Very interesting book. He is the typo of pro I admire and respect. I have been an account planner al my long adman career, 60 years. I have always been a Bernbachian monk and I see the author is a similar person.

I strongly believe that account planning exists to help create advertising - a supporting role not leading. It is an important element but is by no means a substitute for an fresh new idea beautifully executed.
Account planning should not be misused. It is a tool to help the creators.

Since I'm Brazilian and all my life worked on American accounts, I believe the author's British writing maybe is not as clear as the Americans.

Excellent book, concise and insightful.

Really, I suppose, the type of book a planner should write.

It is a great introduction to what a planner is and does. A good textbook for anyone involved in advertising or dealing with ad agencies. A brilliant "manual" for planners.

The best planning book I've read to date

There is a huge shortage of good account planning books. This effort by Jon Steele makes up for it. He is a man passionate about advertising (that's evident throughout the book) and very good at it too.

Jon covers the theoretical and practical aspects of account planning thoroughly and provides insights and advice for planners at all levels, account management staff, creative staff and clients.

Reading this book will show you how to improve the quality of your advertising product. It has certainly helped me do that at the agency I work for in New Zealand. One of the best buys I've made on Amazon.

25 years ago I used to read this book over & over & over to my baby sister. After I had kids of my own we used to talk about how much we loved this book. She has searched for it over the years even though we could only remember clever bits from it. A little while ago she found it! I'm ordering a copy for myself and both my grandchildren. She is the best Aunt in the Universe! Thanks

About 25 years ago, I had a copy of this book. I remember reading and re-reading it for hours on end, mesmerized by the drawings and the round-and-round stories. I remember all the stories and poems being short enough that I could read them in a minute or two, but could ponder them for days. It was a fantastic experience for me at seven years old, and I can honestly say this was the most memorable book I ever owned. I still remember the pictures and writings in "Arm In Arm" like yesterday even though I have forgotten about some of the books I still have.

I lost my copy 25 years ago, and at least once a week since then, the "dark and stormy night" story will pop into my head with the image of the ships going round and round in a circle, getting smaller and smaller as the story kept going round and round without end. I remember thinking that if I just had a magnifying glass strong enough, I could keep reading the story forever!! It was that kind of wonder that made this book so memorable and treasured.

I have kept telling myself that I was going to research the book and find it and get a copy, but never took the time. No disrespect to Mr. Charlip, but over the years I had forgotten the title and author, so I thought my chances of finding it were slim. Finally, today, I spend about 15 minutes on the Internet and found it. I am looking forward to getting my new copy and reading it with my three children (7, 5 and 2 years old). I can't wait to share this magnificent work of literary art with them. It is truly timeless. Thank you, Remy.

What a thrill to find this book again!

As a child some 30 years ago I used to borrow this book from the library again and again. In my late teens I thought it would be a kick to look up that most favorite childhood book, only to find it available no more. But now I can buy it! I still remember so many of those goofy, beautifully illustrated mind twisters, but I'm really going to love seeing the ones that time has long hidden from my memory.

This book is a nostalgic treasure that has definitely stood the test of time, I've no doubt it continues to enthrall young people today. And I'm very pleased for Remy Charlip, in finding in these reviews that SO MANY of us remember this book from 20-30 years ago, went out of our way to track it down, and continue to share this book with future generations!

Jerry Smath, But No Elephants (Parents Magazine Press, 1992)

Cute little beginning reader about prejudice and the power that every member of a society (or a household) can bring to the table. Repetition will enable younger readers to get some of the words they might not grasp the first time around, the illustrations are fun, and the story is sure to keep the kiddies entertained. May strain parents' nerves after the hundredth reading, but it's certainly enjoyable enough the first ninety-nine times. *** ½

But No Elephants (Once Upon a Time)

I had to read this story EVERY NIGHT until the book fell apart, and I LOVED every minute of it! This is a beautiful story of how one's heart can soften over time - and is now a classic family favorite. Shame on whoever decided to let this go out of print. I just bought three more, while I can still get them. 1 for each of my children to read to their kids (and they're not even born yet!) and one to donate to my local elementary school. Hopefully, that way hundreds of kids will get the same enjoyment as we have over the years. Long live Grandma Tildy!! :-)

Even with our children now in high school, college, and beyond, this book is still quoted at family gatherings. At the dinner table when someone is asked if they would like more roast beef (or salad, or whatever) a frequent response is "well, OK, but no elephants!" I recently purchased this book for my college-bound son as a graduation gift because he has such fond memories of reading it and having it read to him as a youngster. If you haven't read it, you're missing out on a real gem.

