I am a big fan of the Christmas Box books, but when I saw this book I thought UHHHHHH I guess he needs even more money. RPE must have realized that he was a flash in the pan, and was desprate to hang on to his falling fame. This book does have its moments though, but it sounds like a broken record. They were giving this book away.. a free copy with every $10 purchase. I wish RPE would get over himself he's no Charles Dickens!!!

Unfortunately I read this after reading "The Light of Christmas" so I knew most of the story line but it was still worth the read. It is a simple story with a powerful message about the importance of our individual lives and the lives of those who love us. The Christian message of hope in life is prevalent but subtle and doesn't come across as 'preaching' while still delivering its impact.

I get a small gift for each of my children on mother's day to basically thank them for without them I would not be a mother. She is soon to be 13 and this was a perfect book for her. She reads bits of it each night and talks with me about it too. Great book!

This is a nice little book full of quotes for girls, women too. The cover says these quotes are "Empowering and inspirational" and I found that to be true. There are quotes here from women from all walks of life, like Rosanne Cash, Jane Bryant Quinn, Janis Joplin, to name a few, and there are even quotes by some people you've never even heard of, like Debbie Tsai, age fifteen who says, and I quote, "Life is like a bus: you can get on it and go somewhere, or you can just sit there and watch it pass you by." I for one am getting on the bus, you should too. And you should get this little book for the girl in you or the girl in your life.

I purchased this book several years ago, and just took it off my bookshelf to re-read it again - and I just have to say that I have truly enjoyed being reminded of the pearls of wisdom strewn throughout these pages!

"The Girls' Book of Wisdom" has 45 short chapters - each characterizing a different part of life. These chapters start off with a small but insightful discussion on that topic, followed by a bunch of really great quotes - some by famous people, some by not-so famous people, and quite a few from the teenagers of America. There really is a great variety of thoughts & perspectives - a great way to learn about thoughts/ideas you may not have considered.

Some of the chapters included are:
Self Awareness
Journal Keeping
Solitude
Loving Yourself
Confidence
Beauty
Health
Intuition
Leadership
Adversity
Optimism
Success
Happiness
Giving Back

And many, many more...

Overall, I found this book to be a fun, easy, insightful, inspirational read, and would highly recommend it to all those teenage girls out there (since much of the "pieces of wisdom" are geared to help you to grow into self-confident, self-sufficient women), as well as for women (there's a lot of great insights in there for us too - smile). It would be a great gift for someone to give their daughter &/or neice!

This book by Mattieu Ricard really breaks down happiness. He differentiates between pleasure and happiness and how happiness is something that must be cultivated and practiced. Mattieu Ricard also gives a handful of in depth meditation exercises at the end of a few chapters. And he points out that you don't have to be a Buddhist monk to achieve enlightenment, but everyone can reach a better plateau of happiness.

I've got to admit that the writing is so deep that sometimes I have to only read a couple of pages and then take a break. But don't let that deter you. Within 1 or 2 chapters I was feeling happier than I think I ever have. And this from a mildly chronically depressed person.

It does rely heavily on Buddhism but it IS a Buddhist writing it )). For the ultra religious, don't worry. He does not shove his beliefs down your throat. It is just his examples are from his life so that are flavored that way.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested i attaining happiness.

Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill

This is the best book I have ever read on the subject of happiness. A real treasure.
Happiness is not a mystery but a possible goal for anyone who seriously wants to become a happier and better person. If you love science, literature and culture, Matthieu Ricard is the right guru for you.
A must read for everyone who loved his book "The Monk and the Philosopher".
A book you won't ever part with for you'll want to read in it again and again.

Change yourself for the better

Review Date: 2008-04-06
This book has been written by the world's happiest person. Neuroscientists have conducted various tests on thousands of people including the author and have come to the conclusion based on scientific proof. It is therefore necessary to keep that piece of information at the back of your mind when you read the book.

Every word in the book comes out loud and clear as having been created by a truly happy and contented person.

Simply by reading the book and following some of the exercises that the author suggests, you can transform yourself from a tense and neurotic being into a joyful, stress free person.

Though the author is a Buddhist monk, this book is not about Buddhism nor does it attempt to convert one to that religion. This is a practical, down to earth method to learn to be happy.

