DANCING TO HIS OWN BEAT: ALVIN AILEY

Readers may have heard the name "Alvin Ailey" but this book makes the man live. From the time he was a kid his life was music: at first in church. Alvin's moving, leaping body is caught perfectly in the scratchboard illustrations toned with watercolors and acrylic. A fine top choice biography of an African-American artist!

PEELING BACK THE UNDERBELLY OF AMERICA

Review Date: 2005-07-15
As a photographer who enjoys images more than text these days. This book is so well written that one "sees" images while David Cochran unfurls text in a manner that mimics the tendencies of the writes discussed within the book itself. Cochran knows his politics, his "POST WAR ERA" history and his subjects so well that while reading I had to keep looking at the cover to remind myself why I got the book. It goes beyond the call of duty.

Because of this book, I will be able to ascertain how the current bevy of movies being made on Marvel Comics and dark subject matters stack up to the tone of the era in which they were drawn. Also, I know better why American people are in the shape they are in. With more unresloved issues and more neurosis its a wonder how we have survived this long. Thank God for the Underground Writer and Filmmakers of the Postwar Era, there are valves to let some steam off.

Not an easy read, but a GREAT read!

As a tail-end "baby boomer" I have long been fascinated with the changes taking place in popular culture throughout my adolescent years and into adulthood. A long-time fan of MAD magazine, I never really understood the counter culture statements being made in the magazine or how they reflect society as a whole.

David Cochran's treatise, "America Noir: Underground Writers and Filmmakers of the Postwar Era" describes the propagation of a subculture which was not afraid to assert that all was not as rosy as the dominant culture would purport.

Reading the book was very much NOT like reading a novel or one of Rod Serling's short stories. To a certain extent, the book reads like a history text.

America Noir conists of five parts: The Killer Inside Me-Roman Noir Authors; Progress and Its Discontents-Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors; Outside Looking In-Minority Authors; Little Shop of Horrors-Independent Filmmakers; and Cracks in the Consensus-Liberal Artists. These five parts "connects the dots" to form a cohesive picture of the events, attitudes, and expressions which have marked the changing of American society from the period immediately following World War II to the current time.

I have a better grasp of the causes underlying the changes in society from the time I was a kid myself to now when I have adolescent kids of my own. I'm sure I will soon go out to experience some of the books and movies described in "America Noir." It is an excellent addition to my library.

I am an art history graduate student and a longtime art lover and this is the American art survey book that I have been waiting for. It is well-written, full of beautiful images and expands the traditional boundaries of the historical narrative of American art. It surprised me with fresh insights that I've found to be thought provoking and inspiring. This book has a permanent place on my bookshelf.

This is a splendid, rich investigation of American art and culture. Filled with unusual images from architecture, popular culture, "high" art, and all forms of American design, across race and social class, it engages the reader in the puzzling tapestry of our intricate culture, tracing influences that will surprise both newcomers to this field and those for whom this book will offer a welcome development of American art history and American Studies.

A Story to Inspire All Interested in Wild Places and Beyond
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-04
A great deal of thanks should go to Bonnie Kreps and Charlie Craighead for there many years of work dedicated to the life of Mardy Murie. Their double-barreled presentation, first the wonderful film "Arctic Dance, The Mardy Murie Story", and now this fantastic book, tell the story of Margaret "Mardy" Murie like nobody else could.

More like a scrapbook, Arctic Dance brings readers on a journey as rich as any trip to the Brooks Range. Mardy, known by many as the Grandmother of American Conservation movement, has been an inspiration to several generations or activists, policy-makers and wilderness afficionandos. Her experiences and deeds as a child in Alaska, a lover and wife, a wilderness adventurer, an advocate for wild places, and a mentor to so many, give us all an example for how to live life to its fullest with meaning, and grit. Her times with husband Olaus Murie are a testiment to the power of love and partnership and how determination and humility can bring anybody far. Without her, our lives and the state of wilderness would be very different.

Craighead and Kreps bring you on this journey through stories, letters, vivid photographs and telling testimonials from those who knew Mardy best. Reading this book is the next best thing to having tea and cookies with Mardy at her log house in Moose, Wyoming.

i worked part time for Vision On publishing so I got a chance to read some of the books that they produced. Art of Barbie was one of the best as it showed how the simple doll that is loved by millions can be shown in other ways that you would expect. It's a good book for people with open minds on simple subjects,

I bought this book from the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

I have been fascinated with Native American tribes in South American for most of my life, particularly Panama and Colombia. This book is so thorough in expressing all aspects of life for the Kuna (or Cuna) that I would almost say this is the only book you would need to learn about the Kuna. It truly is incredible in its information as well as its photographs. It is VERY well done! Bravo Senorita Salvador! Espero ver mas libros de usted!

ART OF VIETNAM may not be the definitive survey of this country's rich artistic heritage one might find in the archives of Eastern or Asian Art in Museums or Universities, but it is one of the most keenly written brief overviews of the hundreds of years of important creations from all the varied areas within Vietnam. It also happens to make excellent references to the many 'occupations' of the country and the influences of those cultures (Western and Eastern) on the art that is Vietnamese.

Art historian and author Catherine Noppe and specialist in Asian arts Jean-François Hubert have compiled an easily digestible summary of Vietnam's history, linking that history with the changes in credos and styles that blanket Vietnam's artistic past. From religious relics to examples of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, each work illustrated (in fine chronological order) is well chosen and presented in color-true fashion. Even works of art currently being made by contemporary artists are included - some superb, some merely interesting.

For those whose curiosity about Vietnam only increases with time since our flattening of that country some years back, this is a solid introduction to the rich cultural heritage that is Vietnam's. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, August 05
