DB's Wolf Woman ReviewReview Date: 2002-11-25
Wolf-Woman is about a girl named Tanith who was an Indian of an unknown tribe. The Indians had put her with wolves to be found by someone else. Ahearn, the leader of a village, found Tanith. Ahearn's village was not an Indian village. Tanith is brought to live in the house of Ahearn. Ahearn's wife, Nolwynn, is happy to adopt Tanith because she had lost her own child.
Later on, Nolwynn dies. Everyone was sad for a few weeks. Then Ahearn got remarried to a woman named Morag. Morag and Tanith don't get along. So Morag sends her on a task. While Tanith is gone, Morag tells Ahearn she ran away. When Tanith returned, Ahearn sends her away. She returns again later and she discovers that when Ahearn had been looking for her, a bear had attacked him.
Tanith is given a medicine in the village to make her think wolves are bad when it is discovered that Tanith has been visiting the wolves again.
She falls in love with a man the same age named Gibran. Tanith goes with Gibran to a village where he was born. When they get there, they are given gifts and presents and have a big feast for Gibran's return. While visiting Gibran's village, Tanith starts to see things and when she recovers she sees that Gibran had a cut on his face, and realizes that she has done it.
She runs back to her former village and finds that four of the wolves that she had known and loved are lying dead on the ground in front of the village. Tanith runs into the forest to the fifth wolf that has not been killed. She finds out that the wolf has mated with another female wolf and that they have wolf cubs.
My favorite character was Tanith because she can understand the wolves, is friends with them, and was living happily with the wolves. Tanith has to choose which cry to answer: the wavering, longing bellow of the human or the steady, beating call of the wolf. I also like Gibran because he is strong, brave, kind, fierce, and soothing to Tanith, and he just seems like a really nice, caring guy. I also like him because it does not seem to bother him that he is not Indian and Tanith is an Indian.
I recommend the book because it is an exciting story. It is an adventure that makes you want to know what is going to happen next. There is sadness and anger in the book but I liked that because it made the story seem realistic. There is also happiness because Tanith gets to be with the wolves again.
My opinion of the book is a 9 out of 10 because they don't explain a few things very well such as not saying from what tribe Tanith comes. I wish they had a sequel for the book.

The book starts with a motto from Toni Morrison: "If there is a book you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." I don't know if this is Ms. Brenner's first writing attempt and if this is the kind of book she has always wanted to read, but I think she did a decent job. However, don't expect to find anything extraordinary or deep, that will give you some food for the thought. It won't teach you too much about wine either. Most probably this is what the book was meant to do - appeal to the larger public.
I was a bit put off by the fact that the women it speaks about are only from the US, more exactly from California. The world of wine is so large! And if the pictures were colored instead of B&W, it would have been even better.
Women of the Vine definitely does not make a statement. As someone once said, it is like a summer rain: short, pleasant, one tends to forget it quickly. It is the kind of book I would read and then pass it on to someone else, without wanting necessarily to keep it in my library. It is just a pleasant way to kill some time.
For a more informative narrative on wine and the passion for wine, try Love by the Glass: Tasting Notes from a Marriage by Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher. And for a larger geographical coverage of the women in the industry try Women of Wine, by Ann B. Matasar.

I have read excerpts from this book to friends at parties, given it as gifts to girlfriends coast to coast, office compatriots and relatives. To realize I am not alone out there in the corporate world of men, kids, balancing it all and keeping a smile on my face, was like breathing for the first time in a long time.
I feel that I have a friend in Mimi O'Bara. I hope she is encouraged to continue writing. I'm sure there's more stories to tell. Her humor, insight and reality keeps me smiling!

How to Live In the MomentReview Date: 2006-10-06
A self-help book that truly breaks the mold, Your Heart Knows The Answer offers insightful ways to recognize the voices of your heart; voices that are accepting, non-judgmental, non-authoritative, yet also visionary, creative, and celebratory. With each chapter, Gail offers affirmations and meditations, and encourages journaling to dialog with your heart.
In her chapter on Expressing Your Creative Self, Gail details how each of the Nine Muses from Greek Mythology might impact our own creative explorations and discoveries - having been a blocked artist, this chapter was exceptionally motivating for me.
Gail also offers a loving chapter on accepting and honoring your body - whatever physical shape its in - it serves you in so many ways. Only by showing compassion and respect for your sacred body can you make any changes in a responsible and healthy way.
Perhaps the most enlightening chapters for me are the last two: Opening to a Spiritual Partnership and Discovering Your Truth in the Moment. We are taught not only how to recognize our Higher Self, but to respect and honor Her for what she communicates to us. Would she choose to be in a relationship that doesn't foster spiritual growth in some way? A spiritual relationship can allow us to go deeper within ourselves and challenge us to renew and even heal ourselves. No matter your level of self-esteem, you will also learn to recognize whether you are sacrificing your self-respect to be with someone who doesn't value or honor you as a person - and that you may be losing your sacred sense of yourself in the process.
The last chapter reminded me of the importance of living in the present moment - that it is the only way to live as an empowered, creative person - and the only place where your higher self can communicate with you, to bring a sense of peace and acceptance. Gail suggests that when painful things happen in our lives - and they will - that we should choose to be accepting of them, rather than to resist Life. Resisting life and harboring anger can cause us to suffer. Honoring our truths include an awareness of anger, disappointment, doubt, fear, jealousy, joy, compassion, ecstasy and divine love. Experiencing the entirety of our lives is the only way we can truly find contentment. Although this book speaks primarily to a spiritual awakening in women - a man can also find that his heart knows the answer, despite having lived most of his life following the voices in his head.

