NOW it all makes sense! After reading THE LAMB'S SUPPER, I'll never look at Mass the same--nor should I. Scott Hahn ties the Book of Revelation, the liturgy, and the Communion of Saints together in one beautifully written work. Even after attending mass at least weekly for 58 years, I've never understood it to the degree that I do now--thanks to Scott Hahn. What a refreshing insight it is to see myself as an unworthy guest at the Lamb's feast--together with my parents who have passed on before me and all the saints and angels of heaven. Not only does the mass mean more, the communion of saints comes alive in its celebration. Thank you Mr. Hahn once again for your faith, your enthusiasm, and your knowledge--which you never fail to pass on with both humor and love.

Outstanding and easy to understand why there is so much importance placed on the Eucharist, particularly by Catholics, and where it is in the Bible to support it.

Measurement Meets the Stall
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-01
To 'stall' is human, to measure divine, is the key message from this book that highlights the tendency of us humans to resist change and thus accept less than perfection from our selves or our organizations. By naming `stalled' performance drivers - tradition holds you back, disbelief of new possibilities based on past experience stops you, misconception of actual facts, perceived unattractiveness of other options, poor communications, bureaucracy or just plain procrastination stalls things - the authors supply motivational materials so the reader will consider their eight-step process for 'stall-busting'.

1. Understand the importance of measuring performance
2. Choose an important process to measure
3. Find best practice for that process
4. Move beyond best practice
5. Imagine the world if perfection of the practice were possible
6. Act on this perfection now
7. Match people and rewards to induce perfection
8. Repeat steps 1 thru 7

As the authors say, most everyone talks about continuous improvement, but talk is not action. If it gets measured, it gets done, the saying goes. For the authors, if it gets measured, it gets improved. I should measure the time taken to read books and write reviews; well, maybe tomorrow.

The 2000 Percent Solution is not merely a strategic business thinking book but something more. It is a book that can lead you to find your personal stalls and eliminate them so that free from them, it will be easier to discover and eliminate the organizational stalls. These steps are essential in the effort to apply the author's suggestions for obtaining the 2000 percent solution and finally achieve exponential business success. The book is very comprehensive, it contains sixteen chapters. In the 1-8 chapters the authors explain the various kinds of personal and organizational stalls and propose an effective busting method, while in the rest chapters, there are various techniques for achieving the 2000 percent solution. It a great book!

How fast? Lots of tools to retread wheels of enterprise to increase productivity are in The 2000% Solution. This is not a one read book, but a series of valuable clear disciplines to habituate. Thank God for humor- the spoon full of sugar.

Don Mitchell makes a point, illustration from a wide range of business vignettes threaded with the funny sides of life. The flow of information is linear to me, one point connecting to the next. Some business reads are jumpy and harder for me to follow. I became self employed in 1973, (not knowing the term!) by 1979 hired my first employee. When recognizing I was in `business' I joined the local Chamber of Commerce and began reading business books. Some helped me sleep, not this one!

The 2000% Solution is the first book that has given me a quantum leap thinking process, to think in big significant moves forward. Dr. Mitchell gives simple methods to `do' these processes. One action I took was to chart my actions by the hour for several days to review what I am doing and what actions move me forward. This uncomfortable process is powerful.

Most traditional reads are usually from one person's view of one business or industry. The 2000% Solution malleable big leap `thinking process' alone is worth the read. The value of real stories of real people in real company activities- well - that makes it real to me.

The best thing reading this is FUN- the humor! Some are deliberate jokes and cartoons strengthening points made- then there are the funny real stories happening in business. Many times I laughed out loud. Humor is the no-calorie whipped cream on this delight!

I found this book a great help and have read it several times. It defines in simple terms how to unstall your life and business. It sets out a plan to find and eliminate various types of obstacles or stalls that impede the success in your business or personal life. The book has helped me reorient and remove the obstacles that are a hindress to the exponential growth that is possible within any business. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a way to get out of a rut and start moving forward and upward again

I first read "The 2000 Percent Solution" as part of a course for a Rushmore University doctoral program. It sparked in me the desire and determination to get more "bang for the buck" from my efforts, and provided a clear 8-step guide for doing so.

The guide to creating 2000 Percent solutions essentially helps you to see differently, and acknowledge the reality of your personal and organisational biases. It helps you undertake a wider search than you normally would in the quest for a solution. And it doesn't leave you content with the best solution you may have found, but has you project into the future to "see" what the future best practice is likely to be, and then begin now to implement it.

