This little book could've saved me 15 years of educating myself through workshops, classes, conferences, and writers groups. If you are just getting started in the publishing process, this book is a must-have. Knowing the background life of an editor helps writers understand that we are not the "center of their universe." (You'd be surprised how many writers believe that!) Terry includes many resources, Web sites, and crucial appendices that are necessary in writing a SUCCESSFUL proposal. He provides great anecdotes that keep the flow going, so that it's not so "dry" as to be unentertaining. The checklists will save hours of time in crafting your proposal. I highly recommend this book, and I carry it with me in my laptop bag wherever I go.

This book gives an insider's view of the book publication process. It is written from several angles of publishing, which gives much needed info to newbie writers and helps them to understand the process a book goes through to reach the shelves of a bookstore. Very helpful.

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn how to write a book proposal. Whalin, who has written more than 60 nonfiction books, has also worked as an acquisitions editor, so he's got a true insider's perspective of the somewhat daunting publishing process. With his "21 Secrets to Speed your Success", you'll find straightforward tips and information that'll give you the edge on how to capture an editor's interest.

I especially enjoyed the stories derived from his career in the publishing world, and found the many website URLs and the sample book proposal that sold for a six-figure advance to be very helpful. I highly recommend this book, and will admit that I actually have two copies: one at home, and one in my desk drawer at work for lunchtime reading.

Although I was unaware of the Christian-themed advice perhaps because I was not familiar with the author, I found this book extremely helpful. It is a must-read before submitting a non-fiction book proposal. The book is short, easy to read, contains several examples, and provides a step-by-step guide to writing the non-fiction proposal. After doing a substantial amount of research on the topic, I can honestly say that this was the best information I found on the topic.

Finally, help for the new writer!

FINALLY, someone has sent the elevator down from the Ivory Towers of the publishing world to us common folk on the ground floor!! Just in the first few pages I feel educated, aware and tuned in. Thank you for writing this book just for me!

He doesn't know the phrase "Keep it simple stupid" this book was written way before that...but he is the original "simple" method king! Don't waste a minute, order now. Imagine all you have to do is listen to your customer and ask them why...who would have ever thought selling was this easy!
2 thumbs up Mr. Bettger...2 elated thumbs up!

You may never have heard of Frank Bettger (prounced Betch-er)but thousands of sales professionals attribute their success to reading his book, "How I Raised Myself From Failure To Success In Selling."

Bettger gives practical timeless advice on improving your salesmanship. Simple things like listen more than you speak, continue your education, act with integrity, think of your customers needs more than your own may sound old fashioned, but they still work wonders.

I read Bettger every year and I never fail to pick up something new and valuable.

Highest Recommendation!

Cheers!

I must admit I was a bit sceptical when I first purchased this book. Couponing seemed an unlikely way to save any substantial amount of money. Boy was I wrong! This book has truly impacted our finances for the better. I am a new stay at home mother and this book really does work! I cannot believe how much money we save (or how much I wasted before). It does take time and effort to really make it work, but the savings are phenomenal. I now feel like I am contributing to our family's financial well being while staying home with our child as well. Who could ask for more! I strongly recommend this book!

When you're facing financial difficulty, the last thing you should be doing is buying consumer products like books, right? Except maybe this one and one by Mary Hunt on managing money. I remember my mom cutting coupons but I never exactly studied the science of it. Ellie Kay breaks it all down for you. you get taught about ways to save money I had no idea existed. It's a quick, easy read that you can gain skills from and immediately apply. It is the kind of lesson where you can use the tools you gain slowly then apply on a larger scale after you master some steps. It is definitely worth owning, reviewing, and referring to. I actually was directed to this book by another of Ellie's books I received upon becoming engaged--The New Bride Guide. That was a surprisingly refreshing, honest, and useful book--and believe me I read dozens of them! That one was not cliche either. Anyways, definitely pick up Shop,Save, and Share. It is worth your money and time--I promise whether you plan on cutting brand buying out of your habits or not. The beauty of learning the actual science is that you can apply it to your lifestyle at a level of stringency that is comfortable for you and your family.

A whole new revolution to saving!

