Donald T. Phillips does an exceptional job at narrating the life of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He does an incredible job in tying in the aspects of Dr. King's life as a man, and activist together with the principals of Leadership.

He breaks down the book into 4 sections, that each details the start and end of the American Civil Rights movement. Phillips does an amazing job at chronicling the events that most shaped the philosophy of Dr. King.

I truly enjoyed this book because it helped me realize that it is possible for me to achieve my goals using the same techniques that Dr. King used. The book does a great job at outlining how a normal person can create change the way Dr. King did. Whether you live in turbulent times like those in which the Civil Rights took place or not.

I recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position to those who aspire to be leaders, but mostly to those with a goal to succeed. The knowledge you will acquire with this book is invaluable to future successes.

The book targets all, but I think it specifically aims to inspire African- Americans especially those who wish to be in leadership positions. The book in general is a great read for businesses and for groups in general. It informs the audience about the dynamics of groups and how to work through the problems that groups face.

It helps inform leaders as to the advantages and disadvantages of being a leader. Overall the book is a great read. And you will truly enjoy it.

A must read for aspiring leaders

Donald Phillips did a wonderful job of telling the story of Martin Luther King Jr. from his childhood to his death, and connecting it all to a marvelous leadership style. Being a student of leadership studies and a fan of Martin Luther King Jr., I chose this book as a study of both subjects. Having read it, I have to say I learned more about leadership from this book than any other I have read. However, I am no longer a fan of MLK......... he is now a hero of mine.

As Donald Phillips points out, for every major turning point in American history, creative leaders - right for the times and uniquely suited to the task - assume the mantle of leadership. Donald Phillips not only describes how MLK ended up at the mantle, but how and why he was the right person for the job.

MLK's movement is not the same civil rights movement being pushed by the self-serving, so-called, activists today. Read this book, you will learn about a true leader and what a true leader is. It is easy reading and inspiring. Highly recommended.

An awesome book!

I am a student and a teacher of leadership skills, and I have found no better example than Martin Luther King Jr. This book combines the history of King's movement, but also chronicles the qualities which made King great. The text is easy to read, and fascinating. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Leadership should be required reading for anyone who hopes to impact their world. The famed Harvard psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, who studied moral development, named King as one of the greatest moral thinkers in history. Read this book, and you will understand why.

Insightful!

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech was voted the most electrifying public address of the twentieth century. It takes some kind of a leader to give that kind of a speech. Donald T. Phillips presents the ideals of leadership that Martin Luther King Jr. followed in an overview of the history of the civil rights struggle. Phillips describes the techniques King used at various stages of the civil rights battle. He also shares King's comments on leadership. Many of the principles will be quite familiar: listen to learn, lead by being led, awaken direct action, encourage creativity and involve the people. However, the book is especially interesting when it demonstrates how King put these principles into practice. This well-organized, well-written book is clear, direct, and easy to read. While it is written for the general public (especially for African-Americans and those interested in civil rights), we [...] find this book interesting for all managers and executives, particularly those who like to learn the lessons of history.

A Closer Walk With Thee

Locksie is raised by her mother in a God-fearing home, and dragged from church to church whenever her mother feels a change is needed. But when Locksie becomes an adult, she leaves the church and decides to live her life as she sees fit. She is a manager, hairstylist, and a Mary Kay representative and to Locksie, her life is good. She has the love of her live-in boyfriend Dawson, a fitness trainer, and her favorite aunt Mary. Aunt Mary is a Christian who plays an important role in Locksie's new walk with God and through their daily visits, Locksie learns that God wants to have an intimate relationship with us and that He wants us to submit ourselves to Him.

Locksie begins to notice changes in her thoughts and actions, but can't explain it. Dawson begins to notice too and it puts a wedge between them. She feels the intimate moments between them are sinful and needs someone to talk to. Hannah is one of Locksie's clients and a good friend, so she shares her feelings with Hannah, but Hannah has issues of her own at home. Hannah's husband, Elkan brought "baby mama drama" into their marriage. She is trying to forgive him and be a good stepmother, but she is really struggling with it; especially since she's been trying to conceive since their wedding night.