This book is a near perfect example of what a children's book shouold be. In this day and age, when celebrities write children's books because they are easy, Mercer Mayer shows that it's a talent in and of itself. The story, language, and structure are top notch, and the illustrations are wonderful.
My uncle kept this book in a box for years (it had long since fallen apart, but he couldn't find another copy, and his kids couldn't bear to part with it), and then the man I married had a hardback copy all his own, and I got to read the whole story for the first time. Even at 25, let me tell you, I was exicited.
It was my husband's favorite, and now both my kids love it.
On a side note, there is another benefit to this book: the human characters, who are all African American, look like accurate representations of real Black people. So many children's books make non-white characters look odd: either characture-like, or like Black Barbie- white features but different skin tone.
Not so with this story. Liza Lou in particular is a wonderful example of an Afrocentric standard of beauty, being very cute with natural hair and relatively dark skin.

This is one of my favorite children's books. I gave it to my daughter when she was a little girl, so I order this one for a great, great niece who is two. Her grandmother reads it to her and she loves it. Her grandmother tells me that she carries it around with her all over the house. Its a wonderful little book.

Thanks for the opportunity to share my opinion.

Pure genius, wit and courage (and a rollicking good time) describe this fantasy classic about little Liza Lou from the Bayou. She's smart as a whip and doesn't lose her head when confronted with all the nasties that reside in the Yeller Belly Swamp while she travels about trying to get her chores done for her mama. With stunning illustrations and a wry southern wit, this is a classic that crosses generations. I loved it as a young boy, and my kids love it today. Highly, highly recommended.

Down the Dirt Hole

Review Date: 2008-06-08
I met Larry Flynt once. It left an impression on me. It wasn't good. The man just seemed to have sleeze permeate out of his pores. And he seemed all spaced out, like way too many drugs had interacted with way too much debauchery, intermixing in a personality that was pretty degraded right from the get-go. What must it be like to work for such a man?

Allan MacDonell knows, and he tells all the dirt in PRISONER OF X. An inside story of the man who rose to top of the pond scum at Larry Flynt Publications, it is a story well worth reading, boys and girls. Well worth reading.

For some quirk of personality that would require years of therapy to explain, MacDonell had always wanted to work for a smut mag when he finally landed the job at Hustler. What he found was a work environment that was akin to a school of piranhas, with each fish trying its hardest to eat the flesh off of anyone higher up the ladder. And with Larry himself often enjoying the spectacle, like a Roman emperor enjoying the modern day gladiators of smut trying to take one another down. Amazingly, the dude lasted 19 years.

During that time, MacDonell met his share of pornstars, celebrities, and, of course, downright degenerates, many of whom were on the payroll. But many were more famous, and no details are spared. Even if you are familiar with the Godfather of Soul's reputation with the ladies, you wil still be really, really alarmed at what you read here. MacDonell also was there for some of the high times, like when Hustler took down Congressman Livingston, who was set to become Speaker of the House, or the offer to Jenna Bush to pose naked for a cool $10 million.

Often hilarious, often mermerizing, PRISONER OF X also often leaves you with the same feeling as you have after looking at porn. You known, all empty inside and a bit embarassed. But for some reason, you keep going back, don't you? Yeah, you know you do. And you want to check out this book, too. Don't you? Well, do it. It won't leave any permanent damage.

