I like the direct "how to" advice in this book. My husband and I have promised one another we will not medicate our daughter and this book has given us more faith that we can keep that committment. This book has given us ideas that are simple to use and practical. Our daughter has a 504 but after reading Dr. Ashley's book we requested another IEP meeting and revised her entire plan based upon the ideas in this book. She is doing much better in school now and homework is not the torture we all used to suffer. The 504 ideas in the back of the book are worth it alone. our school is now using dr. ashley's checklist to help design IEP and 504s for all their add and adhd kids.

I just bought this book with the intentions of reading it. I came to this site to see what other people think about the book. So far I have seen really good reviews on it. But what bothers me are those parents who stress that THEY WILL NOT medicate their child. As a mother I never ever wanted to take that route. I read alot of information to help him without medication. What foods he can eat and other helpful ways to help him without medicine, that was very difficult. Finally after he was almost kicked out of Preschool I took him to our school district and they evaluated him having ADHD. With their diagnosis they allowed him to attend preschool at no cost to me, to make him understand school rules. I also took him to our pediatrician, crying with the news of what they told me, I knew that medication was the only way to help him. Upset and depressed we went home. I started 2weeks before kindergarden and I have notice what a good kid he had become. Since then he has been more focus and attentive in class. He gets his moments when he distracts class but other than that he is doing good. He is very very smart, from what the teachers are telling me.

This text is spectacular. This edition is a triumph. I was a bit dubious when the forward obliquely compared this book to The Beatles (The White Album), but have become more sympathetic to the perspective as I have spent more time with it. Cooper/Heron is simply the book to use in studying Applied Behavior Analysis. It's not chummy or dated like some texts of 70s (an effort to reduce the response effort of learning the material, no doubt). Instead it is complete, precise and well written. My sincere thanks to the authors. Worth twice the going price.

The Bob book series are excellent for encouraging very beginning readers. Each page has only a few words and kids who are just beginning to sound out and read the stories. This makes them want to keep learning. The only thing to watch out for is kids sometimes memorize the books if they read only one or two over and over so you need to mix them up to have them actually read the books.

I've been using these with my 4 and 5 year olds and they both love them.

I am amazed at how these books have helped my 4.5 year old son take off with his reading. He eats these books up, and I have taken to letting him read one in bed at night with a little book light to encourage his reading. He even asks about the punctuation marks and what they mean! By the time he hits kindergarten I think he will be through the whole set!

These books have really helped my 5yo daughter get confident in her reading skills. I would highly recommend them to any beginning reader. They are fun stories but the words are all easy to sound out. I'm amazed at how many 3-letter words are in our language that I hadn't thought about!

Training the Brain

I am a Special Education teacher. I help children with learning disabilities (K-5) learn to read. I don't think there are words for how highly I want to reccommend these books to parents and other educators. These books are PHONICS based and they are systematic and sequential. They help train a child's brain to see the patterns in the english language. Learning these patterns is how children learn to read. Other reviews have slammed these books for being boring and low interest. Are they the most exciting and engaging books ever? No, not really. Will they help your child/student learn to read? YES, they will. And the stories have enough content that I am able to monitor comprehension with questions such as "Who was this story about?", "Why did the fox try to hide when he saw the hen?", and "How do you think the animals felt when they saw the fox?". But most importantly, it is just such a thrill to see that expression of astonished pride on the child's face when they finish reading the book to you all by themselves. It's that bewildered sense of accomplishment that makes my students willing to take on new challenges and continue improving their reading skills.

I had an opportunity to read Different Just Like Me and was so touched by the author's spirit towards diversity of all people, shapes, colors, conditions, and ailments. This is a wonderful starter book for preschool to young elementary aged children to put language to difference, and to begin awareness to how being different and unique... is really what we're all about. Each page has a new element, be it Braille, sign language, explanation of fruits and vegetables - and makes connections between the differences in each. Wonderful work!

