for it.

Definitely the most interesting read this year. I read it for the insane sex, but I loved it for the insane humor.

I got Breslin's name from a blurb on the back of J Eric Miller's "Animal Rights and Pornography" and so got this book. "You're a Bad Man, Aren't You?" is a terrific collection. The stories are edgy but literate, and together they form a wonderful whole. I read more about Ms Breslin online, and she's quite interesting. I hope for an opportunity to read her novel on the porn industry when it's published.

The author, whom I saw once on Politically Incorrect, has a great knack for taking unexpected turns when you least expect it. What I thought was going to be a straight-forward book of dirty tales turns out to be a strangely heartfelt but still disturbing journey. I only hope to read more of her work in the near future.

Highly recommended reading (especially for new parents), Your Baby Treasures: Time Capsule by author Janet E. Reinhold is an explorative guide to the preservation of a parents cherished baby items. In the pages of Your Baby Treasures, the reader will find why some papers crumble over time and others stay nice; what makes a photo fade and what you can do to save it; how to keep baby clothes nice for years; why you can store a lock of hair but not a piece of cake; why many things need proper enclosures when stored together; what to consider when storing electronic media.

Practical and Inspiring....a loving tribute to your Little One!

Making a Time Capsule is truly a work of art, and who better to serve as Muse than your own baby-child?!!!

And I love my old baby stuff, don't you? Even in old photographs, I see the old patterns of blankets and flooring, old toys, old books, etc., and part of me is comforted. I love to look at these simple things, and remember being a baby. ;-) It's amazing how visceral and instinctive the memories can be, too. Later on down the line, not only will your grown-up child be thrilled and tickled, but your child's family and friends will recall their own childhood memories, too, as the capsule is opened and enjoyed.

Anyway, it's really interesting to read in this VERY READABLE BOOK about different materials and how long they last. I think my favorite section is "Choosing Baby's Items." I love the ideas...they are so creative!

I think the "Letters for the Future" ideas are so very sweet....and really really precious, especially if the parent might not be alive when the adult child opens the capsule. I think any parent would be giving their child a very beautiful gift to do this.

The Geneology section is also very interesting and gives me some ideas to trace my own and my husband's family tree.

All-in-all, a practical, easy-to-read, inspiring, and spunky little book that will guarantee the memories you save will be cherished and passed down to future generations.

Informative AND Enjoyable

Not only did I thoroughly enjoy reading this book, but I came away with a wealth of ideas for creating a time capsule for baby. I also found myself full of enthusiasm and confident that I now possess all of the knowledge required for successful completion of the project. I can strike out on my own in search of the correct materials to preserve my memories, now that I know exactly what I am loking for, or I can choose simply to order the materials individually or in "kit" form by using the order form in the back of the book.

I was hooked into reading the rest of the book when it began by explaining why I might want to make a time capsule in the first place. Then, without the use of confusing technical jargon, it clearly covers every aspect of time capsule creation from the memory selection process to the proper paper, ink, and preservation materials to use. There is a wonderful chapter on genealogy that provides just enough information to cover that important aspect of baby's life for inclusion in the time capsule.

This project could be undertaken by the parents OR grandparents of the baby. At the agreed-upon time of opening (twenty years is suggested), the "baby," who is now all grown up, is ceremonially presented with a wonderful gift of exquisitely preserved artifacts from the first year of his/her life. It is a gift of memory for the parents, but for the grown-up child, it is a gift of actually feeling, for the first time, what his/her first year of life must have been like--right down to world events that were occurring at the time. There can be no experience to compare with the unique chance to travel back in time and this book is the only ticket you need. It's well worth the price!

A three-level global masterpiece!

The AC-UNU Millennium Project has lived up to its reputation as a worldwide guiding light for futures studies by its production of this outstanding work. This year's report comprises three levels - a six-page print Executive Summary, and an 85-page print distillation of the mass of detailed knowledge found in a 1500-page CD-ROM. Together they allow a futurist to investigate to any desired level of detail the thoughts, predictions, and recommendations of the more than 1000 people who have contributed to the Project so far, including the 400 who took part in this year's discussions. In addition to detailed and updated analyses of the 15 Global Challenges already identified, the report presents the current status of the State of the Future Index (a measure of the near-term future of the human condition), comments on world leaders' talks at the UN Millennium Summit, and special sections on future issues of science and technology, sustainable development, and environmental security. The report has also greatly expanded its scenario collection, which now has over 400 scenarios or scenario sets, classified into domains.

