EMIGRACJA POLITYCZNA
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-15
There is no such thing as the Polish "immigration" to America. There were Polish immigrationS. The immigration which laid the groundwork for the Polish-American community as it exists today was the great emigration of 1880-1920, people who came for economic reasons. Polish poverty and American labor needs dovetailed. The immigration from 1945-52, the "DP" (Displaced Person) immigration, was a political immigration of people who refused to return to a "Poland" that was a mere Soviet satellite. These immigrants were often well-educated professionals who felt a moral obligation to preserve the free Polish intellectual tradition (after Hitler and Stalin did their best to exterminate it). Invoking the models of a "exile mission" found in the writings of Mickiewicz and other post-1830 Uprising emigres, the "DPs" eventually came to America, added fresh blood to the Polish Diaspora in America, and kept alive faith in Poland's eventual resurrection as a truly free and democratic state. Fills an important gap. Highly recommended.

The editors and the contributors have done a great job. The two-volume "Festschrift" of Jonathan Riley-Smith is well edited and it covers a huge part of modern scholarship of the field. I recommend to all students of the crusades as well as that of the military orders.

CHAPTER 5 RF-80s

Warren Thompson is a friend of mine. I contributed information for his books. In Chapter 5 there is mention of my encounter with a MIG15& I jettioned my Tip Tanks to be more maneuverable & my wingman told me that the MIG on my tail flew Into the tanks. This was never confirmed but so what I got back to K-14 (Kimpo)in one piece. Warren got with pilots like me who flew 100 combat missions to be authentic & not full of stories. He is a Historian & an excellent author. His Chapters regarding F-80Cs deals with the pilots flying Fighter Bomber missions. These pilots along with F-84 pilots took the brunt of combat losses. They did not have easy missions. I lost many friends.

A work of incredible historical significance.

"To all appearances," wrote Richard Drinnon, "it all began innocently enough with a first victim" (Indian-Hating 35). Indeed, in Drinnon's 'Facing West: The Metaphysics of Indian-Hating and Empire-Building,'those first victims finally have the chance to tell their story through the records of their conquerors. From John Endicott's war on the Niantics and Pequots, to the horrors of the My Lai massacre, Drinnon illustrates, with passion, power and unrelenting wit, how Indian-hating in the Americas became a national pastime, and how that same hate was turned against the native populations of the Phillipines and Southeast Asia. A tremendous feat of scholarship that should not be missed.

The book relates how the body of Christ is now manefesting itself with Asian- Americans as Asian. As a white who was over the last several decades trained to be sensistive to the different types of Asian heritages, this new panAsian church is something strange to me. The book is extremely useful in detailing new trends

Informative child-appropriate view of family life in Vietnam
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-07
We bought this book for our daughter, age 18 months and adopted in Vietnam, thinking she would appreciate it when she was older. I'm sure she will, but we're all enjoying it now also. Having visited and loved Vietnam, we've been disappointed in some other children's books about the country. Some focus on negative differences -- the relative standard of living and the results of the war -- so we found this book's very family-oriented description really refreshing. It's full of great detailed photos, which make it interesting for all ages.

This book is a great resource for upper elementary school children who are looking for information on leading Asian Americans. It is an easy to read format and intriguing for adult readers as well. Photos add great depth to the biographies which are thoroughly researched and extremely interesting. Highly recommend!

As a student and a poet, I was first introduced to Meena Alexander when I was reading an example of what to expect on an Ap test (in English). I started to actually pay attention and read throught the diction and syntax to see what lay beneath, and what I say was magnificent. This book is a collectors piece for psychologists and th ecommon person. After all, who has not asked "Who am I?" This book answers that question for Meena, and if you read it yourself, it may provide a simple answer as well. But don't count on it, for Fault Lines shows us the confliction through conflicting images an example of Humanity itself.

A Glimpse of life in a Thai refugee camp

Review Date: 2006-01-09
This is a kid's book but it gives a brief informative overview of the situation of the Vietnam War and it's far reaching effects such as and the displacement of the Hmong people. It has lots of colorful photos and profiles a few individual cases. This is a good book for adults who are unfamiliar with the Hmong people. Mace Goldfarb is a pediatrician who was a volunteer at the Ban Vinai Refugee camp in Thailand in 1979. Goldfarb indicates that he is also the son of displaced persons.
