Exceptional narrative of a great leaderReview Date: 2004-07-18
He breaks down the book into 4 sections, that each details the start and end of the American Civil Rights movement. Phillips does an amazing job at chronicling the events that most shaped the philosophy of Dr. King.
I truly enjoyed this book because it helped me realize that it is possible for me to achieve my goals using the same techniques that Dr. King used. The book does a great job at outlining how a normal person can create change the way Dr. King did. Whether you live in turbulent times like those in which the Civil Rights took place or not.
I recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position to those who aspire to be leaders, but mostly to those with a goal to succeed. The knowledge you will acquire with this book is invaluable to future successes.
The book targets all, but I think it specifically aims to inspire African- Americans especially those who wish to be in leadership positions. The book in general is a great read for businesses and for groups in general. It informs the audience about the dynamics of groups and how to work through the problems that groups face.
It helps inform leaders as to the advantages and disadvantages of being a leader. Overall the book is a great read. And you will truly enjoy it.
A must read for aspiring leadersReview Date: 2002-11-16
As Donald Phillips points out, for every major turning point in American history, creative leaders - right for the times and uniquely suited to the task - assume the mantle of leadership. Donald Phillips not only describes how MLK ended up at the mantle, but how and why he was the right person for the job.
MLK's movement is not the same civil rights movement being pushed by the self-serving, so-called, activists today. Read this book, you will learn about a true leader and what a true leader is. It is easy reading and inspiring. Highly recommended.

A Closer Walk With TheeReview Date: 2008-08-17
Locksie begins to notice changes in her thoughts and actions, but can't explain it. Dawson begins to notice too and it puts a wedge between them. She feels the intimate moments between them are sinful and needs someone to talk to. Hannah is one of Locksie's clients and a good friend, so she shares her feelings with Hannah, but Hannah has issues of her own at home. Hannah's husband, Elkan brought "baby mama drama" into their marriage. She is trying to forgive him and be a good stepmother, but she is really struggling with it; especially since she's been trying to conceive since their wedding night.
ME, MYSELF AND HIM is a reflective read. Both women ask what do you do when the people you love are not in that same walk with you? Do you stay with them or do you let them go? Locksie and Hannah faced these tough decisions while they were just beginning to find faith, trust and a new love. In reading ME MYSELF AND HIM, I saw some of myself in Locksie. Also, in different areas in the book I felt E. N. Joy was speaking about me. ME, MYSELF AND HIM is a fast-paced read, with believable characters and situations, and a message that God will deliver on time.

Christian Fiction in Fabulous Form!Review Date: 2008-05-21
When Locksie lost her aunt in a fire, she began to look at God in another light, wondering why he would take her precious aunt. Locksie went on a crusade to understand the pain in her life, and the reasons why bad things happened. Locksie finds more than she can handle when she decides to give God a chance once again.
Hannah is Locksie's friend, and she struggles on her own to find herself, and the two have a lot in common with each other. This book was a page-turner. I found myself not going to sleep because I didn't want to put the book down. I was late for work, but it was worth it.
This is a fast-paced novel which is why I couldn't stop reading it. The message I found in the book was that you have to sacrifice a lot of things in your life by letting go, and knowing that God is the ultimate prize. It brought home a few facts to me also.
I am checking out E.N. Joy other's books. She's a very prolific writer, and she's very talented. The book was inspirational and mind-boggling to the soul. I enjoyed this book, I loved it, I understood it, I couldn't put it down, and I am hungry for more. Great job, Ms. Joy, and please keep on writing.
SECURING THE THREE-FOLD CORDReview Date: 2008-05-20
Locksie has a great relationship with her live-in boyfriend Dawson who daily assures her of his undying love. Through her close relationship with her Aunt, Locksie is daily informed of the unconditional love God has for her. Conflicting messages and lifestyle set off an internal tug-of-war within Locksie as she seeks to determine which is the greater love.
Dawson too is in a struggle - the struggle to lead a life deviod of outside interference. Recognizing the changes in Locksie as well as receiving unwanted advice from his younger brother does little to shine light on the future he envisioned. Add to this an eclectic supporting cast and you are placed in the passenger's seat for Locksie's journey to understand who she is and what she will and will not accept from family, friends and lovers.

