This book of poetry is the first i've ever read for my own pleasure. It's hilarious, thought-provoking and just delightful without seeming stupid. I can relate to everything the poet goes through, and the experiments wtih form are great. There are poems, essays, paragraphs. Overall, an excellent book and i can't wait to read her next one!

This book is great for historians and for genealogists. There is a new edition in soft cover with added and updated pages (264 pages), The original title was "Irish Settlers on the American Frontier". The title of the new edition is Missouri Irish and is just now being released.

I bought this book for a class on Modern African Literature, and I have never been a fan of reading poetry or plays. However, I absolutely loved the collection presented in this book. First off, African plays and poetry are very different that those of other parts of the world, mainly in the way that they are presented and meant to be performed. Because of this, I was able to really envision what was happening; also, I thought the topics of the plays were great, especially those set in South Africa during apartheid. Overall, great book!

Beautifully written. With the breadth, depth and insight of a great professor, Matz boils down complex ideas and movements to their most fundimental components, and presents them in a conversational style that somehow preserves the fascination of the original concept while being easy-to-read.
In this book, I found myself delighted by several "eureka!!" moments...where Matz answers or asks an important question in a way that makes sense on an intuitive and intellectual level. It is exciting to read someone this gifted.
I would also recommend this author's (more specialist) text on Literary Impressionism.

Poems in Groups and Why

Review Date: 2007-03-21
This is one of my favorite books of literary criticism of poetry. If you have ever wondered why and how poets group their poems into sets, this is the book for you. What makes a successful grouping? Which poets made successful groupings of poems and why do these sets work? This is a great book for poets who are wondering how to combine a pile of poems into a sequence. In music a piano sonata may have a first movement (sonata-allegro) a slow second movement, a minuet or scherzo third movement and a finale rondo or sonata-rondo. How do poets set up similar patterns in their work. What can a poem gain by its placement in a sequence? Why might a poet rearrange poems in a sequence? I find this book fascinating, and young poets would do well to take a look!

Extensive & Informative

It is truly a shame that most people who pick up this anthology will probably read it as an addendum for a class they are taking. In that respect, it is both a veritable well of knowledge and a framework for ongoing debate on the merits (or shortcomings?) of modernism. But for the casual reader, the one piqued by Eliot or Woolf or Williams, this anthology is extraordinary. The sheer depth and breadth of information encapsulated in essays, poems, excerpts, and short pieces should shed light on the difficulty of explaining-even categorizing-Modernism. Those who don't feel forced to read these revolutionary writers-even those who do-will surely glean some insight into the various modes of 20th century literary expression.

What is especially intriguing about this anthology is the manner in which it is compiled. Four so-called "Continental Interludes" situate theories of Dadaism, Futurism, Surrealism (along with the Frankfurt School cabal) within the Modernist context. The various writers are placed according to the mode of thought they espoused (or rejected). If you choose to read this 1,000 page tome in a linear fashion, you will gain a greater appreciation for the evolution and infrastructure of Modernism. Which doesn't necessarily mean to say you will completely understand Modernism at the end-though I firmly believe this convolution adds to the general appeal.

Whether you are interested in the mythic structures of Yeats, Joyce's utterly idiosyncratic style, Gertrude Stein's avant-garde detachment, or simply Modernism as a whole, this book is quite informative. The amount of cross-referencing and cohesion is astounding: Williams writing about Joyce, Loy writing about Stein. It's all here. Annotations are immensely helpful, as are the (sometimes) extensive biographies. I especially enjoyed the section on Pound and his essay on the linguistic and poetic superiority of Chinese characters. There's something here for everybody.

If you are interested in Modernism, which is probably the only way that you heard about this wonderful book, you need to have access to this book. It focuses on the Harvard Philosophers--Josiah Royce, William James, and George Santayana--at its beginning. Then it moves on to study Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, and T. S. Eliot. Even if you are not interested in any of the people specifically mentioned in the book, you will attain a better understanding of what exactly Modernism entails by reading it.

Well written and researched book. Reading this book not only helps one understand the history of Monacan Indian nation but provides another window into understanding American history - especially from another perspective. Seeing references to some of my ancestors only heightened the joy of the read. This book is a great read for anyone desiring to broaden their own understanding of the period, the era and the people of colonial America.