When I first read Different Just Like Me I thought to myself, "What a wonderful book and what a great way to begin discussions in my classroom about respecting each others' differences". Never did I dream that this book would have the impact it had on my third grade class. The converstaions that were stimulated by this book were phenomenal! I was so impressed by how the book was able to open the door to the difficult topic of differences and acceptance. Children began to share their own experiences of times they felt left out or different. Children spoke about times when they felt uncomfortable around someone who was different then they were and they were unsure of how to handle that. I learned that my students had so many questions. They had finally found a safe opportunity to begin asking these questions. The children continued to refer to the book and make textual connectionns with this book throughout the year. It was obvious that the story had made a big impact on the children. Besides teaching a third grade class I also teach the Mainstreaming class for teachers at San Diego State University. I have reccommended this book to many teachers in the class as an avenue to begin the discussion about diversity in the classroom. I have heard such positive results from many of the teachers about how helpful it was to start the discussion with this book.

I learned of this book because my daughter Lindsey has vitiligo, a skin condition, that makes her look different. I went to my local library to check on the book and they had to borrow it from a bigger library. My daughter and I enjoyed the book because it brings out the points that we are all different in some ways but we are all also the same because everyone has feelings and want to be loved and treated well. When I returned the book to the library the librarian told me that she had enjoyed the book also and wanted to order a copy for our local library. The beautiful illustrations and insightful text are a treasure for anyones library.

Tepid and Discouraging

I've read this book a number of time with my daughter. The odd premise is that we are all alike despite our differences. The main character, April, encounters people who are different races or ethnicities, people with disabilities, even boys and men, and . . .nothing much happens.

She has these encounters before and during a weekend train trip to visit her Grandmother. (Oddly, nothing is made of how older people are different but the same.) Her Grandmother cuts a bunch of different flowers and gives April the bouquet.

This aggregation of flowers symbolizes, one must suppose, that different people can be in the same place. Gosh!

The story is weak, the premise flimsy, but the illustrations are OK.

A must read for all who raise, educate, heal, or influence our children
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-01
This is a common sense and logical read. The main ideas seems to make sense on so many levels. Basically our children are not being forced to think and prevoke some thought before reacting. This reading keys in on the need for consistent inner guidance versus short term exterior material motivations or threats that does nothing to teach children well. It helps the adults in their lives become better, more mature, thoughtful stewards of our children's growth and in handling behavior issues in ways that will benefit their overall wellbeing as well as our own. In retrospect, our children will grow not only by our own example, but also by the tools and skills we pass along to them for the most successful and enriching life journey experience possible. In the process, they are learning how to be and how to act, they are learning how to make mindful, self-respecting, civil, responsible choices for themselves in response to the environment around them. Today's high paced, competitive, global world requires our children to reason well and make good choices as they find their place in it so they are not getting lost or taken advantage of in the shuffle of it all. It is better that our children learn diffirently and more thoughtfully than past generations in an effort to reduce the amount of dysfunction and social-emotional challenges we as a society have been facing far too long. Education is a beautiful thing so that history does not continue to repeat itself and spread to the next generation so that we can continue to achieve betterment. We need to grow civility and personal accountability in our culture which is so diverse in a civilized and responsible way and it begins at home and in our educational institutions.

Thanks Dr. Marshall for clearly articulating and outlining these very principles in your book. The book also introduces the foundation of the "how to's" so we can begin utilizing this approach and changing some not so good ineffective practices we have acquired along the way which continue to confuse, belittle and dumb down our kids. Raise the bar and your kids will adjust. If you raise it high enough they will never fall to the bottom and they will love you for it later on in life.

I have been looking for something like this book for the ten years of my teaching career. Finally, there is a ready-to-implement system that combines recent brain research, psychology, and logical consequences into a classroom management system that not only produces a measurable improvement in behavior, but increases motivation for learning and responsibility. Marvin Marshall knows how to relate to children of all ages (and adults, too). I'm giving up my token economies and classroom prizes in favor of this system, which sends out students into the world to become productive, successful workers, family leaders, and citizens. This book will walk you step-by-step through the simple system which requires little to no record-keeping. Hooray!

