Review Date: 2007-07-29
The fragmentary calendar plate from Coligny (near Lyons) apparently dates to the second-century AD, although the Gaulish calendar engraved on this plate is plainly the result of a long transmission process. The 25-year-cycle calendar, the final system of this transmission process, probably originated early in the first-century BC, before Caesar's conquest. It is within this late pre-Roman period that the calendar took on its final form and notation to enter a two-century long transmission process. Since only 40% of the original Coligny calendar survives as a fragmentary mosaic, the reconstruction of the original whole depends upon recognizing repetitive patterns and filling in the missing sequences of these patterns. The most significant of these patterns is that discerned in the schemes of the TII and the N lunar/solar counting marks and their associated notation. Here the chronological cycles implied by these notational patterns are explained in detail. Also provided is a glossary of the functional and etymological significance of terms utilized in these daily notational patterns. The fragmentary calendar is brought to photographic completion utilizing the original wording and engraving found on the surviving fragments.

This Book, as is Peter Berresford Ellis's Dictionaty of Celtic Mythology, is in my opinon deserve 6+ stars, not 5. "Irish Mythology" is not really covered in his "Celtic mythology book, Celtic Mythology is really a continuation of of this book, covering a much broader scope. I have over a dozen "Dictionaries and Encyclopedias of Celtic Mythology, Legend and Lore" and the scope and breadth of the information covered by Mr. Ellis is excellent. As you look up each entry, a full explanation is given, and if your curosity is peaked, it is easy to look up all other referances that are mentined in the text. Stories of Irish mythology, that I didn't fully grasp before, are very clear and understandable.

This book is a great combination of a travel log, background information on the Celts and personal spiritual challenges. Each chapter deals with a specific location, saints and gives good information on them. Then at the end of the chapter there is a time of personal application of the chapter's content. There aren't any religious barriors or personal agendas that came through in the book. The final comment is the chapters are small enough to fit into a busy lifestyle, but long enough to cover the topic.

Phantasmic Exploration of Arboreal Altercations and Allusions

This author is a true Bard and Namer to her brothers the Trees. She interprets their meanings, their power, and the history of their cosmogony. Much like the famous reconstructionists, she recognizes that the sign and the signified are not neccessarily the same when it comes to truly diving into the unique marks of the Ogham [Ogam]. She poetically enumerates on the history of the signs, their religious significance, as well as the many "differing" Ogams that have existed throughout time, from as far back as as we can reach, through the latest dicipherings... Ellen Evert Hopman is a sister to Trees, and can hear their countless whispers and songs, which is what makes this book so magical. -- Crow Birchsong

Lossing is directly responsible for the kindly view that the Shakers came to have in the eyes of America. This was the original article along with his sketches and illustrations which were finished out in water color before the wood engravers went to work. Absolutely astonishing details.
