Dear Drew Barrymore's ghost writer: you suckReview Date: 2008-07-01
Surviving childhood abuse and drugsReview Date: 2008-06-07
Barrymore was born into the acting profession, coming from a long line of acting talent extending back nearly 200 years
Faced with an abusive father, the execrable and vicious degenerate John Drew Barrymore( it is shocking to read of the physical and emotional abuse he subjected the little girl to) , a mother who was not always there, and nasty schoolmates, she drifted into the company of an older crowd and began her descent into drugs and alcohol by nine, when she began drinking alcohol, began smoking marijuana by ten (offered it by a friend's mother),and was snorting cocaine at twelve. She also craved the approval of boys on whom her self-esteem depended.
This is her story of why she took refuge from her unhappy young life in parties, alcohol and drugs, and her difficult and painful rehabilitation. but she succeeded. I found myself really feeling Drew's pain and empathized with what she went through.
Drew wanted to be an actress by five.
I really admired how she told her abusive pig of a father to get out of her life, when she was eight, after achieving success in E.T
She also tells of her work on movies such as Firestarter, Irreconcilable Differences,Babes in Toyland and Far From Home.
Drew talks about the support given to her by Steven Spielberg who she says gave her the best advice she ever been given on acting : "Drew, you can't act your character, you gotta be your character."
She made it though and in by 16 had cleaned up her life, to go on to a string of successes in a series comedies and dramas . By the late 90's her bubbly personality made such movies as Ever After, The Wedding Singer. Charlies Angels and Never Been Kissed a lot of fun and charming to watch.
It is a sad story of a child whose life was marred by what no child should go through, but who overcame her self-destructive habits and proved those who said she was burned out at 13, so wrong. How she repaired her life is incredibly inspirational. Drew is offering advice to young actresses entering rehab these days: ""If you don't pull it together for yourself, no one else will," she says in the March issue of Vogue. "That's coming from a person who had to try it all ... and who still loves to have a good time."
Remember this book was sritten when Drewwas only fourteen years old.
One has to admire her.
I hope she will be making films for decades to come.

A salute to stay-with-it-nessReview Date: 2006-01-18
She's seen the depths and the heights and knows the difference. She's drank the champagne (even though she was 8 at the time) and sipped the sewer water and prefers the former. She's been on the carpet and also received carpet burns on her knees when she was short rent.
Thank you Drew for being an inspiration to all the preteens with drinking problems ... they don't have to suffer in silence anymore.

Fascinating insights into one of the cultural treasures of our generation.Review Date: 2008-05-14
This book is a riveting tale about the creative process, how a play goes through its evolution to get to Broadway, and how every once in awhile a theatrical miracle can happen which changes everyone's lives. "Rent" is such a miracle. I just saw the play once again on Broadway this past weekend. I took my teenaged daughters to see it. After eleven years, it is finally closing down some time this year. If you cannot get to New York to see the play, rent the movie. It's not as good, but almost.
I loved this book, and recommend it to anyone who has ever overcome adversity to pursue a dream.

Flanagan, one of the first American journalists to champion U2, is a confidant of the band, but it doesn't stop him from critically appraising their work. The book starts with U2 taking the last flight into East Germany before reunification, and follows the band all the way through the writing of Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and the tour that surrounded the two albums. It's probably U2's most creatively active period, and it's our good fortune that a writer of Flanagan's calibre tagged along for the ride. A must-read if you're at all interested in U2.

Essence Tupac!!!Review Date: 2005-10-23
very informativeReview Date: 2002-02-11
I myself have a genuine interest in politics, philisophy and poetry similarly to 2pac and i felt that i could relate to some of the lyrics he wrote. This book on tupac gives a deeper insight to the rap artist not only his music and talent but to his life it shed light on many differant topics from differant aspects and i found it very inspirational. What i particularly liked about this book was the way it presented both sides of the story (with the rape case) and i felt this ruled out any bias.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has a love for reading regardless of whether they have a genuine interest in rap this book not only looks at his career but looks at his inspiration, ambition, life and above all recognised him as more than a rap artist but as a human being and who he actually was!!!
Why do kids still admire Tupac?Review Date: 2005-08-04
Tupac had "Thug Life" tatooed on his stomach and he lived the life of a misogynist thug. He was disrespectful to everyone around him. Perhaps, as Quincy Jones suggests in the forward, Tupac could've changed into a positive force had he lived past 25. However, this book, and his own words, show him to be a negative influence on everyone he had contact with. It is very sad that he died at such a young age. It is even sadder that so many youngesters know who he was but cannot tell you about the lives of people who have accomplished great things with their lives. I have my work cut out for me next school year.