Applying the authors' ideas to my personal circumstances helped free my mind (an ongoing, never ending process) of a number of personal stalls and led directly to the creation of a management training and consulting company. And in spite of limited capital, the momentum of my take-off amazes acquaintances.

I keep my copy of "The 2000 Percent Solution" in my office, within easy reach, because I intend to read it over and over, to create an upward spiral of exponential gains in my life and work.

The skill of creating 2000 Percent solutions is a valuable one. Combined with the ability to engage in continual business model innovation (as taught in "The Ultimate Competitive Advantage" by Mitchell and Coles), it will guarantee business success long into the future.

I am a cradle Catholic and found this book to be very helpful at explaining the Catholic Mass. I no longer ask "Why do we do that?"

I read this book cover to cover and enjoyed it very much. It is easy to read and is organized thoughtfully inline with each step of the Mass.

This book takes you step by step through the Catholic Mass. Along the way, it suggests ways to help you maintain focus while praying. It gives very good insight about the different aspects of the Mass.

FYI, I enjoyed this book so much, I purchased the other three "How to" books - on Catholic Devotions..., read the Bible..., and the Sacramentals...

If you are new to the Catholic faith or are considering a return, consider my humble opinion about this book and the others.

I found all of these books very resourceful, useful, and interesting.

Each book is a gem. They will help you understand and guide you with your Catholic faith.

Helpful tool.

Growing up in the Catholic church, there are a lot of little things we're taught to do, but when someone asks us why - we may be stumped! The Catholic Church has a REASON behind everything! The more you know, the more you treasure the tradition! Don't just let mass become rote for you - understand the meanings and you will appreciate the depth of the mass. How thougtful were those who suggested these things for us to constantly reflect on God's wonder and love, our humanity, and the relationship and plans He has for us now and forever.

The How-To Book of the Mass: Everything You Need to Know but No One Ever Taught You by Michael Dubruiel is a book that will teach you everything about the Mass. Even if you have gone to Mass your whole life there still may be things you don't know. Well this book will tell you everything including when you should bow or genuflect and what the different books you use are for.

If you are still desiring Spiritual Enlightenment in a seemingly hopeless world, May I suggest you read My non-fiction book as well. (See Profile Above)

An absolutely wonderful explanation of the Mass we celebrate.

I have been waiting years for a book like this. It is a clear, concise, straightforward, and meaningful explanation of the entire Mass. It starts before we open the doors (which have significant and poignant meaning themselves), and continues to us standing outside those same doors after Mass, while explaining everything in between. The reasons and origins of all practices are clearly examined and have led to a much, much richer and more meaningful experience when I attend the Mass. I can't recommend the book highly enough. I am a cradle Catholic, and from the time the Mass was in Latin, all the way to the present time, I have never had a clear understanding of all parts of the Mass. Now I do.

I was president of an organization that loosely used Robert's Rules and have recently joined an organization that is adopting them. I found that most people won't bother to learn the rules. That means that those who know them are at a distinct advantage (hence the title of this review).

A found this book to be an excellent tool for me because I already had a working knowledge of the rules. It served as a refresher and also as a reference. The basic procedures are there.

However, for a "beginner" I would suggest looking elsewhere. The "In Brief" version does not adequately cover either the philosophy behind the rules or the details required to deal with real-life situations.

If you are a participant, you might be able to get away with this, but if you will be conducting meetings, get the unabridged version.

And now that we have covered all items on the agenda and there is no new business, I adjourn this review.

Spec-Ops Triumvirate

Review Date: 2009-05-03
These were my recent when-reading-does-not-otherwise-require-serious-concentration books. I'll review them together since they have considerable overlap and then cross post this review.

Why one might want to read these books together, or in quick succession, is that they cover Spec Ops, particularly counter terrorism, from the late 1970's to about 2004 and do so in a complimentary manner. For example:
- Mr. Pfarrer did 7 months in Lebanon and covers some of the complexity on the ground there. While Mr. Haney only did one (successful) counter sniper mission there, Mr. Smith gives a detailed account of the politics behind the whole mess.
- Mr. Haney did combat time during the invasion of Grenada, Mr. Pfarrer only heard about it from others and Mr. Smith again gives us the politics behind this operation.