This book is an excellent resource for new teachers and seasoned teachers
as well, who are struggling with the issues of discipline in their
classrooms. It shows how the old system of punishment and rewards does
not achieve good results and how it can be replaced with a system of
instilling personal responsibility and love of learning in students. I
like the way the book gives specific ways that teachers can do this.
This book should be a "must read" in schools of education, and could
revolutionize American education and society.

No More Class Store or Missed Recess

Review Date: 2005-08-20
I purchased this book after an extremely challenging year of behavior problems in first grade. As a teacher who had previous success using rewards (giving plastic money that could be redeemed in a class store) and punishment (taking away recess time), this new class had so many problems that nothing seemed to work! During the summer, I read everything on behavior management I could find in preparation for my new third grade class and found this book while searching the web. Needless to say, this past year was the best year of teaching I've had in my short career of five years. Using the daily class meetings--the students' favorite part of the day--to solve problems and asking disruptive students to tell me "their level," I found that most problems went away quickly and students didn't get resentful of me because they had to reflect on how they were acting. Using the agenda for students to write down issues that bothered them was a great way to deal with tattling. I also linked the system with students who would forget homework. Rather than punish them, I would give them the Level 1 Essay to reflect on why they forgot their homework and what they could try so they could remember it. It worked! I also recommend buying "Positive Discipline in the Classroom" (Nelson) as a companion to this book if you want more step-by-step instructions for the classroom meeting. It picks up where Dr. Marshall's book leaves off regarding class meetings, especially on how to introduce it at the beginning of the year. One more thing: parents LOVE this system and will love you for using it!

.So far, so interesting

I love the philospohy behind this book, but Dr. Marshall goes one step further and adds the golden element of classroom testing. When he tells me I will need to use a particular strategy with about 2 % of my students, I feel confidence that this material has truly been tested in real situations. Part of the problem with many discipline programs that aim to address classroom management without rewards, tokens, and such is they often talk down to teachers for using token systems, but offer only theories and clinical data as proof without workable ideas for in the classroom. I am trying out Dr. Marshall's program and will see how far it takes me, but after the first two introductory lessons on the ABCD heirarchy, this weird quiet settled into my room, like the idea of democracy had just sunk into my students heads. Very heady stuff.

My son is just 19 months old, but I already know we will be homeschooling him. I've been reading various references on getting started and have found this book to be one of the best. Written from a Christian perspective, this book shares personal stories, basic how-tos and lots of references.

Although this volume was written early on in the Internet age, most of what is has to share is timeless. I'm figuring on consulting this book throughout my homeschooling career.

A Different Book for a Different Need

I absolutely love this book. It's important to understand that this book is very different than many other homeschool how-to books out there. While there are many books that focus on academics, and some books that focus on discipleship, this book weaves both academics and discipleship together in a very user friendly and understandable format. They do encourage avoiding textbooks and workbooks, but I came away from the book feeling like I could still implement their methods and even most of their resources. This is because this isn't a curriculum manual or guide. It's a guide on how to disciple your child for Jesus Christ, within the framework and atmosphere of the home and family. Then, once they establish how to disciple your child, they must outline some homeschool resources, books, and ways to organize your home and your life, becuase they correctly identify that all of these things are so closely intertwined. They encourage you to have a room set aside for homeschooling alone, and we are unable to do this. At first I felt frustrated that their entire plan of education seems to hang on this, but I realized that I can simply turn my living room into a home education center, with blocks on the floor in a basket, a game shelf, children's book shelves, maps on the kitchen cabinets, etc. They also encourage using GeoSafari, computer applications, puzzles, games, and of course tons of living books. They encourage a lot of individualized learning and goals specific to each child for each year. But to read any review is going to leave you without the most important aspect of this book, which is that the Clarksons' outline a simple framework for home discipleship that anyone can implement. I love some Charlotte Mason methods, and I do use some workbooks and curricula, but I still love this book, and it's tied with Charlotte Mason Companion for my favorite homeschool how-to book.