Like Shining Amber, with a touch of SapReview Date: 2007-10-10
I did dock a star because the messages in the book that accompanied the song occasionally came off as a little too..mushy. I'm really not that harsh a critic, not of books like these, but the beautiful words of inspiration were, a couple of times, replaced by words that were definetly too syrupy for my taste. I prefer truly moving messages and stories to speak for themselves, but it occassionally seemed like the authors wanted to hammer the point home, overdo the sentimentality, and even make their message serious and cheerfully bouncy at the exact same time (trust me, that doesn't work.) For ex: throughout the book, the lyrics of the song are printed in large bold letters in order to differentiate them from the authors' separate words of inspiration. Usually, the pages featuring the lyrics had no other words on them, but at one point, right above the words of Womack's moving song, the authors' placed a bulletin that said, "Attention! This is BIG stuff!" Considering the fact that Leann's song more than speaks for itself and doesn't need any extra emotional boosting, I found those additional words annoying and almost jarring to the flow of the song and its message.
Elsewhere in the book, as I mentioned before, the sentimentality goes into overdrive. One page is dedicated entirely to love and begins with the words, "Love, love, love. You have to love." Again, I got that idea the first time. It's nice to compliment the song with additional words of motivation, but we don't need an interpretive page with every selection of the song. In another part of the book, while speaking of youth, the narrator says, "Ah, youth..new skin, wide smiles, clear eyes..the future so bright. If only we could bottle it up, sip it now and again.." This sounded more to me like a bad commercial for a fountain of youth than a motivational speech. I don't mean to sound cynical, I usually love gift books, but the tone in this one was sometimes just too sweet for my taste.
I also didn't particularly care for the version of the song in the bonus CD. There's a mainstream version with soft rock music and female voices in the background (which I prefer) and there's a country version with male voices in the background and the occassional awful twangy instruments; this one's the latter. If you like country music, good for you, but I don't like the country version of this song.
There are plenty of good points of this book to make up for the disappointments, of course. The song is wonderful, whether you hear it or read it, and some of the separate words in the book were lovely to read. My favorite part of the book's text, other than the song, was a beautiful little haiku that the authors wrote called "You", celebrating every individual. The photographs are also gorgeous, from grinning children to nature scenery. A beautiful package, altogether.
Now, if they'd only make a gift book celebrating the beautiful song "Private Malone"..

Excellent materialsReview Date: 2008-10-01
His book Fretboard Theory and the accomplanying DVDs are not filled with practice exercises... rather, they are a road-map that points out what you really need to learn and study. For example, he suggests starting with the five pentatonic scale patterns, and then suggests many songs to learn that use these specific patterns.
The book is short on how to go about learning the scales other than via the suggested songs, but does an excellent job at teaching theory as it relates to the fretboard and using it in a practical way. Which is exactly the point: practical and consise fretboard theory. Not fretboard practice exercise book.
Desi backs these materials up with free song riff TABS, extra videos on youTube and iTunes, etc. All of these materials are first rate in production quality, especially the DVDs. Well worth the money, especially if you are self-motivated to practice with a little focus each day.