ME, MYSELF AND HIM is a reflective read. Both women ask what do you do when the people you love are not in that same walk with you? Do you stay with them or do you let them go? Locksie and Hannah faced these tough decisions while they were just beginning to find faith, trust and a new love. In reading ME MYSELF AND HIM, I saw some of myself in Locksie. Also, in different areas in the book I felt E. N. Joy was speaking about me. ME, MYSELF AND HIM is a fast-paced read, with believable characters and situations, and a message that God will deliver on time.

I was surfing amazon.com on what books to buy, and by chance I happened upon "Me, Myself and Him by E.N. Joy. I was hooked, line and sinker by the first page of this delightful book. What drew me to this book was the mention of God and the many scriptures that empowered me. I felt like I was having a relationship with God by reading about him, and thinking about my actions along with the character of Locksie. I could relate to this character in finding herself, and trying to figure out where she belongs. She was living with Dawson, and, of course, sinning according to her aunt, who was trying to save her soul. Is Dawson saved? Can Dawson understand Locksie's plight with God? What is Dawson's relationship with God? I got to know Dawson, and some of the surprising elements of the man were very interesting.

When Locksie lost her aunt in a fire, she began to look at God in another light, wondering why he would take her precious aunt. Locksie went on a crusade to understand the pain in her life, and the reasons why bad things happened. Locksie finds more than she can handle when she decides to give God a chance once again.

Hannah is Locksie's friend, and she struggles on her own to find herself, and the two have a lot in common with each other. This book was a page-turner. I found myself not going to sleep because I didn't want to put the book down. I was late for work, but it was worth it.

This is a fast-paced novel which is why I couldn't stop reading it. The message I found in the book was that you have to sacrifice a lot of things in your life by letting go, and knowing that God is the ultimate prize. It brought home a few facts to me also.

I am checking out E.N. Joy other's books. She's a very prolific writer, and she's very talented. The book was inspirational and mind-boggling to the soul. I enjoyed this book, I loved it, I understood it, I couldn't put it down, and I am hungry for more. Great job, Ms. Joy, and please keep on writing.

Every now and again you come across a book that makes you ponder the reality of purpose. Me, Myself & Him is one such work. In her debut Christian novel, E.N. Joy has done a good job of reaching out to those who can truly identify with the inner struggles of life.

Locksie has a great relationship with her live-in boyfriend Dawson who daily assures her of his undying love. Through her close relationship with her Aunt, Locksie is daily informed of the unconditional love God has for her. Conflicting messages and lifestyle set off an internal tug-of-war within Locksie as she seeks to determine which is the greater love.

Dawson too is in a struggle - the struggle to lead a life deviod of outside interference. Recognizing the changes in Locksie as well as receiving unwanted advice from his younger brother does little to shine light on the future he envisioned. Add to this an eclectic supporting cast and you are placed in the passenger's seat for Locksie's journey to understand who she is and what she will and will not accept from family, friends and lovers.

Locksie and Dawson met three years ago and have been a serious item since. But lately another man has embraced Locksie; and his unconditional love has caused Locksie to have doubts that are threatening to come between her and Dawson!

Locksie was no stranger to church as her mother and Aunt Mary were devoted Christians, but her mother was always citing scriptures instead of mother/daughter conversations; this pushed Locksie closer to her Aunt Mary who at least kept it real.

Trying to wash away the sin of fornication in the shower wasn't working anymore and Locksie felt the need to follow her heart which now belongs to God.
Dawson saw the change in Locksie and wasn't happy about it. He was sure of her love and he loved her too; so why can't she stay with the program and do what lovers do? Bringing this question to his younger brother Drake was no help as Drake was also a man of God, dealing with his own daily fight against sin.
Locksie and Dawson's relationship run into trouble as each try to understand the changes that are evident in Locksie but both disagree on what to do about it.

Hannah and her husband Elkan have been unsuccessfully trying to have a baby for years. Elkan has an affair which results in a son. Hannah has to come to terms with this, along with dealing with her stepson's mother Peni; who throws the fact that she's Elkan's ONLY baby mother in Hannah's face every chance she gets!

Hannah and Locksie are confidants who are struggling on their walk with Christ. But what they don't know is that their worlds are going to collided making each woman come to a decision they hope they can live with.