Great information, helpful

I paid a premium to order this book and have found it quite useful. The authors use an eclectic approach to homeschooling their children that leans heavily on the Charlotte Mason method and educational philosophy of Ruth Beechick, both of which I am a fan.

This is a good resource, but I've seen better. I dropped a star primarily because I have a hard time reading the type/layout. I don't know if this is a personal preference, but the pages seemed "grayed out" with type. It is oversized and bits of information fill the margins. Perhaps this is why I have a difficult time reading along.

Recommended - get it from the library first, if possible, then decide if you will gain any insight or encouragement from owning this book. If you are a dyed-in-the-wool fan of traditional curricula and the school-at-home model of education, this book is not for you.

One of the best I have read yet!!!

Wow!! This book was exactly what I was looking for. Actually, it was above my expectations. I originally ordered this book because I was searching to find help with our homeschool. We are only in our third year, but I was feeling that things were very dry and redundant. I found MANY ideas and helps, but this book is so much more than a guide for a particular method. It starts with the heart issue of why we are doing this in the first place and helps to confirm the many convictions that I was feeling before I bought the book. There is more to life and education than workbooks and dry curriculum ( which is where we were). They give you many descriptions of types of methods and then lay out what they do in their homeschool. The system totally makes sense. Your foundation of your homeschool should start with Discipleship and then you work up from there. This book is a GREAT FIND in my opinion.

If you are considering buying any guide for Check Point Firewall-1 NG buy this one first and forget the rest.

Don't let the author's "phoneboy" aka make you think twice. This is one of the best guides I have ever read. Most are dry boring and overly technical. This guide is a very easy read, it is well written and to the point and covers all aspects of Check Point Fire Wall thoroughly.

Welch-Abernathy has taken great care to present installation, configuration and troubleshooting in a manner anyone will understand, whether you are seasoned pro or just getting started. He has covered all OS models and taken many of the trobleshooting questions from his site FAQs at www.phoneboy.com and shown examples of how to understand and correct them. In addition to actual Q and A, he outlines the step by step sample configurations excellently with actual scripts, screenshots, notes and diagrams.

Welch-Abernathy also guides you through creating network structures on a scale that allows someone new to Check Point to design and impliment smallto medium network configurations in easy to manage ways.

The author starts out buy giving a great overview of firewall security technologies and there relation to OS Models while comparing the benifits and short comings of both.

Welch-Abernathy then guides you through the installation and developing your rule base. He includes tables and charts to show examples of each and backs up his examples with the most common Q&As making an installation seem like a breeze.

The authors explanation of remote access, NAT and high availability servers don't get any simpler. Any Admin who needs load balancing and fail over on a server cluster should keep this
guide around for refferance as well as daily use.

In addition to the main body of knowledge Welch-Abernathy also includes a great appendex covering OS Bastion security that is not only simple it is direct as well. Also included in the Appendices are a use policy template, ldap configuration, fine tuning for performance and two pages of concrete internet resources.

The author starts out buy giving a great overview of firewall security technologies and there relation to OS Models while comparing the benifits and short comings of both. I also found his overview and specifics of the licensing to be very helpfull.

Welch-Abernathy then guides you through maze of the installation process and developing your rule base. He includes tables and charts to show examples of each and backs up his examples with the most common Q&As making an installation seem like a breeze.

His examples of authentication, encyption and vpn make this a must read for anyone running Check Point on a corpoarte network.

I also found his overview and specifics of the licensing to be very helpfull as well.