The Need for Practice

Review Date: 2008-03-30
This is just a footnote to the other reviews, especially the one that wants more of the "how" to implement the author's suggestions.
Ricard is one of the finest students of one of the finest teachers of the Tibetan tradition as is, for example, the very popular author Pema Chödrön.
Chödrön's books and "Happiness" by Ricard share the same characteristic: they make great inspirational reading BUT in the absence of a regular meditative discipline they remain only that.
There is a great abundance of excellent books (which by the way are not enough on their own), and there are even quite a lot of excellent teachers, who can guide one with regard to that regular practice.
Of course what "practice" is is something that must be investigated by you yourself. The many exercises found throughout Ricard's book, if assiduously undertaken, are material enough for a thorough familiarization with practice as I understand it.
I wish you the very best in your quest,
Richard Wrigley.

I was just posting a link to this book onto my blog when I noticed the editorial review from Publishers Weekly totally panned it. What a joke! This book came highly recommended to me and I loved it. I almost didn't get to finish because my wife heard me laughing so often, she started reading it and every time I set it down, she'd grab it.

If your spiritual life isn't everything you think it should be, pick up this book and be ready to learn and to laugh. It's definitely no panacea (nothing is) but it certainly points the way to, what may be for you, a new way of looking at the living of your life. I HIGHLY recommend this book to you!

This book will help transform your life into the one that Jesus intended you to live. So, climb aboard, strap yourself in, and hold on!

Charlotte signed my guest book and it drew me to her website. I am very glad it did because her story is encouraging and hopeful. It shows me that I'm not alone in doing my own will in disobedience to God, but that He is merciful and loving and doesn't judge me or see me as I see myself.

While my life doesn't compare to her in most ways, I did identify with Charlotte in several others. And I noticed how well the scriptures she uses every few pages totally fits her situation. Those spoke to me as well.

Ms. Johnson, keep on the narrow path and remain thankful for everything He does for you. I am now ready to read your book Mama's Pearls. You have brought me back closer to God with this book and I look forward to wisdom from you dear mother. I too get dreams from God like her.

One Woman's Struggle

My sister recently bought me a book. She not being an avid reader and all, it shocked me. She purchased "A Journey To Hell And Back" by Charlotte Russel Johnson. Charlotte is a local author from here in Columbus, GA.

This book really touched me deep into my soul. It's a story of a very hard life started at a very young age. Charlotte told about how she grew up in the projects, left the projects and only to return to the saftey of the projects. She told us how she sold drugs right here on Victory Dr. A street many of us drive everyday. She told how she partied in Phenix City, right across the river where many of us work and/or live.

Charlotte went through so much. She sold herself as a prostitute. She married a man who abused her to no end. She even discusses how she received her 2nd and 3rd degree burns. She tells you the stories of her many trials she had to endure not only here in Columbus, but also in Atlanta and in New York.

Yet through all of this she has prevailed. She showes you how she was able to pull through and become a better person. For anyone who thinks their life is so far gone, or so far down in the dumps and it can't change, take a moment and read this heart touching story of one woman's struggle. And it all happened right here in our own community!!!!!

Thank You Charlotte for sharing your story!!!

I have read "A Journey To Hell And Back" by Charlotte Russell-Johnson, and found it to be a most inspiring book, and very relevant to many young women of today, who are in need of the kind of guidance and insight offered by this book. I have also had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte Russell Johnson, and from my two encounters with her, I believe her to be as genuine as her personal testimony. Her book is a must-read for every young woman in search of direction for her life. I encourage everyone to read this book. It will keep you engaged from the front page to the back.

Signs of the Times: 2007 Update

Review Date: 2007-11-10
Very readable summary of 10 key signs that point to the soon return of Jesus Christ. Even many secular people are looking at the world's problems and wondering how mankind will survive. Kinsella surveys the world situation and ties them back to biblical references.

As the title of the book suggests, Kinsella makes the case that we are in the last generation. He doesn't set dates. No one knows exactly when the last generation began. Many think it was the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Maybe in 1967 when the Israelis once again gained East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. And no one knows how long a generation is. But Kinsella proves that we are in the general season of the Lord's return.