The world of the future faces many problems. This report is an indispensable aid in organizing any attack on them.

The Millennium Project has been producing annual reports for five years. Its first report was arguably the most comprehensive, and authoritative which had been seen in the field of forecasting the future. Every year since it has got better. This year it has excelled itself, producing 1,500 pages of material (if you include the free CD bound with it) covering every important trend - from the future of women to globalization. Its panel in 2000 included 400 world leaders in their various fields, making the number more than 1,000 questioned since it started. As such it is an essential addition to the library of any manager involved in long-range planning - and, at just $, it may the bargain of the new century!

This book is an overview of the engineering profession like I've never seen before. Although it seems primarily written for high school and college students (and their parents), it also contains important tips for middle-school and elementary students. It belongs in every middle school, high school and college library and guidance office. Although it quotes some of the nation's top engineers and teachers, as well as engineering students, it isn't stodgy at all. Instead, it offers entertaining and easy-to-read advice on preparing for college and succeeding on campus and in the workplace, and also looks at salaries, employment trends, and fun things to do in the many engineering disciplines. It's a must-read for any student thinking about engineering as a career.

There's a critical shortage of engineers these days--and especially a shortage of women engineers--and this is a great guide for kids who might be considering the field or wondering exactly what being an engineer means. I got this for my daughter and several of her friends, and donated it to the career office at their school. The book includes descriptions of different engineering fields, the type of work you'd be doing, the salary you can expect--plus suggestions on which high school classes and extracurricular activities would be good to get a student ready to study engineering in college. The authors interviewed many engineers for realistic details and included info on innovative career paths, including Engineers Without Borders. Best of all--the book is easy to read and interesting.

The outstanding feature of this book is the style of the writing. The sentences are short and technical terms are expressed in every day Language. For more abstract concepts solid every day examples are used to explain the concepts. Many concepts which I have struggled with for years was made clear in this book. I hope Honea writes more. This Egyptian adventure with archeaology, oil and romance was great to read. Unlike so many of the mega-books of the genre, a lot happens in a little over 200 pages. Some humor and not-so-subtle jabs at big corporations adds to the readability.

A Spell-binding Story

Review Date: 2004-06-21
I stumbled across All This is So by sheer chance, when trying to find something else - a rare example of the randomness of the internet working favourably. I bought it because I thought it was possibly by my old high school English teacher, who had always seemed like a man who might have a novel simmering within. And it is indeed his work. Fortunately the book was available via amazon, but it is very sad that it doesn't have wider availability here as it is a very fine novel. Note to US publishers: snap it up! It's doubly sad that it is categorised as a SciFi book as it is in fact a novel of ideas rather than a space opera -if the book does have SciFi parallels it is with works like Doris Lessing's Mara and Dann or William Miller's classic A Canticle for Leibowitz.

I am a confessedly partial reader as I wanted to like the book, but even without that distant personal connection the book is extremely resonant. Hereward, the myth-inspiring central character, could have come from Chaucer's pen, but it also has muchmore contemporary literary parallels. As with writers like Philip Pullman, there is a strong moral dimension and the consequences of individual characters' actions ricochet around the oh-so plausible world Roe has created.

All This Is So is a massively satisfying and heady read well worth seeking out. Snap up a copy now and know you were an early adopter.

This is a truly beautiful novel. It explores all facets of emotion and human endeavour. Our greatest fears are confronted, as are our innermost needs, hopes and desires.
The great thing is that all of this is done within the framework of a fantastically enthralling STORY.
It is the story which pulls the reader along while below the surface are such high philosophical quandries explored. The places and events are described in a detail that is not-too-little and not-too-much and which does not spoon-feed the reader but rather allows his or her imagination some scope to interpret. You almost want some drawings but at the same time are glad not to have them.
The characters are many layered and include all types along the continuums of hero to villain and admired to pitied.
This book will appeal to many ages and many levels.
It is a superb story of a quest and yet has so many other levels, such as the philosophical and the many references to other great pieces of literature.

Read it because it is a really good tale; but there is so much more to this book.
I strongly encourage you to read this book. Then read it again!