If you are running Check Point Firewall-1 or considering using Check Point Firewall-1 you won't go wrong by putting this one in your library.

The best technical text I've read.

Alot of subjects in IT and security are covered over and over with a mass of books that may be a little better or a little worse, but are essentially identical. While Checkpoint is a less crowded topic than, say, NT Administration, I suspect this book will continue to stand out. In researching Checkpoint issues I've been struck by the extent to which "Phoneboy" is personally identified with the topic, both by newbies and by seasoned professionals. It's for good reason. This book is extremely thorough (within its scope) and brings alot to the table in the way of the details that a professional would need. I've read alot of technical texts, but this one stands out, both generally and with the specific topic. The book is written well, with a good structure and giving useful examples. I found the bug reports and known issues particularly useful. As a technical resource it seems unmatched. It was an excellent resource, both on the job and in earning my CCSA.

Each chapter of the book starts off with describing what the reader will learn or accomplish by reading that chapter. This sort of information is helpful for allowing readers to skip information that may not be useful to them and find the answers they seek. Many of the chapters also contain FAQ's and sample configurations and illustrations to help reinforce the information.

The book tries to cover a very broad scope and apply to a wide audience. It contains information all the way from holding the readers hand if they are new to Checkpoint Firewall-1 NG to providing detailed troubleshooting and configuration steps for experienced Checkpoint administrators.

I have never administered a Checkpoint firewall personally, but I found the information mostly straight forward and understandable. Again, this is not a book one would typically read casually, but for anyone who administers a Checkpoint firewall or is looking at installing a Checkpoint Firewall-1 NG system this is an excellent source of information.

Hands down the best book on FW-1 available

Checkpoint FireWall-1 has become one of the top firewall software products in the industry. There are many reasons for its predominance. It was the first commercial
firewall on the market, but more importantly, the FireWall-1 GUI and its ease of use impressed corporate CIO's.

Although FireWall-1 is easy to use, some users face difficulty in configuring the product correctly and appropriately. In fact, one of the biggest dangers of a firewall is that it can
provide a false sense of security; if not properly configured, a firewall may have so many holes that it actually functions as nothing more than a router. Firewall expert Marcus
Ranum notes that, "...eventually, if enough data is going back and forth through your firewall, it is no longer a firewall -- it is a router."

Many times, firewall administrators are hired not because of their expertise in information security, but because they know network and systems administration quite
well. Many FireWall-1 administrators start with zero experience and knowledge. This is good from a job security and training perspective, but terrible from a security perspective.
Despite the proliferation and ubiquitous nature of FireWall-1 over the past decade, it is only in the last few months that any worthwhile books on FireWall-1 have become
available. One of the best is Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1: An Installation, Configuration, and Troubleshooting Guide by Dameon Welch-Abernathy. Welch-
Abernathy maintains a Web site, ..., which contains information on anything and everything related to FireWall-1. In fact, many FireWall-1 administrators have
... bookmarked as their prime site for FireWall-1 information, even before the Check Point support site.

Although the documentation that comes with FireWall-1 is quite good, Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 often surpasses it. This is what makes Welch-Abernathy known as
the man for FireWall-1. Even Nir Zuk, who was a principal engineer at Check Point, stated that Welch-Abernathy's knowledge of FireWall-1 in many cases surpassed the
knowledge of Check Point's own engineers.

As its title implies, the book covers the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of FireWall-1. Whereas the product itself is pretty straightforward to install (except for the
software license information), the real challenge is in the post- installation arena. The book has 14 chapters and, by Chapter 3 (page 34), the book is already into FireWall-
1. Other books often include up to 100 pages of filler on topics such as computer secrity, cryptography, threats, etc., and don't get to the main subject until half way through the
book. Chapter 4 of this book provides a thorough overview of how to build a rulebase. The chapter describes the various fields and objects that need to be created for the
firewall to be effective. Although the simplicity of the Check Point GUI is obvious, the definition of names, network objects, and so forth, must be carefully planned -- especially
for rollouts of FireWall-1 in large enterprise environments.