I am so thankful to find such a Treaure! Ellie Kay has really done a work in educating the beginner to the novice shopper on saving and sharing!
My first jaw dropping moment was when I went to Wallie World and my total was $111.09 and after my coupons my total was $46.97! WOW.... I felt like doing the running man right there at the checkout! The cashier looked at me and said, "I want to go shopping w/you!" It was a really GREAT moment! I would've saved even more money if I had went to Meijer where they double coupons up to .50. But at the time Wal-Mart was my comfort zone. Even though Wal-Mart redeems your coupons at face value, Shop, Save, and Share teaches you to use your coupons in conjunction. For example, I had 3 coupons for Huggies: two $5 OFF coupons for diapers [got these by simply calling Kimberly-Clark and telling them what I thought of their product, Ellie teaches you this too] and 1 coupon for free wipes with the purchase of 2 packages. I never thought to do this.
Another thing I incorporated from this book was to call every manufacturing company and gave them feedback on their product, I received so many coupons, coupon booklets [all at higher price value and longer expiration dates - if any], put on their mailing list and received samples - just by calling! My shopping time has been cut in half, because she also teaches you to make your grocery/shopping list in aisle order of your store. My family has also incorporated giving to local charities, neighbors, and our local church on items that I receive free w/my coupons and items that only cost me a few pennies. For example Dog treats were on sale for $2, I had a coupon for $1 that doubled to me getting them FREE! I gave them to my neighbor and it blessed them and me too!
Although, I am a much better saver now, I still refer back to the book.
Thank you Ellie so much for all the help! You've helped me save money, spend more time w/my fam - instead of in the store and to simply bless others!

Shopping now has a whole new meaning!!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who does the bulk of their grocery shopping. Using many of the principles in Ellie's book I was able to purchase $91.82 worth of groceries and toiletries for only $28.73!! Many of the items purchased were not necessarily things that my family uses but because I was able to get many of them free I felt good knowing that I would be able to help our local food pantry.
And not only does this book help you save money but the stories are inspiring, and Ellie's own personal stories are hilarious.

This book is AWESOME. Since I read it I've been giving "coupon seminars" from my office. My coworkers are amazed by ability to cut my grocery bill by two-thirds.

I also found a distant cousin who is stationed at an air base in Germany and plan on sending my coupons to his family soon.

Ellie Kay has inspired me to save and serve.

When I received this book, I sat down and read it cover to cover, running my highlighter over all the key points. Now, I use this book, frequently as a resource. Shepard does a great job of explaining the concepts without being too wordy. It's only about 165 pages, but absolutely filled with valuable information.

If you want to learn how to sell more books on Amazon, this is the best book I've read on the subject. Shepard teaches:
How to title your book for Amazon search engines
How to create a book cover that favors Amazon sales
How to use several free tools available on Amazon to boost the
visibility of your book.
How to set discounts that work to the author greatest advantage.
How to go about self-publishing a book with Lightning Source
The reasons not to publish an eBook version of your book.
A pricing strategy for selling your book on Amazon.

Thanks to books like this one, self-published authors have a chance to succeed against our traditionally published competitors.

This book clearly dispells many of the myths and exposes the secrets of the publishing and the self-publishing industry. He does not day how to write your book, rather how to get it into print and distribution. He has terrific ideas about promotion and boosting sales and ultimately profit. He has 95% of submitted manuscripts, pays low royalties (approx 10%), and take up to three years to get your book into print, all the while usurping all the control of the content and layout.

I am a self publishing author myself and always researching ways to market books, especially here on Amazon. I thought I really knew all the tips, tricks and tactics of Amazon marketing...boy was I wrong!

Aaron Shepard lines it all out in an easy to understand guide to marketing your book to the best of your ability on Amazon. But, please do not let the name of the book fool you; it goes way beyond Amazon marketing, including how to actually build and create a book from scratch, covering concepts such as researching before writing, naming the book, interior design and which printing company to use.

If you are a self-publisher or aspiring author, add this book to your shelf. Mr. Shepard has years of experience in the writing field and is generously passing it on to us. I actually have it by my computer as I write for quick reference. I was so impressed by his simplistic and informative writing style that I am now ordering his other books.

"Aiming at Amazon" by Aaron Shepard is my favorite book right now because I successfully used it to create my already written book, "The Magi of Futurity", and have it listed on Amazon. After checking with others and reading the reviews for Aaron's book, I was very impressed and couldn't wait to order it. Within two months after reading this book, along with Aaron's "Perfect Pages" book, I had accomplished my goal. Thank you, Aaron, for producing such wonderful guides for aspiring authors!

Important Read For Contrarian Reasons

Review Date: 2008-08-14
Much of this book is spent explaining what should be obvious to the best managers, but which corporate culture and priorities tend to work against. In general, the book looks more at typical mistakes than at recipes for success. At the same time, the advice is solid and they often provide data to back up their assertions.