An excellent Christian debut by this seasoned author.
E.N Joy made a giant leap from penning popular secular novels to listening to her soul and moving to the next level in her career.

I am sure all her fans will take this enlightening walk along and continue to enjoy her work as I have.

Thank you Ms Joy, you've done my name proud in this excellent novel of a woman's journey to follow her heart.

This is my first Urban Christian book, and I am very pleased to say I could not have picked a better one to start with. Author E.N. Joy really kept me captivated in the novel. She had me feeling as if Locksie's struggles were my own.

Meet Locksie, a young woman with a live in boyfriend Dawson. They have a love that is so strong and unconditional, that it should be the envy of others in a struggling relationship or single person. Things start to change when Locksie starts to have an internal struggle. Unable to shake the feelings that are causing problems in her relationship, they both seek advice. Locksie from her Christian Aunt Mary, who after many talks finally gets her to commit to going to church with her. Locksie is no stranger to church as she grew up in the church with her overbearing Christian mother. Her mother's ways and views on church have left a bad taste in Locksie's mouth to say the least.

Dawson is a handsome young man with a good head on his shoulder. His love for Locksie is evident in all he does. His problem is he doesn't know how to handle this change going on with her. The person he goes to for advice is his younger brother Drake.Low and Behold, Drake is also a Christian leaving Dawson feeling as if he is getting the "holier than thou" from every angle.

Hannah is an acquaintance of Locksie's, whom is dealing with the fact that her husband has done the unforgivable. He went out and had an affair with Peni which resulted in the birth of a child. Now Peni is the most self-centered person around and has lots of fun taunting Hannah with the fact that she has not been able to give her own husband a child.

Through events that take place in this fast moving novel, Hannah and Locksie deal with trials and tribulations that make them share a bond, they become real friends and share a sisterhood.

Praises to E.N. Joy for making me a believer that an Urban Christian book can be just as enjoyable as the typical urban book that I love to read. Me, Myself and Him did not lack for the story line I was looking for. This book has a great story of the struggle between right and wrong. It also has the deceit, underhanded ways of people in general, the trust issues, the cheating, the character Peni you will love to hate, and of course some shockers had me yelling at the book "what in God's name are you doing?".

E.N. Joy keep up the great work and I looking forward to reading your next Urban Christian book.

This book is good enjoyed it very much. Would have been helpful if I had a teaching tool of this kind when I had two young males in my home as a single black mother. But as a director of a mentoring program I have to pick and choose what I want and can use becaues we mentor to kids of all race and teaching diversity. I would like to recomend this book to others but it is focusing on the black youth only we need help with all youths.that has problems.and need mentors.

Our youths are our futures, and it is wonderful that someone has picked up the banner to fight for their futures. Mr. Steele, your book was an enjoyment to read. We all must understand that today's youths lack motivation. If there are mentors, and a curriculum or guide to being a better mentor, we will then produce better children and a better society. WELL DONE!!! I cannot wait to read more of your works.

Review Date: 2007-07-20

Kimberly Crouch has indeed written a small treasure with an enormous amount of lifelong wisdom that will help prepare not only African American young males but young females as well for a bright and promising future.

Opening her book with "Know your History" is just one of the many messages the author delivers conveying that knowledge is the safest and the surest emancipation. Too often as parents we neglect to provide necessary information that can strengthen our children; we come from a long line of Kings and our contribution to history is as valid as any other contribution. One of the driving forces of Kimberly's book stresses that our children should always be knowledgeable of the fact that unfortunately racism does exist - sometimes you may be judged by skin color and no other factor. Is life unfair - you betcha, but we have the power and the control as to how we choose to live our lives and how we choose to handle the inequities that do exist.

I loved this book - it's a quick read and a keeper. Each chapter is an affectionate inspirational letter to Kimberly's own sons. Use this book as a guide to constantly reiterate to your children as they are growing that they should always be persistent, remain committed and should never allow anyone to define who they are. One of the most important lessons in the book that even today I keep reminding my own adult children of is to keep a close check on their attitude; it's definitely the one thing you can control and change in a world that does not always provide an equal playing field.

In closing Kimberly reminds us to always keep God first - Lesson eleven is indeed a proverbial message that should always be invoked in everything we teach.