One Of The Best Instructional Books!Review Date: 2008-09-05
Then, through half-hearted searching on Amazon, I came across Desi Serna's DVD, "Guitar Modes." Instructional DVDs for guitar are usually very low on my wish list for learning stuff, so my interest level was equally as low based on past expectations and results with this teaching format.
I read the rave reviews for the DVD and visited Desi's website to get a feel for this person I'd never heard about. I was impressed, but that didn't stop the caveat, "If it's to good to be true..." from coming to mind. Nevertheless, I went ahead and ordered it from Amazon.
After receiving and watching the DVD(And several "Aha!" moments later), I knew I found what I was looking for. The video quality is exceptional and Desi's teaching style is exceptional too. It was well worth the investment with no regrets on my part.
With that being said, and remember I've already stated my low expectations for guitar instruction on DVDs, I didn't even hesitate to order the entire bonus package of DVDs plus the Fretboard Theory book from Desi's website. And even though the "Guitar Modes" DVD is also part of the package, I didn't mind because the discount price was well worth it...That means I've got two copies of the same DVD. I would like to point out that the DVD on pentatonic scales is the most basic of the set and you might feel a little short-changed if you're an intermediate guitar player like myself. That's another thing I'd like to point out, the material, in my personal opinion, seems geared more towards intermediate players. But regardless of your level of playing on guitar, there is something here for all of us.
At first, the Fretboard Theory book held the least amount of interest for me, because I really wanted to watch the DVDs. I watched them all without ever once cracking open the book beyond a cursory glance. When I finally did get to the book and began studying it in earnest, I realized what a gem it was...And still is. Desi's excellent teaching style in the DVDs comes across in the book, which makes it seem like you're watching while you're reading. You could definitely learn a lot from the book alone, but the two teaching formats complement each other so perfectly, I think it's only commonsensical to make that extra expenditure for the bonus package(No, I am not an associate to nor a personal friend of Desi's, though his friendly and attentive e-mails do give you that sense).
The least you can do, which is the most when compared to nothing, is to get the book. You won't regret it. It will serve you very well for learning and later on as an excellent source of reference. The book comes with spiral binding; I wish all guitar instruction books were spiral-bound. It's so much easier than having to splay a book's spine every time I open it...very awkard.
I'd like to add one last thing: There's 40 page book titled. "Scale Chord Relationships: A Guide To Knowing What Notes to Play-and Why" by Michael Mueller and Jeff Schroedl. The book comes with a CD and is available here on Amazon. I think you'll find it a useful supplement to Desi's Fretboard Theory book.

I'm adding an update to the above review: There is another book w/CD that might be of interest to anyone working with Desi Serna's Fretboard Theory book. I use Desi's book to reference from and make recommendations because it's one of the best instructional books around.
Melodic Arpeggios by Mark Galbo is, in my opinion, another book that complements Desi's book...Most notably, and for obvious reasons, the sections covering arpeggios in Desi's book. Galbo's combining of modal-scales with arpeggios to create melodic solos is done very tastefully on the CD examples, as well as the solo w/guitar and percussion accompaniment at the end of each section. You are also given the opportunity to be a little creative with the jam tracks sans the solos.
The jam tracks are going to be especially useful, not only for what is taught in this book, but also for applying what you learned about arpeggios in Desi's book. I did and it made a world of difference compared to running through the arpeggios without a musical reference.

Sweetly VintageReview Date: 2008-09-28
If you like old musical instruments, especially of the 60's variety, even more especially of the Beatlesque variety, than this book will make you drool. Literally. Luckily for everyone involved, it has very glossy pages that resist drool well.
This tome elevates a much neglected player in the Beatles phenomenon to the spotlight...the instruments. When you are the most popular band in the universe you get your choice of a lot of equipment and this book highlights those choices.
The pictures that this book uses are fabulous. They are bright, clear, and detailed. Here you have a chance to see these magical instruments up-close and analyzed. it's the kind of book that you could read start to finish, in small chunks before bed, or in smaller chunks while on the throne.
Babiuk organizes this book by years, so it is easy to see the progression of instrumentation that the Beatles used. I prefer this to having things organized by instrument type, which would have been the other choice. Each entry gives a lot of great information about the particular guitar, drum, or amp, and includes quotes from the Beatles themselves where applicable. Reading this book is like discovering that your best friend has a really hot sister you never noticed because you were too busy playing an awesome video game. It opens a whole new dimension on a previously explored relationship.

The reading I'd done on Rich Mullins previously taught me that he was an incredible person, but the book confirmed his devotion to Jesus Christ as well as his struggles to live faithfully. I was encouraged, amused, saddened, yet most of all inspired to keep contending for the faith.
The author's friendship with Rich Mullins came through - I only wish that it went into more detail and told me more.
I loaned the book to a friend, also a fan of Rich Mullins, and she said that it encouraged her greatly.