If I was a manager at a typical and mediocre corporation, I would not recommend this book too much-- it is hell fighting against corporate culture. However if you work for the best or you are starting a business and want to be the best, this book is extremely important. (If you are a manager working at a mediocre corporation, start your own business or get hired by a better company after you read this book!)

The main premise of the book is that people matter more than management or technology. Any business leader worth his salt knows these two points, yet most managers or leaders ignore them. This book helps give form to the ideals and specific guidance to get there. It is well recommended to everyone who manages software projects.

A must for project managers

It's hard to find at Amazon a book rated with deserved 5-stars. Even harder if it's got a good review by Joel Spolsky. Peopleware is one of them.Simple language, short chapters with plain ideas inside and a touch of psychology, altogether produces a confusing feeling. It seems as if the book tells you nothing you didn't already know but there is where its power lies: you end up thinking that you could have written this book.

I've got the second edition which is splitted in six parts. The first one, it's a general and enjoyable review of what the hell managing people is and why it's so hard. After that, we're explained how our noisy office environment sometimes makes our productivity plummet. Don't worry! Low-cost solutions are also included. Next two chapters are both about people: how to hire the best and how to bring them up within productive jelled teams. Watch out, you must keep teamicide away from teams. It also talks us about CMM and what it calls "The Big M's", explaining its influence over creativity.Last but not least, this second edition adds several chapters dedicated to topics like chaos control, organization learning, process improvement...all of them from the corporation-level perspective.

All that stuff just to conclude that people is the most valuable resource in any organization. This book doesn't taste like one of those stale books about business emotional intelligence ...it just shows plain concepts and applicable daily ideas. What turns this outstanding book into a classic is that its principles can be applied to almost any project or business (related to IT or not). My piece of advice would be "if you manage people, read this as soon as possible".

So...bosses, Peopleware is waiting for you!

I was surprised at how relevant this book still is more than 20 years after its initial publication. Depressingly, it seems the authors' suggestions have not been followed by many employers. I recently changed jobs and am in a cubicle for the first time. I have been struggling to think in my cubicle, and this book confirms my suspicion that it is my work space and not my brain that is causing the problem. Even when I am not being interrupted, I am always slightly on edge wondering when I will be interrupted. The down side of the book is that the solutions and suggestions for improvements are quite difficult to implement. I just finished the book tonight - I wonder if I will do anything differently tomorrow because of this book. Probably not - maybe the fun part of the book is grumbling about our common work situations.

Excellent book based on practical biblical teaching plus some good human coaching. Anyone stuck in a negative rut should pick this up and read it. It's a good book to share with others too. I was intrigued by the title and bought this book with the intention of giving it to a friend who really needed help getting through some tough times. I read it prior to giving it to her to be sure it met her needs and I think it hit the nail right on the head for her. Hopefully it will help her. I got some practical pearls out of it too.

A nice short read and a great book to instill new thinking habits. I really liked the practical applications, the questions to ask every day to change the way you think and to get change the negative thinking some of us have. I used some of those questions to text to my teenage daughter in the morning before she started off to school. "Who are the five people who love you the most?...beginning with your dad" What a great way to help establish great thought patterns for the rest of her life. Its a must read for anyone serious about living a joy filled life!

I really had no idea what joy was before I read this book...or how to get some of it! In a world where we are constantly surrounded by negativity, this book gives you practical tools to apply to everyday life to combat all the world throws your way. I think happiness is a state of mind that most people are searching for, but joy, on the other hand, transcends more than a state of mind...it's a state of being that is more about what radiates inside of you than how you feel in a particular set of circumstances. Emotions can be deceptive and manipulated, but joy is a fruit of the spirit. After being in an emotionally abusive relationship for nearly 10 years, this book has helped me take those negative, self-defeating thoughts captive and replace them with positive, self-affirming thoughts and it has made all the difference. I refuse to be a victim any longer, but instead choose to be a victor. Read this book, I know it will make all the difference in the world. I'm on here today to buy another copy of the book because I gave mine away. What's frustrating is that not many bookstores carry copies of the book...thank goodness for Amazon.

This is the only toolbox you will ever need.

I was diagnosed with Manic depression/bipolar disorder about 5 years ago. Prior to that it was severe Postpartum depression. I have been on and off medication for 9 years after the death of my mom. Through much prayer and seeking God I was healed of my depression and given joy abundantly, and do not take any medication whatsoever. God must know how much I love books, because only after 4 days of healing me He brought me this book. It was like God was saying "okay your healed, now here is the way to walk in it."