Warrior Soul by Chuck Pfarrer - 4 stars

At first I was having feelings of regret over purchasing this book. The cover has a cheesy Hollywood photo of a Rambo wanna-be and the opening chapters have all the hallmarks of "military jock blows sunshine in ego inflating tall tale telling". Certain facts are a bit suspect. Take the following quote from the Author's Note, first page; "No SEAL has ever been captured, and not one teammate or body has ever been left in the field". I used to work with a guy who completed two combat tours in the Vietnam War as a Navy SEAL. He talked about the war on perhaps two occasions. The one I remember is the comment he made to another coworker about mining Haiphong Harbor at night and there was a relatively small but deadly explosive mishap underwater. Two SEALs were left in the water that night after the effort was made to recover the bodies. Given the extreme danger and great number of missions performed by SEALs I simply cannot believe others have not been unwillingly left behind under equally distressing circumstances.

By about chapter 4 ("Operator 156") Mr. Pfarrer gets into his own as a writer and the book flows rather seamlessly from then on. The author does a great job of relating the attitude/culture and abilities of the SEALs. Unfortunately, but by necessity I think, the facts not involving the author's personal life have a high degree of gloss. Operationally we get a good idea of what SEALs are capable of but not really how they go about fulfilling those capabilities.

One criticism of BUD/S comes to mind and if anyone reading this has an answer please feel free to leave a comment on this review. Training, particularly Hell Week, it seems to me, weeds out those less willing to suffer but also takes out a fair number of perfectly capable men. Sure training needs to be harder than combat but as the author himself points out some of the training crosses over the line from hard utility to plain stupidity. Washing out an entire boat crew because one or two members ring-out ends up removing one or more men who would otherwise have made a fully competent member(s) of the Teams. I guess maybe these guys are superstitious and if one is "unlucky" enough to get assigned to a wash-out prone boat crew then they don't want you or your bad luck on the Teams. To say the current system works well enough is to say `lets not find out if it can work better'.

Inside Delta Force by Eric Haney - 3 Stars

One thing I'll say for Delta Force members is that the mental stability of the men who are accepted into Delta is unrivaled. The SEALs are mostly crazy but have one redeeming mental quality - they can shut off the craziness to get the job done. Off hours there is no such restraint. And SEAL Team 6, the direct counterpart of Delta, is by far the craziest. Mr. Marcinko (founder of SEAL 6, known as "Mob Six" under his command) was Class-A egotistical bonkers and an insatiable thrill seeker. Just read his books if you don't believe me.

Because the war on terror (war against extremists) is ongoing, neither of these first two books gives us much insight into specific techniques and/or training. I suppose that is a necessary element since, even though much of that can be found out on the web, one can never be sure about the accuracy of strictly web-based information sources.

On the negative side Mr. Haney does not have the writing acumen of Mr. Pfarrer which interrupts the flow of his book. In his defense Mr. Haney has far less popular writing experience than Mr. Pfarrer (several major movie scripts) and, relatedly, may also not have had access to as talented an editorial group as someone with Tinsel Town connections. For example when Mr. Haney describes his encounter with an Army shrink; "`Haney,' he began in a sibilant voice". Seriously now, who, besides a parseltongued adept at Hogwarts, can reasonably be described as using a sibilant voice? People whisper when they talk sometimes but sibilance went out of the common parlance shortly after the days of Jane Austin. This type of airy language is used in conjunction with; "How dare that fat bastard speak to me that way" and the contrast is a bit distracting.

However, this book is a quick read and has a useful, if short, epilogue on the war on terror.

Killer Elite by Michael Smith - 4 Stars

This book has a dorky (if apt) title and reads like a summary report for a house sub-committee member in DC. The latter is both its strength and weakness. The book is a quick enough read and gives some good insight and back story on SEAL 6 and Delta and an indispensable treatment of the Activity. The authors' background in writing history shows and that's a good thing if you like reading history. Extensively end-noted there is enough ancillary information to keep one reading for quite some time on the subject.

Mr. Smith goes into more non-technical detail on how Spec-Ops was and is being used. So for instance we get to know just how many members of Delta, SEAL 6, etc there are at any given time (sorry but you'll have to read the book to find that out). His book also gives us some idea of the costs involved. My back of the envelope guess is that the major terrorist targets are costing our government (us taxpayers) somewhere around 5 billion each to track and put out of commission. That adds up to half a trillion dollars in just a few years - not a sustainable pace I think.

Taken together these books give a good picture of what kind of effort the US and a few allies (most notably the UK and Australia) are throwing at the War On Terror. These books might accomplish the proverbial help in sleeping at night except for one tiny little fact. Osama bin Laden is still a free man. Not as free as he would like to be but still free and he must be the most hunted man on Earth in these days. I find it more than a little disturbing, after reading these books, that we cannot bring him to justice.