Crouch's "Mother to Son" will become a classic. Written as a series of letters from a mother to her son, it offers practical advice, hope, and foundational wisdom. She does a great job of interweaving her personal experiences as examples of the larger issues.

Something else noticeable, she mentions an issue in one letter (lesson), then expands on it in the next. This method, even if unintentional, gives the book a unique flow. I could not put it down.

I give it 5/5 stars. Personally, I will give this book as a gift to everyone I know. I highly recommend this book for all young men (especially young African-American men), mothers (especially single mothers), educators, and the general public.

Know Your Heritage

Review Date: 2007-02-05
As a teen, I can recall a show, Know Your Heritage. It came on Saturdays and it was sort of a game show where two schools in or around the Chicago area were quizzed on all things black. I'd sit down and confidently answer some of the questions, while others I'd be amazed to find out were apart of my history and made sure I banked it and researched it in order not to lose it. You'd think growing up in an all black school system in an all black neighborhood meant that I'd be privy to facts about my ancestors, our roots and the fact that we were more than slaves. See how important it is for us, all of us, to educate and be educated on the enormous contributions of African Americans.

In reading Mother To Son by Kimberly Crouch, a mother, she provides lessons that will teach, inspire and provide hope for OUR sons. The wealth she espouses includes value, beauty, attitude, inequity, integrity, balance, quantifications, money, peer pressure, education and religion. Unfortunately, the world has gotten colder for our youth, especially OUR African American males. Whether you chose to read this book for you and your sons or for your friends' sons, Mother To Son is a book that should definitely be shared.

Black truly is beautiful and so are you!

An inspiring collection of letters all written by the author to her sons. In them she shares her personal experiences, gives advice, educates, and quotes from various prominent figures. One of many valuable lessons shared in this book is to embrace our African American Heritage. I liked the chapter on "The true measure of a man from a woman's perspective."
I think it's very important to share our own experiences with our children and Ms Crouch has done and excellent job of this in her letters without sounding like she is preaching.
This book is a treasure not only for our sons but our daughters too!

I only have one thought to share as I purchase copies of this book to give as gifts...
EVERY MAN SHOULD KNOW THEIR PAST IN ORDER TO STAND FIRM IN THEIR FUTURE.

As I was reading Mother to Son by Kimberley R. Crouch, I got to thinking how many single mothers we truly have out there. In her book, Crouch shares with readers a number of facts and various situations that will help any mother to raise a son. She gives a number of views by various people that are all encouraging.

I myself have no children, let alone a son. Yet as I reading this, I felt the power and the strength she was conveying to readers. She was real with the experiences she included in the book. I honestly believe that this book will be of great use to not only single mothers, but married mothers as well.

While reading this book, it brought emotions from me that I thought I had long forgot about. This is a story for anyone who has losted a love one due to a long suffering illness, yet it is a story of love and devotion that goes back as far as time and forward as time goes on. It is a story that explains a mother's love, challenges and fears that we all have experienced, especially mothers. The lessons and questions at the end of each chapter can be used for many purposes. One they are a wonderful guide/outline for teachers of social workers or anyone who deals with individuals and families emotional needs. It is also a wonderful tool for those who lead discussion and support groups. It is my opinion that anyone experienced in the healing process for those who have lost love ones will view this book as a vehicle to assist grieving families. It is also a wonderful way for parents to think through the issues of having a homosexual children. In today's society acknowledging that one's child(ren) sexual orientation is different form ours is difficult and we do not often have friends or family to share our concerns. This book provides that place in time for parents to think about their individual situation and to know that they are not alone. I recommend this book for people of all ages and status. It brings the issues of love, family, illness and dying to a common level

When my grand-mother gave me my copy of My Rose, it took me four weeks just read it. It was'nt that I wasn't interested. Its just that its hard to remember something that hurt you inside so deep. But when I did finaly get up enough courage to read it, It revealed to me how strong she was and still is! This book reveals how good God is when you think he's ignoring you prayers. It also explains how HIV/AIDS effects the black family, church, and just the world as a community. What I mean by that is, how some people can be compassionate while then others are ignorant of the disease, so they get scared and either run or fight. More people should be educated about the disease. Then less people would be scared and more people would be aware of the disease

This is a thin book (not the gift edition) but it's very deep. It expresses what modern poetry needs & that is a sense of place & a new historical perspective. I picked this up because of the first poem in the book, Theories of Time & Space & I am not disappointed in the least. This book seems to carve "place" & put you there where the author is experiencing "living."