Tommy Newberry's down to earth and gentle approach keeps this a very readable, enjoyable and relaxing book. And, the best part was I didn't have to dig up my past and analyze all of my errors and my sins. No, this book is all about MOVING FORWARD! I rejoiced when Tommy Newberry said in the book "and, I promise you won't have to go into your past to get the answer" I paraphrased.

I have purchased this book for my family, teachers and friends. It is the gift that keeps giving. And, now all of my friends are giving it as gifts!

I am on my 10th time reading this book. And, every single time I read it, I am blessed differently by it. The 4:8 Principle has taught me how to train my mind to think the way God wants me to think. It has changed my life. God will use this book to reveal areas in your thought life that you never even knew existed. The 4:8 Principle has spread like wild-fire through my church, and people's lives are being transformed. Marriages are being transformed.

I have many, many, many books on my bookshelf. Lots of them are self-helps. This is by far the only book that has given me practical answers, and COPING SKILLS!!! And, it is not a self-help book. It is a "let God help you out book." This is not just one of those "power of positive thinking" books. This is faith in action.

Do yourself a favor. Even if you consider yourself a pretty positive person. BUY THE BOOK. You will be surprised and delighted and more blessed than you already think you are. If you are someone like me, who was constantly nursing negative, even destructive thoughts, then RUN to get the book. You won't be sorry!

I love it. And, my life is completely changed.

There are some long and very informative reviews here, but I think my title sums up the message of this book nicely. Every day I am amazed at how simple and how true it is that what we think is what we get. If we think positive thoughts, we get positive outcomes. An interesting thing is that it takes some discipline and training to think positive thoughts on a regular basis, and by that I mean not on a daily basis but on a minute-to-minute basis. Imagine if each night you received an email containing a transcipt of all the thoughts you had had that day. How long would it be? What would the transcript contain? You have to start monitoring yourself and disciplining yourself to think positive thoughts. Read this book. It will help you. It will bring greater happiness and prosperity into your life.

This book has helped me in my spiritual quest. I have always used silent mantras however this book explained how affirmations spoken out loud work as well. I have been using Ponder's affirmations and feel even more prosperous than I did before! Life is GREAT! Attitude is everything. This book is a wonderful reminder of the power of a positive attitude as well as it provides life-affirming ideas. Highly recommended for those on a spiritual path.

This is a great book by two no-nonsense experts in their fields.I just received the book this morning and am already well advanced in my first read :first immediate effect is a great boost to my morale because I feel my game-plan is good and when I use the book I will have an even better one.Not living in North America does not matter : I live in Japan and have already checked that most tips can be adapted to my circumstances by looking up the internet for local equivalents (a site for faxing e-mails for example).Maybe the most agressive techniques need to be localised but the strategy and the suggested execution are world-class.Highly recommended.

I have been looking for a new job for roughly 1 year now. I have tons of expeirence in my field but have no luck in getting a interview let alone getting a job. I originally signed up to receive the first 3 chapters for no charge from signing up at his web site. I have put some of his techniques in use and have gotten a few interviews and 2 job offers so far.

Guerilla Marketing for Job Hunter's stand's out in the thousands of books that you can get in help with a new job. This book gives you ideas to have the edge over every other job seeker out their. In today's tough economy this needs to be done.

i'm not usually one to review books, but this book definitely helped me in my job search... i had been searching for a job in ny for 2.5 months with minimal responses from companies... once i started revamping my cover letters and refocusing my search, i got 8 calls from companies, interviewed well thru 3 final rounds, and so far i'm at 2 offers, working on the 3rd. just try it! fyi - there are a few extreme tactics/suggestions in the book... i didn't follow them, but it gave me an idea on how i could get creative in my own way... totally worth it!

Unique information and insights, not found elsewhere readily ...

Catchy title ... I'm interested in most anything Jay Levinson authors or co-authors, and he and David Perry put together some very helpful tips.

Just to whet your appetite for the contents ... David points out the skills that won't be 'outsourced,' -- a word we're all familiar with as a cause for much job loss. They are:

- leadership skills,
- project management skills,
- people skills,
- communication skills, and
- sales skills.

And, he's identified jobs he believes won't (or cannot) be outsourced ... jobs in

- energy,
- preventative health care,
- security,
- the military,
- government,
- insurance,
- consumer financial services,
- agriculture, and
- biotech/pharma.