Kinsella writes in a conversational style that is very readable. Almost reads as if he is talking to you in your living room. He writes the same way on his website as he analyzes breaking news.

Couple of nitpicks in the book: I was confused on pages 63-64 when he says that 1 BC and 1 AD are the same year. I think I understand what he is saying is that there was no year 0. In any event, it deserved a little more explanation. On page 79, he incorrectly listed 1977 as the year that the Iranian students seized the American hostages. (Should be 1979). On page 168, the capital of Turkey should be Ankara.

Overall, these little problems do not detract from the main message. Kinsella makes the point that bible prophecy is not doom and gloom but is one of hope and redemption.

This is by far, one of the very best books of prophetic facts I have ever read. The gifted observations of Jack Kinsella is in full color in this astounding volume of current facts, trends, and events, relative to Bible prophecy. The stunning intellect and insight depicted in this book would assuredly cause even the staunchest doubter of Bible prophecy a stumbling block for logical debate. While many words come to mind to describe this book, "Astounding", "Eye-opening", and "Breathtaking", are just a few that come to my mind.

I highly recommend this book to both the student of eschatology and doubter alike.

Just think: with these four volumes, you'll be able to pray ANY of the prescribed hours, at any time and day of the year. Knowing that you're in company with millions of others doing the same thing is awe-inspiring and spiritually enriching. These are very easy to use so there's no excuse not to enter into the prayer life of the Church. Mass for me is made even better when I arrive early and read the Office. I personally find Night Prayer comforting and extremely nourishing-- it helps me get ready for the coming day, and soothes my conscience during the examination. If the set comes with the handy annual Index, helping you to find each day's prayers... all the better! Otherwise you can get that Index at a religious goods store-- it costs about three dollars.

Delivery was more than prompt, approximately three days! But I ordered the same bible shortly afterward, the NIV One Year Bible and it is so much easier to understand than reading the old language version. This is a good bible, but I just prefer the other one, using current language pattern. Amazon purchases are always more than satisfactory, in my opinion! Delivery time is amazing!

The One-Year Bible is very motivational in its arrangement. I have used other reading plans with my Bible but there is just a mind set of accomplishing more if you read front to back rather than flipping around in the Bible to read each day. You can see how much you have read and how far it is to the end. There's also a guilt thing if you get behind. You know you have to catch up soon or forget it. It's just a personal thing.

I already knew that this was a CD-ROM and not a book, and the seller promptly reminded me about this before shipping out. I wanted the CD version anyway. The seller shipped promptly and the item appeared in mint condition; HOWEVER, this CD-ROM is NOT COMPATIBLE with neither Windows XP, nor with Vista.

It is compatible with the following Operating Systems:
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT4, and Windows 2000. You must have Intel Pentium processor or greater, and 12MB or more available RAM.

Macintosh Users for this CD-ROM should have: Power PC System 7.5.3 or later with 12MB or more available RAM.

Luckily for me, I have two laptops - one with a Windows 2000 Operating System, which I move about with, and the other a Windows XP, which is lighter for me when I am on the go.

If I had known about the CD-ROM's Operating Systems' Capability, I would not have purchased it. I still installed it on my other laptop though which I hardly use when I am on the go, but which I still use as a stand alone computer at home.

I had read the entire Bible three times using the One Year Bible. I got bored with my Bible studies for awhile and so I did these daily 15-30 minute readings to keep myself spritually nourished. I have also listened to the NIV Bible on Casette from cover to cover five times one year because I had read a book by Phiilip Yancey that had advocated trying to read the entire Bible to gain an insight into your problems. I alternated versions in my daily reading from year to year-NIV and NLT.
I would have liked the ONE YEAR BIBLE better if it had a traditional leather binding. It is convenient that the readings for the day are arranged in an easy to use format.

Beautiful story

Review Date: 2008-03-24
A beautiful book written by a former Jewish Journalist of Austrian origin who travels to the middle east and stands in admiration at the lifestyle of the Muslims in the Arabian peninsula.