This is an interesting book by a writer who worked his way up the ranks at Hustler magazine for twenty years. He's brutally honest about the inner workings of the magazine including his descriptions of the pedophile Dwaine Tinsley and the sociopathic Larry Flynt, as well as about his own moral and social failings. This is good reading for anyone interested in the history of the magazine or in learning about what it was like working inside the porn magazine industry during the latter part of the Twentieth Century. As to be expected it's sexually explicit so if that bothers you, you might want to skip this one. The sexual descriptions were not gratuitous and I felt they were necessary for the honest story-telling this book provides.

Even if you haven't been let go from Hustler, you will love this book!

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wish that once in a while you had actually read some of the articles. This book is as hilarious as Hustler often was during Allan's tenure. A common misconception about this book is that it is about Larry Flynt. This book is not about Larry Flynt--it is about Allan MacDonell. If you want to learn more about Larry Flynt, you should probably visit his website. If you want to learn more about what it is REALLY like to oversee the day-to-day operations of America's most notorious stroke rag--penile scabs and all--then this is the book for you! My only complaint about Prisoner of X is that Allan has not yet recorded an audio-book version, but that's coming up next, right Mr. MacDonell?

Hey, I really did buy it for the articles!!!

Is it possible to write a book where the main character is yourself and you are the hero only because everyone else is insane, a sleazebag or just generally unpleasant? The author, MacDonell, at least, proves that you can. I kept thinking, "Boy, this guy's a jerk," at the same time I feverishly sped through his 20 year memoir of working at Hustler magazine. The stories he tells are at times shocking, sad, hilarious, occasionally boring (but these bits pass quickly), titillating and raucous (hey, kind of like Hustler magazine itself!). One can't help but feel for the guy at the same time one might not want anything to do with him.

The first half of the book is probably the toughest on his character (and interestingly he doesn't spare himself much). He was abusing drugs, women and himself, paranoid that he would be fired on a daily basis, and basically existing hand to mouth on his low wages (dating a girl at one time because she owned a VCR!). At a certain point time (after a particularly scaring DUI incident) he gets cleaned up and doesn't even drink. It's somewhat downplayed, but his success at the magazine soars at this point.

While he bashes almost everyone, (name dropping Dennis Hopper, Frank Zappa, who at times were friends of Flynt or connected to the magazine, and he cares for neither), he is particularly nasty to his fellow inmates at the asylum and of course hardest on his pyscho boss, Larry Flynt. (Once again these people probably deserve even worse criticism), but it would be nice to hear a more good tales (he admits at one point that his staff - when he rises to power - was actually a good one).

Comparison's have been made to Hunter S. Thompson, and while I think these are somewhat accurate as far as characters and subject matter, that should not indicate that the writing (and or editing) is nearly in that league. The book feels a little flabby (and repetitive near the end), and probably could have been 50 pages shorter.

Another complaint is no photos - it would be nice to know what some of these people looked like. The great cover art is by Daniel Clowes but there are no further illustrations (that would have been better than photos!)

Besides all the juicy gossip about the mag there is also some poltical stuff that is very fascinating (as they destroy one Republican senator's career, defend Clinton and try to trash Bush (Jr.). If you've ever read the magazine this book will be of interest to you. Even better on the porn industry itself is "The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral Histroy of the Porn Film Industry" by Legs McNeil (also reviewed by yours truly).

Hilarious, Crazy Book!!

Although the prose is a little self consciously rich at times, this is the most laugh out loud funny book I have read since Howard Stern's Private Parts memoir. The most inside look at not only Flynt and Hustler but the entire porn scene from the 80's and 90's. His description of porn legend Tori Welles on page 118 is uncanny-"Complexion the color of cinnamon or bourbon, brunette mane of body and bounce, flaunting the defiant cheekbones and chin of an urchin empress, the sublime Ms. Welles stepped with the self-assurance of the lifelong stone fox." (See what I mean about the prose?) When he's done describing her, you will know exactly what she looked like and what her sexual magnetism was all about even if you have never seen her. Hilarious, insightful, sarcastic. Would make a great movie.