Tug of LoveReview Date: 2008-06-03
Locksie was no stranger to church as her mother and Aunt Mary were devoted Christians, but her mother was always citing scriptures instead of mother/daughter conversations; this pushed Locksie closer to her Aunt Mary who at least kept it real.
Trying to wash away the sin of fornication in the shower wasn't working anymore and Locksie felt the need to follow her heart which now belongs to God.
Dawson saw the change in Locksie and wasn't happy about it. He was sure of her love and he loved her too; so why can't she stay with the program and do what lovers do? Bringing this question to his younger brother Drake was no help as Drake was also a man of God, dealing with his own daily fight against sin.
Locksie and Dawson's relationship run into trouble as each try to understand the changes that are evident in Locksie but both disagree on what to do about it.
Hannah and her husband Elkan have been unsuccessfully trying to have a baby for years. Elkan has an affair which results in a son. Hannah has to come to terms with this, along with dealing with her stepson's mother Peni; who throws the fact that she's Elkan's ONLY baby mother in Hannah's face every chance she gets!
Hannah and Locksie are confidants who are struggling on their walk with Christ. But what they don't know is that their worlds are going to collided making each woman come to a decision they hope they can live with.
An excellent Christian debut by this seasoned author.
E.N Joy made a giant leap from penning popular secular novels to listening to her soul and moving to the next level in her career.
I am sure all her fans will take this enlightening walk along and continue to enjoy her work as I have.
Thank you Ms Joy, you've done my name proud in this excellent novel of a woman's journey to follow her heart.

GOD Aint Into ThreesomesReview Date: 2008-07-22
Meet Locksie, a young woman with a live in boyfriend Dawson. They have a love that is so strong and unconditional, that it should be the envy of others in a struggling relationship or single person. Things start to change when Locksie starts to have an internal struggle. Unable to shake the feelings that are causing problems in her relationship, they both seek advice. Locksie from her Christian Aunt Mary, who after many talks finally gets her to commit to going to church with her. Locksie is no stranger to church as she grew up in the church with her overbearing Christian mother. Her mother's ways and views on church have left a bad taste in Locksie's mouth to say the least.
Dawson is a handsome young man with a good head on his shoulder. His love for Locksie is evident in all he does. His problem is he doesn't know how to handle this change going on with her. The person he goes to for advice is his younger brother Drake.Low and Behold, Drake is also a Christian leaving Dawson feeling as if he is getting the "holier than thou" from every angle.
Hannah is an acquaintance of Locksie's, whom is dealing with the fact that her husband has done the unforgivable. He went out and had an affair with Peni which resulted in the birth of a child. Now Peni is the most self-centered person around and has lots of fun taunting Hannah with the fact that she has not been able to give her own husband a child.
Through events that take place in this fast moving novel, Hannah and Locksie deal with trials and tribulations that make them share a bond, they become real friends and share a sisterhood.
Praises to E.N. Joy for making me a believer that an Urban Christian book can be just as enjoyable as the typical urban book that I love to read. Me, Myself and Him did not lack for the story line I was looking for. This book has a great story of the struggle between right and wrong. It also has the deceit, underhanded ways of people in general, the trust issues, the cheating, the character Peni you will love to hate, and of course some shockers had me yelling at the book "what in God's name are you doing?".
E.N. Joy keep up the great work and I looking forward to reading your next Urban Christian book.

Be Informed - Stay EncouragedReview Date: 2007-07-20
Kimberly Crouch has indeed written a small treasure with an enormous amount of lifelong wisdom that will help prepare not only African American young males but young females as well for a bright and promising future.
Opening her book with "Know your History" is just one of the many messages the author delivers conveying that knowledge is the safest and the surest emancipation. Too often as parents we neglect to provide necessary information that can strengthen our children; we come from a long line of Kings and our contribution to history is as valid as any other contribution. One of the driving forces of Kimberly's book stresses that our children should always be knowledgeable of the fact that unfortunately racism does exist - sometimes you may be judged by skin color and no other factor. Is life unfair - you betcha, but we have the power and the control as to how we choose to live our lives and how we choose to handle the inequities that do exist.
I loved this book - it's a quick read and a keeper. Each chapter is an affectionate inspirational letter to Kimberly's own sons. Use this book as a guide to constantly reiterate to your children as they are growing that they should always be persistent, remain committed and should never allow anyone to define who they are. One of the most important lessons in the book that even today I keep reminding my own adult children of is to keep a close check on their attitude; it's definitely the one thing you can control and change in a world that does not always provide an equal playing field.
In closing Kimberly reminds us to always keep God first - Lesson eleven is indeed a proverbial message that should always be invoked in everything we teach.

Something else noticeable, she mentions an issue in one letter (lesson), then expands on it in the next. This method, even if unintentional, gives the book a unique flow. I could not put it down.
I give it 5/5 stars. Personally, I will give this book as a gift to everyone I know. I highly recommend this book for all young men (especially young African-American men), mothers (especially single mothers), educators, and the general public.
Know Your HeritageReview Date: 2007-02-05
In reading Mother To Son by Kimberly Crouch, a mother, she provides lessons that will teach, inspire and provide hope for OUR sons. The wealth she espouses includes value, beauty, attitude, inequity, integrity, balance, quantifications, money, peer pressure, education and religion. Unfortunately, the world has gotten colder for our youth, especially OUR African American males. Whether you chose to read this book for you and your sons or for your friends' sons, Mother To Son is a book that should definitely be shared.

