I enjoyed this book very much. After spending many hours researching my Scots-Irish ancesters and reading several books about their plight in helping to settle this country, it was very interesting to read about the parts played by the Women of the Frontier. The Socts-Irish women played a much bigger part in that settlement than most of us realize. I have now read several of Billy Kennedy's books about the Scots-Irish migration into and within this country. All of his books have been very well written and extremely enjoyable to read.

Word Up

"The Word from Below" is a fine book of interesting, vital literary criticism. It's a real breath of fresh air, for Langbaum has the confidence in his own literary judgment to discuss and express his thoughts on literature in beautifully clear prose that's a pleasure to read in itself--no postmodern jargon, no citations from theory critics misused as premises or proofs, no radically-leftist snobbery. Not that he's got his head stuck in the sand. Several passages show that he is more than aware of this type of criticism and of its strengths and weaknesses, but he has his own priorities. If I had to express it in a nutshell, he's interested in tracing a new form of modern spirituality in literature, one characterized by moments of aesthetic epiphany triggered in the individual by contemplating nature--one that finds the sacred within such subjective psychological states instead of in a god "out there" somewhere. This tendency has its roots in the Romantic movement in poetry, especially with Wordsworth, and develops in diverse ways: Browning's poetic monologues, Modernist poetry and fiction (Joyce after all coined the term "epiphany" in the sense used here), even the historical fiction of Norman Mailer of all things. And if you think of cold scientific theories like Darwinist evolution and Freudian psychology as challenging these kinds of humanistic, spiritualistic values in literature, Langbaum argues counter-intuitively and convincingly that instead they deepen and empower them, fortifying them with complexity and toughness. As Mr. Spock might say, fascinating! This is the way literary criticism should be done. Highly recommended.

The essays included in this book are:
1. Freud and Sociobiology: Reflections on the Nature of Genius
2. Can We Still Talk about the Romantic Self?
3. The Epiphanic Mode in Wordsworth and Modern Literature
4. Wordsworth's Lyrical Characterizations
5. The Victorian Idea of Culture
6. Is Guido Saved? The Meaning of Browning's Conclusion to "The Ring and the Book"
7. Browning and the Question of Myth
8. A New Look at E.M. Forster
9. The Importance of Trilling's "The Liberal Imagination"
10. The New Nature Poetry
11. Mailer's New Style
12. Pound and Eliot

Very nice summary of the war

Review Date: 2001-05-23
In the many history books he has written for young people, scholar Don nardo has always managed to present all the basic, important, pertinent facts about his subject, and then throw in some interesting, little-known details besides. He does the same thing in this excellent, well organized, and extremely well documented volume on the War of 1812. Mr. Nardo's prose is always lively, but in some parts of this book, notably the famous "great chase" of Old Ironsides by some British warships and the American naval victories on the Great Lakes, his descriptiions are better termed rousing, suspenseful, and uplifting. Adults will get almost as much out of this book as kids.

The Impossibility of Representation
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-21
I remember that I once asked the author to define postmodernism. The discussion had arisen because I had erroneously thought that the novel was in real danger of being rendered an obsolete form. My mind had conceived hideous scenarios that included best- seller lists being topped by commentary and analysis."Des," so I says, gesticulating rather vaguely at his dissertation, "what's all this about?" His succinct reply went, "To give you a very brief answer, you could say that literary postmodernism [here, you can read this to mean literary theory] is the phenomenon of books about books."

.....for the cognoscenti out there, this may serve as only a most basic and poorly expressed outline of literary theory, but I think that, at least in this instance, we have an example of a book about books that is, in its own right, a real book. The author has set himself some incredibly difficult tasks: to attempt to capture the combinatory essence of Joyce/Freud/Dos Passos as a composite that mirrors the life of the city; to search for the sense of apotheosis/catharsis that lurks only on the periphery of this period of lierature (most of us make do with expanations of mood in a given section of text that has the almost banal effect of a 'you-know-I-mean); and all this to be completed whilst maintaining a suitably academic gravitas(=tone).
Anyway, I'm happy to state that the author has managed to do the above, whilst in addition delivering a real sense of narrative flow (the section that develops the epitaphic in Joyce's work seems particularly convincing) - I hope to see more of his work.

The poems touch upon autobiographical moments
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-12
Yellow Swing is a work of free-verse poetry that reflects the author's discovery... they are like a hammock in that one must let go for the relationship to swing back to oneself and prosper, and to clutch one tightly will result in no movement at all. The poems touch upon autobiographical moments, such as the author's childhood and memories of her parents, as well as experiences of travel and romance, with some verses addressing political problems of today's world. A bold statement from the heart. "Changing Landscape": The boat is our bed, and you sleep, / in morning light, hands curled at your thigh. / In the night they lengthened ropes, set anchors. // White flicks across your brown chest / like waves at a shoreline, / you are a changing landscape // as I am, my hands, my skin...