Let down your guard and enjoy Native Guard

Native Guard
by Natasha Trethewey

Natasha Trethewey's Native Guard is a superb example of storytelling through poetry. Her seamless imagery flows like lyrical essays inviting you into her world of "southern living" as seen by a woman whose mother was black and father white; a product of the infamous unwritten law of the two races mixing in the 1950's.
Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, there is no denying that Trethewey has a distinctive style and demands the attention of word artists. The title poem, Native Guard, is not only a poignant excerpt of Civil War history buried in the hidden archives of the south, Trethewey professes the contributions soldiers of African decent who served this country in the name of freedom for all men.
Native Guard opens with a story/poem of the disappointment of her mother at 16, who left "the dirt roads of Mississippi" on a train to California to meet her father only to find him nowhere in sight. Trethewey sweetly illustrates the torment of physical abuse by her stepfather, mourns the passing of her mother, the cross burning in her front yard, and the beauty of the South with all its degeneracy. Her stories flow in sonnets, a pantoum, and a verse form I have yet to identify illustrated in "Myth" (page 14) which left me awestruck. Her poetry exudes a gentle anger that is soothed with a balm of historical lessons.
Native Guard is familial history and southern history. Trethewey provides notes for the epigraphs she used as well as the sources used to create the title poem "Native Guard."
I highly recommend purchasing this book, if for no other reason, for the fact that the sister won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry! I only wish I counld have purchased the first edition!

A thought provoking read.

As I read these poems, each offers a an insight which calls me to visualize the scenes that are portrayed. I've reread several passages to confirm their impact.

This book is great example of powerful modern poetry. I'll recommend it to many. it offers a profound mix of history and personal experience. Trethewey reveals her life and thoughts fearlessly.

Weighted with temperament and the presence of graveyards, Trethewey paints vivid images of a past aware of its own history and the death of loved ones:

"It rained the whole time we were laying her down:
Rained from church to grave when we put her down.
The suck of mud at our feet was a hollow sound.

I wander now among names of the dead.
My mother's name, stone pillow for my head."
(Graveyard Blues)

Finding portents in simple childhood acts, the more mature poet replays such impulses in a new light:

"how they'd dry like graveside flowers, rustling
when the wind blew- a whisper, treacherous,
from the sill. Be taken with yourself,

they said to me: Die early, to my mother."
(Genus Narcissus)

Bi-racial, the poet blends the spirit of her parents with the inevitability of their destinies and the legacy to their child:

"Already the words are changing. She is changing
from colored to negro, black still years ahead.
This is 1966- she is married to a white man-
And there are more names for what grows inside her."
(My Mother Dreams Another Country)

Recounting the discoveries of childhood with a history in the south- war and miscegenation- I am struck by the poet's embrace of time and place, the troubled years of war and the ubiquitous presence of race in daily life; yet she instinctively draws beauty where there is none, an intimate awareness of her parentage and position in a black and white world she treads so intuitively. There is much to be learned simply by listening to Trethewey's words, caught in the magic of her introspective nature. Luan Gaines/ 2007.

"A Valediction to my father" is phenomenal. It is a marvelous tribute to a loving father.
Having been here, and I never get to see my own father again, I might as well have written this
tribute.
"Oil On Water" exposes in vivid detail the corruption, ineptitude and incompetence of the
Nigerian governments; the inert desires of those who aspire to lead. The hero worshipers are the
press and the ultimate victims of these double tragedy is the populace.

In "The Biafram war 1967-1970," The dictum -no victor , no vanquished is a force, as long as the
south remains marginalized and second class in the land they thought is theirs; and the North
believes that they should rule the country in perpetuity.
"Salute to Rosa Parks," rather be titled "Salute to Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr.,
Malcom X....Heros that made American Dreams Possible for all races.