Although his embrace of Islam is not immediate he comes to understand the beauty of this religion and finally embraces it while in Europe. He later decides to move to live in Arabia by giving up completely his western lifestyle and past, the story focuses on many various events and I found it quiet impressive as to the amount of famous persons Mr. Asad has come accross in his journey in the middle east, some of which are: King Ibn Saud (founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), the president of the world Zionist organisation (who is later to become the first president of Israel), the Shah of Iran, the famous Lybian Mujahidin Omar Al Mukthar, the King of Jordan Abdullah and many other.

Although the book is quiet old, as it recounts of events which occur in the 1920's, it is very well written and beautifuly explains the beauty of the life in Arabia in those times, it gave me a nice image and picture of the life of the beduins, their hospitality and gratitude from life and it's simplicity but how the people live it full of happyness. I was quiet impressed as well with the many events which have occured during the travel of Mr. Asad, in his attempt to help the King Ibn Saud to understand how the rebels operated against the King in order to prevent the Kingdom from successful establishment, to his travel to Lybia to meet Omar Al Muhtkar for possible assistance on providing additional support to continue the rebellion against the Italians.

In overall, the story is quiet beautiful, gives us a nice feeling of the Arabian desert and most of all the discovery to Islam of Mr. Asad is an impressive story to read.

I have always felt a longing for the desert. This is the first time I have ever read someone putting these feelings into words. Simply awsome!

This book is a very enjoyable read. Asad's stories of adventure and his search for personal fulfillment provide constant historical, cultural, and religious lessons for the reader. A wonderful way to learn and understand other people and their ideas, which may or may not be different from your own.

I read this book a while ago and can still remember some of the most thrilling parts of the book. Even thought the book is an autobiography it almost reads like a thriller. I reccomment this book to all Muslims. MUhammad Asad is truly an example for all.

Simply enlightening!

M. Asad has written a truly inspiring work with "The Road to Mecca". As a foreign journalist in the Middle East, he was in a unique position to truly experience the culture and religion of the area and express his experiences in a way in which only a journalist could. What caught my eye was what happened when he returned to Europe where he suddenly felt like an outsider who was surrounded by people simply sleepwalking through their lives. It was after this revelation that he truly grasped the draw that so many feel towards Islam awakening within himself. As a muslim convert myself, I felt that this was something that I could closely relate to. Nonetheless, I believe that M. Asad's novel was not only inspiring but also a useful, insightful resource into understanding the countries and cultures of the Middle East; something which is useful to muslims & non-muslims alike. I would highly recommend this book to all.

THIS BOOK IS LIFE CHANGING. I THINK THE RABBI HAS HIS THUMB ON THE TRUE WAYS TO GET WEALTH. IT IS A BOOK FOR THE WHOLE MAN AND NOT JUST ABOUT MONEY.

Some good points but difficult to read...

While this author has some good points and wisdom to share it is a very difficult read because it is horribly wordy. The author seems to go on and on and on about each topic/point. I found it very boring and difficult to read (and I love to read self-help books and have quite a collection of them). I think that the author should have either hired a ghost writer or the editor should have done a better job of cutting the wordiness out of the text. I finally started reading the summaries at the end of the chapters instead of the chapters itself. This had the potential to be a good book if it had been written in an easy read format. It would have been a much shorter book, though.

This is a wonderful book about human culture and the beliefs, attitudes and culture of wealth and prosperity. The book is full of basic wisdom and is an enjoyable and educational read for anyone, regardless of race, creed or national origin. I purchased several copies and gave them as gifts with enthusiastic responses all around.

I believe the world is a better place if we all prosper, and according to this book, we can.

He has done an impressive job in presenting how the Jewish people view making money. Truly, it's in how you view your contribution to others that both can be in a win-win situation. Intense reading, take your time in absorbing the information.

Rabbi Lapin begins by debunking the myths of why Jews are disproportionately successful in business. He then provides a powerful set of principles - the 10 commandments of making money - that can be applied by anyone. What is particularly powerful about the presentation are the spiritual links that Lapin provides from the Torah and the Talmud, as well as a sprinkling of teachings from the Kaballah. After reading this book, you have a strong understanding why business and making money are fundamentally spiritual undertakings. There also interesting and revealing teachings, especially for non-Jews, about the role of Hebrew in the Jewish faith, the meaning of the Star of David, and much more. If you want to grow financially and spiritually, read this book.
