An Embarassment of Riches

Review Date: 2001-06-09
Here are 270 pages of the most sublimely beautiful poems in English that I have ever read. Sam Hamill has brought us one step closer to the music of an ancient and culturally distant aesthetic that, until the modernist revolution of the last century, was closed to English speaking readers and writers.

It is difficult to overestimate the impact that Chinese poetry in translation had on modern poetry in English. Arthur Waley's *170 Chinese Poems* and Ezra Pound's enormously important adaptions in *Cathay* are cornerstones of modernism. Kenneth Rexroth's translations, starting with *100 Poems from the Chinese*, were equally as important to the last quarter of the 20th century. Moreover, the interest that these translations produced sparked an interest in world poetry, that completely transformed poetry in English during the last 50 years. The obvious issue that is always before the reader of poetry in translation is authenticity. Octavio Paz said all poetry is translation. Still, as a reader, it's impossible to know what distance is really spanned in the journey from Tu Fu's mouth to my ears.

I think this book goes a long way toward settling, if not answering some of these concerns. I don't read classical Chinese, so I don't know exactly how accurate these translations are. Nevertheless, Sam Hamill's informative (though somewhat loopy) introduction makes a strong case for thier reliability. By showing his method, he inspires confidence that not only are you reading beautiful English poems, but that what you're reading is speaking to over the bridge of centuries and cultures.

The center 100 pages of this amazing book contains probably the finest translations to date of China's great 8th century poets, Li Po, Wang Wei, and Tu Fu (who is, according to K. Rexroth, the greatest non-epic, non-dramatic poet in any language in the history of the world). These treasures are surrounded by a generous selection of poems dating from the 1st century BCE to the 16th century CE.

Whether you already love poetry or you want to start loving it, don't pass up the enrichment that these poems can bring to your life.

The first book, after Rexroth, of Chinese poems I ever read from cover to cover in one sitting, for the pure joy of it, was Sam Hamill's first book of translations. Crossing the Yellow River is simply more and better, as far as I'm concerned. Great reading.

Excellent TCM Source

This is an excellent book for TCM practitioners. It covers a wide variety of diagnostic techniques all included in one book (rather than having to buy 20 short books with similar info). From face diagnosis, to nail diagnosis, to in depth pattern recognition (for thin necks to swollen ears to stomach aches), Maciocia has included it all. I found the part about using palm lines to show tendencies towards certain types of diseases very interesting. There are colour plates in the back of the book that show examples of body type, tongues, and skin conditions.

The only problem I see is that it can be a little hard to find what you are looking for until you get used to using the book. With all of the info covered, Maciocia included a "How to use this book" section in the begining to help with that.

I found this to be an outstanding text. It is the most complete works on traditional Chinese medical diagnosis that I have seen on the market. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a complete overview of the subject matter.

Best Instructions on Taoist Magick in English!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-10
Ok, back in 1999/2000 I was all about trying to find books in the enlglish language that gave the reader step-by-step working techniques in Taoist Magick/Sorcery. Some unfamiliar with Zheng Yi Taoism pass off Taoism as just a "form of philosophy". They were never exposed to the Zheng Yi magickal side that involves registries of spirits and gods and demons, and techniques on how to command these celestial beings to command millions of spirits under their command. The paranormal side is something that Paul Dong covers in some of his books, but this series is THE best to put it ALL TOGETHER! This is actually one of the best metaphysical systems over all complete with healing, qigong, inner alchemy, yoga, psychic development, magical techniques, metaphysical understanding of the multi-verse, psychology, treatment and diagnosis of the whole spectrum disorders with Qigong medicine, energy work, energy anatomy and physiology, etc, etc, everything, EVERYTHING!!!!!

Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson has done us a favor by being the first to present such powerful information in the English Language at such a level. Before him, you would have had to speak Mandarin to learn such material.

He deserves over 5 stars. I hope that in the future, he will take me in as a personal apprentice!!!

If your into Oriental Medicine, Internal marial arts, qigong/yoga, Eastern Metaphysics and magick, then THIS ONE....THIS SERIES...THIS AUTHOR...IS...THE...RIGHT...ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There really is no reason to own any other book on the subject. I am very pleased that I bought this book and will be ordering the rest of the author's titles.

In my opinion, acquiring all of the author's cookbooks first before buying the other English language Chinese cookbooks makes an important foundation to understanding what you eat in America and how the food is cooked at home. Then proceed to the other cookbooks and hopefully to eating the more elaborate levels of Chinese cooking. I didn't pick up the author's cookbooks until very recently and only after learning that the author is from Sun Tak. I wish I had bought her books long ago.

A rare gem!

Not only does this book include all the favorite Hong Kong style dim sum dishes, but it also includes step-by-step illustrations in beautiful and yet informative pen-and-ink drawings. You will use this book for every Chinese meal, so buy two, in case one of them gets tea spilt upon it.

Nice update to the 82 dim sum book.

Review Date: 1997-06-09
This is a modern version of Eileen Lo's 1982 dim sum book . . which is my personal favorite recipe book for dim sum. I noticed that in accordance with the new low-fat trends of the 90's, Ms. Lo is using more infused oils and broths than in her 82 book. The recipes are very clear and easy to follow, never any guess work involved. Ms. Lo writes a little about each recipe, explaining tid-bits about the translation of the name, regionality of the recipe, or modifications she has made. I was especially pleased because this is the only book I have found a recipe for "baked" BBQ pork buns, instead of the steamed kind, a treat that until now I could only get at chinese specialty bakeries. I consider this and the '82 Dim Sum book, a necessary part of any chinese cookbook collect.

Simple and delicious recipes, as good as most tea houses.

This is a superb book with mouthwatering dimsum. Some techniques need to be mastered, but most are simple. Seems to be very authentic with the "tea house" taste. I love this book and recommend it to everyone!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and came across it as I was looking for more information on the Dawn Redwood, which is the focus of the book. This book tells the story of a man that was also on a search for information on the tree and where his search eventually leads him-back to the home of the Dawn Redwood-China! I highly recommend this book and the author is held as an authority on the history of the Dawn Redwood-because if you surf the web you will find many accounts that are nowhere near being true! Discover this book!

The redwoods of the world, so few remain today. Gittlen's travel was personal and touched a core inside of me because I am a redwood lover too. Chances had it arranged that the Chinese Redwood to be saved and propagated throughout the world, and Gittlen further did redwoods favor by documenting the people, places and events which led to today's preservation efforts on any redwood species. A great read for amateur botanists. Hope that one day I can repeat or expand Gittlen's journey myself.

The differences between China and USA - for dummies!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-27
If you're like me, and probably most "Eagles" (a.k.a. Americans), you don't have the time or inclination to spend years studying up on the Chinese and what makes their culture "tick". This book is like a "for dummies" book. It gives you an easy overview of the differences between our cultures and how we can learn from those differences. Frankly, it whet my appetite for more information. I really enjoyed knowing that this wasn't just a book for Americans. It's written simultaneously in Chinese, so these words of wisdom can be shared with that culture as well. This book is excellent for someone thinking of expanding their business in China or wanting to understand the Chinese culture better!

Since the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, I have become increasingly intrigued with the Chinese culture. This book is an enlightening look at the differences and similarities of the U.S. and China from a philisophical, social, and economic perspective. Plus, having the Chinese language right there on the opposite page made me feel that this book could provide insight to both cultures on the other. A great read!