And a couple of after thoughts:

Another facet of modern Spec-Ops warfare not directly addressed is suicide bombers. While it is clear that the most effective means of combating them is to target and take out the leadership* there does not seem to be anyway to stop the bombers proper except by happenstance. Terrorists that want something can be delayed until taken out but a suicide bomber just has to get close enough to the intended target and (boom) in no time the task is complete (*the leaders aren't too crazy or dumb - that's what the bombers are recruited for because they're too dumb to scratch together a coherent bombing plan or build suicide/homicide vests).

Lastly, there also seems to be no plan for building economies that breed people of responsible global citizenship. Not that this is a task for Spec-Ops but what good is it to chase and kill the current terrorist mastermind while waiting for the next one to show through some horrendously spectacular event?

The author's oddosey from deliquent highschooler, to military school, through college, ocs, BUDS training/elimination and then advanced training is facinating. The book profides a sustained view inside the soul of a true band of warriors. Young MBA's could learn a lot from study of leadership and organizational structure in the teams.

The operations were interesting although obviously limited in their selection and description due to restrictions. Others have complained of the lack of discussions of many operations, however, my feeling is that the author more than makes up for that in the depth of the detail and of the many sub operations as part of the long deployment in the middle east.

The discussion of the transformation of Seal Team 6 from its original personality cult into something close to the other teams was enlightening.

Where Pfarrer really distinguishes himself is the weaving of the story of his personal life into the book. His transformation from near dropout to military school and the associated change in his behavior was great. His descriptions of his loves and breakups are told with real time passion. He cuts himself no slack as to his personal failings although one wonders how much can be attritubted to living a random, high adrenalin life, often alone, far from home and surrounded by women seeking adventure with the worlds few true warriors.

The Seals must train like tomorrow might bring the Super Bowl, Olympic High Diving Finals, mother of all marathons or shootout at the OK corral in some randomly selected place from Holidays In Hell. However, with the addition of Roman tradition that the loosers are eaten by the lions. Team 6 required further separation from his "brothers" in the other teams. Further adding to the adrenalin shocks is the randomly jerked leash associated with the micro management of war by the flotsam and jetsam found high in the halls of power in DC.

The book is well written although some editing errors still remain. It is written as a first person account, not a top down history of the events. It excells in achieving its goal, telling the life of a warrior soul in today's world.

A crisp and informative account of one SEAL's career. Authentic and written by a (now) professional writer and screenplay author. So much written about the SpecOps community has been pumped up, selfserving ego tripping (Rogue Warrior et al) that it is refreshing to read an interesting and factual (I believe) account of SEAL operations and training. This book is more than sensational glorification of a violent and dangerous profession; it emphasizes the dedication and self discipline needed to endure physical and mental hardships almost beyond belief. The Kindle edition was well formatted with only a few minor hyphenation mistakes and the included photographs were pretty good. One thing that comes across loud and clear in this account is that SEAL operators are usually intelligent and resourceful, not just tough. We are blessed as Americans to have such men standing between us and evil.

We were really enlightened by the book, The House that Love Built. We kept expecting some information to appear in the Habitat for Humanity newsletters, but as you know, nothing ever appeared. Reading the book was very informative, but it really made us sick to our stomach for what they did to you and Linda. I must say you and Linda did not let it destroy you. You all most certainly have the Lord backing you to overcome this tragedy and accomplish what you have done.

What a tender love story between Millard and Linda! I looked up their two websites and enjoyed the great photo galleries and wonderful articles about new projects. The Fullers have made such a difference in the world for so many years. Their energy astounds me. Bettie did a superb job of telling their story and making it intriguing. Now, I truly understand the greedy mentality of the people who ousted Millard from his position at the Habitat for Humanity. What shysters! Sounds like Millard and Linda are much better off doing their own thing and having more control. All's well that ends well.

This is the story of an incredible couple. If it was fiction you would say, "ah, this is unbelievable." Since it's real life, you say to yourself, "how is it possible?" One incredible event after the other. I'm sure when people heard their story in person, they would say, "you should write a book about this." Well, here it is. I noticed as life happened to them, each time they turned within. Their faith is so powerful that it made me take a good look at mine and do some upgrading. If they could accomplish great works like this, then so can I. I now think bigger. I now trust more. I recently was honored with an award after seeing the list, pages of them, of awards that Millard and Linda have received. I know the secret of awards, they inspire you to do greater things. May you read this book and be moved, inspired and become such a gift to the world that you two shall be awarded.