An inspiring collection of letters all written by the author to her sons. In them she shares her personal experiences, gives advice, educates, and quotes from various prominent figures. One of many valuable lessons shared in this book is to embrace our African American Heritage. I liked the chapter on "The true measure of a man from a woman's perspective."
I think it's very important to share our own experiences with our children and Ms Crouch has done and excellent job of this in her letters without sounding like she is preaching.
This book is a treasure not only for our sons but our daughters too!
I only have one thought to share as I purchase copies of this book to give as gifts...
EVERY MAN SHOULD KNOW THEIR PAST IN ORDER TO STAND FIRM IN THEIR FUTURE.
Great Job Ms Crouch!!

Let down your guard and enjoy Native GuardReview Date: 2007-11-30
Linda Jo Smith ReviewsReview Date: 2008-04-09
by Natasha Trethewey
Natasha Trethewey's Native Guard is a superb example of storytelling through poetry. Her seamless imagery flows like lyrical essays inviting you into her world of "southern living" as seen by a woman whose mother was black and father white; a product of the infamous unwritten law of the two races mixing in the 1950's.
Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, there is no denying that Trethewey has a distinctive style and demands the attention of word artists. The title poem, Native Guard, is not only a poignant excerpt of Civil War history buried in the hidden archives of the south, Trethewey professes the contributions soldiers of African decent who served this country in the name of freedom for all men.
Native Guard opens with a story/poem of the disappointment of her mother at 16, who left "the dirt roads of Mississippi" on a train to California to meet her father only to find him nowhere in sight. Trethewey sweetly illustrates the torment of physical abuse by her stepfather, mourns the passing of her mother, the cross burning in her front yard, and the beauty of the South with all its degeneracy. Her stories flow in sonnets, a pantoum, and a verse form I have yet to identify illustrated in "Myth" (page 14) which left me awestruck. Her poetry exudes a gentle anger that is soothed with a balm of historical lessons.
Native Guard is familial history and southern history. Trethewey provides notes for the epigraphs she used as well as the sources used to create the title poem "Native Guard."
I highly recommend purchasing this book, if for no other reason, for the fact that the sister won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry! I only wish I counld have purchased the first edition!
A thought provoking read.Review Date: 2007-08-06
This book is great example of powerful modern poetry. I'll recommend it to many. it offers a profound mix of history and personal experience. Trethewey reveals her life and thoughts fearlessly.
"Turning away from the city, as one turns, forgetting, from the past-"Review Date: 2007-12-06
Weighted with temperament and the presence of graveyards, Trethewey paints vivid images of a past aware of its own history and the death of loved ones:
"It rained the whole time we were laying her down:
Rained from church to grave when we put her down.
The suck of mud at our feet was a hollow sound.
I wander now among names of the dead.
My mother's name, stone pillow for my head."
(Graveyard Blues)
Finding portents in simple childhood acts, the more mature poet replays such impulses in a new light:
"how they'd dry like graveside flowers, rustling
when the wind blew- a whisper, treacherous,
from the sill. Be taken with yourself,
they said to me: Die early, to my mother."
(Genus Narcissus)
Bi-racial, the poet blends the spirit of her parents with the inevitability of their destinies and the legacy to their child:
"Already the words are changing. She is changing
from colored to negro, black still years ahead.
This is 1966- she is married to a white man-
And there are more names for what grows inside her."
(My Mother Dreams Another Country)
Recounting the discoveries of childhood with a history in the south- war and miscegenation- I am struck by the poet's embrace of time and place, the troubled years of war and the ubiquitous presence of race in daily life; yet she instinctively draws beauty where there is none, an intimate awareness of her parentage and position in a black and white world she treads so intuitively. There is much to be learned simply by listening to Trethewey's words, caught in the magic of her introspective nature. Luan Gaines/ 2007.

The 'BEST' Bible purchase for true biblical history studies....Review Date: 2007-11-12
When it comes to biblical truth, what is fact should be told! What has been verified as truth, should be told! there is only ONE God who is the ONLY Supreme One! No man should have the audacity to claim supremacy over another simply because of their skin color! To take this attitude into the theological decisions regarding the biblical truth is sad. I love this Bible for it's enlightenment of truth.
Purchasing The Original African Heritage Study Bible should be a must for all people. It is a purchase you will not regret.