And, he talks about skills employers buy:

- leadership skills
- communication skills
- a bias toward action
- passion for the work
- and a cultural compatibility.

He goes into more detail with more examples of what employers value (e.g., the creation of intellectual wealth, high energy, enduring performance, etc.), and whether or not you agree with this, you'll find what he says to be thought-provoking.

The Value-Based Resume
Although you would expect a review of typical job-hunting venues and tactics -- networking, targeted marketing, newspaper classifieds, job boards, newsgroups, executive search firms, headhunters, temp agencies, friend, neighbors, associates, self-promotion techniques, the use of electronic job alerts, and the use of personal Web sites and/or Blogs, creating a Linked In account ... the use of company information sources and competitive intelligence sources ... and the push to get a clear sense of your goals and transferrable, marketable, relevant skills ... what stood out for me are the examples of 'value-based' resumes. You can do an Internet search with the keywords "value-based resume" and find some fair examples. Just taking the time, after seeing David's examples, to put one together for myself allowed me to rethink how I present myself and what contributions I am making.

In the value-based resume (business values), you focus on your accomplishments or contributions to:

1) increased revenues/profit, or
2) cost savings (direct or indirect), or
3) improved productivity (aka, increased efficiencies).

You might think a values-based focus is a stretch for you and your position, but I recommend you do your best to find something for one of those three. If you can't, you might rethink how you are contributing to the firm today, so you can strengthen your chances of keeping your job tomorrow. These are the three basic values business leaders consider in making changes to improve their companies, and you need to show your contribution or risk layoff. David provides some useful resume examples to help you along.

In addition, I found myself easily writing the more pointed cover letters (as David illustrates in the book), ones that mention my contributions in these value areas and as they relate to the targeted organization that I researched. I have felt more confident, more powerful, and more connected to the purpose of the job opportunity I've pursued, since I know more clearly what I can contribute to the firm, and I've given them what they need to make an objective decision. Obviously, there are other factors to hiring -- or not hiring, or delayed hiring, such as a change of mind due to business downturn, employee referral provided a needed replacement, etc. -- that affect the outcome, but I've felt confident that I've presented myself in the best light, in the meantime.

The other benefit of knowing in detail what you have contributed in any of those three business value areas comes in your face-to-face interviews; you have examples and stories to illustrate your contributions. That make for a more useful and convincing interview. David guides us in the creation of our own storybook(s) that illustrate how we rose to the challenge of a relevant job situation, that we can lead under pressure, can execute a strategy in response, and can be both a team leader and a team captain, as needed.

David also offers and explains in detail 13 (interesting) creative ways to find a job, which are worth considering, such as writing an email chain letter, calling your targeted firm's HR person to get the name of the screening firm they use, writing a case study of the targeted firm within its current industry situation, preparing a competitive analysis of the firm, etc.

If all that I've outlined doesn't stir your interest in getting a hold of this book, I don't know what will ... or perhaps you are independently wealthy and don't need a job.

I recently finished my first year at a top tier law school. This book did so much for me. If you are serious about getting good grades in CivPro, I think you should seriously consider this book. It forces you to understand the concepts and work through the rules, which is vital to doing well on exams. Don't stress about exams. This will help you.

This is an essential supplement if you are going to understand this God-forsaken subject. I took off a star because there are some important subjects that are not covered in the book for some reason (For example, there is very little on Rule 24)

This is by far one of the best supplements out there. It really explains everything and illustrates the material with great examples followed by explanations that are clear and concise. I would not recommend taking Civil Procedure without this book.

However, one caveat: this book may not cover all of the material in your Civ Pro class. Off the top of my head, I know it is missing chapters on class actions, Seventh Amendment right to jury trials, and interpleader (though it has impleader and other joinder topics). Despite this minor shortcoming, the material that is contained in this supplement is explained well and illustrated through great examples. Definitely a must have!

E&E is a great series. I've found many of the books helpful in supplementing law school reading that can be at times difficult to synthesize. However, Freer's supplement on civil procedure is unbeatable.

Law school is about knowing the rule and applying the facts. E&E is great at helping you to know the rule. However, it doesn't help you figure out how to apply the facts, especially in a way pertinent to law school exams. Freer's book is full of examples and frameworks that assure success on your CivPro exam. This is especially true of the frameworks he lays out for analyzing Personal Jurisdiction problems and Erie.

Buy Freer and you'll be happier going into your final.