Inspiring!!Review Date: 2006-05-07
Making the right choices for your life isn't very hard to do, once you know how. The problem is that we don't know how! Finally, this great book has come our way giving us just the right guidance on how we can get out of the negative "voices in our head" and start learning how to really listen to the "voices in our heart." The messages that we receive from our heart are the most positive and unconditionally loving voices. These voices are connected to our Higher Self that wants only the best for us. Our Higher Self wants us to be happy, healthy, prosperous, and always feel that we are unconditionally loved. Once you are truly "in-tuned" with your Higher Self and you learn to really listen, your life will miraculously change for the better!
Learning how to tell the difference between the "voices in our head" and the "voices in our heart" can easily be determined by how you "feel." Are you happy? Are you joyful? Do you feel unconditionally loved? Or...Are you always putting yourself down and feeling unworthy as well as unlucky in many areas of your life?
What do you truly desire? That is the big question! If you want and choose to have a great life, filled with abundance, joy, prosperity, and unconditional love...you CAN have it! All you have to do is learn to listen to the positive voices of your heart and stop giving in to the negative voices in your head.
Gail Harris is a marvelous author and I couldn't put this book down since opening the first page. She gives us so many examples of what happens when we do listen to the voices in our heads as well as showing us how our lives DO improve by listening to the voices in our heart. I noticed an improved change in my own life by the time I got to the second chapter. By the time that I had read through the whole book, my outlook and practice of listening to the voices of my heart has made a huge positive change for me.
If you have been suffering with anxiety, stress, or just feeling overwhelmed with life (and who doesn't) I promise you that if you read this enjoyable book and do some of the personal ceremonies and practices that she recommends, you too will be feeling so much better. You will learn how to change your stress filled days into minutes, and hours, filled with more positive control and peace than you have ever had before!
Don't allow your EGO (the negative voices in your head) to have control over your life any longer! You will feel so good about yourself by the time you finish reading this book that it's like you've turned from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly!
Every woman on the face of this Earth, of every age, should have a copy of this great book! Thank you so much Gail Harris for helping us all understand what beautiful women we are and showing us the techniques that allow our true souls to shine through! You are such an inspiration!

Teaching Saving Toward a Goal...Review Date: 2007-11-30
I like that Abby is not always spending her money on herself, but sometimes spends it on friends. Toward the end, this idea is again repeated when she has extra money that she chooses to spend on friends, teachers, and family. Appreciating others is a nice subtle message in this book.
The book has a mixture of text and diary like entries which makes it fun for kids to read. Abby tries a few different ways to earn money which are nicely woven into the story. I am always on the look out for books using a fictional story to teach children about money (as they seem to be fairly rare). This was certainly a worthy find.

So you don't like your cube at work? Maybe it's time to move into a real office or start your own business?Review Date: 2007-08-30
This book was kind of fun to read. I liked the author's frankness and humor. But I wasn't particularly impressed with how the title of the book was matched to its content. The book totes itself as a supposedly helpful career guide for young women just out of high school or maybe college who work in a cubical in an office environment. And it explains how young women can do some investigating and networking to learn about opportunities outside of a cube. But many of the opportunities discussed in this book were 9 to 5 JOBS. And the title says it is against such career moves.
I would have liked the book much better if it had stuck to explaining how to get out of a cube and make the transition into self-employment. Or if the title were changed, I would have like the book much better if it had only explained how to escape a cube into a more meaningful and lucrative job with an office or a company car. Of course, I wouldn't have pulled this book from the bookstore shelf if it was about the latter because I pretty much just review books that relate to my volunteering for SCORE, the small business coaching nonprofit.
The part of the book that I enjoyed the most was the author's story of how she had found herself stuck in a cube at age 24 and not doing what she wanted to do with her life - which was to do freelance writing. She decided to quit her job and start her own freelancing small business. And she found she couldn't make money at it at first - but she was resourceful and started temping in order to pay her bills while she got her business off the ground. Of course, I would have liked her story better if she were to have said she got her business WELL off the ground within a year or two. But unfortunately she says she continues to dabble in temping jobs from time to time to make ends meet. That doesn't sound like she has really accumulated enough of her own success to be writing this book, but some company did publish it and there are quite a number of positive book reviews posted on Amazon for it. So who am I to judge?
My favorite chapters were "I want a more flexible work schedule" (4), and "I want to be my own boss" (6). These two chapters were right on point when it comes to dumping a day job and starting one's own business. And in the book's appendix I very much liked "A Temp's Survival Guide" and "Boss in a Box." The "Must-See Resources" section in the appendix also seemed to be fairly informative. The checklists at the end of each chapter were well-thought out, too. 4 stars!

Aunt Dimity series is the BEST!Review Date: 2008-07-05
I really enjoyed this book. The story grabs you from the start and you know another good adventure is ahead for Lori. The author adds every day life events and mixes in some mystery, that makes you want to keep reading to the very end to solve it!
Nancy Atherton has done it again with her thirteenth book in the `Aunt Dimity' series. I never get tired of this series about Lori Shephard and the situations she finds herself in. She always comes back to opening her blue book and waiting for Aunt Dimity to speak (or actually write to her from the other side), so she can talk to her about her adventures and get advice.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that wants a good, easy and enjoyable adventure to read. Also, I would read the rest of the series too!
This is one series that will bring a smile to your face and a good feeling after every book!