Chapter 8 provides an excellent overview of content security. FireWall-1 is built on its patented Stateful Inspection capabilities, but it has other security facilities including CVP
(Content Vectoring Protocol), UFP (URL Filtering Protocol), and others. The chapter describes much of the secondary content protection capabilities of FireWall-1. Such

capabilities are crucial in light of the volume of information that passes through corporate firewalls (including streaming media, email, files, Java, etc.).

Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 covers all the crucial topics that any FireWall-1 administrator needs to know. From authentication, VPN, logging, high availability, and
more, it is all there. This is what makes Essential Checkpoint Firewall-1 the book of choice for FireWall-1.

Lives up to its title!

This is one of those rare books that delivers what the title claims. It gives in-depth instructions on Firewall-1 installation, configuration and troubleshooting, and also includes additional material on security and networking that goes beyond what the title promises.

What I especially liked about this book are the little details that have a big impact if they're overlooked. Notable examples include:

(1) Quick, but thorough, introduction that provides an overview of firewalls at a general level, and the key features and benefits of Firewall-1 in particular.
(2) Issues, such the need for a security policy, are addressed early on. This is an important consideration and the author goes beyond merely highlighting the need by giving you a brief template to use in creating one.
(3) Guide through the labyrinth of Check Point's Firewall-1 licensing schemes - this is a nice touch because mastering the technology is a less daunting task then figuring out Check Point's sales strategy.
(4) Strengths and weaknesses of candidate operating systems, and a straightforward process for installing and configuring Firewall-1. The latter is a strong point because you'll benefit from the author's extensive experience and will save time by having a strategy instead of getting bit by obscure issues and learning painful lessons.

I like the way that each section ends with frequently asked questions. The author anticipates and answers common questions about installation, configuration and troubleshooting. Because of the way this book is structured it can serve as an off-the-shelf implementation and maintenance guide, eliminating the need to develop this material in-house.

This is one of the best written and well thought-out technical guides that I've had the pleasure of reading. It sets a high standard for similar books, but more importantly, it so completely covers Firewall-1 that you won't need anything but this book to implement and support this product.

My 2 1/2 year old son absolutely loves this book..the illustrations are lovely, and it is so much fun to read with him. He has already remembered all the words, and fills in most of the gaps as we read it together. He is crazy about fire engines and firemen. I can't recommend this book enough.

My 2-year old follows this story pretty well (it has a repetitive-type storyline) and caught on quickly to the page turn cues (siren). He loves all the sound effects throughout the story. The illustrations are eye catching as well and help tell the story for a child that doesn't read yet. The price is reasonable considering how hard these cassette read-along are to find!

We LOVE, LOVE Fireman Small!

I like that he is such a sweet caring firefighter who goes out of his way to help everyone. I love any book that instills compassion in its readers. We love Fireman Small!!!

Great Fireman Book, Great Bedtime Story

I picked this up thinking that it would be another good fireman book for my fireman-obsessed five-year-old. It certainly is that, but the flow and the structure also make it an excellent help-your-child-to-fall-asleep story. The basic plot is that Fireman Small is very tired and keeps trying to go to bed, but each time he does some new emergency happens that forces him to get up one more time. When he's done with the last one, everybody thanks him for all his help and he oh-so-happily drifts off to sleep. I usually read him several stories at bedtime, but I like to make sure that this is the last one; by the time we're through with it he's usually nodding off.

One small problem; Wong seems to have a unique sense of rhythm, which makes this harder to read aloud then you might expect; it took me a couple of readings before I felt that I had gotten it completely right. With practice, though, it flows beautifully.

My son loves it!

This is a sweet story with a nice flow and repetition. My 2 1/2 year old son has immediately begun pretending to be Fireman Small saving the kitty and the baby bunny. I will definitely look into other books by this author.