Sweet story of the founders of Habitat for Humanity. I loved how he learned so much in business and was able to walk away from it all to become greater than the norm. They have drive and I'm happy they pulled so many behind to make the world better for everyone. More of this!

A Testament to What God Can Do

"The House that Love Built" is a testament to what God can do through open and willing minds and hearts. Bettie B. Youngs takes Millard and Linda Fuller from their childhood years through college and huge financial success to a crisis that led eventually to a radical new way of living.

In 1968 the Fullers, working closely with Clarence Jordan, co-founder of the Christian community Koinonia outside Americus, GA, laid the foundations for what would become Habitat for Humanity. The world-wide success of Habitat for Humanity under the Fullers' leadership is legendary, but in 2005 the Fullers were fired by the Board of Habitat for Humanity International, who wanted the organization to look more like big business than a Christian ministry. Youngs is able to relate the facts behind this shameful ouster without bitterness or recrimination--and to tell of the Fullers' faithfulness to God's call to eliminate poverty housing throug the newly organized Fuller Center for Housing. An inspiring story of faith at work and of the power of God to transform lives.

This was a pretty decent read -- we practice a lot of these at my workplace but I think what this book really shows is the attitude of an entrepreneur.

An unorthodox approach to running a business

Ricardo Semler calls himself a maverick, but he's actually a visionary. Semler, now 49, was way ahead of the curve 25 years ago when he radically altered the structure and philosophy of his father's company, Semco. Long before most businesses acknowledged that employees were thinking, feeling human beings and not timecard-punching robots, Semler rebuilt the infrastructure at Semco, eliminating layers of bureaucracy and allowing employees to decide their own fates. They determined their own schedules, pay scales and dress codes. Semler drastically reduced paperwork; he restricted memos, for example, to a single page. He believed that empowered employees, freed of their corporate shackles, would be motivated, creative and productive. You may find some aspects of that approach unrealistic or totally impractical for your organization. You may even think Semler is crazy. At the very least though, getAbstract believes executives should give careful consideration to his approach. His innovations are still relevant, even a quarter of a century later.

I had the pleasure to meet Alan and participate last week in one of his live workshops -- wow, what an inspiring message! I appreciate his generosity and helping spirit. His advice is relevant on a personal level, as well as any profession you're in and whether corporate or social sector. I bought 2 copies of this book (one for a friend who couldn't attend) - and immediately started reading it on the plan to a b-school reunion that day. And I can't wait to get "Lessons from the Sandbox" too. We are indeed surrounded by geniuses... and I thank Alan for sharing his!

Dr. Gregerman has done a wonderful job of breaking down the complex ideas into simple applications for recognizing the good in ourselves and those around us. His stories and guides on how we can make a difference were astounding yet fun, insightful and practical. We are currently taking these innovative thoughts to address daily activities on our team and, using his simple beacons for genius, recognize how we each can make a difference in those we touch on a daily basis. I would highly recommend this book to any person or professional interested in making a difference in the lives of others!! Thanks for the genius.

If you have to work with people who speak a different language, then this book is a treasure. It is an easy book to read, and the way it teaches is inspiring. I could not have done all the difficult jobs I did working with an international team if I had not read this. Highly recommended.

When I was introduced to this book in March of 2007, I was just putting the finishing touches on a communication workshop of my own, Mastering the Art of Listening. As a business coach, I long ago realized that most breakdowns in companies as well as relationships, occur in a world of dysfunctional communication. What inspired me about this book was it was if I had read Thomas' mind when creating my own workshop. I am now leading Communicate or Die workshops for businesses and my own workshop for relationships. A must read if you own a business or work for one, especially in a bigger corporation.

I have read this book a few times over the years and always been empowered to communicate more effectively when I read it again. In the last months I have been studying the book's material, like my life depended on it as the title indicates. I read for 20 minutes each day, highlight sections and writing observations into my journal. It is one of the best books on communication I have read and studied and as I take on a new and bigger challenge, my daily study is an imperative.
The book puts me into an environment where I am conscious of my speaking and how I listen to people, of effectiveness and forward motion. To share Communicate or Die's wisdom and tools with my associates and clients, I have ordered a special edition of 750 copies with our own brand on the cover. It is to be my gift to herald in a new and prosperous 2007. I consider it a small and high-leveraged investment in the leadership of my volunteers and colleagues and essential for the task that we have taken on in the world - the end of rape on earth.