Fun, Challenging Puzzle Book

Review Date: 2007-12-28
"Life: The Original Picture Puzzle" is the second book to come from the feature in the currently defunct Life Magazine. The book has over ninety puzzles in which readers look at two pictures of the same thing and try to find the differences between the two pictures. A few of the puzzles have six pictures of the same thing and solvers have to find the one puzzle out of the six that has been changed. There are also some new puzzles called "Cut-Ups" in which the editors took a picture, cut it into 4, 6, 9, 12, or 16 pieces and scrambled them up and solvers have to figure out how to unscramble the pieces.

For the most part, "Life: The Original Picture Puzzle" is a fun, challenging book. There are five puzzle levels: Novice, Master, Expert, Genius, and Classic (which features old pictures that once appeared in Life Magazine). The editors do a good job of sorting the puzzles into the appropriate difficulty level. Each puzzle has a suggested amount of time to solve it and a change in this book from the first is a keep score section where you can put a check mark after you've found a change. The answer section should be checked for a couple of reasons even if you find all the changes - for one thing many of the explanations of the changes are humorous. Also, ten of the puzzles have an extra bonus change and the answer section lets you know which puzzles have the additional change. However, in order to find that extra change, you need to go on Life's website to find the answer but I could not find it on the website.

While I enjoyed most of the puzzle book, I did not like the new "Cut-Up" puzzles. The puzzles with four pieces were easy enough, but the more pieces, the harder it was to solve the puzzle just by looking at it. I don't want to ruin the book by cutting up the pictures and copying the pictures isn't all that effective since the pictures are in color.

Outside of the "Cut-Up" puzzles, "Life: The Original Picture Puzzle" is well done.

I got this book for my husband for his birthday and boy did I hit the mark! My husband doesn't read for pleasure but he, no pun intended, ate this book up. He refers to it constantly and everything he has tried from the book has been wonderful. He says that it is full of the reason why a technique is used and he has learned much from it. I then bought it for my twenty-something son and he says the same thing!! It was a good investment for both my culinary tastes and to get my husband to read something!! The food is great and I don't get chenobyl chicken anymore!!! Really worth the read. Period.

I'm not much of a meat eater, but wanted to be able to cook really good meat when I grill. This book may make me a meat lover! Each recipe is very educational as they explain many of the methods they tried before determining the best method for grilling a particular item. I've tried four recipes so far and they have all been absolutely perfect. I grilled burgers for a crowd on the 4th of July and throughout the meal everyone kept commenting on how good the burgers were. Seems that burgers should be simple, but now I know how to make a perfectly cooked juicy burger! The pork tenderloin recipe was also superb; tender and juicy. I won't be looking for any other grilling or barbeque cookbook.

This is a very good book if you want to learn how to grill. I don't think that this is the best recipes book, but if you're looking to learn the techniques to grill to perfection beef, chicken, etc. this is the right guide.

the most thorough grilling book ever!

I loved this book when I was little and seeing the cover now brings back many memories. I still have this book in my collection to share with my future children and I'm sure they'll enjoy it as well.

Great illustrations and a fun story. I always loved the house full of popcorn!

brings back memories of when my mom used to read this story to my little brother and I. The mini edition is VERY small - smaller than I thought it would be. but a great gift idea to go with something.... like a popcorn machine!!!! that is why i purchased these...i did popcorn themed gift baskets. Awesome!

Glad it's back!

I loved this book as a kid and have been searching libraries and used book stores for it so my own kids could enjoy it, too. Finally it has been reprinted and it is exactly the same story and illustrations. My kids love it.

Good quality used book, required for my high school AP Psychology course. Took about 12 days to arrive, which is too long.

I love this book, I'm 16 and I have no trouble understanding it (though I am smarter than your average teen). It's quite interesting and explains a lot. It's the perfect introduction to psychology for someone like myself looking to pursue it as a career.

Simply the Best

This is the best textbook I've ever used. It is interesting and engaging. The content is excellent, but the charts, photos, quotes, cartoons, etc. make studying even more enjoyable. If you want to learn the basics of pyschology, but this book!