When I read the poem "Regrets" I was very happy to reflect upon my life and I did not have any regrets.
"A Valediction For my Father," what a beautiful love poem for a beloved father. I only hope my own children feel the same way about me. For some reason the poem "Hotel Del Coronado SanDiego" reminds me of a wonderful love
Ballet by John Coltrain called "Naima."
"19:41 Four Cups and the Dead African" my heart goes out to Ahmadu Diallo, and all of the other victims of police brutality.

The poems took me on an evocative journey to times and places
past and present. Some of the poems are rather on sad themes like bereavement and regrets. In all the poems are triumphant rather
than cynical, bringing out the splendor in things which at first glance look ordinary.

In the poem "Regrets" the poet uses very powerful and vivid words to exhibit great pain, hurt, anger, remorse and despair through his writings. He relates to us, some on going unresolved issues and something real deep haunting him. I liked most his choice of words use in expressing his regrets.

Remarks made based on the poem "A Salute to Rosa Parks" This poet shows his sense of appreciation for freedom, equality and human right. I liked most, his manifestation through his writings that there are no boundaries and all humans regardless of their race, ethnicity, cultural background are entitled to the basic fundamental right to be free.

First things first: This book provides a very interesting and seemingly thorough review of the forms of art to emerge from Harlem. It is worth reading for that reason alone. I would merely caution readers that Kareem is not hesitant to express a resentment against white America. Harlem is a very, very dangerous place, and has been for a long time, but reading this book you would never think that. You would think any acts of violence done there were brought on by caucasian mistreatment, that the Harlem Renaissance was an effort by blacks to overcome all the harm they had been done - and are still done - by whites. Someone of Kareem's influence could have gone about that differently. He could have described the art and literature as he did, mention the influence of black hardship in creating that culture, then at some point mention how black America has the role models it needs to excel. He could have pointed out that while making a living as a writer or a trumpet player is great, carrying and using a handgun with the same intentions is not. I always wished Carlos Santana would make more of a contribution to his culture's growth through his music. Maybe Kareem's next book will make a similar effort.

On the Shoulders of Giants speaks of a bygone, sometimes forgotten piece of America and its culture that nevertheless has great, reaching tentacles into our present, and that will continue to shake and embrace us well into our future. Beautifully written, with a title that says it all, this book is just as evocative and fascinating for non-sports, non-jazz fans as it will undoubtedly be for those entrenched in both subjects.

A wonderful discovery.

God is Awesome.... This Bible has actually opened my eyes to information not found in my 65 years of Bible study.... Every Family should own one of these.... I now have a different perspective of how God uses who He chooses in order to do His will and that no one race or ethnicity is any better than another.... Also, I can now show my children's Sunday School class how each race had an integral part in biblical history.... Thanks for the opportunity to review this magnificent historical account.....

Although I have other KJ versions, this is the best buy that I've ever made because of the TRUTH regarding biblical geography! Once I purchased this one, everything fell into place in an accurate manner as I used my biblical study maps, books and other study tools for reference. Has anyone noticed how here in the West, Noah and his family are skimmed over, Abraham is spoken of briefly, but a rush is made to tell the stories of Moses and David as if they are the beginning of humanity? Check your own study maps and books! How many, if any, give indepth info or mention of Noahs family tree? Amazing! Simply amazing how so-called theological scholars had the NERVE to eliminate others from the Bible! In addition, may I mention how the names and geographical lines were drawn up to divide/change the biblical locales? For starters, I suggest the map book titled, 'Then And Now Bible Maps' which can be found right here on Amazon between $12 and $14 only. It has clear plastic overlays showing the old world and the world as it is today. It is a great beginners map for a reasonable price. I must say, however, common sense should tell the average person that caucasians were NOT of Eastern heritage! (Here I'm referring to all of the biblical pictures, drawings and... let's not forget movies!) Their skin peels and turns red as a beet as they lay out in the sun trying to get a "TAN" to make their skin color darker, due to the lack of melanin!!!!!! As we all know, the temperatures in the East are much hotter and stronger!

When it comes to biblical truth, what is fact should be told! What has been verified as truth, should be told! there is only ONE God who is the ONLY Supreme One! No man should have the audacity to claim supremacy over another simply because of their skin color! To take this attitude into the theological decisions regarding the biblical truth is sad. I love this Bible for it's enlightenment of truth.

Purchasing The Original African Heritage Study Bible should be a must for all people. It is a purchase you will not regret.
